Around SBN: Bill Stewart Dead From Apparent Heart Attack

Anatomy Lesson of the Day

Because we believe in an informed public here at Cowboys Blog -- and because we don't want you to sound like meatheads -- we're going to have a brief anatomy lesson. The team's site and the DMN are both using the phrase, "Billy Cundiff suffered a hip flexor..." Perhaps this is how Parcells said it at his press conference, I don't know. But know this: the hip flexors are a pair of muscles on the inside of each of our hips. You can tear one of the hip flexors. You can strain one or both of the hip flexors. But you don't suffer one.

You don't suffer a knee. You don't suffer a chest. And you don't suffer a hip flexor.

Bring on the Seahawks.

Hi Everybody.

Flag on the play – personal foul. Illegal use of an emoticon with a nut-racking reference. 15 yards.

Still 1st down.

Troll:

I introduce into evidence proof that my use of the emoticon when referencing said injury is allowable under article 3, section 12, subsection b of the Code of Men’s Humor:

3. Laughter and ridicule is expressly forbidden when referencing injury or assault to any part on the male groin; the only exception is if you have endured the same injury, which automatically instills inclusion into this brotherhood.

So there! :P

Greetings Ye old Rafael,

I’ve never consider myself a meat hear—uninformed maybe. However, you have the best Blog ever. The only thing I think can come close to your blog is seeing everything live.

I was in the military for 20 years and I tore all cans of body parts. I don’t recall suffering any damage to those parts.

Rafael you rule. None football note—how about that Tiger Woods. (okay guys, don’t beat me up) LOL

You know, a hip flexor injury results 9 times out of 10 from not stretching or having too little strength for the effort.

From past articles, Cundiff does not suffer from too little strength (Yes, Raul, you can suffer from being weak and being kneed). A dunder-head move from a mental light-weight. No wonder Bill is cutting bait rather than waiting out an injury

LOOK INTO IT, Raul.

suf·fer Audio pronunciation of “suffer” ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sfr)
v. suf·fered, suf·fer·ing, suf·fers
v. intr.

   1. To feel pain or distress; sustain loss, injury, harm, or punishment.
   2. To tolerate or endure evil, injury, pain, or death. See Synonyms at bear1.

Rank Stranger,

As your definition indicates, those are the INtransitive definitions of the verb ‘suffer’. An ‘intransitive’ verb is, by its own definition, one which has NO direct object. Used in a sentence, you might say, “Cundiff suffers because he has an injury to his hip flexor.” The definitions you listed do not apply to the transitive form of ‘suffer’ that was used in the articles mentioned.

Here are the transitive definitions for ‘suffer’ (from the online Meriam-Webster):

1 a : to submit to or be forced to endure ; b : to feel keenly : labor under ; 2 : UNDERGO , EXPERIENCE ; 3 : to put up with especially as inevitable or unavoidable; 4 : to allow especially by reason of indifference ; 1 : to endure death, pain, or distress; 2 : to sustain loss or damage; 3 : to be subject to disability or handicap.

Obviously, none of these definitions fit the usage. You don’t ‘endure’ or ‘labor under’ or ‘undergo’ or ‘put up with’ or ‘allow’ a hip flexor, any more than you would a ligament or gall bladder.

Ummmmm???

" 1. To feel pain or distress; sustain loss, injury, harm, or punishment."

???

READ much? hmmmm “sustain loss, injury” I can’t see how it GETS any clearer than that!

by Rank Stranger on Aug 24, 2005 3:09 PM CDT reply actions

Rank Stranger,

Once again, for those who failed elementary English.

Your definition is strictly for INTRANSITIVE usages of the verb ‘suffer’. In other words, in a sentence WITHOUT a direct object.

In the sentence, “Billy Cundiff suffered a hip flexor”, the verb ‘suffered’ is TRANSITIVE, because it is immediately followed by the direct object ‘hip flexor’.

Therefore, your definition, while eminently interesting, is neither applicable, nor relevant.

Your definition would apply to the INTRANSITIVE sentence, “Billy Cundiff is suffering, because he has an injury to his hip flexor.”

Note also, that if the original sentence had been written, “Billy Cundiff suffered an injury to his hip flexor,” that would have been correct. Although, your definition would still not apply — TRANSITIVE sentence, INTRANSITIVE definition.
