Can Draft Dreams Come True?

Remember that hypothetical trade I proposed with the Packers? The one where the Cowboys trade down from pick 11 and land Green Bay's higher second round pick and a third? The one you can see in detail here?

The Green Bay News Chronicle reports today that the Packers are "itching" to land an impact secondary player, either one of the Pac-Man Jones/ Antrel Rolle duo or Georgia safety Thomas Davis. In order to assure itself of landing Davis, the Packers would have to leapfrog Carolina at pick fourteen. The Panthers are the highest of several teams in the second ten to work out Davis. Packers GM Ted Thompson has hinted that he's willing to move up, since he's got the extra picks to do it.

Anybody here know a team at pick 11 that's considering a move down?

That’s a really tough trade decision. Having GBs second and third round picks would be great, but dropping all the way from #11 to #24 is a tough pill to swallow. It would assure that we would get shut out of grabbing a blue chip player at the DE or OLB position, however with that extra #2, maybe we get Darren Howard. Bottom line is I’d rather trade down twice and pick up the same value than make the GB trade. Trade #11 for a second rounder and move down a few spots then Trade #20 for a third rounder and move down 6 or 7 spots. Seems like you’d hedge your bets a little better with the strategy.

Id make that deal……

That would leave us in a nice spot to pick Erasmus James at 20. Brodney Pool at 24. Darren Howard for one of our seconds and a 4th. Marcus Johnson with the other 2nd. Chris Henry in the 3rd. and Eric Shelton or best running back available with the other 3rd.

Pro vs. Cons ?

This draft is so crazy. I mean some “draft gurus” have one player, Erasmus James, going as high as 6th overall, and another anylist has James falling out of round #1. Thomas Davis is an exceptional athlete, a tremendous football player, and I have seen him too falling out of round 1 in some mocks. Also have seen him as high as 14th overall. Mike Williams I have seen at 3rd overall and getting selected by Dallas at 20.

If we do make that trade with Green Bay, I hope they get Rolle or “Pac Man”, cause I would sure like to see Davis fall to 20.

I have a question for anyone out there that is knowledgable in the difference between a 3-4 and 4-3 with respect to the size of the DEs. I’ve read many times that Greg Ellis, who is 6-6, 271, is too small to play DE in a 3-4 scheme. However, everyone is screaming for Dallas to select Shawn Merriman so he can play end in a 3-4. Merriman is only 6-4, 272, so why is it OK for him to be undersized and not Ellis? I can see playing him as an OLB, but how would he fit into a 3-4 as a DE?

by Gene on Apr 18, 2005 3:44 PM CDT reply actions

No, Merriman won’t play DE in a 3-4, he will be an OLB.

The difference is the room they have to add size, Ellis has the height, but doesn’t have the room to add more weight, so adding more weight would only make him slow footed and unable to perform. Shawne Merriman is in the same sheet, he could only play DE in a 4-3 scheme. But he’s too rough on the edges, he’s more prepared to be an OLB.

Antrel Rolle was the most dominant player in college last year. If you want an impact player……..put a star on his helmet………and thank me later.

Every other player offense and defense had some brilliance. However, if you like a guy like Sean Taylor for the Redskins…..imagine a guy that is more talented than him in our secondary. Rolle.

by Jon on Apr 18, 2005 4:28 PM CDT reply actions

Jon,

I’m not going to disagree on Rolle’s value, but I’d be very surprised if he made it too eleven. He’s too good, and I just can’t see him getting past Tennessee.

In the Packers case, they love him, but the article made it seem that the guy they hope in their fondest hopes could fall to 11 (they use the term “out of the top ten”) is Pac-Man Jones.

do it dont hesitate youll have the 20th and the 24th plus a second and possibly as third which i dont think we even have. id be all over it.go from 8 picks to 10 picks plus get 4 first day picks out of it do it if its a possibility

If I could pull that fantasy Packers deal off, I’d look:

1A. Cross my fingers and hope for Pollack, Khalif Barnes otherwise;
1B. Khalif Barnes or Cody if Barnes goes first;
2A. Terrence Murphy
2B. Sean Considine
3. Ciatrick Fason

That might be a little high for Considine, but I’ve read the Colts
love the guy, so he probably won’t last to round 3.

I think the Green Bay trade will go down.

  1. selection Clayton (Playmaker enough said!)
  2. Brodney Pool (Much needed)
  3. trade w/ saints we get Darren Howard
3rd round……..you guessed it Mike Nugent, but he probablly will fall to Minnisota in the 2nd

How would you feel if Billy traded put of the 1st round with both our 1st round picks?

Something like this.

Cleveland is Targeting Derrick Johnson.

Trade 11 and 109 (1395 points)to Cleveland for their 34, 67 and 1st next year.(1395points ) That works out perfectly.

 http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/6330687

Then we trade #20 and #148 (882 points)to Kansas City for their 2nd (#46) and 1st next year. (880 points)

*KC is looking at Carlos Rodgers, Erasmus James, Thomas Davis ect.)

That would leave us with.

3 2nd rounders, a third, 2 6ths, and a 7th. Or- #34,#43,#46,#67,#208,#209, #224 and 3 first rounders next year, where the draft is supposed to be a lot better talent than this year, and is supposivley stocked at LB. So we give AL Singelton one more year, than we get his replacment next year.

With thoose picks we can go something like….

#34-Tuck DE

  1. Bullocks FS

#46-Adam Terry or Marcus Johnson OT

#67-Johnathan Babineaux DT

#208—Walter Reyes RB

#209-Craig Bragg- WR

#224-BPA

That leaves two quesions. Would you like thoose trade dwons? and What would you do with theese picks?

i dont mind them randy but, bill is in a “win now” mindset, so i do not see it happening,

only if we had a coach that was looking to the future instead of now, cuz parcells isnt

From Fox

STOCK RISING: Drew Henson loves to travel the world in the offseason, but he has been so busy working on mechanics that he hasn’t had a chance. Henson is throwing several times a week in hopes of honing his skills and putting him in position to compete with Drew Bledsoe for the starting job in 2006. Henson hasn’t conceded the starting job this summer, but he knows the Cowboys didn’t guarantee Bledsoe $5.5 million over the first two years of a three-year deal for him to sit on the bench. Henson has impressed the coaching staff with his work ethic and grasp of the offense, and they expect him to show significant improvement in the preseason

Nothing like seeing a Vet making 5.5 million over the next 2 years to get the prodigy working out harder. Maybe Jerry meant it when he said Henson has more upside than the top qbs in the draft. One thing about Parcells. The guy with the hot hand plays. Ask Phil Simms, he can tell you.

on another subject……..

I know everybody here thinks an awful lot of Dat Nguyen and Dexter Coakley……….but perhaps the only reasons those guys even got a second look is the man that passed away today. He toiled for years on a Saints Team that had a great Defense but never won a playoff game. Went to NC where he was also Stellar. High Character on and off the field.

Sam Mills will be missed. I know I speak for many when I say our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

by Jon on Apr 18, 2005 10:57 PM CDT reply actions

Randy, I hate the idea of trading out of the first round — particularly if the pick-up includes a first rounder for next draft. The Cowboys did this last year so imagine if they do it again this year. The result is that the Dallas will have diminish the value of last year’s trade. In fact, if you take this to the extreme — why not trade out of the first round every year for another team’s second round pick and that team’s first round pick for the following draft if the “points” work out? Because it means that the Cowboys will always be passing on a first round selection to make a pick in the second round. The points are only equal on the field if both teams convert their draft choices in to players.

Dallas needs players this year. Dallas should make selections in this year’s draft. If the result of a trade is to drop a round and to acquire a selection in next year’s draft — pass. Make the pick this year and increase the likelihood that this year’s pick will be an impact player.

Well assuming Bill feels there are no impact players at #11, that trade seems like a fair deal, but dont get me wrong if Pac-man is there I would like to see Dallas muscle a little more out of the deal since the Packers think so highly of him… but than again its a good deal nonetheless.. But if theres someone there like Rolle or Johnson and we still do the deal I wouldnt be pleased… only if theres nothing in it for us by choosing at 11.. But if Merriman or Spears is there.. thats a strong maybe..
