The Silly Season -- DMN Edition
The Morning News' Rick Gosselin adds his two cents to the preseason ranking business, rating Dallas 20th in his initial pre-season listing. Gosselin puts Dallas in select company, just one spot behind the Denver Broncos, whom the Street and Smith folks have winning their division. The biggest surprise on Gosselin's list is Oakland, who leapfrogs from 28th on his last'04 list to the 14th spot now. Given Oakland's lackluster draft, Gosselin is giving incredible value to Randy Moss and Lamont Jordan.
There is one common refrain to the two lists critiqued so far; Gosselin, like the Street and Smith analysts, is disturbed by the Cowboys' age, especially on offense.

That is why FOOTBALL is decided on the field and not in the press.
Sort of like elections……….and just about every other thing known to man.

Agreed, but every team is going to go on a month long vacation starting next week. We’ve got to talk about something.
by Rafael Vela on Jun 4, 2005 11:07 PM CDT reply actions
I agree predictions are useless, we know what potential this team has, however, we might suffer a serious injury, or the team might not gel. Lets wait until atleast late September before picking who will win the SB. The Cowboys if they do start off well will be a serious contender because with W’s come confidence and with confidence comes elvated play. If we start sweeping Cal and NYG the rookies will be hype and be playing better than they are because they know they can win.

You’re allright, Rafael, you’re keeping guys interested, for that we thank you.
by Chandus on Jun 4, 2005 11:15 PM CDT reply actions
I would be careful when talking about Californa sweeps, matt, what I know is that San Diego was a playoffs team last year and returns with all the players and this year rookies, and Oakland has the player that played in Minnesota and gave us plenty of headaches, so talking about sweeps is risky business.
by Chandus on Jun 4, 2005 11:20 PM CDT reply actions
Sean Taylor was charged with aggravated assault. Better than Roy Williams?? The media hyped this guy up so much and said he would be alot better then Roy. I want to hear them now if he is convicted and for some reason can’t play.

Guys! Take a good look at the Dallas Cowboys offense and defense and the best they can do is 20th. Look what we had last year and finished 6-10. I just don’t see BP letting these guys sell themselves short.
Jon you are so right…I too am glad the glad is played on the field and not in the press.
Oh yeah, providing we have the pass rushers I think we have, good luck to the QB trying to get the ball to Moss.
Has anyone heard any new about Merimann from San Diego or whatever his name is. I was just curious

Dallas has made great strides this offseason. With the fre agents and draft picks we are immediately better, but our rookies will take time to learn at NFL speed.Look for us really come together midseason and be a beast next year.Anyway you look at it this infusion of talent heads us in the right direction!

id rather have age and experience on offense and a young pesky defense.

Is there anybody reading this who still has S&S’s 04 annual around? I’d be curious to see what number they assigned Dallas last season. My guess is that it’s higher than this year’s; since they seem to base everything on last season’s outcomes, I’m guessing the team coming off 10-6 gets a lot more love than the one coming off of 6-10.
by Rafael Vela on Jun 5, 2005 12:07 AM CDT reply actions
lou i agree about all the sean taylor hype i was sick of hearing how much better he was than roy. roy is a two time pro bowler who could of gone his rookie year and has never mentioned his contract, sean on the other hand didnt even start the whole season and after one year, which involved drunk driving charges, he wants a new contract. As with the ware over merriman pick it goes to show the cowboys value character very high.

Aside from his draft analysis, Gosselin is a retard. We may not set the world on fire, but we won’t be at the bottom with the Denver’s and Sean Taylor’s of the NFL (F**king Foreskins, and they have the gall to accuse US of being thugs). Keep stirring the pot Rafael, as you said we are now in “Buck Pasture”. Keep watchin’ the clock on the front page gentlemen.

i thought it was funny to see taylor face on espn, but they where saying that he was wanted by the police. i don’t ever remember seeing roy williams getting in any kind of trouble. and people where saying the taylor was going to be better than williams. that is also the same kind on people that says that dallas is going to finish third in the division behind gaints.
DON’T THINK SO DINGLE-BERRIES.
by Darrell M on Jun 5, 2005 10:56 AM CDT reply actions
Love AndyZ’s comment. I agree with it completely. I’m hoping to see this D pull itself together by midseason and start developing into a monster unit for next season.
Plus, I expect Parcells to turn his attention to the scoring side of the ball in next year’s draft. Look for us to get younger and faster on offense. The WR class is supposed to be really good next year, and I expect Parcells to take advantage of that. Also, Henson or Romo had better step up this year, or we could see a QB in next year’s draft as well.
by Rob2 on Jun 5, 2005 10:59 AM CDT reply actions
granted – age on offense won’t be our strength. but c’mon… the Cowboys had a great off-season — specially on the D side where games are won. We were the #1 ranked Defense 2 seasons ago with largely the same players as we had last year. There is a lot of talent there and we’ve now 2 new solid corners and a suitable FS to allow Roy to play more SS and a host of D-linemen to play either 3 -4 or 4 -3.
My top fear, though, is how mediocre the 3-4 might may us if Glover and Ellis are on the sideline too much and Ware doesn’t dominate early in the season and Burnett proves to be too small and Shanle is on the field too much. (why did we draft Burnett anyway? He’s not a 3-4 LB and we needed a 3rd rd pick — I was expecting us to trade down for two 3s or a 2 and 3 or to even trade for a 1st next year with our early 2nd pick… oh well)
back to forecasting…. With an average offense (which shouldn’t make too many mistakes due to our experience) and a strong D that should be able to pressure the passer and stop the run (glover, ferguson, carson in the middle and bulky DEs and LBs — Ware) we are better than 20th. I say we’re at least in the low teens…

I think ESPN’s opinion of us is a good one, around 4th in the NFC. A HUGE plus we have this year over last year is Depth. Not only on Defense with our new defensive line rotation, but our core of running backs as well. Our offense last year was one dimensional when Julius went down. Now we have a more improved O line AND a better core of running backs with fresh legs. If our running game can stay productive through out the season I see a wildcard in the future.

I had to re-post this….
QB-Same, Just younger
RB- WAy improved- HEalthy JJ, OROY in A-Train, M.Barber III, 2nd round talent.
TE-Improved- Witten still improving, and we get one of the best blocking TEâ€â"¢s in the league back form injury, in Cambell
WR-improved- Morgan should be more knowledgable of the offense and healthier, crayton and Copper lloked good last year, and Key and Glenn are bck form injury.
OT-Same(same players, Floz and Vollers)
OG- improved- more in shape LA, and Rivera. WE have 2 of the best 5 guard in the lague
C-same, Johnson is as solid as solid gets.
D-Line- Improved, we have depth, we will have our studs fresh all game and all year.
LB-same- Dats solid, we have young studs in BRadie and Demarcus, Simgelton is a good pro, although nothing spectacular.
CB-Improved, we have a formoer pro-bowler as our 3rd corner, Henry is a young pro-bowl type talent, and Newman really came on at the end of last year
S- Same, Roy, will we at his natural position, we habve several optoins at FS. And if worse comes to worse we resort back to Lynn, which means, weâ€â"¢re the same as last year.
K/P-same

Carioca,
I think that Burnette was brought in because 1. He is a natural born leader, he captained his team for 2 years. 2.Extremely athletic and a solid tackler if he can overcome injuries. 3. Seems to be a good fit as an inside LB, he will play OLB this year, but next year we draft a beast to play LOLB and move Burnette inside beside Dat.
by matt on Jun 5, 2005 11:56 AM CDT reply actions
are defense will be better just by having the depth at cb, and d-line. our offense is better just by having jj full time, and glenn if he stays healthy, campbell at te. i dont get what people are thinking, i guess like rafeal said they must just go by where you finished the season before.

by mark on Jun 5, 2005 3:41 PM CDT reply actions
I think the age thing is way off base in this case. A lot of it is based on the position. I think that different positions feature different skill and reach their peak at different age ranges.
For example, offensive line doesn’t require speed as much as strength and knowledge—technique and knowing what to do. Generally, a man is at his peak strength in his late 20’s early 30’s. An offensive lineman can play well into his mid-thirties depending on how well he takes care of himself. Age isn’t going to hurt LA, Rivera, or Zell if they show up in shape and the word is that LA is in his best shape in years. Matter or fact, it will probably make them more effective.
Same thing with defensive line. Bob Lily, Randy White, Charles Haley were absolutely at their best in their early 30’s, or at least they sure didn’t lose anything.
Linebacking and safety are kind of a push. A player may lose a step, but he isn’t out “chasing Cars” as BP would call it. I think Woodson had his best years toward the end of his career when he knew exactly what to do and was a cohesive factor for the rest of the DB. Roy and Davis will probably be better five years from now, but age is sure not a problem at the present time. We have a lot of young backers, so that’s not a problem there either.
Quarterback? Man look at history. Quarterbacks normally peak after they have had a few years to mature. Okay, Brady is the exception and is worries me that he could just get better. For instance, 17 out of 34 winning Super Bowl quarterbacks were 31 or older at the time they won their championships.
John Elway won Super Bowls at 37 and 38. Staubach was 35 when he won his second Super Bowl. Jim Kelly went to three Super Bowls yards after turning 31.
Joe Montana won his last two Super Bowls at 33 and 34. Bart Starr was 34 when he won Super Bowls I and II. Iâ€â"¢m not even going to mention Y.A Title because probably very few people reading this remembers who he was, but he was a warrior well into his late thirties. George Blanda played until he was almost fifty. I remember they asked him if he was going to coach when he retired and he said noâ€â€he was too old:) Nobody wants a fifty-year old rookie coach.
Running backs, wide receivers and cornerbacks peak early because of the emphasis on speed and reflexes. Running back is no problem. JJ and Barber are kids and A-Train is in, what, his forth or fifth year? Eddie George was way over the top and proves the point. All of the cornerbacks except Glenn are on the sunny side of 25 and Glenn is apparently an exceptional athlete and can still run with the kids ala Darrell Green. We may be in a bit of a sticky situation with WR, But then maybe not. Speed was never Keyâ€â"¢s strong suit-big body and just â€Å"Catch the Damn Ballâ€Â. Terry Glenn can still fly and Quincy is supposedly in terrific shape. All the rest of the guys are pretty young and maybe will improve this year. Maybe be okay here.
In any event, I think anyone like Rick Goosehead that make a blanket statement that the Cowboys are too old is just working his mouth and not his brain. You need to analyze where the age is and how it fits into the big picture, and I think the Cowboys are going to have a tremendous year.
by Bonzer on Jun 5, 2005 3:52 PM CDT reply actions

Just some info………Jean-Jaques Taylor reporting for the Sporting News reports the Cowboys would like to expand JJ recieving role, by increasing his yards per catch from 6.4 to 8.5. They plan to increase his role on screens and wheel routes to enable him to do just that…………..
by AndyZ on Jun 5, 2005 10:06 PM CDT reply actions
The Madden ratings for teams are never really that good anyway. The Titans have a better offense than us? Naw dont think so. Both our D and Offense are underrated. Next year we should get some respect, but I doubt it.
by Lou on Jun 5, 2005 11:50 PM CDT reply actions
Tell Rick Gosslein that the Cowboys won’t need to be as good on offense as they were last year. Their defense will be so dominate that it will take a lot of pressure off the offense. Here are several reasons why our offense will be better than it was last year:
—Having J. Jones for more than 8 games
—Having someone other than lead foot Eddie George as a backup RB
—Having Terry Glenn for the whole season (hopefully)
—Having Dan Campbell blocking for the whole season
—Improvement across the board on the offensive line
There’s no doubt that injuries will occur and I’d be the first to admit that we could use another young WR, but when a hurt Quincy Morgan is your #2 WR and and old Eddie George was your starting RB for half the season, you know things can only get better.

Dallas has some old guys, but jj, witten, comeon man! o linemen can go strong into their late 30s. our offense is fine, and our defense is much improved, that means well do better. Everyone is saying “theyll do better than last year” kind of as an afterthought, that is so they can cover their bases when its time to get back on the cowboys bandwagon next season. No one is going to make any predictions that arent the same old new england, philly stuff until those guys lose. Then all these chickens@#ts will say “I knew it. I said theyd be better than last year. You heard it here first.” By the way, If parcells was thinking shortterm, and big d had no direction, we would have gotten a wr with our pick 20 and wouldnt be switching to a 3/4. He is slowly building a VERY GOOD team, and bringing in fa’s to help now. People are so stupid! I cant wait to see all these reporters change their tune around October when the boys are kicking ass all over the place.

I don’t play any Maddens but isn’t there a “curse” associated with the player/team appearing on the cover? And isnâ€â"¢t McNabb on the cover of the new Madden?
by StarStruck on Jun 6, 2005 5:24 PM CDT reply actions
the curse was supposedly broken last year……….but both Vick, Culpepper were hit by the curse. I think Ray Ray broke it last year………..but who knows maybe he already had his curse……..at a Super Bowl a few years back.
OOOPS……….this just in………..this just in………..given that it is unlikely Sean Taylor will even play football next year he has been chosen for the cover of Madden 05. Way to go Redskins……you finally got a man on the cover. No word on whether or not he will be in Stripes……..or DOC Orange…….or a Suit and Tie for the Trial.
by Jon on Jun 6, 2005 6:19 PM CDT reply actions
Ray Ray had a “down” year by Ray Ray standards didn’t he? Could it be the Madden curse merely runs concurrently with Ray Ray’s clubbing curse? Or maybe, Ray Ray is so talented that it takes two years to show up. Hey, the Red Sox even went to the World Series while living under their curse! :)
by StarStruck on Jun 6, 2005 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

by Jon on Jun 6, 2005 6:50 PM CDT reply actions
if there really is a madden curse then i truly , truly hope that when philly playes dallas mcbarf gets caught in a spears and ware sammich and is knocked out of the rest of the season.and in the same game TO learns there really is a ESPN curse and meets mr williams for another broken leg and if that doesnt happen i can always fall back on some voodoo dolls…lol
by jess on Jun 6, 2005 7:03 PM CDT reply actions
i dont wish anyone harm………in fact I would rather SWEEP the eagles with all their little birds on the field. That way the Philly faithful have nothing to complain about.
One thing that both Bill Parcells, Joe Gibbs, Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and even Andy Reid understand…….beat the teams in your division and you go to the playoffs.
Lets go Boys………Beat NYG, Philly, and yeah once more the Deadskins.
by Jon on Jun 6, 2005 10:39 PM CDT reply actions
Who’s Goosebumps calling old? I agree with Bonzer’s take. The O-Line gets better with age(Jackie Slater,) and many QBs play well in their mid 30s, like Gannon, DeBerg, Staubach, etc.
OK, so our starting WRs are getting up there in age, but it was injuries, not age that hurt us last year. Overall, we got better at all positions, not older.
We’ll do well this season, and will seriously kick butt next year!
by onepaniolo on Jun 7, 2005 12:17 AM CDT reply actions
I agree with Jon. I don’t want to see anyone hurt this year. I do, however, want to see McNabb getting up off the ground a lot. Beating ALL of the Eagles would make me really happy this year, and seeing McNabb on his @ss a lot will help make that happen. I don’t ever want to see the commentators counting how long he ran away from our defenders again. Drop back, … and get up. That’s the way I want to see it. Same for the Skins, Giants, Chargers……
