Is this as bad as it sounds (offense)?

by Quaggs on Aug 13, 2005 9:50 PM CDT reply actions

Wondering if there’s an internet radio feeder that broadcasts the preseason, I tried the dallascowboys.com one, but i guess you have to pay real media, so is there a free one out there?

by Phil on Aug 13, 2005 9:54 PM CDT reply actions

It’s not looking too good, but it is a first game. The biggest problem I see now is the OL is not giving the offense a chance. They are looking at Gurode at C and Pettiti and RT. Johnson and Jacobs had been outplaying them in camp up to this point, so I can only HOPE that is the problem.

by Raul Villaronga on Aug 13, 2005 10:07 PM CDT reply actions

bad when the mvp so far is the punter!

by Eddie Rivers on Aug 13, 2005 10:08 PM CDT reply actions

this looks extermely bad. Nobody open to pass to, Bledsoe hanging to the ball too long, defense not covering crap, no blitzing….no excuse being the first game, it is also AZ’s first game……this sucks.

by ManTab on Aug 13, 2005 10:11 PM CDT reply actions

Maybe we’re trying to lull the rest of the league into a false sense of security – that tricky Parcells!

Kickers look good so far. Let’s see Cundif’s 1st kickoff.

by Big Jim on Aug 13, 2005 10:28 PM CDT reply actions

Okay, not impressed.

by Big Jim on Aug 13, 2005 10:30 PM CDT reply actions

good this is terrible,c undiffs field goal was nice

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 10:30 PM CDT reply actions

okay guys its halftime what did you think thus far??

we agree mcbriar looked good, beriault int holla

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 10:32 PM CDT reply actions

ware looked confused, henry looked ok, burnett seems to be where the ball is, davis looked out of position a few times there, o-line for the first team was terrible.

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 10:33 PM CDT reply actions

I’m hopeful about Henry back there … Parcells wasn’t kidding when he said he’s better than anyone that was back there opposite Newman last year.

That’s about all I got right now … we have to remember that while we would love for the guys to win the game, the important thing is to find out what the other guys have.

Here’s what I got:

Pettiti: He’s a rookie. And he looks it. Having him block Okeafor is a plain mismatch.

Henry: like I said, I think he’ll do fine.

Davis: Agreed that he looks out of position on plays. But I’d still rather have any FS back there to allow Roy to play up.

Gurode: Got a holding call on a first down call in the 1st qtr. Bad move, dude. I think Johnson is the man to start at C but it’s nice for Gurode to get some quality time at the position.

Witten: The man.

Bledsoe: Wow, what can I say … if the OL doesn’t block better for him that what I saw the first half, he’s gonna get killed. Hopefully Jacobs and Johnson will solidfy the front.

Romo: Not bad. Coming out on the first play and making a beautiful touch pass to Witten was nice. He want, what 5-for-5, 50 yards? Not bad…

by Raul Villaronga on Aug 13, 2005 10:41 PM CDT reply actions

missed the first two series, did Glover or Ellis play? how bout Rivera?

by Quaggs on Aug 13, 2005 10:42 PM CDT reply actions

this is terrible. the OL looks pitiful. and drew looks like the bills made the right decesion letting him go. on defense, where the hell is the pass rush?

by don pertha on Aug 13, 2005 10:42 PM CDT reply actions

glover double teamed didnt do anything dont think he got a tackle, ellis didnt see him. ware had 1 tackle i think. rivera looked fine but the o-line was bad.
and as far as ware goes i saw him start to rush the qb only to stop, i think hes a little timid right now i think hes thinking to much about missing assignments

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 10:45 PM CDT reply actions

also, we have got to get some big time recievers in here who can get open. im sorry but glenn and johnson were not open.

by don pertha on Aug 13, 2005 10:46 PM CDT reply actions

Jacobs is outta the game again, this time hurt knee……

by sharkz on Aug 13, 2005 10:46 PM CDT reply actions

o and thank you raul for the open thread, is this something thatll be here every game???

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 10:46 PM CDT reply actions

The first team offensive line looked like they were not in sync. Sometimes it seemed as if the line was not giving Bledsoe not enough time and at other times it seemed as if Bledsoe was holding the ball too long.

On the other hand, Romo looked as if he was making his reads alot faster and was getting rid of the ball alot faster, but this may be because he may have been focusing on Witten as he completed 3 catches in a row.

The kicking game seems ok so far.

As for the first team defense, no pressure on the QB, but then again whats new? I dont know about Ware going into passing coverage with the likes of Fitzgerald. Ware did seem lost a couple of times, and he was beat pretty badly and got caught inside on a running play that bounced out on his side. Ware is alot bigger on the field that i first realized, and i did see that he does have that lateral speed around the offensive tackle that we have been hearing about in camp, but he didnt have any sacks in the first half.

The offensive unit still needs alot of work.

by Chris on Aug 13, 2005 10:48 PM CDT reply actions

by ManTab on Aug 13, 2005 11:13 PM CDT reply actions

mantab,
this is horrible to watch isnt it?

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 11:16 PM CDT reply actions

An open letter to coach Parcells:

Dearest Coach,

Please do yourself three favors today.

1) Tell the team to get their heads out of their sphinkters.

2) Show them that you mean it by cutting Torrin Tucker before you leave the stadium. Don’t bring him back to Oxnard, mail him his s***.

3) Send Steve Hoffman a game ball for finding Matt McBriar for you.

by Big Jim on Aug 13, 2005 11:16 PM CDT reply actions

lol @ big jim. everything you put is true.

spaggs said mcbriar is our player of the game which is also true

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 11:18 PM CDT reply actions

Mike, yes….it hurts.

by ManTab on Aug 13, 2005 11:18 PM CDT reply actions

move larry allen to RT and put peterman in the starting lineup. until the OL is fixed we are going no where.

by don pertha on Aug 13, 2005 11:18 PM CDT reply actions

bp put ware back in to give him more reps im assuming.

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 11:20 PM CDT reply actions

I’m just watchin the NFL.com gameupdate, can anyone tell me how our 3-4 is holding up against the run? I can only see stats, and they don’t say too much, cept for the penalties we (by we I mean Tucker) keep racking up

by David-CT on Aug 13, 2005 11:20 PM CDT reply actions

there run defense is good in the 3-4 the problem is we get lil to no pass rush

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 11:22 PM CDT reply actions

what is going on with people losing there damn helmet? every freakin play someone has there helmet knocked off. here comes drew i throw ducks henson

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 11:24 PM CDT reply actions

Unfortunately, here’s where we win the game – which takes the heat off a little.

by Big Jim on Aug 13, 2005 11:27 PM CDT reply actions

mike:

I think the reason for that is that the coaches are not letting the LBs cut loose. I think they want to see the team play the base 3-4 and see how they react. With the speed that this team has at LB I can see no other reason to not pressure the QB. I see no blitzes, no stunts, nothing but a vanilla 3-4 defense, which tells me that the coaching staff is allowing the guys to learn the defense before they throw in the wrinkles.

At least, that’s what I’m going with …

by Raul Villaronga on Aug 13, 2005 11:28 PM CDT reply actions

wow thompson is damn fast

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 11:28 PM CDT reply actions

tyson thompson is going to be a problem to cut……

by ManTab on Aug 13, 2005 11:29 PM CDT reply actions

that and i know they are trying to keep things as simple as possible, with blitz packages and stuff like that. i also know its the first game but this does scare me a lil bit, you can see some lil spots of encouragement though to.

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 11:30 PM CDT reply actions

were TT’s kick returns anything special, on paper they were bout what we were gettin last year, but did he impress anyone?

by David-CT on Aug 13, 2005 11:30 PM CDT reply actions

wtf calling grounding 2 minutes late wtf????

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 11:31 PM CDT reply actions

dont think he returned any but hes at rb right now and you can see how fast he is and its extremely fast.

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 11:32 PM CDT reply actions

A little background:

Remember a couple of weeks ago when Parcells said he likes to play his backup QB third? That way if he leads the team to victory, the team learns to count on that guy?

Henson is going to rack up the stats now (because he’s playing against 3rd and 4th stringers). Parcells knows he can do it – remember the touchdown drive against the Ravens last year in garbage time.

Might not neccessarily mean anything, but it might be a glimpse into what BP really thinks.

by Big Jim on Aug 13, 2005 11:34 PM CDT reply actions

speaking of Henson, how’s his motion look? Is he reverting back to the sidearm, or does he have some accuracy and kick to his shoulder-level pass?

by David-CT on Aug 13, 2005 11:35 PM CDT reply actions

Henson looks a lot better than all those bad comments during camp…a lot better

by ManTab on Aug 13, 2005 11:35 PM CDT reply actions

11/86 yds on penalties thus far bp is gonna be pissed tomorrow

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 11:36 PM CDT reply actions

And who the hell is Curtis??

by Chandus on Aug 13, 2005 11:36 PM CDT reply actions

Mr and Ms Curtis son. Will be playing in Canada this season.

by Big Jim on Aug 13, 2005 11:38 PM CDT reply actions

And Parcells should be pissed, especially for that 3rd and 50…..

by Chandus on Aug 13, 2005 11:38 PM CDT reply actions

LOL, Big Jim… I didn’t saw the catch, I’m following the game on NFL.com, might have been a good pass…

by Chandus on Aug 13, 2005 11:39 PM CDT reply actions

I guess that Henson reverted himself, now 3-6 for 34

by Chandus on Aug 13, 2005 11:41 PM CDT reply actions

Chandus.

Just BSing. Curtis is a backup TE that Parcells said was “In the mix.” Maybe he makes the practice squad.

No offence to the Curtis’ family or Canada (those knobs).

man tt can turn them corners real fast, real fast

by mike on Aug 13, 2005 11:56 PM CDT reply actions

Thompson looking good…..

by sharkz on Aug 13, 2005 11:56 PM CDT reply actions

but nothing through the middle just like they said on TV….TT can only run to the outside….hummmm….

by ManTab on Aug 14, 2005 12:00 AM CDT reply actions

13-9 cards

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:00 AM CDT reply actions

Do we have it in our game plan to score a TD, or are we still just evaluating?

by Big Jim on Aug 14, 2005 12:00 AM CDT reply actions

Henson 4-10 for 43, still under lots of pressure or looking exactly as predicted (inconsistent)?

by Chandus on Aug 14, 2005 12:01 AM CDT reply actions

ive noticed that myself he doesnt run hard into the middle he kinda looks like hes hoping for a hole to open instead of going in full blast, and then just kinda falling over.

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:01 AM CDT reply actions

at least we scored i was hoping we didnt get shut-out again.

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:02 AM CDT reply actions

Yep TT runs well outside but looks tentitive inside

by sharkz on Aug 14, 2005 12:02 AM CDT reply actions

What’s the point in going for a Touchdown? The team is already looking bad, add an interception and they would only look worst… My guess is that Parcells is going to chew the 95% of the squad, with Tucker prolly gone by Monday.

by Chandus on Aug 14, 2005 12:03 AM CDT reply actions

I agee Chandus…..

by sharkz on Aug 14, 2005 12:05 AM CDT reply actions

ware almost got his first sack close, pepper is a beast

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:05 AM CDT reply actions

11-13 safety nice special teams play by crowder blocked punt

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:06 AM CDT reply actions

Yes, TT looks bad while running to the middle because he’s tall and lean, how much does he weights? 200 pounds for a 6-2 RB? Running straight to the line without a hole would be like going to a wall. But he’s good in KR and going to the outside, so it’s good.

by Chandus on Aug 14, 2005 12:07 AM CDT reply actions

ok 1 good drive end it with a lil hope for us here

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:08 AM CDT reply actions

i dont think a-train had alot of carries, maybe bp knows what he has and wants to see mb3 and tt more or if a-train is gone?

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:10 AM CDT reply actions

Thomas had 1 carry. I think that he wants to see those other guys.

by Chandus on Aug 14, 2005 12:12 AM CDT reply actions

I have to believe BP finds a spot on the roster for Crowder. He truly is a special teamer in the Bill Bates mold, only faster. That blocked punt was a tremendously athletic play.

I’d cut Tucker for Crowder any day. And Thompson will make this team.

by Raul Villaronga on Aug 14, 2005 12:12 AM CDT reply actions

48 yards to get the lead…….Cundiff?

by ManTab on Aug 14, 2005 12:14 AM CDT reply actions

true bp loved his special teams, so crowder should make this team, cundiff for 52 yds for the possible win

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:14 AM CDT reply actions

oops sorry 47 yds, though they said 52

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:14 AM CDT reply actions

lol now its 52, false start.

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:15 AM CDT reply actions

53 now……man, I hope BP survives the night…nightmares are going to be horrible

by ManTab on Aug 14, 2005 12:15 AM CDT reply actions

o well we had the chance wide left hooked at the last second

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:16 AM CDT reply actions

Looks pretty bad……..hope this changes

by Raul Villaronga on Aug 14, 2005 12:18 AM CDT reply actions

Okay,

Keith Davis becomes our starting FS because Crowder can take his spot.
Nice blocked kick and a nice earlier tackle from “gunner” on punt coverage.

by Big Jim on Aug 14, 2005 12:18 AM CDT reply actions

ok guys ball game what do you guys think???

i think next game the rookies will be better lil less nervous, mcbriar is gonna be fine. o-line like ive said and everyone else needs improvement, 12 penalties, ouch

by Raul Villaronga on Aug 14, 2005 12:23 AM CDT reply actions

Ball game? That’s arguable… Thompson or McBriar? Would be sad to have our punter as the MVP, so let’s name Thompson for our sake.

by Chandus on Aug 14, 2005 12:23 AM CDT reply actions

Anyone catch Tompson picking up any bliztes?

by Cash on Aug 14, 2005 12:30 AM CDT reply actions

Bill has to start by getting the O-Line to get off the stinkin ball. Some of the game appeared to me that the Cards Defense knew what the count was and the O-Line was reacting to them. Dreadful O-Line play.

And apparently Demarcus has been such an animal in practice because Flozell the Hotel couldn’t block me. Did you guys see Zim putting Ware in for passing situations throughout the game? He couldn’t log a sack against 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team tackles.

Maybe I’m just disheartned because our first unit got destroyed tonight by the Cards. Remember when “The Cards Sucked?”

by Stringo on Aug 14, 2005 12:36 AM CDT reply actions

Not missing Testaverde, as I recall, Dallas looked worst last year with Testaverde in the first Preseason game and everyone behind him, and in the year prior was the same story, so the world isn’t ending.

by Chandus on Aug 14, 2005 12:36 AM CDT reply actions

Yes, Stringo, you’re right, The cards won’t suck this year, they’re legitimate contenders in the West. They have a solid OLine to give Warner enough time, a great WR corps and a pretty solid D, their only questionable part is their RB corps.

by Chandus on Aug 14, 2005 12:40 AM CDT reply actions

Witten was great. I thought the d did fairly well. We all knew it would take a little while for the d to gel. The question is, how long? Whatever Parcells " plan B" is, were goin with it. Tucker is like a really mean practical joke that makes u cry. Here’s hoping that this was just knocking the rust off. Now im gonna go say a prayer.

by ericp on Aug 14, 2005 1:14 AM CDT reply actions

I will say this (mostly to myself), with all the new people and new defensive scheme, this isnt the end of the world. It makes sense that we would take a few games to tie it all together. I just hope we pull it together sooner than later.

by ericp on Aug 14, 2005 1:22 AM CDT reply actions

Raul,

Don’t forget the play that Crowder made on kickoff coverage. He flew downfield, knifed around everyone, and cut down the return man, even though he was being pushed in the back at the time.

I haven’t heard the post-game press conference myself, but I read on another forum that Parcells didn’t seem angry at all. Supposedly, he claimed that Arizona put a lot more of a game plan in than they had expected.

by Mr. Bill on Aug 14, 2005 1:38 AM CDT reply actions

Thats interesting. I know they left warner in there for a while too.

by ericp on Aug 14, 2005 1:41 AM CDT reply actions

agreed ericp, but you have to look at this and hope we improve. i know its just the start, and in 85 the bears lost every preseason game there was before winning the super bowl but, its not like the first team played good and the reserves blew it. it was the other way around the first was absolutely horrendous. i cant really find 1 good thing about the starters except whitten. no pressure what so ever even in garbage time against there 2-3rd string. i dont recall a sack at all. we gave up 4-5 sacks i believe drew was knocked down numerous times, you have to take this for what it was but not to a point where your not concerned, cause i am.

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 1:42 AM CDT reply actions

Is it me or did DC.com and DMN.com drop the ball?

It was questionable to me wheather or not I would get to see the game at my local sports bar.

Then, I saw “LIVE game broadcast” on DC.com. I figured, no problem, I’ll just listen to it at home while I get some work done. As everyone else experienced-it didn’t work.

At halftime there was a short blurb on DC.com. Nothing on DMN.com

After the game there were the same links to the “Live postgame broadcast” on DC.com – which didn’t work again, and a small article on DMN.

I swear, I got more of the game watching the play by play stats on NFL.com and reverting to this blog between plays.

Was there no BP press conference after the game? No player comments?

I sent an email to DC.com and asked them what the deal was. I didn’t expect them to respond, but of course they’re the ones who had “Email us a question here” under the broadcast link.

Rafael, if you get ten seconds with Jerry Jones, please let him know that there is plenty of money to be made making the preseason games available in some fashion. I would have gotten some buddies together and paid $44.95 on pay per view to see the game – before I knew how badly we were going to play.

Ya it was sweet when Romo came out and just started lobbing passes at witten and he caught every one. If we can get something going offensively and everyone isnt looking at him. He’ll be AWSOME!!!! But ur right that their first team dominated ours all the way. Both sides of the ball really, although the d was better than the o. Henry looked REALLY good!

your right the defense wasnt to bad, im just frustrated right now.

i think raul said the run defense was good and he was right even though the cards have no real rb threat.

we just need more pass rush hopefully they will put in some blitz packages for the next game, i really didnt notice any blitzing at all for the first team.

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 1:52 AM CDT reply actions

I think we saw very little of our new d scheme. Dont get me wrong, mike, be cocerned, be very very concerned. After watching things go the way theyve gone the last few years, im fighting panick myself. But the reality is, we’ve made some important changes this year, and im not ready to give up on it all just cause we got slapped around in our 1st pre season game. I sure was ready to see a refreshing looking bunch of guys though, and this was the same old depressing stuff as last year. I know he was playing against starters, and he wasnt throwing the short easy passes the other two were, but bledsowe looked worse than the other two guys. No, i think ur right mike, its time to be at least a little concerned. Just not time for out and out panick. We’ll start that next week after seattle kicks our butts(just kidding).

by ericp on Aug 14, 2005 2:03 AM CDT reply actions

Hey guys, thought I’d ring in on whether we should start hitting the panic button. A lot of fans want to say their 1st team vs our 1st team, but really its not about that all the time. The coaching staff knows what they have in some players, and Parcells was adomate about properly evaluating his younger players, and see how they react “when the lights are on them”. I would venture a guess that sometimes this evaluating process involves putting these players in tough situations, situations you would normally avoid in the regular season. Parcells and the rest of his staff has to see what these guys can handle, and have to put them in difficult game situations. Per say, you probably wouldn’t call a sweep to Pettitti’s side if he were playing against Julius Peppers, but in the preseason you may want to test the rookie to see how well he handles it. So let’s not hit the panic button quite yet.

Pros:

Romo looked good.
McBriar was a weapon.
The defense held up against the run.
Witten of course.
No injuries.

What was up with JJ? (Wasn’t able to watch) Did the Cards stack against the run because recievers couldn’t get open? O-Line seemed to play badly. Was that it? I mean 6 carries 10 yards?

The line stank it up pretty much. Even Rivera gave up a sack.
LA seemed to be about the only one that was doing ok.
Pettiti on the bad ankle was clearly over matched; would like to have seen what he could do on a good ankle. Tucker sucked as bad as possible- Phil Pozderac looked better111
Peterman- OUCH.

by Burmafrd on Aug 14, 2005 9:43 AM CDT reply actions

For those of you that have not been long time Cowboys watchers, Phil Pozderac in the early 80’s has for a long time been considered the worst tackle we ever had (holding 3 plays in a row is a record). Tucker is now a contendah!!!

by Burmafrd on Aug 14, 2005 9:46 AM CDT reply actions

Tucker is definitely done after 2 holding penalties. Rogers is, as the Air Force guys would say, a “hangar queen”. He can’t play witout getting hurt. That Thompson at TB is sure going to make decisions difficult on September 4. Bledsoe looked like CRAP! Witten is a TOTAL STUD! Too bad the mediots won’t give him the credit he deserves. I have been all over the net and cannot find any defensive stats (individual). So I will hold my peace on that subject, except to say that we got no sacks. Beriault is a lock for the final roster, just don’t know where he’ll end up.

by James on Aug 14, 2005 10:53 AM CDT reply actions

Burmafrd you are soooooo right!!! Pozderic…lol….he was the poster boy for holding calls!!!!If we had one inch at their goal line on 4th down with one sec to play he would hold…..Seriously we have ALOT of work to do,but at least we have a few bright spots.Henry and Newman played well,Romo looked good, our punter looked great,Thompson gives us an outside running threat, and Crowder might have played his way onto the final roster(if he keeps it up and can possibly contribute in some other position such as reciever) Bledsoe looked awful….but it’s early

by sharkz on Aug 14, 2005 11:25 AM CDT reply actions

read spaggs article itll help out with last nights results. he says the cardinals did alot of blitzing, which i didnt really notice. but he said the cowboys were not ready for so much blitzing.
second when the cards had there 3 receiver sets out we stayed in the 3-4 to see how the linebackers would react to there asssignments. so alot of times ware for example would be 20 yds down field covering fitz.
petitte looked alot better then tucker i think. if rogers isnt healthy i think petitte could start by regular season.
whitten is good.
as far as jj is concerned they did do some run blitzing i noticed that.
EricR thank you for reminding me what parcells said about evaluating the rookies and younger guys, hopefully monday will be different.

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 11:26 AM CDT reply actions

While our failure to get a consistent pass rush was certainly disconcerting, we must realize that the Cowboys rarely blitzed. Most of the time, the linebackers all dropped back into coverage. That negates the advantages of the 3-4. A pass rush is difficult to generate with just 3 people. It is also NOT the best way to play against Kurt Warner. In the regular season, we would never have played that way.

Ware was able to get some pressure while rushing from RDE out of a 3-point stance, when we were in the nickel. Unfortunately, he didn’t have much help, and Warner was able to step up, out of his way.

I’m much more concerned about the poor play of our offensive line. I think we can live with the rest of them, if we can find a solution at right tackle. For a while, I thought Rogers would be it. But, to play well a person has to actually be on the field. Rogers seems incapable of achieving that goal. [If Rogers has an MCL problem, he’ll probably be out until the opening game.] I have no idea what we are going to do there. Petitti is not yet ready for this level of competition. Tucker is just incompetent. Whether Allen could play there or not might be moot, given Peterman’s poor play at LG last night. It would do little good to fix RT at the expense of LG. That leaves Vollers. Even if he can play adequately, that leaves us woefully thin at tackle.

On the other hand, the Cardinals were run-blitzing the hell out of us, which is not common practice for a first preseason game. That explains why we had such a difficult time trying to run up the middle with Jones (and in general). That, and the fact that Petitti could not seem to keep Oleafor out of the play.

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 11:48 AM CDT reply actions

Seems to me like we are in dire need of a quarterback still, nothing changed except the receivers are a little older and look worse in their route running… not that it would really matter since no blocking whatsoever, and when Tucker does try he holds virtually every play. Bledsoe no mobility at all and with another great year of watching our offensive line, maybe he’ll last a game or 2, even if he is pitiful. All the great hype about the new defense, thats where they evidently were last night behind it or under it, (weren’t in front of it), I haven’t yet found out but if I hear where I’ll let eveyone know. They have no one to return punts or kickoffs and the way the defense will give up points there will be lots of kicks. Hey we can look at the bright side, there won’t be very many punt returns as the defense looks to stop nobody. We’ll be anticipating next year or a miracle this year.

like i said before; and everyone laughed at me. we may need to sign ‘ross verba’. if we put Larry at RT; we are only weaking 2 spots; not solving. tucker would not even be on the plane to dallas, or oxnard. i would call his parents and tell them to come and get him and yell at them for their screw up.

the way our o-line blocked. i would put jj, a-train, and TT in a triple i, and run the option outside. there was a play where betran berry made adams look like his cell mate, and made him like it.

the cards had no respect for our wr’s. and they loaded up the line. now i was one of the bandwagon jumpers and saying that the cards could go to the playoffs, but we didn’t have to make them look so good. the way we made them look. they might as well hand them the trophy and the dolphins undefeated record is in jeopardy.

antrol rolle will become a beast for the cards at corner. that is why i wanted dallas to get him.

if TT and crowder doesn’t make the team. bp should be fired, and j jones should call it quits. and speaking of that. he should file bankruptcy on the player for their proformance.

here is a list of things to do monday.

1.) Call Verba’s agent and make out a deal with incentives.
2.) make them run until parcell looses 10 pounds.
3.) start fining the players $500 for every bone-headed error that they made.
4.) give the game ball to the punter.

as you may see that i didn’t mention tucker. like i said. he would find his own way home. becasue of rule #3. he owns the cowboys for letting him play last night and he can’t afford the phone call to his parents.

“Pro’s”
1.crowder is an awesome special teams demon.
2.TT is “wow” fast.
3.mcbair was the mvp. OOPS!! i may should have put that one in the con’s.
4.“NO” interceptions.
5. no serious injuries; other than the dentures marks on tucker butt.
“con’s”
1.mcbair was the mvp.
2. tucker; enough said
3. penalties; tucker again.
4. well, i don’t have all day. there was a lot. the game wasn’t as close as the score. however, our second teamers where playing against their first teamers for most to the 2nd quarter.

But look on the bright side of things. i have alway been told that a good butt kicking builds character. well, they should have some now.

LOL! Parcells may have pulled a fast one on this team. He’s done it before, i.e. give them a crappy game plan so they will suck and he can dog the s**t out them the next week. Some of his mind games have a good purpose, some do not.

by James on Aug 14, 2005 12:41 PM CDT reply actions

BP wanted to check out the secondary and see if the 3-4 could stop the run. It can- at least against the Cardinals. The secondary did very well considering no pressure on the QB. FS is not a strength, but probably is a weakness we can live with.
The same cannot be said for the RT. We need a COMPETENT player there. Pettiti on a bad ankle and learning a new position really does not count. TUcker smells badly- a week old dead fish smells better. Peterman- he looked a lot better last year before his injury- I wonder what is going on there? Johnson got steamrolled a couple of times- that is NOT COMFORTING.
The Hotel right now is totally vacant- was 2003 a fluke?
LA was solid as usual- the one real bright spot on the O line.
RIvera had a bad play that resulted in a sack.

by Burmafrd on Aug 14, 2005 12:51 PM CDT reply actions

i was very dissapopinted last night, in all honesty i was waiting to see ware have 2 sacks and be the force we hear about. jj was gonna have 55yds on 6 carries we were gonna loo like a super bowl team. then after the first possesion i knew i was wrong. and now i think on it i was stupid for thinking as much. bp kept it as simple as high school football for a reason. if the hopefulls are gonna make this team he needs t see what they can do and in a complex system for the first preseason game wouldnt be fair to the rookies and undrafted guys. we did see some bright spots, and thats good. we kept it close which is also good. like the ranch report is saying bp hates to win the first preseason game cause it gets players thinking they are better then they are. confidence is good but over confidence is another thing. bp will be a wrecking crew this week.

by mike on Aug 14, 2005 12:56 PM CDT reply actions

well james
i do understand that he likes to put them in some bad situations to see what they are made of. i know that he put in a new game situation in at every practice. this may have been one of those “whole” game situation.

this is “only” preseason. it is just that there was some really bad plays done by some players that we are depending on. that is what worries me.

however, there was some things that was answered.
1. we can stop the run with the 3-4.
2. our corners are a lot better than last year.
3. our defense will be ok “i think”.
4. our 2nd teamers put the cards 3 and out on 2 different series. that was promising.
5. i think that we found our special-teamer to replace davis when he becomes the FS.

All is not lost, yet. It is just the first pre-season game. However, there do appear to be some shortcomings that we all did not necessarily expect. I am not ready to throw in the towel, but if this continues into the regular season, especially considering last years record, I will begin to wonder like Burmafrd does, was 2003 a fluke?

by James on Aug 14, 2005 1:03 PM CDT reply actions

Darrell,

Speaking of those 2003 Cowboys, they too lost to Arizona in the preseason. As I remember, they lost 13-0 ….. and then in the regular season dominated that same team and won 24-7. ….. Remember too, that preseason, the talk was to get the team some confidence, and win those games. This year the talk has been getting the young players evaluated properly, and getting the team into game situations using the 3-4. As Micky S. pointed out, and I did earlier on this thread, Parcells will put his players in tough situations, to see how they man it. ….. If I am going to worry about anything its that RT spot. Also Stephen Peterman, other than that we still have to wait and see on a lot players.

I hope Cundiff does not get cut because of his miss on the 53 yarder. He was pushed back by Peterman’s penalty. At this point I have not heard of any suitable replacements being available.

Hey did any of you revisit the thread “Week 1 in Review”? .. A lot of good stuff there!! .. I sat back as other bloggers just SQUASHED the anti-Parcells retoric. That was funny. I still can’t see how every topic, someone puts his “BP mind games” spin on it. EVERY TOPIC!!! … Can we get by one topic without this Bill Parcells crap? Please!!!

Here is a good read on the topic of Parcells’ success. Read it, learn, and get over it:

“Both parenting and vocational research studies suggest that Parcellsâ€â"¢ methods are similar to those used by both successful parents and employers. Immediate feedback, involving both consequences and positive reinforcements, are most successful when attempting to change behaviors. Witness both Parcellsâ€â"¢ verbal and facial responses to playersâ€â"¢ actions. Parcells is clear and consistent in his messages to his players. He sets clear boundaries and rules for them and follows through with what he says he is going to do without waffling or changing course. He is not dogmatic in that he is not afraid to make changes or take chances when his own methods have not achieved his goals. Witness the subtle and not so subtle changes in approach between his â€â"¢86 and â€â"¢91 Giants teams, the New England Patriots and his current crop of Jets. All of these skills are necessary in todayâ€â"¢s sports or learning environment. Ask any coach, parent or teacher.” http://www.psychologyofsports.com/couch/couch081997.htm

53 is a long kick for anybody………inside 45 be consistent and Cundiff is that………he will be around for a while yet.

How many carries did Julius Have? Did Keyshawn not play?

It is only our first Preseason………at least Thompson looked good. We can see the holes on the Offensive line that need work. QBs take a little while to get their timing back.

Denny Green can do one thing, he can build a team that can score points and move the football. I think Arizona has one of the more improved squads, and a lot of talent offensively. Give the boys a little credit, this ain’t like beating up on the Cards from back in the day. Arizona has three great young WRs, a rookie RB, and vet QB. They are going to move the ball, if Rolle and the rest step up on Defense that team is going to get better every week. Not sure they win 10 but they might eek out 9. Having said all that………..I ain’t worried to week one of the real season.

by Darrell M on Aug 14, 2005 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

I’m also worried with the OLine… but not that much, Vollers is still there, and is much better than Pettiti and Tucker, but I’m disturbed by Rogers, the guy could be the pass protector the passing play needs in the right side, and now that might could have been…

Other than OLine, I’m not really worried about anything, if the Defense reacts to the Offense that they’re playing against, like placing the nickel against a 3 wide set and giving blitzing duties, they could be really good at it. I didn’t saw the game, but as far as what I’ve heard in NFL.com, DC.com and almost every other major football page is that Arizona Defense didn’t give Bledsoe any chance and basically because both Dallas tackles (Adams and Pettiti) were giving plays for free. While FS is kind of a medium grade, as far as I’ve read, the only time a FS was burned was with that Fitz reception, in which almost every FS in the league would have been burned, so…

And then, I really hope that Tucker is walking his way back to California, I wouldn’t stand to see him back on Monday with a star on his helmet.

It’s good to know that Rafael is going to be present over there in the practices Parcells is going to make his whole team go through, first hand information on Parcells chewing his whole team.

Chandus,

If anything, I am worried about RT. The D was put in a tough situation against 3 WR sets, and really held their own. I have always contended that this defense will be better in December than in September, but as Nick Eatman and plenty of guys here have suggested, the early success of this defense will rely on its ability to stop the run.

Eric R,
Watch your mouth. If there’s any idiots on this Blog, it’s you and your faith in psychology. Have some class unlike the people from Filthydelphia. We are ALL good posters here!

Matt Mosley on cowboysplus.com is reporting that Jacob Rogers sufferred an MCL sprain (similar to Spears) on his knee last night. Check it out. Unfortunately, the guy appears to be a “hangar queen”. Vollers may get the nod yet. Pettiti is too inexperienced and from what we saw last night it would not be a good idea right now to move LA over and replace him with Peterman.

I don’t think we need to go too extreme. We played real sloppy but it was our 1st game. Anyone see how Woody Dantzler did? I didnt even hear the guys name mentioned. At least Witten looked good.

- Randall Williams had 4 catches for 55 yards and a TD for OAK. I know its preseason and probably against the 3rd team defense, but I can’t remember him putting up those numbers for us.

James,

The more you talk and call names, the better you prove your point. Maybe you should revisit that thread “Week 1 in Review”, were the OTHER bloggers tore you up. .. Speaking of GOOD bloggers, which I never said you were not one, a few have suggested that you get a check up from the head up. … Speaking of GOOD posters, which again I never said that you were not part of that group, I believe any opinion is welcome here including yours, even if I disagree whole heartedly. .. But gosh, if every topic turns into this Bill Parcells psychological hogwash, and a lot of it aimed at me and my posts .. then I too have the right to state facts that support my opinion, whether you like it or not! .. I too have the right to question a blogger, if their facts are a little twisted. When I say “a little twisted”, I am being nice. .. Our feud started with my questioning your statement that “Phill Simms hates Parcells” .. and you turned it into a name calling tyraid. .. You keep doing that cause it shows your true character. …… As for what I was saying, nothing about not accepting opinions, but all about posting ficticious injuries and fake posts .. and that should be curbed. Opinions, even yours, is music to my ears. I have learned a lot in my life from listening to others and what they have to say. Unfortunately the folks who revert to cursing and name calling have the least to offer.

I think danzler had one kick return that was fairly impressive in the third quarter. I think it was him. He didnt go far, but he went down fighting and showed some good moves trying to wiggle loose. After some time to reflect, i think it is ok that we stunk. ok because i think parsceel did nothing but try to answer questions he had. I dont think this is anything like the way we will look in the regular season. He even said himself he was suprised that the cards brought such a deep playbook. He kept the o simple cause the o-line was the biggest ques coming into the game. He kept the d simple cause he doesnt want to show the world what it will look like just yet, and its new, so he needs to stay with the basics. He went 3/4 in part, so he could increase the effectiveness of his blitz. We saw very little blitzing last night. I think the d looks pretty good for the plays they were given to work with. The scariest thing about last night was the o-line. Best i can tell, were right back at square one. Rogers is made of glass, man.

Wow Randall W. did that huh! We all know we could use a young receiver to stretch the field. Don’t know if I would be more upset being jealous of Oakland’s WR corps (WOW! Scary!! … I am taking Kerry Collins in my fantasy league for sure!

If you want to be TunaMans toady good for you, it doesn’t mean that I or the rest of the world have to. If you want facts, start with Mosleys column on cowboysplus.com, dated today. The fact from that is that I’m not the only one out there that vigorously challenges the calls that BP makes. If you want facts on the Phil Simms thing, you go to dc.com and see if you can pull up archived articles from January and February of 2003. That’s where the quote came from. As long as I’ve been going to that site their archive has been crap. At least this time you did say I have a right to my opinion, which is an improvement and gives me hope for you.

Here we go again with the impostor.

About the Mosley articla on cowboysplus.com. He titled it “Debacle in the Desert II”, refferring to the 13-0 shellacking we got first game of pre-season in 2003. I remember that game pretty well and we did have a pretty good season that year. It seems to me our performance was slightly better this time around, so that might turn into a better result this regular season. I have always thought that you’re better off getting your ass kicked in pre-season and getting all the kinks worked out before the games start counting. We’ll see what happens in Seattle.

As far as you hating Parcells’ tactics, good for you. I personally like the guy, and the way he coaches and treats his players. But gosh, if you can’t see that you turn EVERY topic into your platform for your hatred towards Parcells, then maybe those guys suggesting a check up are right about you.

Simms hating Parcells? Ha, again laughable. I live in the NY area and have personally heard him speak of his old ball coach. Here check this out:

James,

You have serious problems .. maybe I will not stop you from posting, but you will stop me. You are a head case. Like the pre-mentioned bloggers have stated .. get a check up from the head up!!

Jon, Brumsfrd, Big Jim have all said to get help. Others have gone on to say that your repeated arguement and only arguement on this blog is worrysome. YOU have a problem, and you can now have this blog! … You repeated disgust and revisiting the same “childhood” issues of your own through BP is a complete turn off. You childish name calling when someone challenges your view makes you impossible to post with. Gosh the sky turned blue and its Bill Parcells fault .. you are rediculous.

It all started with a challenge of your dumbass statement “Simms hates Parcells” which I have posted for you a few articles to help educate you. Simms “respects and appreciates” the guy!!

Phyciatry? Parcells’ methods of teaching? Well I use some methods with my daughter, and I have an excellent relationship with her. Setting rules and having consiquences gives people structure! Maybe you don’t understand this but children actually want structure. Many young football players do to, it actually helps them grow into men.

… But you go on with this blog, cause I am out of here. I will though be willing to bet that I won’t be the only one leaving on your account. The “I hate Bill” crap is boring .. and you have controlled this site with that crap .. and won’t let it up. We have all tried to move on from James .. but it seems he is too big for all of us. So you keep ranting this anti-Parcells retoric and soon enough you will be here having conversations with yourself .. (I think you already do) … In all honesty James, you scare me, so adios!

by EricR on Aug 14, 2005 9:17 PM CDT reply actions

Eric R,
It is obvious that you love the guy. You would most likely be willing to work overtime under his desk, were you his personal secretary, which I’m sure you fantasize about hourly. As I have told you before, you are the pot calling the kettle black. Hatred for Parcells? You know nothing about me, except that you cannot force me to subscribe to YOUR point of view. Therefore, as the true liberal that you are you must resort to smear tactics. Oh well, there was a small glimmer of hope for you, but that is now gone.

As a liberal you don’t like facts, but here are some more anyway. Since you are so hung up on psychology and sooooooooo smart, I am amazed that you missed the part in psychology textbooks where the APA states that in psychology nothing is provable. In other words, it is not a science as it’s methods cannot provide empirical data. They say this themselves, YOU look it up! It actually has many aspects of a religion as evidenced by the blind faith of its adherents, a perfect example of which is you and your cronies.

You posted a link to a website that would explain BP’s psychology. You stated that it was the psychology of parents, teachers, and coaches. If you would subject children to military style “tear them down to build them up” mindgames which require the authority figure to lie, change expectations, abuse emotionally and mentally etc., there is something seriously wrong with you. Would you actually practice it on children Eric R? You said this is what parents do and its OK! If so, you should not be allowed around your own children or anyone elses. It’s not so surprising to hear you say that though, the socialist dream is to have everyone (except the ELITE, like yourself) living in a concentration camp and under control.

Whether you like or not, Parcells uses his own version of the military psychology methods I spoke of. I endured that crap during my HONORABLE service because it was part of the job. However, it has no place outside military and DEFINITELY nowhere near children. If anyone practices it I will call call them on it. If it bothers you, go have a good cry with you coach, mentor, father, priest etc., BP. As for me I will give him the respect he is due AS A FOOTBALL COACH and as a football coach only. I will also waste no more of my time with you and YOUR sick mind.

James, now I “get” you. You have a similar problem to a very close friend of mine.

You are ex-military AND highly intellectual. By choosing to rebel against all things military (being told what to do, discipline, having your life Pre-structured), you are killing your ability to live up to your intellectual promise. You’re not in the military anymore, and probably don’t have to go back. So get over it!

This week will be a little different because it’s aired on ABC, but I think we should start to get things in place for games three and four – since they will only be aired in the Dallas/Houston and Dallas/Jacksonville areas.

My expereince of yesterday’s game was reading the play by play on NFL.com, and then reading people’s descriptions on the blog-flipping between screens.

Much better than being in the dark, and quite entertaining.

So, after this game let’s start collecting volunteers to post what they’re seeing for the last two.

In other subjects:

I’m really questioning myself of which Guards and Tackles throughout the league are boundary guys that might get cut… I guess that Stephen Jones and staff are making calls, well, at least that’s what I hope…

I think that now we only need to know if Crowder has something in Kick and Punt returns to get that final roster spot at WR over Merritt and everyone else.

And I think that now we know that Gurode isn’t dependable, even at Center, again making mistakes…

Wow,

I haven’t posted for a few weeks, and the way James and EricR we’re going at it, I was beginning to wonder if I’d accidentally gone to a different website!

Whew, now back to The ’Boys!

Thompson can run, and will make the team!

Crowder is a one-man wrecking crew, a faster Bill Bates, and will make the team! It wouldn’t surprise me to see him catch some deep balls on offense.

Witten is still The Man!

Henson and Romo were very encouraging!

Tucker is gone!

Vollers will be at RT! Unless we pick up a FA, or move Larry Allen there, but who plays LG? Peterman?

Henry is for real!

McBriar is starting to look like Ray Guy!

Cundiff will be fine! 53 yards is a long way. He’s consistent from 45 yards in.

I think our defense will be real good, especially after Ferguson and spears return.

Our offensive line is worrisome, especially with an immobile Bledsoe, who likes to hang on to the ball for too long, but he’ll be fine with protection. Witten will be his security blanket, much like Ben Coates was in NE.

I don’t think we should look into this game too much, because it was only the first pre-season game, and BP is more interested in evaluating individual players at this point in time. I will only worry if our offensive line plays like this in the last pre-season game.

I still think this team will strike fear in the NFL this year, and for many years to come! 10-6 is a definite possibility.

by onepaniolo on Aug 14, 2005 11:35 PM CDT reply actions

Welcomed back, paniolo.

In my book there’s only two things that worry me, the first one isn’t that much of a worry, because just like you, I consider that Vollers could do a good job. But the second one is truly a worry, those penalties, there’s just no excuse, yes, that was the first game, but a first game leavves the door open for guys like Pettiti to make mistakes, especially if he’s facing a guy like Okeafor, or Flozell facing a guy that can play against his strengths, Flozell is a mauler, but might be kind of slow footed, or Rivera leaving his assignation collect a sack, but that amount of penalties on the OLine?

Parcells! I want to hear you chewing tomorrow! If I don’t! I’ll say that you truely have become a softie with age!

by Chandus on Aug 15, 2005 12:14 AM CDT reply actions

Did anybody else find the screen shot of the game a little different? I seemed to be a wider shot than normal, including more of the field but lacking a little definition. Is this just because the cameras are so far from the field in Sun Devil stadium or a way of showing more of the game? Or was it just my imagination? Or just 2nd string preseason production crew?

Was McBriars punt that was muffed one of those Aussie backspin kicks? It looked to have a funny spin to it but I couldn’t tell for sure. Did anybody get a better look at it?

Tucker has to be gone. We can surely find a better player that gets cut by some other team deep in OL.

by Sean on Aug 15, 2005 5:28 AM CDT reply actions

About that 3rd down and 50. Damn! I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone being backed up like that. Tucker’s got some real problems, and he may not be around after this. I can live with just about everything else that went on, but the penalties are what killed us. Without them, we’re celebrating a victory.

by Rob2 on Aug 15, 2005 7:13 AM CDT reply actions

unfortunately, Tucker will not be gone anytime soon unless we pick someone up. They would love to give Pettiti more time there but until Rogers gets well enough, they can’t have Pettiti taking all the reps in practice/pre-season games. They need some bodies too. He will be cut, i feel pretty certain of that but he’ll be around a little while longer.

and hopefully, there will be no Ross Verba talk. I’ve heard the guy is a cancer.

by J-MAN on Aug 15, 2005 8:42 AM CDT reply actions

You’re right. I was talking about before the season starts. He will get cut, but not before they bring someone else in, or make other arrangements. The guy just doesn’t seem to get it.

Rob2,
you are right, he doesn’t get it. He has the tools. its just amazing to me how some athletes can just piss away their future through laziness and indifference.

by J-MAN on Aug 15, 2005 10:32 AM CDT reply actions

Drew Bledsoe was one notch above ‘dreadful.â€â"¢ I would have liked to see him a little more to get a better idea of how he was going to play, but the guy didnâ€â"¢t look sharp at all. He overthrew receivers and had the worst case of happy feet Iâ€â"¢ve seen in a long time. He did exactly what youâ€â"¢re not supposed to do as a quarterback: he sat in the pocket and patted the ball, just looking. He was sacked not only because the offensive line was unimpressive but because he couldnâ€â"¢t get the ball out of his hands. He also had problems throwing down the field, which showed when he tried a deep ball to Keyshawn down the sideline which didnâ€â"¢t come close. I had heard about this ‘happy feetâ€â"¢ problem of his before, but I never thought it would be a big deal in Dallas. Looks like it followed him.

by AW on Aug 15, 2005 12:00 PM CDT reply actions

Bledsoe look bad but so did the line. Our D didnt look good against the pass as a whole.

by AW on Aug 15, 2005 12:02 PM CDT reply actions

QBs take time to get their timing. Bledsoe will be allright. If not we roll with ROMO or we stick in the other Drew.

Who cares with Julius Jones and Tyson Thompson looking stellar, we will just RUN BABY RUN! This might shape up to be the best backfield in football if Thompson turns into a stud too.

Bill will figure out the offensive line. I think we might see LA at Tackle in the final preseason game. Gurode or Peterman at Guard……..AJ at C.

Defense is what bothers me. NO SACKS? Of course one of our high paid first round picks was not on the field. We are still learngin the defense………so it is only the first game. You know this is a preseason that really matters for the Cowboys with all the new faces and the new defense. Bill Parcells has a lot of teaching to do.

I think this team will get better each and every week. By seasons end if we can win 9 or 10 we get into the playoffs and we are still young and know what we are doing and do some damage. I think we will be allright. It is just the first preseason game.

Jon
Bledsoe looked as he has the last couple of years its not timing. That is just what he is. If that was a real game we would have gotten killed. Their first team was passing all over the place on us.

by AW on Aug 15, 2005 12:54 PM CDT reply actions

I honestly believe some of the following is true:

1. BP was looking at the 3-4 on purpose and not matching the 3 receiver sets at all (nickel). He didint really care about the D in this gam except for the 3-4 (which worked pretty well against the run, pressure was and it’s still a problem).

2. Experiments at the line with Gurode at C and Pettiti at RG. That is the reason why Bledsoe looked awful and the line was just a joke.

3. BP did not want to show many things to a rival this year.

4. BP wants to get fans back to earth…this is still a team in rebuilding mode after 5 – 6 years of some stupidity….

If none of these statements are true, and the Cowboys were really trying to win the game and not just looking at players, positions, etc…..then this season is going to be just as painfull as last one and BP should retire because he has lost the nerve to coach football…

by ManTab on Aug 15, 2005 1:20 PM CDT reply actions

good points ManTab.

AW……if it was a real game do you think Julius Jones would have touched the ball a little more? No reason to let the big dogs run with the little dogs. Leave em on the porch for when it matters, lord knows we need a healthy Julius Jones for 16 games.

I have said all along we are going to be exclusive 3 man fronts through Preseason. Then come regular season more half and half depending on the the team, the personell available injuries and such, and how well we do getting to the QB in a 3 man front or a 4. Bill Parcells is going to do whatever it takes to get more Sacks……….personally the idea of Spears, Canty, Glover, Ellis and Ware along with Ferg, Rat, and whoever else makes it rotating in a 4 man front is pretty good sounding………I think we will see some serious 4 man fronts………or Ferg and Glover in the middle on a short yardage down……..or Spears in their on a passing down…….lots of possibilities………wish Spears had stayed healthy……..ouch.

Again I think by the end of the year this team will be much improved over the beginning. A rookie ain’t a rookie after week 10 or so………he starts to end the rookie mistakes and become a little more NFL savy. I think if we can win 10, we are in, and then the real season starts. San Diego in week one and the Raiders should both let us see if our Defense is improved………LT at SD and Moss and Porter and Curry in OAK……..that is some tough defense. I want to see Bierault or Roy get a good shot on Moss. That guy has been a Cowboy killer since he came in the league.

Hey you always do stuff in Preseason that you want to work on and get the guys that need time on the field out there. I mean Irvin, Aikman and especially EMMIT did not need preseason games. Personally I would not play Mike Vick in Preseason very much if it were me. Maybe the last two games first quarter only. To get some timing, but that would be it.

I think Drew Bledsoe will be an improvement over Vinny, and a stabilizing guy at QB. Let him get the rust off, believe me he got an earful after the game. BP is hardest on his QBs. Gives us a year or two to see if Henson and Romo are for real. Personally I also said I would take a gamble on Warner……..you know the guy can chuck it…….if he has that fire back he will put up another 4000 yard campaign.

Raul………looking forward to Rafael’s CAMP NOTES………glad he was able to make it out there. Remind me ahead of time next year, and I will see if I can get some Flight VOUCHERS……………pray DELTA stays above water.

Jon,

if we don’t have the threat of a passing game, then the opposing defences will stack eight men in the box and Julius can’t juke eight guys and nobody, not even Thompson can out run eight in the box.

big jim
im deffinetely here for sure.

as ar as the o-line is concerned i think we will be fine once we get rt figured out. gragg (i think is his name) is being talked about alot. former 49er dont know much on him but on ranchreport they are saying hes better then any option we have on the team. im not concerned about bledsoe the cards were blitzing alot i rewatched the game and they were coming quite a bit. petitte might be our best option for rt this year if rogers cant. he has almost a month to learn more and get himsef ready.

by mike on Aug 15, 2005 2:25 PM CDT reply actions

i think we will have the threat of a passing game……..and I hope Thompson and Jones are both are part of it. In fact Bledsoe is a good play action QB, and that is going to be our bread and butter in the passing game.

I would not be surprised to see this team run the football 40+ times a game though. 25 to JJ, another 15 spread among Barber, Thompson, and my guess is Polite. Now we cannot do that if we give up a couple of touchdowns in the first quarter but hopefully that will not be the case. We will get better in the passing game. Hey Vinny tossed a hello of a lot of yards and I see Bledsoe as an improvement…….add in JJ for the whole year………Rivera at Guard? Witten, Glenn, and KJ healthy all year? Dan Campbell back………this team is going to be a two tight end set with a threat to run it up the gut or break it outside and JJ and TT have the speed to do just that. You ever see 8 guys in the box and then a back like TT or JJ breaks through the pile………..THAT IS 6 POINTS they will not be caught from behind!!!!

It is early no reason to panic. Personally I love a great running game, and know how much it grinds down the opponents and keeps TO, Burress and Randy Moss on the SIDELINE. Along with Ellis, Glover, Ware, and Spears getting long breaks. We were on the football field way to long on DEFENSE………and we were pass happy with JJ out. That will change.

We ain’t going to be a three back offense with no WRs or a TE that can catch.

Anyone hear the BP press conference? Someone was placed on IR but I missed the name. It was a rotator cup I think. Anyone know?

Oh! it was Pagle.

by randall on Aug 15, 2005 2:44 PM CDT reply actions

The line didn’t have a good game but Bledsoe was just like he has been. Bad and holds on to the ball too long. Bledsoe is not much of an upgrade from last year. Warner didn’t look rusty. I’m sure Warner looked better then he really is but I would take that over what Bledsoe put out there.

aw
the cards were blitzing, the o-line wasnt protecting and the wr werent getting open. go back and watch the game. just because a qb gets sacked doesnt mean hes hoilding the damn ball to long. he getting hit when he was taking his 4 step back. stop being so damn negative

by mike on Aug 15, 2005 3:01 PM CDT reply actions

Bledsoe did have his trademark happy feet, but he wasnt even able to get a three step drop before having a guy in his face. Believe me he will be fine and is an upgrade to Testerverde.

by nate on Aug 15, 2005 3:03 PM CDT reply actions

Jon,

TT is two seasons from playing JUCO and has not proven he can run between the tackles at all. JJ is poised to be the next great RB wearing the Star, but he will need more than dinks and dunks to Witten to be be as dangerous as he could possible be. I Luv my ‘boys, but I think we have to temper our optimism a little bit. I really want to see our WR’s stretch the defences and then JJ will run for 1600/20 this year. I haven’t seen that yet. No one in Dallas has seen that since 1999 when Irvin went down.

I’m not being negative I’m being real with what we have here. I’m sure he is not as bad as we saw but he is not much better then we saw either. Happy feet Bledsoe is not going to change. And I did say the line was bad but he was bad with the line when he did have the time to throw. Like I said before the bills had better WR last year so think about that.

by AW on Aug 15, 2005 3:26 PM CDT reply actions

lol we will see if im wrong i will admit it, same other ways as well.

by mike on Aug 15, 2005 3:31 PM CDT reply actions

OK, everybody, watch those knee-jerks! The O-line did look bad, but we saw many blitzes, a line that had not worked together at all, and a speed rusher over Flozell—his worst nightmare.

Things to like:

1. 3-4 was fine already. If they continue to improve….
2. Corners were looking good.
3. Witten.
4. LA was the good LA, not the bad version of a couple of years ago.
5. Some of the backups looked great and may even help special teams.
6. Our kicker & punter looked great.
7. No real injuries.

Looking forward to next week, when they may actually play it like a real game: situational defenses, a real offensive game plan, and a few guys on special teams (coverage) who belong there. And hopefully no more Ware trying to cover slot receivers on most downs.

by Remnant on Aug 15, 2005 3:33 PM CDT reply actions

Before we say Thompson is going to be a stud the guy hasnt proved he can run up the middle. If all he can do is run outside teams will easily be able to counter that. JJ is our man and will rush for IMO 1300-1600 yards this season. I know this was only the first game, but Bledsoe scares me already. One pass he threw should have been picked off. He can’t keep making 3 and outs and making our D be on the field for long periods of time. He also can’t put our offense in long situations because only Glenn can stretch the field. I hope this isn’t another year of us going into the 4th quarter with less than 10 points.

by lou on Aug 15, 2005 4:26 PM CDT reply actions

Bledsoe needs to get confidence that his O line will protect him- any QB will get happy feet if they get rushed enough. I would rather take the sacks then have INT’s like we got from Vinny and Q.

Where the heck is our morning report?

by Cash on Aug 15, 2005 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

Teams either use the run to set up the pass or the pass to set up the run- you have to do both or your O will look like something that dropped out of the north end of a south bound horse. AND if your O line is not getting the job done then nothing else matters.

by Burmafrd on Aug 15, 2005 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

With the blocking that our oline provided and the blitz packages that the Cardinals ran, I am not surprised that he had happy feet. The game plan was vanilla as expected. I did not expect to see a vanilla defense. We only gave up 13 points and their starters were in for a lot longer than ours. Do you think Tucker sees the hand writing on the wall? There were no hole inside mainly because they had 8 in the box most of the night. Run blitzes created problems for JJ because he didn’t break his runs outside like TT. Thompson will undoubtably make the team with the speed he has. I thought Crowder also made a few points for himself. BP has some difficult and some easy cuts in the near future. I thought Pepper Johnson as BP calls him look good albeit agains 2 and 3 teamers. On the whole I expected pretty much the game we got. I had hoped the o line would have worked better together. Romo and Henson both looked pretty good at times. Before I hit the panic button however I believe I will wait and see what the next few weeks bring. Looking forward to Rafael’s eyewitness accounts from camp. Keep up the good work on the Blog fellas. I enjoy reading everyones viewpoints. And thanks Raul and Rafael for the great medium for us to share our love of the Cowboys.

by Tommy on Aug 15, 2005 4:35 PM CDT reply actions

The only thing that is a problem is the OL. everything else will be worked out b4 training camp ends. the defense will be very solid & the offense will only be as good as the OL take them. the defense will keep them in games, but if saturday was any indication, we will be seeing many games where the cowboys score between 10 to 17pts a game!
my prediction is 8-8 this yr.

bp did say next preseason game against seahawks is gonna be alot more complex. he also said that petitte will see alot of playing time to, which i like to see. tucker appears to be going nowhere right now, bp said no personnal changes for the week. i would expect to see alot different offense next week.

by mike on Aug 15, 2005 5:01 PM CDT reply actions

i still say 10-6 this year with a wildcard. i do think our defense will keep us in some games. the offense is gonna be fine.

by mike on Aug 15, 2005 5:02 PM CDT reply actions

lou:

The reason I was backing Thompson the way I did with little support, comes right to the fact that we will play a lot of 2 TE sets, with Witten as a Half Back, and Campbell as a TE, you could scheme plays to Campbell side, let the TE’s and the Center, Johnson proved last year that has the speed to do it, maul the LB’s and Safeties and let Keyshawn, or Glenn who can also block, take out the corner and you have the road clear.

There’s only one thing still on the way, though, and that’s Thompson ability to protect the QB, because those types of plays won’t work if the whole Defense knows that Thompson will run to the outside.

by Chandus on Aug 15, 2005 5:13 PM CDT reply actions

I agree and have said given Curtis Martins Carries early in his career under Parcells…….expect JJ to have 25 carries a game for 400 carries and yeah 1600 yards or so.

That does not mean that Barber, Thompson, Thomas or Polite cannot have a few hundred yards themselves. Not all of em. But if Thompson turns out to be a decent backup and possibly return man and speedster. I could even see letting the kid play WR a bit. 6’ 1" 210 or so I think. Not sure on the weight. Irvin was close to that. 6 2" and around 208. Maybe he can line up at WR like Herschel and Marshal have both done succcessfully in the NFL. SPEED KILLS……….and he has some of it.

If Dallas game plans go exactly as plan. They would like to get an early lead. Play awesome run stuffing defense…………stop the pass happy recievers that burned us last year…….then RUN RUN RUN to kill the clock in the 2nd Half. If that is the Case and I think it will be in a few of our games anyway………..nothing wrong with having a few good tailback to spread the load.

We never had that luxury during Emmit Smith’s tenure. He was it. Moose occassionaly for a surprise and keep em honest, but none of his backups were anything to write home about. Imagine having a young fast guy that comes in the fourth quarter with fresh legs after the POUNDING the Offensive line and combination of Julius and whoever else. Then TT gets in their and breaks em long and just runs away from the Defense.

Julius is the real deal. But nothing wrong with having a one two punch.

Tompson is like 225 lbs.

by Cash on Aug 15, 2005 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

Yes, in the mini camps he was a 200 pounds thin running back, which was the main reason everyone was labeling him a WR, now he added a lot of weight, so he’s a RB.

by Chandus on Aug 15, 2005 11:30 PM CDT reply actions

Tommy,

I agree with your assessment of what the Cardinals were doing to stop our inside running. In addition, they were stunting their linemen on most plays. But, I didn’t see Thompson ‘break his runs outside’. Those were sweeps, called in the huddle. When Thompson ran inside, he got stuffed just as badly as Jones did. I suspect that if the Cowboys had called some of those sweeps for Jones, he might have had success with them too, because of the way the Cardinals were playing up front, and because he has some foot speed of his own. That is not to take anything away from Thomson’s great game, but he might not have been able to do all that he did against a team that played a more orthodox defense, or if he had been given the same plays to run that Jones got.

By the way, after one of the offensive series, Bledsoe went up to Parcells and said that they could play ‘catch’ with Terry Glenn all day. Parcells responded, “I know, but that’s not what I want to do.” Parcells had only one thing in mind — evaluation — and he didn’t care what the Cardinals were doing.
