Afternoon Open Thread
I get to see the big games one at a time. Carolina/Atlanta at noon and Washington/Philly at three. The Cowboys are tonight.
Live blog the Panthers and Redskins defeats.
Update: Looking at the halftime scores, I see only one team in the league that flat out quit before the opening gun. Your Atlanta Falcons. Okay, their Atlanta Falcons. I wouldn't claim them either. Then again, I was listening to the game and heard a cascade of boos from the Georgia Dome crowd as the Falcons went in for halftime.
It seems the home folks don't want them either today.
It's down to the Eagles.

Go Eagles (choke)! Go Falcons!
Who cares if the boys get in the playoffs and get bounced right away—that would be one more week we can all come in here and complain about them!!
by Mo Rice on Jan 1, 2006 11:48 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
But that would be constructive criticism, not complaining.
GO FALCONS!!!!!!!
GO PHILLY!!!!!! God,I think I’m going to be sick.

I think the league has do have more divisional games in the last two weeks of the season, it really makes the playoffs races come down to the wire.

come on ATLANTA!!! Get in the end zone!!!
hard to ever root for the Beagles…but after the season they have had……LOL…..and our SWEEP of the philly segulls…..i say Go Philly beat Washington!!!

this game doesn’t look good for Atlanta 14-3
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 12:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
If we have to rely on Atlanta’s porous defense or the expansion Eagles to give us a chance to make the playoffs, it’s going to be tough.
Atlanta’s defense is pathetic. They can’t stop the Panthers.
Our best chance now, is Washington playing on the road and having to win their fifth in a row. Unfortunately, they’re playing against Mike McMahon and the expansion Eagles. Sigh….
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 12:44 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I heard in the pregame show that Brunnell is starting for Washington too. that doesn’t help.
Man, Vick is so overated. How does this guy get voted to the probowl.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 12:47 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
How bad is that week two collapse against the Skins looking now? Just another example of how every game counts, until you’ve wrapped up home field throughout the playoffs.
I was afraid that loss would come back to haunt us, but then again you could say that about all our losses. I just wish tonight’s game is more meaningful than just for a 10-6 record.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 12:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Atlanta, like the Raiders last night, is just playing out the string. Just goes to show you that you can’t rely on teams that have nothing to play for. Our only hope now is for the Skins to choke and beat themselves, but that may be asking too much.
The Raiders had first and goal at the Giants’ one yard line, and Atlanta had 4th and one yard. Both failed. It doesn’t look good.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 12:53 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I agree onepaniolo, I knew that game would come back to haunt us, but SSSHHH, the what “if” bloggers here will tell you dont live in the past, well the past could end our season earlier than they would like.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 12:53 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Atlanta’s linebackers play like they’re 14 year old girls. How can they be slower than every fullback, running back, tight end and WR the Panther’s have? It’s like they’ve never played football before.
This is going to be a shi**y Sunday, I think.

God, I’m going to have to root for the Eagles, what the hell is this world coming too…..
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 1:00 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Joey2zs,
I think it’s called playing out the string and thinking about vacation time!
Even if Oakland had beaten the Giants last night, we still needed the Aints to beat the Bucs for that one playoff possibility to come to fruition. What was I smoking?
Watching the Falcons defense is making me sick! I just switched to the Bengals, Chiefs game. I can’t watch this Falcons defense anymore. I thought our defense had problems!

i guess Atlanta is mailing it in today. Kind of surprising……Carolina is playing like it matters.

Yeah Derrick, Go Eagles!!!!! One can only hope that the combination of Brunell’s injury, Arrington’s distraction, the Linc, and the Eagles fanatics can help us out! LOL

I hope the Eagles are more ah, “mentally prepared” for their game, LOL

Wow, guys! Our season has come down to this. It seems like only yesterday that we were celebrating our great draft, now we’re rooting for the T.O. and McNabb-less Eagles to win one for us. Where has the season gone?
No matter how this all plays out, whether we finish 9-7 or 10-6, it has been one hell of a ride, with lots of Alka Seltzer to boot!
It’s been a good season for us, but it would sure put the icing on the cake to make the playoffs!
Thanks for mailing it in, Oakland, Atlanta and the Aints!
Go Eagles!!!!??? Go Cowboys!!!!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 1:11 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I’m watching the Cincy, KC game and Larry Johnson just ran one to the house! That guy is amazing!
If KC holds on, and the Lions somehow pull it out, Vermeil could retire with a bang! That would be nice, but back to our team…. Go Eagles!!!??? Go Cowboys!!!!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 1:14 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
KC just looks like it wants to get into the playoffs, and Detroit is at least “Mentally Prepared” for their game against the Steelers, and may give KC a late Christmas present.
Too bad Oakland, Atlanta and New Orleans couldn’t be “Mentally Prepared!” LOL
Derrick, let’s hope the Eagles have more pride than those losers I just mentioned. Go Eagles!!!??? Go Cowboys!!!!

Michael Vick is in the Pro Bowl? What a joke!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 1:28 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Probably going to end up that two decent 10-6 teams in Dallas and Kansas City won’t make it to the playoffs. KC’s general manager Carl Peterson wants to have more wild cards — any chance we can get that opened up this year? (Note: sarcastic question)
by linus on Jan 1, 2006 1:29 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Linus,
At least KC has a better chance, because Denver won yesterday, and Detroit is playing well enough to give KC some hope, unlike the losers who haven’t come through for us! Regardless of how it goes with the Eagles, I just hope our Boys don’t mail it in, and at least make it a 10-6 season. Gives us a positive end to our season, and makes us hopeful for an even better 2006 season.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 1:34 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
this is one of the few years so many teams had winning records and did not make playoffs……but with parity and salary cap it is sure to continue……
i think they should let the players and coaches decide……but if it were me i would rather have a chance to take on another 10-6 team….than to have my strength of record or conference or div record keep me in our out of the playoffs…..
Giants win division and had 9 home games? Nobody else in our division got that? I say cut out a preseason game and add another week to the playoffs!!!
by Jon Bartlett on Jan 1, 2006 1:35 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Linus,
I dont know if I would want anymore teams getting into the playoffs, dont you think that would water things down and make alot of the regular season games less meaningful.
I would like the league have the teams in the divisions play each other more at the end of the season, the game would mean alot more playoff chance wise.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 1:36 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn’t mind a 18 game season though, do away with the off week and start a week earlier like they used too, labor day.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 1:38 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I’d like the roster increased from 53 to 58. teams just have no depth anymore.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 1:38 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Atlanta is just showing us what a bunch of losers they really are, and always will be! Their Super Bowl season was an aberration, and it took a former Cowboy (read Winner,)in Dan Reeves to show them the way!
I expect more out of the Eagles, who come froma very proud NFC East! I sure hope the Eagles uphold the tough NFC East tradition and at least show up for their game. They don’t owe us, but they owe it to their fans!

Derrick Yea, I guess I agree with you but am being very biased right now Look at NBA and nearly everyone is in the playoffs — Doesn’t add much. I guess in the end I feel like we are a better team than Carolina and could beat NY or Washington — well, I think we could beat Seattle too so that is what bites
by linus on Jan 1, 2006 1:42 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Jon and Derrick,
You guys make good points. I too would like the rosters and playoffs expanded, instead of expanding to any more cities, because the talent would definitely be too watered down.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 1:43 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Its been awhile since we play Seattle, and from what I watched, they seemed to have gotten alot better, where we seemed to have taken a step back abit.
I agreee with you about the NBA, but one thing I do like and that is they have a lottery for the first overall pick for the teams that dont make the playoffs, I like that and wish the NFL would something along those lines.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 1:46 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, Derrick. You got me there! I guess that may be asking too much out of an expansion team. So much for NFC East pride! LOL
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 1:47 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Derrick,
The players association will fight roster expansion tooth and nail. It drives down salaries. It will also get some opposition from teams, who remember well how Joe Gibbs abused roster exemptions and injured reserve lists to create huge rosters throughout the ’80s.
There is no depth, it’s true. But the league likes it that way. It keeps the playoff contenders churning.
by Rafael Vela on Jan 1, 2006 1:47 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Fox just spared us the agony of watching more of the sorry Falcons and is switching us to the Aints and Bucs! Thanks, Fox!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 1:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Rafael,
It also gives hope for players like Vinny, Mike Barrow, Deion and Woody to return, past their prime!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 1:51 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Isnt Atlanta the most overrated team in the NFL? I love watching Vick play, but he isnt that good. Bledsoe, as up and down as he has been, def deserves a Pro Bowl spot before Vick. The defense sucks. GO EAGLES!!!!!!!
by lou c on Jan 1, 2006 1:51 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Raf,
Yup I remember those days of Gibbs and his long injury reports.
Since so many Veterans get cut because of their salary, not their performance, dont you think the Union would go for something along the line,if a player has, say 10 years service to one team, your salary is exempt from the cap.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 1:52 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah Linus, I guess Detroit could only hold it together for one half of football. Sorry KC. Unfortunately, like we found out against the Skins in week two, the game is 60 minutes long. LOL
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 1:54 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
tell me again why we finish pro bowl voting when we do? Vick’s performance would surely kill any sane vote for him
by linus on Jan 1, 2006 1:54 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
they keep flashing the score here in KC Has to be like a dentist drill each time
by linus on Jan 1, 2006 1:55 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I just dont think its good for the league and teams to continue to bring players in for a week or two, then cut them, only to bring in another player to fill another spot short term, instead of having a five more players on the roster that can develop, you cant develop a player if he’s in and out of a teams facility every other week.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 1:57 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I hope the Eagles show up to play, and dont just lay an egg thinking about the offseason and the time off (Falcons?) I hate not making the playoffs because teams tank games and put scrubs in.
by lou c on Jan 1, 2006 1:57 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Lou C.,
Atlanta was a mediot darling all year, and so was Vick. Bledsoe definitely played better than Vick, and so did Brunell. NFC will lose another Pro Bowl!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 1:59 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
carolina 33 atl 3 pathetic what an embarrasment
by linus on Jan 1, 2006 2:03 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Hate to say this, but we lost out on the playoffs in week two. How can you fold like that and hope to make the playoffs? Losses like that ALWAYS come back to bite you! It didn’t help that we had so much inconsistency in our kicking game, and the oline, and so many injuries in our linebacking corps, but that’s just the way it goes!
We can’t really point to any one thing that cost us, it was many things, but blowing 13 point leads with 3 minutes to play just stand out more.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 2:04 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Looks like we are down to drawing one card for an inside straight what are the odds?
by linus on Jan 1, 2006 2:05 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
As pathetic as the Falcons look, I hope the Mediots don’t pick them to win the Super Bowl during the offseason. Then again, that’s why they’re MEDIOTS!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 2:11 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah everyone says we wont make the playoffs because of week 2. Every team can say that. What about the Redskins 36-35 collapse when they played TB? They let them score in the last minute and then convert a 2 pt conversion. I know we really blew that game, but all the other teams in the NFC blew some too.
by lou c on Jan 1, 2006 2:11 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
If not the Falcons, the Mediots seem to like the Rams, why, it beyond me, but they pick them every year.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 2:17 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
You just cant lose division games, no matter when you play them, early or late. They are the biggest games in tie breakers in your division and conference.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 2:19 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah Lou,
That’s why I said in my second paragraph “We can’t point to any one thing that cost us….”
It’s a 16 game season and a 60 minute game. However losses like that just stick out more. Every team has one or two games that stick out like that. That was our worst loss of the season, so that one really stands out.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 2:20 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I dont think the eagles will play hard for us. Their season ended that monday night when we beat them and when they lost whatever was left of McCrap…
I hope they win, but seems unlikely
by ManTab on Jan 1, 2006 2:22 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I take back what I said about the Saints not showing up. They’re at least making a game of it, unlike Atlanta. Iwas also wrong about the Raiders. At least they were in it for most of the game.
Atlanta on the other hand……. They mailed it in.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 2:27 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I’m happy with a 10 win season anyway, I predicted 10-11 wins. With all the injuries and JJ not performing to what I expected, I’m actually suprised we are as good as we are. But if you told me 10 wins, IN THE NFC, wouldnt be enough to make the playoffs, I would have laughed at you. 8-8 made it last year, thats pathetic. Oh yeah, and if the Redskins win, we are the best team not to make the playoffs, dont give me the Chargers crap.
by lou c on Jan 1, 2006 2:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I find that teams that are eliminated late in the year, like Atlanta, mail it in, where teams that are eliminated earlier in the season, tend to play harder because the coaches are doing alot of player evaluating to see what players on the roster can help them down the road, thats why I thought Phily, even with all the injuries they have, will come out and play hard and show some heart, atleast thats what I hope.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 2:33 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Derrick,
I agree, and don’t forget that the Redskins are on the road, they beat us and the Giants in front of that huge crowd. On the road, they beat us in Week 2, and the Rams (losing record) and Cardinals (losing record). So one never knows.
by lou c on Jan 1, 2006 2:37 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Derrick,
I sure hope you’re right about the teams mailing it in, and the Eagles showing up. It makes sense, because those that are eliminated late seem to suffer a hangover effect from being eliminated, while the ones eliminated early were over it a long time ago. No hangover!
Lou,
I too will be happy with 10-6 whether we make the playoffs or not, but I agree with you about not making it as a 10-6 team. If you’d have said during pre-season that we’d be 10-6 but not make the playoffs, I’d have said you’re nuts! Past trends have shown that 9-7 is usually enough to make it!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 2:42 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
the pro bowler Vick has been replaced I guess they are saving Vick for a meaningful game — the pro bowl
by linus on Jan 1, 2006 2:48 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Vick’s an idiot….he’ll have T.o next year and that team will suck….big egos, big mouths (including the stupid coach)
by ManTab on Jan 1, 2006 2:51 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
You’ve got that right linus, Vick a Pro Bowler, what a joke! The mediots just like him because he runs around like a maniac and trys to create plays. Half the time he doesn’t create anything but a loss or incompletion anyway. But, I guess they seem to think all that fluff makes you worthy.
by bushpilot on Jan 1, 2006 2:58 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Vick is not a running QB, he’s a Running Back who can sometimes throw the ball, though not effectively!
I’ve seen Running Backs who can throw better, like LaDanian Tomlinson. Vick making the Pro Bowl is a joke.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 2:58 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Amen brother! He’d probably be better off as a rb/wr type, a slashing player.
by bushpilot on Jan 1, 2006 3:02 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I would rather have an immobile Bledsoe than Vick. I’m sure most Wide Receivers would agree, because accuracy suffers when you run and try to throw. They’d much rather have a pocket passer who is accurate, than a dead-duck thrower, who will likely get you killed with an inaccurate throw down the middle of the field.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 3:04 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, Bushpilot. Kordell Stewart is what Vick really is. Randall Cunningham was a better QB than Vick ever will be. Randall could throw.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 3:06 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

by bushpilot on Jan 1, 2006 4:02 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Eagles D is playing tough!! 4th down for the Skins!!!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:05 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
another punt….if the eagles score again I think we have a chance…I would love to start seeing Brunell making desperate throws (no like 15 weeks ago tho) for INT’s….let’s go stupid eagles, i swear I’ll never root against you today if you win…NOT
by ManTab on Jan 1, 2006 4:06 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I knew I could count on those eagles for something, unlike those damn Falcons, bunch of gutless idiots.
Come on Philly, run the football more, that where yout success is
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 4:08 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
against you again I meant to say…anyways…just too much pressure to deal with…
by ManTab on Jan 1, 2006 4:08 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
ManTab,
That would be great, but they’re punting again. It’s up to the Eagles D!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:09 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, Derrick. We can’t count on the Falcons! They don’t have avery good history. At least our NFC East is made up of a bunch of teams with a great history. I don’t think it was an accident that they moved the Cardinals out of the division.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:12 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Oh, yeah, them damn Cardinals, since 1920, what do they have two back to back winning seasons and are 2-5 in playoff games, what a joke that frsnchise is. I guess Atlanta looking for that same kind of record too.
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 4:16 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Washington looks like they’re not here to play. Maybe the Giants win last night, meaning they couldn’t win the East, coupled with the pressure of winning 5 in a row is getting to be too much for them. They punt again!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:16 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
ok, lets go…7 more…and take the rest of the time off as well…they get the ball first in the second half, score again, game over…and it’s up to us…..damn sundays are killing me
by ManTab on Jan 1, 2006 4:17 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
well one positive sign – the only time the Redskins have put together a scoring drive is when the Eagles gave it to them way down at the eagles 20 or so…everything else for the skins offensively has resulted in punts
keep it up eagles d!
by Loozeeana_Cowboy on Jan 1, 2006 4:17 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah Derrick,
Atlanta and the Cardinals, wherever they play, are just losers! At least Atlanta went to a SB, so they got that over the Cards! LOL
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:18 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, Loozeeana! It took a muffed punt for the Skins to score!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:20 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
As long as the eagles dont turn over the ball anymore, I think their going to win this game, Mcmahon got to play alot better, get the ball to the recievers, who are wide open at times
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 4:21 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Eagles down to the 11 yard line!!!
by Loozeeana_Cowboy on Jan 1, 2006 4:22 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah!!! First and Goal for the Eagles!!!!!!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:22 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
OK, it was one yard shy of first and goal.
McMahon is going to give me a heart attack!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:23 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
McMahon has got to stop choking!!! He trips!!!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:24 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

Aikman is starting to piss me off……off course it was Pass int and you should be celebrating cabron!!!!
by ManTab on Jan 1, 2006 4:27 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
how this bunch in marooon and white beat us I’ll never know. they are bad!
by BuckeyeMark on Jan 1, 2006 4:27 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Redskins probably took this one for granted. They’re throwing their helmets on the field and think they’re going to win.
by bushpilot on Jan 1, 2006 4:29 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
by the way…i dont think we an easy one tonight…..our matchup against those receivers has trouble written all over it….we need our offense to show up
by ManTab on Jan 1, 2006 4:30 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I would like wash turn over here and stick it to those skin one more time this half with a touchdown
by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 4:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
buckeyemark, they didn’t just beat us….tht loss was humiliating….
by ManTab on Jan 1, 2006 4:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
derrick, from your keyboard to Gos’s ears my friend
by ManTab on Jan 1, 2006 4:32 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah my concern is that even if we get a gift from Philly the Boys blow it
by Mo Rice on Jan 1, 2006 4:32 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
ManTab, You’re right on both counts. Aikman tries too hard sometimes trying not to sound like a Cowboys homer, and tonight’s game may not be as easy as we think.
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:33 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Come on, Eagles D!!! Don’t suck now!!!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:34 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 4:35 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
we need a turnover….freaking eagles man….if they got me excited just to loose at the end….
by ManTab on Jan 1, 2006 4:36 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Checkin in from Korea…we don’t get the game here (they’ve got Bears vs Vikes on), so I’ve sitting in front of my PC since 3am watching the falcons get killed (they should be fined for not showing up)…
by tylee826 on Jan 1, 2006 4:37 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
They gotta hold them to a FG, or get a turnover!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:37 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Welcome, Tylee826. Glad you could tune in so early in the morning.

by bushpilot on Jan 1, 2006 4:41 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
What’s up with Aikman and Buck wearing black? I hope it’s for the Skins not making it into the playoffs! LOL
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:41 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 4:47 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
We still have a shot, guys!! One more half like this, and I’m a happy camper!
by onepaniolo on Jan 1, 2006 4:47 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

by Derrick on Jan 1, 2006 4:48 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
