Pricing Receiver Depth
As the final cutdown approaches, the possiblity of Peerless Price landing in Dallas appeared to be a guardedly optimistic one. Price spent the late moments of last night's game with Jacksonville in Jerry Jones' box. Price will undergo a physical today and he and his agent will meet with team officials to discuss contract parameters. Jerry Jones refused to hint at Price's status last night, terming any speculation "premature."
Price met with the Dolphins earlier Thursday. Had he stayed to watch the Fish play his old team the Falcons, the Cowboys chances may have diminished; Miami is unsettled at QB, with one local paper calling for third stringer Sage Rosenfelds to become the starter, based on his performance last night. Price is leaving Atlanta because he could never get in sync with Michael Vick. I find it hard to believe he would jump to another mismatched passing game.
Price's agent, Tim McGee said Price, "loved" his visit with the Pats on Wednesday, but offered the vague answer that "we hope to get something done by this weekend." McGee neglected to say with which team.
We are likely to find out in the next 48 hours.

Dunno. Price scares me. The eye, the recent poor numbers, the fact that he’d knock a younger guy with potential off the team, the fact that he’d steal minutes from those potentially up-and-coming young receivers…. (Raf, thanks for the new thread.)

Yeah, hmm…
lets see miami, pats, or Big D,
I could see him as a patriot, not as a dolphin, but I’m sure he’d love to be catching balls from drew again which is why he dialed him up as soon as he was released by the falcons….
pats or us I say…
depending on money and such, but I don’t hte pats will spend big bucks on him either…
I’ll bet he comes to us…

I really hope he signs here. He’ll get more opportunities to show his stuff for a big contract.
NE doesn’t have the cap room to offer a long-term deal…but they do offer the best chance at a ring…awfully enticing.
Don’t think we should offer a monster deal, but it could be a 3-year deal that’s really a one-year thing with options for more, or more likely a long-term deal reworking.

One area I noticed throughout pre-season(and especially last night) that really needs work is our special teams coverage units.

Among the things the boys do well is negotiate with agents. Jones will either push to get it done right away – ie. tonight – if there is mutual interest and the numbers are close between the agent and the team, or we’ll not pursue him. I admire Jones for being aggressive that way in his negotiations with free agents.

Don’t know if it was you, Remnant, but a ton of people (mediots included) really dogged us for not taking a WR in the draft or in FA. The vast majority of opinion is that we’ve got two old, slow receivers and no real depth. Now we don’t want to get the best FA WR available?
I don’t care who it is, or at what position. If we can get someone that is better than what we got, get ‘em. Crayton is either better, or he’s not. Talent doesn’t need practice.
by Fighter15 on Sep 2, 2005 11:05 AM CDT reply actions
As far as the statements Price’s agent keeps making,I’m sure he’s just trying to elevate his clients worth prior to negotiating, after all that is his job to maximize the players contract.Very common and savy move.

Sorry to change the subject, but is anybody out there concerned about A Thomas as a back-up runinng back? I know he’s played well in pre-season, especially last night, but that 3+ yds/carry avg the last two years bothers me. I guess we’ll be keeping all 4 running backs since I can’t imagine we’d cut Barber.
Regarding Price, KJ, TG, PC, Price and anybody else makes for a great receiving corps.
Definitely agree special teams (coverage / kicking) need work. Anybody have any thoughts on what kickers are out there?

i"m worried about Brees, LT and Darren Sproles next week. Those are some formidable weapons.
I’m kind of hoping Ware doesn’t start. He could prove to be a huge liability vs the run.
Clearly, the strength of the D is their front four – Ellis, Glover, Ferguson, Canty/Spears/whoever. I hope there’s a steady dose of the 4-3 next sunday, with the 3-4 thrown in intermittently.

now i just dont see where this puts crayton cuz he rightfully got the thrid spot, and i think he needs to play cuz he just has way too much ptential and room to grow right now.. i love price i think we should sign him.. but my main concern is with bledsoe and johnsons timing.. i mean he has caught two passes this pre season. thats not what i want out of my possession WR, and glenn is our deep threat.. i dunno i think we might have to move on with the new and possibly get rid of some of the old.. let crayton (26) and price (28) come and be the guys, and have glenn or johnson be the number one.. heres how i see it.. glenn oir johnson in the number one spot, and then we have price as a number two (cuz after all thats what he doest best.. the man had his best seasons as a number two not a number one.) and then crayton on number three so he can still get in there alot. and then possibly see what you can get from one of the other Vets. (keyshawn or Terry) possibly in a trade or something. but i do say we should keep one around.

Fighter15,
Not me. Never said we should take a WR in the draft, since our other needs were much more imminent. What I am saying now is that WRs usually take 2-3 seasons to develop; very few are good their 1st year. Talent at WR does take practice. We already know what Price is: an ok 2nd or 3rd receiver. With eye problems.
We don’t know what Copper, Crayton, or Crowder are yet. I do not want to lose our chances to 1) keep them on the roster as they develop and 2) get at least one of them some playing time.
I doubt any of them will be anything remotely special, but I’d rather take a flyer on them in the hopes that they’ll be solid next year. I doubt BP can think much past this season, though, so they’ll probably sign Price if his health and cost are right.

Talent need to play. I like at Crayton as like Wards or Mason. Players get better as they play not sitting down and doing nothing. As long as Crayton gets enough playing time I’m all for it. Two years down the road Crayton is the most likely to be here doing something if he keeps getting better. A lot of people are talking about the story of TT which is a good and can become a great one. But lets look at Crayton story not drafted, put on PS last year and now is the #3 and is getting better. Crayton is the future but to get to that he needs to play now.

Since we’re getting close to Sunday’s cut here’s my list (with some surprises and wishful thinking):
Starting 30 (BP math):
Offense: Drew, Julius, Polite, Keyshawn, Terry, Witten, Campbell, Flozell, LA, Johnson, Rivera, Pettiti, Gurode, Thompson (what a great story…see Spags article), PRICE
Defense: Ellis, Glover, Ferguson, Spears, Coleman, Canty, Dat, Bradie James, Ware, Henry, Glenn, Newman, Williams, Davis, FA OLB
Special Teamers: Acme Kicker Co., Thunderfoot (and lightning)
Draft Picks (future): Ratliff, Barber, Burnett, Peterman, Thomas Johnston
IR: Beriault
That’s 37. Other locks include Crayton (4th WR), Reeves (4th CB), Vollers (OT), Romo, and Henson, Pierce (3rd TE), Shanle.
That’s 44. Here’s where it gets fun.
- Anthony Thomas makes it because he’s the only veteran RB
- Coady for the same reason at safety (or some other veteran off the waiver wire)
- 3 from Singleton/Thornton/Ogbogu/Fowler/O’Neil
- Either Bruce Thornton or Nate Jones
That’s 50, I think.
The last three have to be young with a lot of upside, or starter veteran FAs, but really, who cares.
If you add Jeff Robinson, you’ve only got two to play with. But they’re insignificant and fluid positions.
That’s two FA signings to go (OLB and Price), with a wishful signing of a veteran RT (I’m cheering for Verba).
That leaves one. Who gets it?

You are so right.
One of the old guys need to go and we still need to draft a stud WR next year. I think Crayton will turn into a good #2. Nobody we have is a #1 and Price is no #1.
by AW on Sep 2, 2005 12:03 PM CDT reply actions
Why wait for Copper, Crayton or Crowder to develop? Develop into what? a really terrific gunner on punts? A solid #3 WR? So what? Hopefully, ideally, any one of them will develop into what peerless price IS. They’ll be roughly Price’s age when they mature into a fully rounded football player, so… why not just take a mature, complete ball player and be done with experiments? Isn’t it better to have coaches concentrated on game plans and plays, rather than, “Here Copper, you hold your hands like this to catch a crossing pattern. Let’s practice this till you get it right.”
When it comes to roster spots, it’s not a time to be wistful and cross your fingers you’ve got a feel-good story on your hands.
Also, nothing is owed to Crayton, a WR I really like. If Price is better, then Price is better. I don’t even konw what discussion there is to be had. Anyway, if we land Price, what a fantastic dilemma to have – loaded at RB and WR.
by Joey2zs on Sep 2, 2005 12:05 PM CDT reply actions
Fighter, the answer is a 5th WR – special teams guy. Crowder or Copper.

First of all Copper and Crowder are not on the same level as Crayton right now. The only way to put up numbers is to play. We don’t know what Crayton can turn into but we do know that Price is. Bledsoe is not the same guy he was when Price put up that big season. Price is at best a #2.

There is one other major benefit to req. reg.
About three weeks ago we were infested by photo ads from a porn site that were being deposited in the threads. If you required I.D.s this is not such a risk. We stamped it out but it could recur. I have a friend who shut down the comments on his blog because the porn/gaming/pharma ads in this threads got too much to handle.
If we shut down our threads, we die.

I have been a Cowboys fan for over twenty years and I hope to see a great year from them. I’m really excited after that show they put on last night. But I have to admit, I want the New Orleans Saints to do good this year. I hope they can become the Rocky, Rudi Rudiger of this season. I know that the NFL will back them up and give them good support. I’m sick and tired of the “feel good” Patriots. New England/Boston is one of the ruddest places I’ve ever visited.

Go with the registration. It keeps out much of the trash, and eliminates the ‘impersonation’ posts. It also gives you a ‘stick’ if someone gets too rowdy.
I never mind registering to post. It is only when I have to do so to read that it becomes tedious.
Just don’t expect me to tell the truth on the registration form. :)

Are we going to start registering because Sean is whining? Or will it be for the benefit of all of us here?
by James on Sep 2, 2005 2:30 PM CDT reply actions
Hey James-What do you like about this blog? I’m sure it’s not scrolling thru 10-15 entries of someone being an imposter of the regular posters insulting the other regulars. I can be as crude and crass as the next person (I learned a lot while in the Navy) and nothing I’ve seen here has offended me but I don’t frequent this sight to see what creative insults someone can come up with.
I come to this site to 1) get Rafael’s and other’s insight into the Cowboys and other related topics 2) use all the eyes and ears of the Cowboys fans to get the cutting edge info 3) listen to the thoughtful dialog of opposing points of view, the passionate back and forth is fun as well.
If this site is to succeed, which I certainly hope it does, it won’t grow readers if it is just garbage and it won’t find sponsors other than the porn, pharma, etc. without respectable content.
I also believe you probably just read my comments left on one of the previous threads and not the offending ones removed by Raul. It was only my intent to bring it the attention of the blog moderators who could have left the insults on if they wanted. Hey, its their house, I just like help keep it clean while I visit. I’m sorry you perceive that as whining.
by Sean on Sep 2, 2005 2:51 PM CDT reply actions
Sean,
You have given me the answers I was looking for. I am glad to see that you approve of the passionate back and forth. I want to see that continued as well, even if it might ruffle the occasional feather. (I’ve ruffled a few and had mine ruffled as well) True enough that the impostors and porn, gambling ads, et al are a pain in our keesters. What I don’t want to see happen is posters excluded because someone does not like their point of view. Without your elaboration, it seemed possible that you were promoting membership based on popularity.

by Ron Hicks on Sep 2, 2005 8:48 PM CDT reply actions
yah he turned it down, but that doesnt mean we arent gonna get him. i know itll hurt craytons development but i worry about injury. if glenn goes dwn then are 3rd is copper. i dont think we can win with copper as a 3rd. but imagine having kj, glenn, crayton, and price in a 4 wr set? throw in whitten in there and thats 5 damn good receivers. not many teams can say they have 5 receivers that are that good. bledsoe would have a hay day with that. im not saying price is a savior, but our defense is gonna be fine now any addition to help the offense and add much needed depth at wr im all for it.

i did read where they said ellis looked like he was playing the olb on a particular play, i think on 1 where he had a sack
by mike on Sep 2, 2005 9:34 PM CDT reply actions
Ron Hicks,
I think that headline was slightly misleading. True, his agent didn’t jump at our offer, and Price will now be visiting New Orleans, but, as mike said, that hardly takes us out of the running.
We really don’t know what Price desires, as regards to his role with a new team. Parcells told him that he would have to make his own role with this team. If that is just fine with him, or he is just dying to be reunited with Bledsoe, we still have a good shot. However, if Price would rather have a more defined role that would place him higher on the depth chart (something I argued in an earlier post), he might prefer to go elsewhere.
Length of contract, with the signing bonus that goes with it, could be another factor in his decision. Parcells noted that Price wants to go someplace where he can settle down for 4 or 5 years. To me, that would infer a contract of equal length and a corresponding bonus. That might not be in OUR plans.
mike,
If we don’t sign Price, I think Morgan sticks with the team, which means that Morgan would become our #3 receiver (not Copper), if Glenn (or Johnson) suffers an injury. And, I think that is exactly why (and the only reason why) Morgan makes the final roster.

Can somebody please tell me how to be cool like all of you dorks?
by The Seahawk Fan on Sep 2, 2005 11:25 PM CDT reply actions
Ellis was NOT playing linebacker when he got his sack.
The play was 3rd-and-4 at the Jacksonville 10. The Cowboys were in their nickel (4-2) defense, with the defensive linemen being (left to right): Ellis, Canty, Glover, and Ware. The linebackers (also left to right) were Nguyen and Shanle. Ellis had his hand on the ground at the snap, as did the other 3 linemen.
Shanle and Nguyen both blitzed towards our right, with Shanle timing the snap nicely to the right of Glover, but he was picked up by their left guard. However, Glover beat their center and escaped up the middle. Nguyen then came through untouched. This forced the QB out to our left. It looked like Ellis was playing contain to our left, watching for the rollout or escape that way, which is exactly what happened. Ellis tracked the QB down and put him on the turf.
Spagnola did make some ridiculous comment about Ellis wanting to prove that he could play as a standup linebacker, and didn’t want to put his hand down any more, but that is not remotely close to what actually occurred. Not on that play.
Eric R will just have to wait for his props.
