Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Sign of the Times

They couldn't be looking over their shoulders at folks like us, could they? The Dallas Morning News announced with some fanfare that all its sportwriters are going blogging. It's actually a big debate in newsrooms, with some newspaper staffs embracing blogging and others being hostile towards us pesky outsiders. In the sports world, however, you have to wonder why anybody would oppose it?

I definitely agree that blogging is the wave of the future. It was how a lot of people knew about the Tsunami in December, before the news media got the word out.

You can’t deny that sites like this are a great way for not only writers to get the word out quicker, but for us fans as well, because we now have a way to keep up to date on our team. It also allows us the opportunity to discuss and debate with a bunch of our fellow fans from across the nation.

Sites like this one are only going to get bigger and bigger, and the news media who are not keen on catching the wave, are going to be swept away! No pun intended.

However blogging is free and uneditted and unbranded and generally, not accountable for misinformation. So sites like this are great as long as they are not too big (imagine – if there were 100,000 unique visitors to this site it would no longer be a small, committed community — it would be a mess).

IMHO, blogging is good as long as its small and its shared by committed participants. Otherwise, they blog is just another website and the interactivity isn’t of much value.

I agree. I only started doing this a few weeks ago, but I really enjoy the conversations with Cowboy fans who are as into the team as I am. It’s also nice to get other people’s opinion on things. I’ve actually been convinced on one topic that maybe, just maybe, guys who saw things differently from me were right. If you show me a better way to accomplish a goal, I’m not to proud to go with it, so I appreciate hearing what other Dallas fans have to say.

i love this site. when i go to the nfl.com rumor mill to chat. there are more people cussing out people than actual talking about football. besides i had rather talk to nothing but cowboy fans. at least i am on the same wave.

As long as newspapers and cable sports networks continue to hire sport writers/commentators/columnists based on factors other than their knowledge
of the sport they cover, the true fans will seek out other sources for their
information…as many have already done on this blog and others.
As for not being accountable for mis information neither are newspapers
or networks …..

To paraphrase the good John Stewart:

Ah yes – Mainstream Media – giving a voice to the already voiced.

Somehow, unless the DMN really goes after it, they are setting themselves up for ridicule.
