It's Prospect Day at the Ranch
The Cowboys will host 20 prospective draftees Thursday at Valley Ranch. So far, ten of the twenty players expected to visit are known. They are:
Update Add these names to the list:
Remember, the names NOT on this list are likely as important as the ones on it. No cornerbacks are here. OT Jammal Brown is not on the list. Neither are WRs Troy Williamson or Mark Clayton.
In other words, all tactics are being tried. Some of the Cowboys' targets are hiding in plain sight. Some are being kept in the dark. All the better to keep the teams around the Cowboys in the draft order guessing.

I am sorry, his agent is saying that he is going, but the Cowboys are not expecting him.

I think we need more depth at Corner. God forbid, what happens if T-New goes down or Henry then what? Back to last years musical corner game?
by chuckjjr on Apr 14, 2005 9:39 AM CDT reply actions
Agree we need more depth at corner, but I’m on the camp that we can’t continue to heavily invest in the secondary. We already have millions and high draft choices in Henry, Newman, Williams. AND we’ve no starting safety. We do need a starting caliber safety — not necessarily a superstar or a top 10 (ok top 11) pick at F safety.
I’d put our need for a stud player at the end of the D-line ahead of the need for another stud in the secondary. Personally I like David Pollack because he was effective and is projected as a quality NFL player because results in college, not his potential. Ekuban had great potential and now he’s going to his third team in three years.
I’m a little concerned with Cox’s comment regarding an OT in the first round. Maybe we’ll trade down? Alex Barron at 11? I’m not too excited about that. Khalif or Jamaal Brown at 20? I can live with that. But that means that Rodgers last year was a loss.

what is a good website to go to and see the players in this draft and their projected rds etc…?

wut we need it MATT JONES, he is the X – factor, we would bring the big spark to are offense
by Matt on Apr 14, 2005 1:25 PM CDT reply actions
hunter only played a couple of games but he looked pretty good to me. and the guy who finished out the season( i cant remember his name) was getting better every week. were not in a position to blow 1 and 2 rd picks on defensive backs. depth is important. Lack of it ruined our season last year. But we have too many starting jobs to fill and too much salary already going to cbs to get an expensive player. I think im just wearing myself out contimplating all of this, but im starting to think nevermind all this trade down stuff, use 11, 20, and 42 to get three good def prospects(de, olb, fs) and lets get going. Im just ready to start seeing the boys win again.

Yeah, matt jones is an x factor alright, not on this team. I;ll mark an X in the box where it say we wont be drafting him. He is a two to three year project, we have enough prjects on this team as it is. We need DE,LB,S,OT,RB,FB,WR and a blocking TE.This team is another year away from competing for a superbowl, too many holes yet to fill. Now, if we were a team like the eagles or the patriots who have a great team and lots of picks, then I would think of taking matt jones, but we are not there yet.We need players that can get on the field and help contribute this year.

Derrick is right.
Jones is a project…….probably for a team like the Steelers that can afford to gamble on a possible H-Back, TE, WR who knows. Guy is a combine freak, and I saw some footage of him running the option and leaving guys in the dust. However, I like the prospects of a Mike Williams vs. Matt Jones……..and Jones stock is shooting up higher than Parcells blood pressure when Vinny throws and interception. He has gone from a 3rd or 4th rounder to being projected in the first round. That is a high price for a guy that did not play WR in college.
by Jon on Apr 14, 2005 2:04 PM CDT reply actions
My top 3 guys are on that list.
11-Mike Willaims-Chances of him falling are incresing with the stocks of Spears, Merriman, Willimson rising.
20-(most likely after a trade down) Brodney Pool. The Packers signed Arturo Freeman, so they arent in the business of drafting Pool ahead of the likes of Pollack, Cody, James
42-Justin Tuck- Its been said he has the chance of ebing the best pass rusher in the draft. Also, hes a Parcells guy.
Pick acquired in trade down
Adam Terry-OT- Syracuse
What would you guys think of that?
by Randy on Apr 14, 2005 2:58 PM CDT reply actions
Randy looks like 3 quality guys to me.
I do not know much about Poole…..I been arguing for another talented big CB to play Corner/ Free Safety or Nickel…….but if Pool can cover and tackle hey sign him up. Rafael mentioned Webster he has good size and speed and could be a Corner, FS or Nickel guy.
Mike Williams could be scary in the NFL with his size and athleticism. So could Matt Jones, but I think Williams does it on day one in the NFL. Jones will be a longer range potential guy.
One thing about Notre Dame guys……..they play tough competition on TV. They are high character intelligent players. Tuck looks like an NFL prospect to me. Like Dallas, in south bend ND FOOTBALL IS KING!!!! The Shrine of that very famous Catholic University is Knute Rockne and the Football Field. Hey JJ was a second rounder and looked better than all the other RBs taken ahead of him. Wished we had stuck with our guns way back when and signed up a skinny kid named Joe Montana. Oh well……..what’s done is done.
I would not be against trading out of mabye our 20 spot for the Abraham trade or possibly a deal like last year from Buffalo……a 2nd this year and a 1st next. The draft boards and mocks are all over the place because the guys between 1-100 are hard to gauge. 3-4 Defense switches by other programs is also making the DTs even thinner as well as any DE for a 3-4 front. No telling it sure should be interesting.
Bill even wears a Tie!!!

Randy:
What ‘bout DE?? You aren’t planning to have Kenyon Coleman or Erig Ogbogu as the starters, right??
by Chandus on Apr 14, 2005 3:59 PM CDT reply actions
I say we trade up with our 11 pick to get either derrick johnson or mike williams. Then we play with our 20 pick and trade down for more options. I would be so happy if we get johnson, i see this guy like another ray lewis.

What do you guys think? Who’s your favorite rookie.

trade up hell no… we would lose later pics in the second or fourth, if anything trade down get more pics and stockpile….

If the Cowboys remain where they are, seeing them taking Pollack with the 11th, Shaun Cody with the 20th and Bullocks/Considine with the 42nd, would be a success in my eyes, Pollack could be a star as OLB and as a pass rushing DE in a 4-3, Robert Mathis (10.5 sacks) anyone?? Shaun Cody could play DE in a 4-3 and in a 3-4 and would provide inmediate depth at DT in a 4-3 scheme also. And Bullocks and Considine are looked as the best value cover safeties in the 2nd round.
If they do trade down, I see a couple of choices, the Steelers and the Chargers.
What do the Steelers need? A CB. With the 20th selection they could be in position to draft Carlos Rogers, if by some miracle Rogers gets by the Chiefs and the Saints, I guess the Steelers wouldnâ€â"¢t be too dubious about trading their 2nd rounder to move up 11 spots and taking our 5th rounder. Leaving the Cowboys with the 11th, 30th, 42nd and 62nd, and looking for Pollack at 11th, Marlin Jackson as CB/FS at 30th, trade of the 42nd and a next year conditional pick for Darren Howard and with the 62nd what ’bout Jonathan Babineaux as DT or possibly as MLB??
What do the Chargers need? They need a couple of players, an OT and a WR to take their team to the next level, considering that we’ll face them next season is a factor that makes me think twice about it, but what the hell………. With our 11th they could be in position to draft Williamson but so would they with their 12th, but that way they could see the top tackles go by the time their 28th pick comes, so, there r a couple of ways for them to go, to trade their 28th, 2nd rounder, 5th rounder and a next year pick for our 11th and take Williamson and any of the top OT with the 11 and 12, or trade their 28th for our 20th with a similar compensation as that of the Steelers, and take Williamson/OT with the 11th or OT/Clayton/White with the 20th. In the first scenario the ’Boys would be left with the 20th, 28th, 42nd and 61st, and looking for Pollack/Tuck at 20th, Marlin Jackson as CB/FS at 28th, trade of the 42nd and a next year conditional pick for Darren Howard and with the 61st Jonathan Babineaux as DT/MLB. In the 2nd scenario they would be in almost the same positions as the Pitt trade so take the same players.
Your thoughts?
by Chandus on Apr 14, 2005 4:47 PM CDT reply actions
Justin Tuck is a DE, and has been compared to Charles Haley. Hes an early second rounder because eh could be better against the run, but we are fine there with the likes of Glover, Fergie, and Ellis. We need pure speed and athleticism which is what he brings.
by Randy on Apr 14, 2005 5:28 PM CDT reply actions
D. Johnonson, M. Williams, D. Cody, S. Marriman, B. Pool, and D. Pollock would be my picks if I were the GM. Does anyone agree? Realize we have other pressing needs, but, this is a good draft for the future and in the later rounds look for a RB and QB.
I have spoken….make it so.

my choices for those that werent paying attention

Mark Clayton………20….Wr..hey guy fell to 20 and we got stuck with the next Michale Irvin…………sucks to be us
42……………Tuck………or OU Cody……..hey either way we get a DE that can rush the QB………mr. mcnabb here is your hydration…………..tuck has it for you………it is called a TUCK YOU!!!!!!

With the number of DE’s available I think the 11th pick will be traded back, but no further than 4 or 5 spots. My first 3 picks would then be Pollack, Barnes, Jones. Then I think you fill that FS spot with one of the extra picks you get from trading back. There are enough good CB’s in the draft that could play FS. Then you get someone with cover skills that will let Roy run loose and take some heads off. I think this way the first 3 picks are interchangeable with a number of players of similiar talents.

If Derrick Johnson is on the board at (11) then we would be stupid to not take him. I watched him in HS and at UT and he is a freak and will only get bigger and better. I see Mike Williams as being another Keshawn. Big but slow. Clayton (20) would be a great complement. His yards after catch will get us in the end zone which has been a foreign place to the Boys for quite some time. Bullocks (42) is great and could be perfect if he just learns to be patient and wait for the play to come to him. Lets keep it in the Big 12.
