Double Ouch!
Rookie DE Marcus Spears left practice today on a cart after a teammate rolled over his right leg in a running drill. MRIs were ordered for Spears' ankle, knee and groin to determine the severity of his injuries.

Is there an update on how long he will be out. And should this open the door for Canty to start.
by Matt on Aug 5, 2005 3:06 PM CDT reply actions
this isnt good. for a team switching over to the 3-4 losing a lineman like spears is going to severly hurt us. Ecspecially if its for the entire season like some are speculating. Hopefully it isn’t nearly that serious but in any event this is a bad day for the cowboys.
by nate on Aug 5, 2005 3:06 PM CDT reply actions
At the bottom of the mid-day report on Dallascowboys.com said he was gone for the season on the Who’s not hot section. Seems to leap to that conclusion based on info earlier in the same report.
by Sean on Aug 5, 2005 3:11 PM CDT reply actions
I think they are jumping to conclusions because no one has published anything on the severity of the injury. Even still, they can move Canty over and not miss much because he is expected to be that great. If Spears misses that much time, then that just gives Canty even more time to catch up and show his potential.

Perhaps we won’t see a complete shift to the 3-4 this year (or even less than they planned to). Spears was critical to the transformation. Here’s to keeping our fingers crossed that he won’t be out too long. BTW: THIS ROYALLY SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Pete Hunter was running on the sideline trying to get loose after he blew up his knee last year so walking off with help doesn’t really mean much.

Listen guys chill out, quite a few players already have had to have MRI’s to look at injuries already including plax burress who is back already. Could just be a bad strain, twist, hopefully nothing is torn and he’ll be back in time for the chargers.
he was walking on it tenderly when leaving the field in the footage I saw on dallascowboys.com midday update.
also, Kenyon Coleman is working with the first team Marcus was behind him. At this point all this changes is that Jay Ratliff moves into his spot behind Coleman for now. this is probably good for Ratliff as well as Canty to get more reps.
get back soon Marcus!!!

Although, spears would be a big loss, we do have some players that can step in and contribute(Canty, Coleman,Ratliff), but a bigger loss for this teams defense would be Ferguson, as we have no long tern viable backup nose tackle. Thats a priority in next years draft for sure.
by Derrick on Aug 5, 2005 3:59 PM CDT reply actions
Thanks for bringing some reason into this Danimal. All we know is that he’s injured and that’s about it. I’ve not read anywhere that he’s out for a week, a month, a season. Though I assume, by now, more info is known but not yet published. We’ll just have to wait for info to trickle our way.
I’ll be intraining camp tomorrow and hope to be receiving the good news about Spears in person. Hope the supposed scrimmage goes well.

why are some of you saying at least it gives the rest of the guys a chance?" they were all going to be getting cahnces anyway- canty, ratliff, coleman, brooks, etc- the key this season was ROTATION and spears meant a lot to it. but like someothers have said, it could just be a sprain and nothing more, god willing, so we’ll just have to let it all play out.
im glad to see that frazier is back in full stride and playing better as a sophomore here. he looks to definitely be the 4th corner-i hope

YAT obviously hasnt a clue. latest info i can find anywhere is from sportingnews.com via the a.p. as follows:
Associated Press
OXNARD, Calif. — Marcus Spears, one of the two first-round draft picks considered potential defensive starters as rookies for the Dallas Cowboys, left practice Friday with an apparent knee injury.
Owner Jerry Jones said there could be other problems.
Spears was hurt at the end of a running play during team drills when he became caught up in a pile of players. After remaining down briefly, he had to be helped up by teammates before limping to the sideline.
After the practice ended, Jones said team doctors were checking Spears’ knee, along with his groin and ankle. He mentioned a knee sprain and a groin pull as possible injures, but wouldn’t elaborate.
“All that’s real preliminary, but that’s the area that’s injured. We’re checking everything,” Jones said. “It’s tough. I’m very, very disappointed. It’s a shame.”
Coach Bill Parcells said he didn’t want to speculate on Spears’ injury, but said the first thing doctors were going to do was scan the knee.
Parcells said someone got Spears “from behind a little bit” during the play.
Once Spears got to the sideline, Parcells and team trainer Jim Maurer checked on the 6-foot-4, 294-pound defensive end who was the 20th overall pick by the Cowboys in April.
Spears then limped the length of the field, putting little pressure on his right leg. After he got on a training table and doctors examined his right knee, he was put on a cart and driven off the field.
“Let’s just hope for the best,” Jones said.
I googled “marcus spears injury” at 5:55 est and no new info is out there.

you’re all forgetting one name…laroy glover. he’s undersized when it comes to playing the nose in the 3-4, but has just the right combination of size and speed to make an impact at defensive end. watch for glover to battle canty and coleman for the starting nod when they’re in the 3-4.

Question for those who have seen the video — was Spears wearing one of those precautionary knee braces the o-linemen use? That might explain the MRI’s on the hip and ankle — if the knee is supported the force is borne by the other leg joints. That doesn’t mean his knee is fine, but it might mean the injury is less severe than without the brace.

Here’s a couple of links to stories on this. They all pretty much say the same thing. Sounds like they are leaning toward knee sprain and Groin pull as the preliminary diagnosis. As long as I don’t see the words tear or torn printed next to Spears name I’ll feel better.

My observations, with the video feed: Marcus looks to be putting a significant amount of weight on the right leg and doesn’t appear to be wearing a brace. He took about 8 steps without the support of anyone else.
… But what got the dallascowboys.com guys talking season long injury was Jerry Jones pesimistic responce to questioning. They report that he is usually optimistic.

dallascowboys.com said the team will make an announcement about Spears’ injury at 5pm pacific time (8pm Dallas time) right before they start their 2nd practice tonight. It’s definately a disappointment if Spears is out for an extended time, but I’m not worried. We still have Canty who Parcells said has lots of potential. Also Parcells said Coleman is making real progress at camp.

THIS JUST IN FROM DALLASCOWBOYS.COM:
Injuries to keep Cowboys’ Spears out 4-5 weeks
07:07 PM CDT on Friday, August 5, 2005
By MATT MOSLEY / DallasNews.com
OXNARD, Calif. – Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said late Friday afternoon that first-round draft pick Marcus Spears will be out four to five weeks with a torn MCL, high ankle sprain and a groin pull.
“The good news as I stand here right this minute is there’s a chance he could be back for the opening game of the season,” Jones said. The Cowboys open the regular season against San Diego on Sept. 11.
Coach Bill Parcells said Spears had someone roll onto the back of his knee after a handoff to running back Anthony Thomas during team drills.
by Dan on Aug 5, 2005 7:12 PM CDT reply actions
I guess this is great news considering a lot of us were expecting him to be out for the season!
by Dan on Aug 5, 2005 7:13 PM CDT reply actions
What’s The Scoop:
The Cowboys received some “good news” before Friday’s practice here in training camp at Oxnard, Calif.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he expects rookie defensive end Marcus Spears to miss only 2-4 weeks after suffering multiple injuries Friday morning. Jones said MRI results showed Spears has a Grade-2 MCL sprain, along with a high ankle sprain and a pulled groin.
Spears, who signed a five-year, $9.35 million deal with $6.7 million guaranteed last Saturday, got tangled up in a pile during a run by Anthony Thomas in team drills. He tried to get up on his own but couldn’t put any weight on his right leg, and two teammates eventually helped him to the sideline.
After trying to walk off the injury, Spears limped across the field to the training table and got his leg examined by team trainers. He then was carted back to the club’s locker room, clutching his leg with a mixture of pain and disappointment on his face.
Spears had been working at second-team left end behind Kenyon Coleman throughout camp, though Parcells said he purposely has not played all his potential starters together until after the second preseason game. Spears practiced with the first team during the May mini-camp.
Seventh-round pick Jay Ratliff will likely slide into Spears’ spot with the second team.
by Derrick on Aug 5, 2005 7:33 PM CDT reply actions
2-4 weeks that’s great news lets just hope Spears doesn’t fall to far back. If Spears misses the rest of camp how many more weeks until Parcells is comfortable enough with him in this system to give him regular playing time. My guess is spears doesn’t see the field on a regular basis until week 4 at the earliest.

Bringing this post over from the previous topic regarding ANTONIO BRYANT. See OUCH! Part I for the whole story….
CASH, Thanks for the hit back. And naw, man, Erica P. ainâ€â"¢t gonna run me off of this blog.
JAMES, thanks for the sincere reply.
AW, Youâ€â"¢re right, Keyshawnâ€â"¢s a TE….
Erica P, my, my, my… GOODNESS, dude- OKay, Iâ€â"¢ll stand my my contention that Bryant had the potential to be one of the great Cowboys WRâ€â"¢s. I never said â€Å"Bryant is great†as you quoted earlier. I DID state it would be a while till ANOTHER great reciever comes along. I was thinking another Irvin, Pearson, but okay. YOU GOT ME. Iâ€â"¢d have checked my wording better if iâ€â"¢d known you had NO LIFE and picked apart peopleâ€â"¢s posts when they are critical of Parcells….
Iâ€â"¢ll also stand by my belief that Parcells failed to bring out the best in this guy. He was the real deal, and YOU can cry about it all you want. If you couldnâ€â"¢t see this guyâ€â"¢s potential than you either donâ€â"¢t know football, werenâ€â"¢t watchn the games, or your rose-colored glasses are glues to your face.
How do you see things? Anyone who disagrees with Parcells is an idiot? Iâ€â"¢m as true a Dallas fan as anyone on here, and weâ€â"¢re ALL entitled to our opinions. Who annointed YOU the blog watchdog, anyway?
Youâ€â"¢ve been posting all freakn day, man. Got a life??!!! Sad….
Now Bryant is making some good noise in Cleveland. GOOD FOR HIM! Maybe they can get him to perform at the level heâ€â"¢s capable of. Parcell sure couldnâ€â"¢t…
But Erica Pâ€â"¢s sure gonna root against him!! What are you afraid of, brother? Youâ€â"¢d rather the kid be a FAILURE wherever he goes now because you donâ€â"¢t want to have to admit that we MAY HAVE MADE a mistake when we traded him? What kind of person are you, Eric? It says a lot about you, dude, with your â€Å"We donâ€â"¢t tolerate that crap here†attitude, and then youâ€â"¢ll root against the kid when he appears to be turning things around. Youâ€â"¢re standards are so high, dude. Youâ€â"¢re a class act, Erica, really.
And hey, ERICA, I ainâ€â"¢t name-calling you, sweetheart. Iâ€â"¢m just trying to â€Å"motivate†you to get your priorities straight, not be so venomous, and maybe think for yourself. Remember, weâ€â"¢re all rooting for the same team here. Just cuz other posters donâ€â"¢t see things as you do, doesnâ€â"¢t mean you have to get all bent out of shape. If this makes me a name-caller, than take it up with your hubby, Parcells- I learned the technique from him… worked for Terry….

Rich,
I don’t wish Bryant any ill will, but I do think the fact is slowly sinking into his cement-thick head that this is his last chance. And the irony — he’s having to shut up and perform for one of Parcells’ disciples. I read a story the week that Romeo Crennel was hired that he was ready to cut three players immediately upon being hired — Jeff Garcia, Ross Verba and Bryant — because they were locker room cancers. Garcia and Verba are long gone, so I guess Antonio got the message loud and clear because he’s still around.
That said, I’m going to wait to see how he performs in real games. I looked up his stats in K.C. Joyner’s book and was surprised that he was one of the very worst WRs at getting downfield last year, even after joining Cleveland. The Browns rag-armed QBs probably had something to do with that, but the early flashes he showed in Dallas suggested this guy could be the whole package. Say what you will about Keyshawn, but he was a MUCH better down the field player than Antonio in ’04.
And I’ll agree, Parcells is far from perfect, but no coach can tolerate a guy who rubs a jersey in his face. Especially if he’s not a starter.
by Rafael Vela on Aug 5, 2005 10:33 PM CDT reply actions
Rafael Vela,
Good post, interesting stuff.
My deal about Bryant (and I know i’m not the only one that wanted him to stick around) is that I think Parcells could have handled him better. Bringing in Keyshawn was a great move; I’m glad we have him. But I just don’t see Antonio tossing a jersey in Bill’s face for nothing. You’ve got to be really ticked-off to pull that with ANY coach; I was shocked when it happened.
Now, I totally blame Bryant for that- TOTALLY. But, it’s hard for me to believe that Parcells, in his infinite wisdom, couldn’t see that Antonio was an imature and emotional player. I think with the right handling, this all could have been avoided. I wasn’t there. I can only speculate, but if Parcells thought his “shut up and do what I say” thing was gonna work on a KID as volatile as Bryant, well, c’mon. Parcells’ job is to coach, which means TEACH, not just bark at people. You’ve got to bring these some of these players along, IF they show they’ve got the talent worthy of the effort. Bryant surely did.
What worked for Terry ("she") and maybe Spears (“Fats Domino”) ain’t gonna work for everyone. When Parcells picked up on Antonio’s attitude, he shoulda pulled him aside and said, “Look, son, we need your talent on this team, and you have a lot to contribute to this franchise, but you’ve got to pay your dues and learn your place. We WANT you here and we VALUE your skills as a player, but this is a team sport and you’ve still a lot to learn….”
I’m not saying that would have worked on this kid, but I’d take my chances with that approach over how I suspect Parcells really handled him, especially once Keyshawn showed up. I DON’T KNOW THIS; I can only presume based on how Parcells has handled SOME other players in the past.
Remember, some of these kids go into college and then the NFL with little or no socialization, what some may call “character”. The coaches that can spot this and cultivate these players into the individuals we WANT on our team will ultimately be more successful that those that can’t. I guess Parcells, with his “I ain’t got time” attitude, is one of those that can’t.
Antonio probably may never get this sort of guidance from any coach. But I still think Bryant would have been worth the effort and the patience, for what it’s worth. And I’ll state it again, man- if you can REACH some of these talented kids in a way that’s deep and personable, so that they GROW as individuals as well as players, they’ll BLEED for you, and ultimately your team, OUR team, would be better for it. Go Cowboys.
Respectful to the blog,
Richard

I would have had Keyshawn go to dinner with Bryant as soon as Johnson got to town. It would have been his job to make Bryant the next Johnson. Same jon Rivera has with Peterman.

Gents,
We’ll find out if the more temperate approach works. Crennel, from what I understand, is every bit the stickler for discipline and detail that Parcells is, but seems to have a calmer demeanor and a lighter touch. If he gets the best out of Bryant, I think your points about Parcells will resonate. We can only hope that Patrick Crayton comes on, so that this is not too big a burr in the team’s side — assuming Crennel can turn Antonio around. If he can’t, then I imagine nobody can.

You guys have got to be kidding……at what point does a
guy who has been in the nfl for 3 years take any responsibility
for his actions??
How do you know K.J. or T. glenn didn’t try to have dinner
with A.B.?Maybe A.B. who was a problem before B.P.
got to Dallas said no.You can only teach or mentor someone
who is willing to learn. My understanding of jersey incident
is it started between AB and key then an assistant got
involved and then B.P. came over AB took off his jersey
and threw it on the ground a clear sign of disrespect to
the whole dallas organization then B.P. threw it at him
and A.B. threw it back at B.P..
To expect any coach to spend so much time with one
player is unrealistic especially given the number of
problems with the cowboys. But why does AB deserve
all B.P. attention???Why not Q. Carter or W. Blade or
P. hunter or the countless other guys JJ drafted who
had tremendous potential but fell short on the field.
Why should the guy who is giving up on routes, has alot
of drops and complains get rewarded while the other
guys who doing their job don’t?
As for B.P. “not having time "how many other head
coaches have called players parents in an attempt
to "reach them”?Or how many head coaches personally
hold punt return class for anyone who wants go
after mini camp?
Whether AB does well is up to one person…… AB.
Oh yeah and isn’t AB’s contract up this year?
Me I’ll stick with the guys who have won the S.B.
and been to the Pro Bowl …….and played hurt..
…and you know gotten it done on the field as
opposed to some potential fantasy league.

Lets resort to name calling! How intelligent!
“Antonio Bryant is GREAT” – WRONG – Just look at his stats!! 700 yards and 4 TDs per year doesn’t qualify him as good, none-the-less “GREAT” as you say! You may have “honest eyes”, but they are more useful when you open them up.
“Parcells definitely handled Bryant the wrong way.” – WRONG AGAIN – Antonio Bryant was a “problem” before Parcells ever got to Big D. His “bad attitude” dropped his stock significantly on DRAFT DAY. Antonio Bryant’s failure in Dallas is one person’s fault … Antonio Bryant’s!!
Becker is right (Thanks Becker): “Why should the guy who is giving up on routes, has alot of drops, and complains, get rewarded while the other guys who doing their job donâ€â"¢t?” Bryant creates a distraction for the whole team. Who needs that?
Shapen up or ship out!!! .. Its really funny Rich, that when Rafael makes the same point as me, you kiss his butt, but with me you revert to stomping up and down, wagging your fist, and calling names. Grow up you fool. Oh and FYI, the luxery of work allows me to sit and post, and keep an eye on my team. .. There is only one thing I like about Coach Parcells style. It is the results. He may be a manipulator, he may be lazy, he may be all the things that people say about him. If any of you that hate Parcells could do better then why aren’t you coaching football at the Professional level. Parcells has proven himself both on the field and in the hearts of many of his players. Obviously many of his players respect Parcells, and know what he brings to the field with him. He may not call the rght play at times, he may not draft the right player, and he may fail to motivate every player he comes in contact with. My one question is how does this make him the target of such negativity. I hope Antonio Bryant all the good life has to offer. I wish Quincy gets his life together. Every player that has put on the Silver and Blue is alright with me. They may have not lived up to their potential. They may have stunk up the house. Gary Hogeboom may embarass the Cowboy nation with his stint on “Survivor”, but they are and were Dallas Cowboys. Duane Thomas and Tom Landry didn’t see eye to eye during his time in Dallas. It didn’t stop me from cheering for the young man for his talent. I will always think of players who played for he cowboys fondly. If that makes me a homer, then so be it. I hope each of you a blessed day.

by Cash on Aug 6, 2005 5:12 PM CDT reply actions
Cash,
I am sure that a lot of the 6-10 season can be laid at Parcells door. The players have to take some of the hit on the season as well. Regardless the reason, none of us are happy with the outcome. Hopefully the deficits that were shown in our team through their performance have been remedied. I believe we are on our way to stomping those Eagles you are referring to. 6-10 is more or less what I expected the previous season, but those Cowboys overachieved. The loss of Woodson who I think was the glue that cemented the defense was a severe blow to the season. Take also the loss of Glenn and Johnson for part of the season and you see the result. Every team has injuries and some overcome and other do not. We did not.

Hey sorry I’ve missed so much and I am glad that a couple of y’all have a sense of humor.
The facts are now in about the tumor in Spears leg. I turns out that it was made of cheese and so Jones traded him to Green Bay for Favre. Favre will start out as our new free safety instead of Keith Davis who reportedly was shot in the rear again outside of his church. He was however shot with a bb gun and is only expected to miss three weeks or so.
The bionic eye that Canty received has an xray benefit so between plays he will join some of the coaches in the box so that he can seed through the play sheets of the opposing coaches.
Ware was seen wearing high heels in the locker room and it was then determined that his true identity is that of non other than Serena Williams.
