We're Not the Only Ones Who Think Joe Theismann and Paul McGuire are Insufferable...
The inimatable Dr. Z in this week's CNNSI column:
Papers are running fan polls as to what punishment to mete out to [Brian] Billick's Bad Boys. Flogging is popular. So is time in the stocks. I sent one in-force them to listen to 12 hours, nonstop, of ESPN Sunday night telecasts. It was rejected as too cruel.

Hey guys dont know if you remember or not but last week I said “look for the Cowboys to beat the Eagles and the Giants in the next couple of weeks”. Look back if you will, but just let me say it one more time never and I mean never EVER forget the Bill Parcells factor!!!!!
Awww hes bringing in another over the hill Qb Parcells sucks thats all I heard all offseason. You people need to trust and respect the guy, I would take him over any coach in history, its just too bad he wont be our coach forever!!!!!!!!!

the only thing worse than 12 hours of these idiots would be adding sean salisbury to the mix. seriously, how can this 2 nimrods be retained, season after season? i would rather hear eric dickerson and leslie viscer (sp?) over them.

Hey, jakey, don’t generalize, there were people that believed that his lack of success in Buffalo in the past 2 years was more on their line than in him losing his touch.

Regarding Joe Theismann,
The man is a horses ass from the word go.
I will let Joe himself talk about his Education with this
quote:
“The word "genius” isn’t applicable in football. A
genius is a guy like Norman Einstein." -
—Joe Theisman, NFL football quarterback & sports analyst.
There you have it !
Another college education wasted on an idiot !
It`s a good thing he played football.

why does Theisman look like he’s on crack everytime i see him on espn?don’t they make reporters take drug tests?
by Remnamt on Oct 12, 2005 1:49 PM CDT reply actions
The man doesn`t have the brains God gave geese.
For some reason these networks think it`s better to have on an ex`player
rather than someone who is educated & knowledgeable abouth football.
I did years ago watch, now I just tune in at kickoff !

Remnant:
I don’t use the announcer’s given name. I simply call him … Peg Leg or Tent Peg.
Which segways into your answer – he looks like he’s on crack because, well, it reminds him of his injury…

Thanks, Raul, but that post is some child signing in as “Remnamt” (note the 2nd m). I may think Joe’s lame as an announcer, but I wouldn’t go around telling others they “blow.”
Still, that drop on BaD Radio of him saying “struggling” is pure gold. Not to mention him sounding drunk and hitting on Leslie Visser. How exactly is he still broadcasting?

Remnant,
I think your getting Joe theisman mixed up with Joe Namath, Theisman is hard to take sometimes, I’ll give you that, but Joe Namath was the Guy who was drunk on the sideline saying “Struggling” and hitting on SUZY KOLBER, saying I want to kiss you.
To tell you the truth, I wouldn’t mind kissing Suzy either, among other things..

I like watching the Cowboy games and listening to radio play-by-play guys. However, I have Dish Network now, and whenever I listen to the radio and watch the game on TV, the radio is 5-10 seconds ahead of the TV. Brad Sham has finished calling the play on the radio but they havenâ€â"¢t even broken the huddle on TV.
Does anyone know of anything I can do to fix that? Is there something I can buy for my radio so it and the TV will ‘sync upâ€â"¢? Anyone, anyone……

There’s some company that sells a device that will delay the radio broadcast so that it will synch up with the TV broadcast.

Yea, these guys are like most guys in most professions. They get old and bored and fat and forget their passion and stop working and just start feeding off other people’s work. (I’m 35 and don’t ever want that to happen to me!) Who here has read a single nat’l article on ther Cowboys without reading “aging and immobile” in front of Beldsoe’s name?
Is there anyone who covers the NFL that still does the work anymore? Sometimes I like Len Pasquerelli okay at ESPN. What do y’all think?

That guy who is trying to insult you is some loser troll here to waste his time.
A lot of people thought the Cowboys were going to be 10-6 or better so I don’t think you are alone in your confidence.
I think Raph is a little better than ‘alright’. His insight is as detailed as you would find in an NFL scouting report.
How would anyone know you are from Canada? Why would they care?
Take it easy. Tell us why you think they will win against the giants in some detail. What matchups do you think they will exploit? Which defense do you think they will stick with?
Details are the difference between blind Homerism and good comments on this blog.

Raf,
Painful!! I actually turn ESPN Sunday Night Football on …. to put me to sleep. .. ESPN as a whole has become my stop for watching poker, a far cry from what it used to be. When are they going to get it? They have to change something about their format for telivised football .. because it is really boring listening to these guys. If I were them I would use the rest of their season as an experiment to get new blood in there, before they host Monday Night Football next year. There are a couple of good young baseball radio announcers that I think could do the job. But jeez when its this bad and everyone knows it … change is expected!! … I can’t do an entire season of this for Monday Night Football. Even MNF isn’t what it used to be, but it still isn’t this bad.

FYI you guys, dallas hosts St. Louis on a Sunday night (last regular season game) so you may want to make plans to avoid the commentary. Speaking of Dr. Z…did you guys see the new SI power rankings…they gave Dallas a pretty generous rank…but after all…power rankings are garbage.
by emrdog on Oct 12, 2005 7:17 PM CDT reply actions
I’m cool with the low power-rank stuff the Cowboys are getting. I want us to stay below the radar well on through the playoffs.
I don’t want any of our guys featured on Fox sports before the game, and God forbid we get an SI cover! It just creates hype, distracts the team, and worse of all, puts a huge spot light on us for the rest of the league to see.
I want our opponents thinking of the Cowboys as “still rebuilding” and “over-achieving” (even though that might be the case).
It’ll be harder to maintain that below the radar image for too long, espacially if they continue to improve, but really guys- the element of surprise works well in our favor. Leave the high power-rankings and the headlines to teams like Phily, NE, and the previously unbeaten ’skins!
They can give us a magazine cover AFTER we win the Superbowl. :)

My recommendation for Sunday Night Football………..Michael Irvin, Stuart Scott, and Chris Berman…………get out of the studio and back in the booth fellas……….yall would be a hech of a lot better than Joe, Paul and whats his name……….the only thing worse than those three is Dan Diarreha of the Mouth Dierdorf who cannot shut up about any play or action of insignifigance.
Troy like on the field………..rules in the booth. No surprise…….i also like Phil Simms in the booth, and Pat and John back in the day when Pat was probably on the sauce………….
I used to kid my Pittsburgh Steeler fans about Terry Bradshaw selling out, but he is the funniest dude in football. He also knows a thing or two, he was the first commentator I heard say…………back in 1991……….watch out for that young Dallas Cowboy team………..everybody else still had them in rebuilding mode……….but Terry will stick his foot in his mouth just as often…….at least he admits when he is wrong……..he basically apologized to Joe Gibbs after calling him on Brunell as a starter. I respect any commentator who admits when he or she is wrong. Too many of these guys egos are bigger than TO, Randy Moss, and Shannon Sharpe combined………..I say they are all about due for a Marv Albert back to earth hanky panky in the hotel episode that puts Joe Thiesman and Skip Bayless on Mars for the first space football game………send em now……….game is in 2105………..

best Joe Theisman story is the one about his injury. he gets nailed and this leg cracks horribly and obviously on national TV. laying on the ground as they bring out the stretcher he shouts “I’ll be back.”
Lawrence Taylor (standing over him) says “Not tonight you won’t.”
if only they had just carted him on out of the stadium and permanently out of football…

hey guys I think we may have found are identity go out in the first half and early in the third and be very agressive. We have an explosive O and if we can come out and jump on teams quick and get a lead and then about half way through the third we go to a ball control work the clock type of offense. If we can get out fast on our opponents that will allow are young D to go out and play and show there talent and not have to think to much because by getting out fast we make the others teams O one dimentional. I can see it now are young talented D line pinniing there ears back and going after the QB. I know it doesnt always work that way but that should be are approach to start games and make are adjustments off that. As long as we dont hurt ourselves by turnovers and penalties we should be able to take advantage of other teams because for the first time in a long time are O can put up some points! What do we have to lose the conservitive approach sure doesnt seem to work. What do you guys think?

someone should have brought up how bad these 2 numbskulls are a long time ago…! i cant stand to hear these two on sunday nights because of their negativity and cynicism…they’re morons! mike patrick (i think that’s his name) is damn good and could be one one of the best play-by-players on tv…but theisman and mcguire have no business being in a booth on national tv…i find myself questioning everything they say, which makes me feel as cynical as them…we should take our complaints national and get these douchbags back on their couch where they belong

I cannot understand why most of the Tv sports
Commentators are older than the Grand canyon.
Nothing against age but its time for a change. Most
fans today have access to more information and
have higher expectations for their announcers.Instead
we are fed a steady diet of ancient announcers whose
main qualification seems to be that they have done it before.
What is interesting is there are no women and only one african
american ANNOUNCER among the nfl commentators sorry i
don’t count the sideline “reporters”.Personally i could care less
who announces just as long as they have a clue what they are
talking about.I am so sick of the fluff pieces about some guys
pet gorilla or pushing an escalade around especially while the
game is on.

Who cares about the commentators, you guys act as if there is nothing else to talk about. Save that garbage for another blog that has nothing to talk about. You guys sound like a bunch of whiners and last time I checked this was a cowboy blog not a 49er whiner blog. Now there is alot of exciting things to talk about that deal directly with our boys why waste are time on something as stupid as who is calling games and what is said. Are Offense and defense are starting to play together as a team and all everybody wants to do is B/*>CH about the commentators. Get over it already!! GO BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Leo on Oct 12, 2005 11:16 PM CDT reply actions
Leo you might want to check the other listings on the site and you will find plenty of commentary about our Boys. Since when has making fun of Joe Thiesman been whining? I hate that dweeb, and hate it more when he says something stupid like this kid can develop but he needs to do this or that………..last time I checked Thiesman had a dominating line, the best cornerback to ever play the game, a HOF Running back, a dominant defensive line………and he still threw INTs for TDs to the DA RAIDERS. He sucked on the field, and off it………Hopefully the new CEO at DISNEY will listen to a game and can the whole lot of em!!!

by EricR on Oct 13, 2005 1:30 AM CDT reply actions
Jon,
On subject .. I think Berman’s thing is in the studio. I don’t get all into his baseball commentary, and doubt his football commentary is much better. Highlights and nicknames .. stick to it, he is good at it. … I think Ron Jaworski is pretty good at breaking down offenses, which I always find entertaining. Jaworski and Daryl Johnson wouldn’t be a bad pair, although I know of some pretty damn good color guys that do baseball radio that deserve a shot too. Heck if they can bring a baseball game to life with no pictures, its worth a try. Right now, even on the other channels, if your team isn’t the Game of the Week then the announcing is pretty bad. Like I said, there are some baseball radio guys who deserve a shot. Can’t be any worse than what is there now.

Hi Everybody!
Alright, Oiler Troll has a fun Joe Thiesman story.
Oiler Troll’s high school basketball coach, a guy named Tom McGraw, played both basketball and baseball for Notre Dame at the same time as Theisman’s tenure there. Theisman was also on the baseball team.
In a pre-season tournament somewhere in Tennessee, the Notre Dame baseball team carried several players, JV and Varsity travelling together, that sort of thing, so there were some jersey number redundancies. Theisman was already famous enough at this point to have a following, but his actual face was not as well known as it is today.
McGraw wound up wearing Theisman’s number on one of the tournament days. So some fan checked the number to the program, thought he was looking at Theisman, and asked for an autograph. McGraw, for kicks, signed the baseball…as Joe Thiesman…with his left hand… (Theisman is right-handed, yes). Nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd, so soon others also sought autographs of whom they thought was Joe Thiesman.
So, somewhere in the world dispersed from Tennessee in the 1970s are a whole bunch of fradulently autographed “Joe Theisman” baseballs.
How ’bout that? Way to go, Tom.
OT

And Jon, to add to what you are saying – NFL Matchup with Hoge and Jaworski where they actually break down tape, are the only shows that leave you with the feeling that you actually learned something (not unlike this site).

a couple of notes:
1. why do so many TV announcers call games like its radio? “they break the huddle and come up the line, single back behind the QB.” uh, thanks but we can SEE that.
2. I agree with the ancient announcer thing. where’s the fresh blood? new voices? I loved Pat Summerall and think he is easily among the best of all time. they used him way past his time, even past his ability to recognize what was going on out there or be coherent.
3. Theismann is awful. his hatred of the Cowboys (which he admits) make him even worse. no injury story or otherwise are off limits for me. when I heard he made the MNF team for next year I resolved to watch with the sound turned down.

I actually like the ESPN Sunday night crew. It’s like a fun train wreck. Sure, McGuire and Theisman are frequently wrong or vapid or shrill or obvious… but they’re entertaining. I like it. i just giggle and think, “oh, those knuckleheads.”
I hate Berman’s baseball coverage, jeeeeesh, it’s painful to listen to. It’s so uncomfortable and forced.
Tim McCarver makes me want to kill with my bare hands.
Bill Walton makes me want to poke sharpened pencils into my ears.

Joey 2zs,
Regarding Walton, I heard the most terrifying thing the other day. I was watching some highlights on the Fox Soccer Channel of international qualifiers for the World Cup. A clip from a Romania vs. somebody match comes on and the announcer begins, “how do you spell success for Romania. It’s…..” I swear, the guy was using the same inflections and tone as Walton. I had to replay the section a couple of times to make sure it WASN"T him.
That’s right. There’s a soccer announcer somewhere in Europe who has patterned his delivery after Walton.
The apocalypse really may be upon us.

I couldn’t agree more… I can handle Thiesman… he’s not the brightest, but I still have respect for him. McGuire is just an arogant idiot. He hates the fact that Thiesman was the last to be in the lime-light. Not that McGuire wasn’t a good football player, but I’d say several thousands of more fans know Joe much better than Mcguire. Jelously is a b-i-t-c-h! Have Mcguire move to another booth. Keep Joe and Mcguire apart. That’s my 2 cents… oh yeah… p.s. Mike is Great… I enjoy his comments.
