Priced Out -- Dallas Drops Peerless

The Cowboys released WR Peerless Price today, ending his brief and rather anonymous Cowboys career.

Price was signed early in the season after being released by Atlanta. He was inactive for many early games but it was thought he might flourish after third WR Patrick Crayton was injured in the first Giants game.

Price disappointed, displaying a game that was a lesser version for former Cowboys Joey Galloway's; though Price and Crayton had similar yards-per-reception averages (Price averaged 16.0 yards while Crayton averages 15.1) Price's repertoire seemed limited to deep patters and sideline routes. Dallas clearly missed Crayton's ability to work the middle of the field.

The transaction shows that Crayton is fully recovered from his nasty sprain.

who fills the roster spot?

by Jarhead on Dec 3, 2005 1:32 PM CST reply actions

I think this move is because of issues BP has with depth on the O-Line. This is less about who will fill the roster spot (for this game at least) and more about who will be active for the game. I think it was pretty clear that Crayton was going to be the guy after reports of his practices this week, but I think BP wants to be able to play newly signed Barrow along with backup O-Linemen like Colombo, Peterman, Gurode, AND somebody else just in case. That might be Price or Proctor. Of course, if Al Johnson is fine and can play a majority of the snaps throughout the game, then O-Line depth will not be an issue.

David,
I think you’re right about this game, but BP must be thinking beyond this. They may also be thinking that copper can fill in as a WR if someone goes down now.
I heard they worked out jamar martin, i wonder if they sign him.

Go Navy.

by Foos on Dec 3, 2005 2:56 PM CST reply actions

Go navy? if you’re a horns fan, its all TX. 70-3 late.

by Jarhead on Dec 3, 2005 2:58 PM CST reply actions

oh at least this means Crayton is back!
And does it also mean Copper is getting better or are we making room for another receiver later (or after the season)?

by Foos on Dec 3, 2005 2:59 PM CST reply actions

I am a Texas fan, but even more of a Navy fan (my dad went there). So I love Roger Staubach haha.

by Foos on Dec 3, 2005 2:59 PM CST reply actions

I guess Crayton is healthy again but I hope he doesnt reinjure the ankle. Then we’re done. I hope BP signs a player that can help us, not another lineman that will sit there on the inactive list.

by Lou on Dec 3, 2005 3:29 PM CST reply actions

Fortunately, I don’t think the type of ankle injury Crayton suffered is one that is likely to be recurring. And you’re right about Copper, Jarhead. I remember seeing him more in games on offense as of late, which is probably a good sign. Remember last year when all we had for backups were Copper and Crayton and how worried we were? Now we’re happy to be getting one back, and the other is better than Price. Oh boy, its goin to be a good game

by David-CT on Dec 3, 2005 4:22 PM CST reply actions

Acording to DMN, Henry did not make the flight to NY and will miss another game.

by Jarhead on Dec 3, 2005 6:28 PM CST reply actions

That is about the worse news I’ve heard all season (Henry)

by ManTab on Dec 3, 2005 6:48 PM CST reply actions

it sucks, but like BP says, “what are you going to do? They still play the games.”

I think he is looking at his doghouse and seeing henry. JJ cant be happy either after forking over 10mil.

Look back at that zona game. the boys are in command and zona has flat out QUIT. henry has already run back a pick for 6. Late in the 4th and henry, trying to make a play, goes down. here’s my point:
why is he in the game?

by Jarhead on Dec 3, 2005 6:52 PM CST reply actions

there were other 21 players on the field and none got hurt…this defense needs all the playing time they can get to see if finally they cant stop a team at the end ‘(which they failed to do against denver agaian)….It is frustrating (specially cause Glenn sucks) but it’s an injury, that;s no one’s fault

by ManTab on Dec 3, 2005 6:59 PM CST reply actions

I’m a bit confused about cutting Price.

Don’t we still need him as insurance? There is still over 25% of the season left to play, plus playoffs. What did we gain?

by Madcowboy on Dec 3, 2005 7:05 PM CST reply actions

I don’t think Glenn sucks. I think he’s pretty solid, but he is no Henry.

by Madcowboy on Dec 3, 2005 7:06 PM CST reply actions

Gentelemen, calm down. There is no reason to panic. Look what the Boys have accomplished thus far. Let’s rally around our team and our players. We have who we have. Injuries are a great part of pro sports. We are 7-4 and playing the game of the year. I to am sitting on pins and niddles, but, I know the Boys will previal with the players that BP put on the field.

by DarrellW on Dec 3, 2005 7:47 PM CST reply actions

Glenn doesnt suck by a long shot and J Reeves has done a respectable job in the nickle. henry needs to get back however, and I maintain that you sit your starters when you’re up 34-10 late in a game.

if we get pressure early and often and stop the run game tomorrow, henry will not be as missed. we’ll see.

by Jarhead on Dec 3, 2005 8:17 PM CST reply actions

DarrellW:
I am calm.
The release of Ben Noll’s mid-week also was surprising, but Marcus Price and Marc Columbo must have regained conditioning. Columbo has gained ~20 pounds since joining the Cowboys. Parcells said Columbo could do weight training with his legs now, for the first time in years. Marcus Price may have lost some weight.
Tony Romo said in his radio interview from New Jersey that Al Johnson had practiced OK. Snow is forecast for tonight and tomorrow, and Bledsoe wins in snowstorms.

by Lee on Dec 3, 2005 8:26 PM CST reply actions

The release of Price is still a bit surprising. You can’t go into the last quarter of a season w/ only 4 WR’s on your roster can you? I know Price under performed when he had a chance, but it’s still risky.

by Dave on Dec 3, 2005 8:58 PM CST reply actions

Madcowboy and Dave,

You are correct about there still being a need for a replacement WR if one of our top-3 goes down with 5 games plus post-season still to go. I suspect they think that Copper can do the job just as well. While many might think this is farfetched, I noticed that Copper was taking some reps from Price in the last few games.

As for going with just 4 receivers, they only dress 4 for the games anyway, and they have two WRs on the practice squad — Jamaica Rector and J.R. Tolver. One of those two could be activated to replenish after an injury. No time would be lost in getting him up to speed with our system. I have heard that Rector has been doing well in the practice sessions.

Jarhead-What is your secondary lineup when we get up by 24 points? I’d like to see how you cover the field without using Glenn, Henry or Newman.

by Sean on Dec 3, 2005 10:18 PM CST reply actions

Whoever said Glenn sucks is crazy as hell. Have you watched any Cowboys games? He isn’t as good as Henry, but Henry is a great CB.

by Lou on Dec 3, 2005 10:38 PM CST reply actions

Mr. Bill,

I still don’t see the upside of cutting Price. Why cut him? We still have to pay him.

I know Price wasn’t doing much, but isn’t he worth a practice squad spot? I’m still confused.

by Madcowboy on Dec 4, 2005 1:19 AM CST reply actions

if im up by 24, im playing j reeves and n jones if he is active. you could also go with your base 3-4 with glenn and reeves, leaving newman and henry off the field.
im also playing romo and other backups on O.

if i remember correctly, there were less than 5 minutes in the game when the injury occurred. one starter, singleton, had already gone down with an injury at that point.

check this out…you wont believe it but……….
————————————————————————————————————————
Every head coach in the NFL (almost) can be traced back to three men! Parcells, Walsh, and Schottemheimer! Check it out.

Parcells – Belichek – Coughlin – Crennell

Belicheck – Saban – browns 91-94.

Coughlin – Capers 99-00

Parcells got Nolan in there for the Jets in 00 as GM
____________________________________________________

Walsh – there are many coaches affiliated with him or Seifert…then holmgren…here is the list…

Walsh – Seifert – Green 1979 – Billick – 79,80 – guess that is where they met -

Seifert – Holmgren – Shanahan 92-94, Fischer 92,93, Mora 92-94, Gruden 1990,

Holmgren – Reid, also coached together at Brigham Young in 1982, didnt know that – Gruden 92-94, Mariucci 92-95, Mike Sherman, Jauron, that’s alot of people!

Green – Billick – Del Rio – Ravens, Marvin Lewis – Ravens, Nolan – Ravens, Tice

__________________________________________________________

Schottemheimer – Cower 2 times, K.C. Browns – Dungy 89-91 KC- Edwards 90-95 K.C. coach

Cower – Haslett – Mularkey – Marvin Lewis, Capers,

Dungy – Edwards, Lovee Smith

minor tree

Norv Turner,,,yeah Norv Turner…can you believe it?

Turner – Nolan 97-99 in Washington as DC coordinator and Mike Martz was there too in 97 and 98 as a quarterbacks coach.

That’s most of the coaches in the NFL…pretty interesting if you ask me…I have heard of the good old boys network but this is something else!

what do you think about this mr. vela?

by stsinaz on Dec 4, 2005 1:56 AM CST reply actions

Price was cut because he hasn’t done anything that Copper couldn’t do, and we need more o-line and linebacker help at this point, especially with Al Johnson’s injury.

Crayton’s return will help this team tremendously, but with the weather being nasty in NY, our running game is going to have to be able to grind one out.

Glenn has played tremendous football for the Cowboys, and showed a lot of courage after hitting his head on the turf late in the Broncos game and coming back in the next series.

We have not exactly been burned deep, lately. Our biggest problems on defense is our linabackers, especially their inability to stop the run late in games. I think the absence of Jay Ratliff, has also hurt our d-line rotation, especially in the 4th quarter.

I’d like to see what “Pepper” Johnson can do, but more importantly, how much does Mike Barrow have left in the tank?

Henry’s nagging groin injury is starting to worry me, because another injury in the defensive backfield, and we’re done! That’s why I held my breath when Glenn hit his head on the turf late in the Denver game. Too bad we couldn’t stop the long run by Dayne in OT.

Our defense really has to play a full 60 minutes down the stretch, because our offense is not putting enough points on the board. Too many close games! Pass the Alka Seltzer!!!!

I think our D will come through again in another close one.

Aaron Glen is one of the best signings we made in the offseason.
Is he as good as Henry? No. But that is why he is our Nickel corner and not our starter. He has played great in that role and has been more than adequate as a starter.
I can’t wait for Henry to get back in the lineup, but I thank God we have Glen to hold down the fort in the meantime.

by Kenny on Dec 4, 2005 3:29 AM CST reply actions

Lou,

I have seen every minute of Cowboys football this season….rememeber those two 2TD against Washington…guess who? Remember that easy catch Denver made for a TD? guess who….

The guy might be an OK backup….but he cant cover S. Moss, Burress, Owens, etc….

by ManTab on Dec 4, 2005 9:00 AM CST reply actions

At the end of the day, I hope you’re right, I am totally nuts and Glenn intercepts Manning today 6 times to earn a trip to the pro bowl and the league’s MVP award.

by ManTab on Dec 4, 2005 9:01 AM CST reply actions

Madcowboy,

If the Cowboys had kept Price, he would have been on the inactive list. I suspect the Cowboys felt that he would have been a disruptive force if not getting a chance to play. So, they just decided to let him go.

Another possibility is that Price asked to be released, knowing that he wouldn’t get a chance to play, and the Cowboys accommodated him.

Price is not eligible for the practice squad.

I agree that it is not common to cut a vested veteran during the season. The Cowboys have not yet filled the vacant roster slot caused by Price’s dismissal. I suspect they will wait and see how they come out of this game — injury-wise, and fill the slot accordingly. It will not go to waste. Hopefully, we will get more use out of the player to be added than we did Price. Then again, if we get nothing out of the new player, that will closely approximate Price’s contribution.

by Mr. Bill on Dec 4, 2005 10:50 AM CST reply actions

SOME OF US knew that Price was just an insurance policy that wasn’t nearly the quality WR he was way back in Buffalo. So SOME of us were against Dallas signing him.

However, I do have to question the timing of his release. Crayton is just now coming back. Dallas should have waited at least one week after Crayton’s return before releasing Price.

We don’t know how he’ll hold up during the game. If anything he may be rusty. On the other hand, if he catches more than like 2 passes he will have done more than Peerless did in any game this season….

by rich on Dec 4, 2005 11:26 AM CST reply actions

Crayton sure was unimpressive today. He dropped three balls by my count.
