Remember the Legend

Emmitt Smith signed a one year contract with Dallas today, allowing him to retire as a Cowboy. Smith is in the process of submitting his paperwork to the NFL and will be listed on the Cowboys reserve/retired list after it is processed.

Take this thread to list your favorite Emmitt Smith game or run.

I'll list two, though I could add dozens more:

1. In 1990, a 3-7 Cowboys team beat the Rams on the road to start a four game winning streak that got them -- briefly-- into the playoff race. Their offense had been terrible to that point under David Shula, whom Jimmy would can after the season and replace with Norv Turner. But in that game, the Triplets cut loose for the first time. Michael caught a long touchdown pass from Troy.

And Emmitt scored on a goal line play where I am sure he leapt into the pile, moved sideways in mid-air and made a stunned Rams linebacker miss.

2. In the 1996 NFC Championship Game against Green Bay, Emmitt broke free on a run to the right. He was hit low by a Packers defensive back and flipped upside down. He put his free hand out, pushed off and somersaulted back onto his feet, running for about five more yards. It was only a ten or fifteen yard run, but it showed how nobody was going to bring him down easily that day. It was so amazing that Fox didn't notice it; the producers assumed he had been tackled by the first hit and didn't run a replay. If John Madden had seen it, I'm sure he never would have stopped talking about it.

No doubt – its the Giants game with the broken collar bone. I don’t have the details with me so this is from memory… After Emmitt had broken his collar bone, he’s back on the field for the go-ahead drive. Commentators can’t believe he’s got anything left as his arm hangs at his side. Yet, in one critical 3rd down play, Aikman swings a pass to Emmitt for a 2-3 yd gain. We’d have to punt. But Emmitt shows the moves no one thinks he has and goes around the Giants linebacker and get the first down. I think Emmitt accounted for most of the yards in that go-ahead drive. He solidified sure-fire-hero-status right there and then.

Tedia,

He didn’t just play the winning drive with the broken shoulder. He played about the last 40 minutes of regulation AND the overtime with it. Paul Zimmerman of Sports Illustrated calls that the most courageous performance he’s ever seen, and he’s been covering pro football for at least 40 years.

Best Running Back ever. More heart, less speed………never fumbled.

Is it just me, or could we use him this year backing up Julius and acting as OB1 to our new Jedi. I mean George was on our staff last year……..

Emmit may the force be with you always.

Best there was, Best there is, Best there ever will BE!!!!!!

The YARDS prove it. And besides all the doubter that said it was the Offensive Line………..this guy had 937 yards as a senior citizen in the NFL with the Cardinals. NUFF SAID.

Barry was great…….

Payton was sweet………

Jim Brown………was Big Bad Jim……..and you don’t mess with around with Jim

But Emmit………..OH Emmit…….was the Greatest Running Back ever. Longevity. Touchdowns. Lack of fumbles. Team PLayer. The Giants game alone………..welcome to Vahalla.

The first NFL game I ever took my son to was when he was 9 years old. We went to the Vet on Halloween in the rain to watch Dallas vs. Philadelphia.

Towards the end of the game, as the rain was letting up, when the game was still 16-10 and in reach of the Eagles, Emmitt burst up the middle from about mid-field to score the final TD.

At that moment, the skies opened up and the rain just poured down, as the Eagles fans poured out of the stadium.

That game was his career-high 237 yards rushing game.

But yes, he will always be remembered for the Giants OT game. THAT was Herculean.

He ran all over the Eagles. Many many times. Washington, Giants, we dominated the NFC East and Emmit dominated those games.

I remember that game. He was the best fourth quarter running back I have ever seen.

Emmit will be known to me as Emmit the lionhearted. Maybe not as talented as others but more heart than any football player I know of. It is ridiculas to here somebody try to put Emmit on a lower tier than Brown, Barry, or Payton. As for Barry, You can have all the talent in the world but I would take a player with heart over the talented player ANYTIME. You can’t seperate the talent from the heart. One other player with incredible talent and no heart would be Ricky Williams.

A friend of mine, a Giants fan, says he Takes Emmit Smith over any running back ever. I gotta agree.

Never Fumbled……….could play all three downs………caught a bunch of balls too………was a great BLOCKER……….made up for his lack of speed with tough running and hard hitting………other than Payton I have never seen another runnner finish off his runs like Emmit Smith. He used to lower his shoulder and bring the wood. There have been some great ones, even our own Dorsett is up there. But you gotta go with Emmit. How many times did he step up when we needed it. How many times did he run roughshod all over the Giants, Eagles, Cards and Redskins. He ran in the mud, in the rain, in domes, in turf, in the heat, in the cold, there was never any excuses with Emmit. He just ran………..and run he did.

Best ever, the yards prove it. Let them speak for themselves.
