Help Wanted

I'm going to be away from the blog for about a week or so, and want to keep the discussions moving. Since a solid community has formed in the mere two and a half months that Cowboys Blog has been around, I'd like to solicit some ideas and guest posters from the group.

If you've ever wanted to take the controls of the blog from me and post your own stuff, this is your chance. Respond in the thread and I'll contact you. I'm hoping for find five or six guest bloggers to share the labor.

Usage update: We're young, but we're growing. Last Tuesday, Cowboys Blog received it's 50,000th visit. At some point the next day, it took its 500,000th hit. Thanks to everyone for stopping by. More importantly, thanks to everyone for coming back. Spread the word. 2005 is going to be a good year.

I have some stuff. It may not rise to the level of your insight, of course, but I would n’t mind chipping in a piece or two. I think I can stir the pot a bit. Maybe.

Rafael,

I’d love to try and help you out (this week or anytime). I’ve become an avid reader (and more recently, I’ve made a few posts as well) of your blog in the past month. I’d be glad to write articles or provide commentary, or anything else you need. I love the ‘Boys, and I love writing articles about them (a little weird, I know), even though most of them aren’t read by anyone but myself.

P.S. My mom (who has been a Cowboys fan all her life—she attended every single home game from the first ever, until she went off to college) has just started reading your blog, and she thinks you are doing a great job.

A suggestion for those of you who want to help out – may sure you fill in your email address when you post – that way Rafael and I can email you offline and not have to post something to the blog.

Thanks for your help.

If you do not want to post your email publicly here, you can email me at raul@theboys.com and I will forward it to Rafael.

by Raul Villaronga on May 9, 2005 5:53 PM CDT reply actions

Actually, it’s not necessary to post your web address on the thread. I can go into the moderation link and find someone’s address if I need it.

I would also be honored to try and help out. I’ve loved the Boys since before they were the steelers redheaded stepchildren in the 70’s , and since before i seemed to be the only cowboys fan in Woodbridge, N.J. in the 80’s.
I try to keep up with every tidbit of news that comes out,and when Tuna said the 3-4 was comin’ around, I rolled up my sleeves to catch up (even my kids had to learn it! ) .
It must be the Boys time again to try and make it to the big podium with the chrome trophy soon, cause Ive been seeing a lot of bandwagons pulling up, & the local football jersey store is carrying 7 or 8 jerseys this year ,instead of the usual 1 or 2 .
Well , til the Boys move to Alabama, but still call themselves the Dallas Cowboys , make mine a tall glass of Blog .

You creating this Blog is an excellent idea. The networking and fan base you have created is awsome. You give fans such as me the opportunity to indulge in during our free time. I know how important this blog is and it would be an honor to assist you in any way I can while you are away. Your topics and commentarys are always top notch. I look forward to reading your insights and having general discussions with all my fellow bloggers. If I am chosen to help you with the blog, I will try to be as creative and insightful as you.

I could try to exercise everyone’s brain by giving them the chance to discuss how exactly Parcells will figure out his 45 man game-day roster. With all the talk about rotation on the DL, keeping 9 guys there will cause shortages elswhere.

I can neither write well nor do I have extensive football insight (I wanted to trade a first round pick for one next year to try for lienhart, hmm…(I’m quite pleased with the way it turned out)). So how about I just read. Thanks for everyone’s input to the site.

Rafael,

This is the best place for Cowboy fans to discuss our team. I am new to the blog, but would be more than happy to help out with some posts here and there. There is a tremendous amount of knowledge out there taking part in this blog. Keep up the great work that you are doing!

Ooh, pick me, pick me.

Besides the obvious posts soliciting opinions as to who would look better in the Cowboy Cheerleader outfits, Salma or Penelope, Oiler Troll also plans a sort of campy “olympics” pitting the Derrick Dolls (if there are any women around who would still claim to have ever been a Derrick Doll – my guess is that they are all smoking cigarettes) vs The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders of any era…with running commentary by AO Bum Phillips and the Ghost of Tom Landry. Bloggers from thiss site may submit suggestions for events.

Oiler Troll would also make every effort to get Dandy Don Meredith to attend and be the field reporter – it is Oiler Troll’s understanding that Don is a big fan of both the egg toss, the potato(e) sack race and Cosell-baiting.

Relax, Rafael – the place will be in good hands under Oiler Troll.

(And not for anything, but boy, doesn’t the Houston Texans / Dallas Cowboys cross-state smack-talking rivalry lack a little verve?)

If you need a hand be glad to help out.
Just a quick idea what about a contest to pick the final roster for opening day including the practice squad?

If you can talk Catch-22 to fill in, by all means he is the best poster on several forums that I have been following for years. Chances are you know who I’m talking about.

http://www.cowboys-forum.com/index.php

And by the way, this blog has become my first stop, even before the official Cowboys website for information. I’m not sure why you are so good, but you are.

Find Catch and join forces. Together you will rule the universe!

Ha ha ha…

Sure I have experience running a website as an admin so I’d more then happy to take over the Blog and help you any way I can

by Mike on May 10, 2005 9:32 AM CDT reply actions

Rafael,

In a recent blog a few of us had brought out some points about the Cowboys receiving the short end of the stick, and getting an unfair shake with the rest of the league. I have one topic, and here is part of the story:

It sure seems that the NFL Hall of Fame’s inductees are a bit jealous when it comes to ex-NFLers that played for “America’s Team”. Michael Irvin’s stats compare well with Charlie Joiner. Joiner, a hall of famer, had 750 receptions, 12,146 yards, and 65 TDs in 239 carreer games. While Irvin had the same 750 receptions, 11,904 yds, and ironically the same 65 TDs respectfully, but did his work in only 159 carreer games. That’s 80 games less than Joiner! FIVE FULL SEASON’S WORTH!! In 95 the “Playmaker” had an outstanding year with 111rec, 1,603 yds, and 10 TDs, and an NFL record 11 games with a 100 yards! His stats far exceed already Hall of Famer Lynn Swan!! …… Why is Irvin left out of the Hall?

by Eric on May 10, 2005 11:41 AM CDT reply actions

… antway, I’d be happy to help. Just thought the Irvin snub was a good topic for the off season.

by Eric on May 10, 2005 11:42 AM CDT reply actions

Great blog, Rafael! I own a fantasy football website(fantasyfootballexperience.com) and am searching for a Dallas Cowboys correspondent, so If you or any of your visitors would be interested in covering the ’Boys this season, get in contact with me for more details.

I haven’t been a regular to post, but have contributed to your previous incantation of The Boys.com. My previous rants include “Letter to all the Naysayers” and “What, me worry?”

While it’s been a while since I’ve published, I’d love to take another shot at infamy.

I also second the motion for Catch-22. Haven’t chatted with him for quite some time.

Ron Mexico,

The reply is in your box. Look for it.

by Rafael Vela on May 10, 2005 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

If we want to get started with the Cowboy “snubbage” from the HOF, I could go on forever. Besides Irvin, who still has a pretty good chance, there are quite a few more ‘Boys that should be in the Hall. First, if we want to stay with WR’s, Bob Hayes should be in. Even if it’s nothing more than a mention of his being the only person ever to win an Olypmic Gold Medal and a Superbowl ring, that is a feat that will never again be matched. But as a reciever, he was amazing; changing the game and the way defense was played should far outweigh is off-the-field issues (Come on! Hayes’ issues were petty compared to the actions of one Lawrence Taylor). He has some of the best recieving numbers in the history of the game:

TD% (how many of his receptions were for TDs)
HAYES: 19.14%
Jerry Rice: 12.72%

Y/R
HAYES: 20.3
Rice: 14.8

It goes on (you can look up numbers for other HOF recievers, I already have, so I know Hayes ranks better than just about all of them) but I’m too lazy to look up the other information now.

———-And since I’ve gotsta get to studying, I can’t add any other players right now, but I’d be glad to (It could be my way of helping out, even though I’d be preaching to the choir).

by David-CT on May 10, 2005 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

Yep, Rafael, I’d love to help you out. Anything that doesn’t require me to be in Dallas (Connecticut isn’t that far….) is something I’d be more than willing to do.

Speaking to the point Eric makes about Charlie Joiner vs. Michael Irvin (see post above), I think Oiler Troll can take this one:

Absolutely not to take anything away from Michael Irvin (except his courtroom fashion sense) as Irvin was not only a great receiver, but a gamer, a true pro and a guy you simply wanted to have on your team. There is reason. however, to cut Charlie Joiner some slack – he was drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1969 out of Grambling (for crimes he did NOT commit), and he was not freed of that burden until the 1972 season (in the middle of the first of two consecutive 1-13 seasons). The team he was sent to? The Bengals (typical numb-nut move by Bud Adams, lest “Pastorini-to-Joiner” have entered the football lexicon of revered QB/WR combos). So, unlike Irvin, Joiner had to contend with some lean QB years.

I mention Joiner’s being drafted by the Oilers in a tongue-in-cheek manner, but if you think about it, that team had no offense in those years (had they been a European soccer team they probably would have been demoted to semi-pro ball), and only in Pastorini’s rookie year did Joiner regulalry see the ball, usually in the form of a desperate bomb heave. Joiner was lucky to have survived healthy (I think he broke a limb in his time with Houston) and for him to go on to be the most productive WR in the NFL (as of 1996 when he was inducted with the 750 catches you mentioned) speaks well of him.

But c’mon – full length fur in Dallas, in court, in the summer? What’s up with that?

That’s what Oiler Troll has to say.

by Oiler Troll on May 10, 2005 9:03 PM CDT reply actions

Also, on Bob Hayes. If you track down a copy of the 1979 Thanksgiving game, they have a pre-game piece on Bob Hayes.

RAfael,

I’m from Canada where no one talks Dallas, this site is like heaven for me who is absolutely in love with the Cowboys. Keep up the good work.

by Matt on May 11, 2005 12:45 PM CDT reply actions

I agree with Matt! (except for the being from Canada part—love Canada though, went canoeing in the Quetico a couple summers ago—amazing!!)
Living in Connnecticut, where everyone is either a Jets, Patriots (rub it in my face all of the time), or Giants(heh, I have made quite a few enemies during football season) fan. Nobody talks or cares about the ‘Boys around where I live. It’s tough—but this site has kept me going. I get back to Dallas every now and then becase my grandmother lives there, but I can converse with fellow Cowboys fans here anytime. Amazing—thanks quite a bit.

Hey, I’m brand new to this blog, but I’m already blown away! I have several sites and forums that I check for Cowboys info, and this is the only place I’ve found that has most everything in one place. I’d love to help in any way if you need it, and if not I’ll settle for reply-ing my two cents.

Thanks for the site.
