Pick Eleven

I'm trying to set up a poll, but I'm the content guy, not the code guy, so that may take a while. In the meantime, I'd like to see everybody vote in the comments on this question: you've got the eleventh pick in your hands. Who do you take? (One fan = one vote on Cowboys Blog.)

I'll put my vote in here: Marcus Spears. I think he'll be there, and I think he gives Dallas the best flexibility for subsequent picks.

I also think he's a good player.

Jammal Brown, OT/OG, Oklahoma

by Dick on Apr 18, 2005 6:53 PM CDT reply actions

If I can get D Johnson or S Merriman, perhaps but most likely I would look for the call to trade down and get that 3rd back.

by osa420 on Apr 18, 2005 7:01 PM CDT reply actions

Shawne Merriman/DE/Maryland (*)
This guy has the size, speed, power and the ability to be a big time difference maker on defense of the draft.

I think 1986 was the last time the cowboys took an offensive linemen in the first round, so I cant see Jammal brown drafted by the cowboys in the first round, let alone the 11th overall pick.

by Derrick on Apr 18, 2005 7:03 PM CDT reply actions

DJ if he is still there. Otherwise Mike Williams or Troy Williamsom.

(Preferrably we can get one of these 3 players after tarding down a couple of spots and getting back our 3rd round pick)

Use Pick #20 to trade down with the NYJ to get Abraham (we get #26), then get Burnett, if we didn’t get DJ, or Jammal Brown, if he lasts that long. Use #42 to get Bullock

by Kevin on Apr 18, 2005 7:55 PM CDT reply actions

I want the trade with Green Bay and pick up there 58th over all and swap #11 for #24.

If I don’t have a trade partner………………….

Mike Nugent…………….:-) Just Kidding

I’d take CLAYTON…. Get the best playmaker still on the board!

I say this because I believe the Darren Howard trade will go down for our #40 over all.

by Chadd on Apr 18, 2005 7:56 PM CDT reply actions

If D. Johnson is available take him and move him to safety to replace Woodie. He is a little undersize for LB but has the intelligence, speed and he loves to punish, all great attributes to be a great safety in this league (e.g. R. Lott).

If not move up for an extra pick in round 2

by Randy on Apr 18, 2005 8:06 PM CDT reply actions

derrick johnson definitely, if hes not there, then most likely merriman since he can be both a LB and a DE, instead of just a straight DE cuz we could use the flexibility

by Ryan on Apr 18, 2005 8:29 PM CDT reply actions

He is too good of a LB, to play him at safety.
Plus, he might not want to switch, great LB’s love playing LB.

Very intriguing though….

MATT JONES IS THE MAN . jk jk DERRICK JOHNSON IS WHO WE SHOULD GET

by Matt on Apr 18, 2005 8:58 PM CDT reply actions

Got to go with Troy Williamson or Mike Williams if around, if not I believe Shawne Merriman is the man……Once again got to preach the WR theory……..My thought is to move up from 20 and get a Willamson and Merriman all in one shot….Although stocking pics sounds great but it wont get you the wins now……I will be even willing to give up the second rounder for a D. Howard while moving up from 20 spot in the first……….Those rooks are true players and you know what D. Howard can do…..

Very seldom late picks make a true impact….Yes, I am aware of those who turned out to be great players picked in the later rounds but still …….Impress upon winning now while Bill is still around…..If you dont and you wait for some of these other guys to develope and Bill is no longer around in the process you never know how long the big dance will be avail to us…….At least with true football players you know can produce and then with Bill leaving it will be like Barry Switzer taking the team over from Jimmy J…….Your playmakers are there reguardless of who take over.

by Ray on Apr 18, 2005 9:12 PM CDT reply actions

Derrick Johnson, no question.

by Kobe on Apr 18, 2005 9:17 PM CDT reply actions

I am with you Rafael. Marcus Spears, but Erasmus James is the wild card here, I simply don’t know enough about him, but he looks so fluid rushing the passer.

Antrel Rolle…………Best College Player available. Shut Down Larry Fitzgerald two years ago. Played every game. Does not take off. Had one minor off the field incident that was never brought to court. 6’ 200 and ran a 4.4 40 at Miami Pro Day was a bit slower at the combine……..but this guy comes to play……….tackles…….intercepts………bump and run………zone……..man up…….No trade down if this guy is on the board, put a Star on his Helmet and bring on Eli, Donovan, TO and Plexiglass…..or Tiki, Portis and Westbrook……..our secondary can also Tackle and get to the QB………Rolle, Williams, Newman and Henry………Although I want a WR, I think this is probably the deepest Position, a guy like Mark Clayton at 20 or some of the WRs at 42 are going to be PLAYMAKERS……….but you may not see another guy like Rolle for years. Give me Rolle one WR, and all the other picks go to DE, LB, DT.

One Vote…….Antrel Rolle

by Jon on Apr 18, 2005 10:12 PM CDT reply actions

Mark my words the 11th pick will be traded. But I don’t think we trade down to far so I still think we pick up Merriman but about four picks later.

dj if hes there. merriman if hes not. Thats if i get a player w11. I would be more inclined to trade down and get a late 1 and a 2, if not a 1, 2, and3. Whatever is availible come draft day. What if we didnt use a 1 to get a de cause we were waititng for howard and it didnt happen. We would sure be screrwed. Would we make the howard deal before hand or when the r2 pick came up? I dont know how that works.Anyway, i digress, dj if hes there, merriman if hes not.

New to the blog, but I have to give it to Jon. Antrelle Rolle is the man. I live in Miami and have seen this guy. He is exactly what we need.

by Rob on Apr 19, 2005 6:37 AM CDT reply actions

This is my first post on the blog. I hang at Cowboys-forum.com and the consensus there has been Merriman for quite awhile now. But Spears and D.Ware have really come on with a few posters there. I’m kinda surprised so many over here want DJ. A lot of Texas people on here:)?He is not well liked where i hang. My pick has been Ware since the combine was digested. Passrush is the utmost need and Ware provides the best potential for a Charles Haley type penetrater in the long run. If you guys get a chance to check out cowboys-forum.com do so. You won’t be disappointed.

by Walt G. on Apr 19, 2005 7:03 AM CDT reply actions

Mike Williams or S. Merriman or D Johnson in that order. (If available)

by chuckjjr on Apr 19, 2005 7:36 AM CDT reply actions

If there is a chance of grabbing Antrel Rolle, it should be done. He is a big, quick kid. He can cover and has speed and size…in this day and age of coverage rules in the NFL, he would make a perfect coverage safety. Make him a FS and move Roy Williams over to SS where he is most suited. Williams playing up near the line is a nightmare for opposing offenses, especially with the revamped secondary.

by WackBag_NJ on Apr 19, 2005 8:44 AM CDT reply actions

Merriman. Surest thing on the defensive side of the ball in the draft.

by David on Apr 19, 2005 10:36 AM CDT reply actions

dj if hes there otherwise id take mike williams, he should improve out poor receiving core

by rkktexas on Apr 19, 2005 10:57 AM CDT reply actions

I can’t wait for the draft – if either are there, Derrick Johnson or Mike Williams with 11

by Chris on Apr 19, 2005 11:09 AM CDT reply actions

If I had one pick and only considering the players that will most likely be available at #11 and taking into considering their other needs and what might be available with the #20 pick, I would go with Merriman.

I like Rolle and Mike Williams, but I don’t think either will be there at #11. Spears is also a great choice, but I think we can pick up another DE at either #20 or in working a trade with New Orleans to get Howard.

Merriman won’t be there at #20 and Ware might be a reach at #11. Ware is probably only a linebacker, however Merriman is a linebacker and possibly a DE at times. Merriman has also played against higher competition and he’s a little bigger than Ware.

Now if Merriman and Williams were both available at #11, I’d go with Williams. The thinking here is if Merriman is still available at #11 then that means Ware is most likely also still available and that would give me enough hope that I could grab Ware with the #20 pick.

So in a realistic scenario, my vote would be Shawn Merriman, however if you (Rafeal) think that it is realistic to think Mike Williams will be there at #11, then make him my selection.

by Gene on Apr 19, 2005 11:10 AM CDT reply actions

I want the best pressure player available. Bonus points for versatility. Merriman, Ware, Pollack, Spears, James, in that order.

Most of these players, if not all, should still be available at #11. If so, I’d do everyhting I could to dangle #11 and slide down a few spots to grab extra picks and still walk away with the player I wanted.

by Paul on Apr 19, 2005 12:35 PM CDT reply actions

i would say williams or williamson if they are there or merriman, on www.ranchreport.com bill parcells contacted maurice claurett’s agent i guess bill likes him ALOT and will take him in the fourth or later if hes there

by mike on Apr 19, 2005 1:07 PM CDT reply actions

If Antrel Rolle or PM Jones falls to 11 then definitly one of them. I find that unlikely however. If they are sure they want the 3-4, then they should draft Merriman, and then draft a sleeper MLB late in the draft like Rian Wallace to pair up with Dat Nguyen and make Al Singleton a back-up. If they stay in the 4-3 then they should try and trade down because there won’t be anybody really necessary at the 11th pick. If they can’t trade down then they should pick Troy Williamson, and get another LB in the 2nd round like Darrl Blackstock. Either way, they should still pick David Pollack or Eramus James with # 20.

by Zach on Apr 19, 2005 1:40 PM CDT reply actions

I think the board should look like this at 11:
1. Mike Williams
2. Derrick Johnson
3. Shawne Merriman
4. Antrell Rolle
5. Marcus Spears
6. Troy Williamson

And with the 11th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys SELECT: FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS LINEBACKER DERRICK JOHNSON

by Adrian on Apr 19, 2005 2:13 PM CDT reply actions

I would take Thomas Davis at #11.
He would replace D.coakley when the cowboys play the 4-3
and in the 3-4 would switch to strong safety, imagine blitzing T.Davis and R.williams
T.Davis is 6’1",230 and ran a 4.6.
But most important he is a playmaker could be the next
derrick brooks. Then at #20 take the best DE D.pollack another playmaker

by Mark on Apr 19, 2005 2:25 PM CDT reply actions

I’m going to be a little odd and say that if you stay at 11, take Pacman Jones or Antrel Rolle if one of them falls to you. I think they’re the one “value” that could drop out of the top 10 and really work for us (as opposed to DJ, who Rafael has convinced me is not a good fit). I am also still very intrigued by Erasmus James — if he’s healthy, he’s the potential Warren Sapp. But my guess is that we will trade down. gg

by GG on Apr 19, 2005 3:48 PM CDT reply actions

Pollack, has the most upside, in my opinion, in the most probably available players at the 11th spot, Merriman, Ware, Thomas Davis, Jammal Brown, you name…… I like Ware also, but in the Sun Belt you don’t find the top level of competition, which makes me think that the could develop but it’s going to take him more time. while Pollack has faced the SEC level of competition.

MERRIMAN if no trade happens at 11

by John H. on Apr 19, 2005 4:54 PM CDT reply actions

Guys Jerry Jones is good for making trades and coming up short. I think we should play with pick # 20 and not 11. Only way I would trade down is one or two spots. And it would have to bring a multitude of picks.

LB Johnson
DE/OLB Merriman make him a middle linebacker (Make Parcell happy)
Erasmus James

In this order

keep 11 trade 20 for another 1st and a 3rd. call philly an no i don’t want freddy mitchell i think his antics are funny but his production sucks. i was stuck on spears for a minute but reading more I could see parcells liking cody more than spears because of his burst and motor unfortunately marcus has had the rep of taking plays off that’s probably more boredom than laziness. I’ve seen cody play and he brings it. I still like spears more but i can see them taking cody. you could trade 11 and 20 and either stock pile this year or get an extra 1st next year.
this is what i want
1a. de spears
1b. ol barnes(i’m biased i live in seattle, sue me)
2a. lb burnett
2b. fs bullock
5. cb/st perkins
6. wr/stbradley
6. rb jacobs
7. og lightbody
i think they can pull this off with a trade of 20
can we get a first next year and a third this year for 11?
