Two More Years of Tuna

"The Cowboys organization has been the fairest of fair to me and hopefully I can repay them with an improved performance."

Perfect timing!! He lets guys like Fisher come out with their fairy tale stories then wham he signs an extension. Puts Fisher’s “inside” sources in perspective. ..

Happy!! Happy!! .. Glad to have such a great coach on our sideline.

Fisher: “he’s cheating you. He’s scamming you. He’s mean to dogs and old people! He’s, he’s, he’s horrible!!!” (sob)

What a melodramatic little girl is he. And I’ve had the displeasure of listening to his radio show. He’s one of these guys who thinks the intellegence of his remarks is directly proportional to his volume.

Fisher reminds me of skip bayless.

Now the boys can focus on personnel moves. I wonder how payton and zimmer do in their interviews.

Signing Parcells gurantees that the Cowboys’ ascent continues smoothly. The implication of a one year extension is clear: it’s all on the line in 2006, and anybody who lacks a zealot’s committment to the offseason program or fails to “get it” in any way won’t be around. This should motivate everybody interested in the team, both inside and outside Valley Ranch.

Three cheers to the Arkansas oilman for saving this project.

by Amos Magliocco on Jan 6, 2006 5:04 PM CST reply actions

However one regards Fisher, he did report this morning that Tuna & Jones had met yesterday afternoon to discuss an extension possibly as long as three years. I tried to find any corroborating stories throughout the day without success so I didn’t post it. I guess it’s a case of a blind squirrel finding a nut every now and then?

At any rate, I’m glad the matter is settled.

Does this mean that BP thinks he can get 2 yrs out of Bledsoe, Rivera, KJ, LA and Campbell? I bet he gets his guys to buy in with a big question mark over LA and his dedication and skills at this point. I would also think he sticks with Glover and Ellis instead of taking a hit or miss approach at their replacements.

by Sean on Jan 6, 2006 5:14 PM CST reply actions

I forgot both the Glenns.

by Sean on Jan 6, 2006 5:16 PM CST reply actions

It absolutely corresponds with Bledsoe, et al.

by Fighter15 on Jan 6, 2006 5:33 PM CST reply actions

Sean, you’re not looking at the big picture. As fans we tend to focus on the day to day minutiae and season to season details and comment on every little thing that happens.
Campbell, KJ, Terry Glenn, Rivera are bridges, they’re patches. They get Parcells from campo to the finished product.
They’re here to teach and perform, and make no mistake they’ll be discarded if better is available. I’m sure they know this.
They were never the ‘answers.’ The ‘answer’ is what’s next. Personally, I think Bledsoe is part of the answer, the other old timers were brought in to provide a fine level of professionalism that Parcells knew he could rely on, but it may soon be time to look past them and hire F.A.s in their prime or reaching their prime.

I think Glover and Ellis are gone, I’m sure that Glover is. I was hoping he’d be traded years ago when he was younger and a hotter commodity. Still though, Glover and a Sean Rogers would be a tough duo.. he’d make the Denver D Line significantly stouter.

by joey2zs on Jan 6, 2006 5:37 PM CST reply actions

Ellis has a friendly contract and a tiny bonus. Why would he go anywhere?

If we get rid of Glover, then who is the second NT? The Glover at DE experiment did not work, and Do we think that Pepper Johnson is ready to back up Ferguson? If we draft anyone for the D in the draft, I would like it to be a NT. Esp if we are losing Glover.

Bledsoe isn’t going anywhere, so this draft will be the O line draft. And probably another good blocking TE.

by alanTdot on Jan 6, 2006 5:50 PM CST reply actions

I am glad that Parcells future is sorted out and all the folderol over it can die down now.

Now everyone can concentrate on football again and on making the personnel moves to take this team to a title. Realistically I don’t think many of us expected a Super Bowl this season (playoffs would have been a nice step in that direction though), however next season the expectations are going to be significantly elevated. I’m glad he agreed to 2 years, that takes some of the pressure off of getting it done next year or it’s over. I’m glad he’s staying, we need him.

by Sterling on Jan 6, 2006 5:53 PM CST reply actions

Joey-I’m looking at the 2 year picture that is ahead of us. I’m all for selling out to get the ring. As matter of fact, BP doesn’t have time to develop rookies so lets trade our entire draft in 2006 for some other teams entire draft in 2007 plus a number 1 and 2 in 2008.

Lets sign the Best available FA in the following areas:
left Guard, Center,WR, OLB, FS, Kicker, and RT.

Damn the torpedoes,Full steam ahead!!

We can worry about rebuilding in 2008.

(just kidding BTW)

My off-season Christmas list:

Bledsoe is the bridge, maybe. But this is a young man’s game. We saw it with Aikman, last year with Vinny, and this season with Bledsoe, and the bottom line is QBs age, their talents deminish and their movements in the pocket deteriate. Dallas needs to develope a young QB, for the future. That is not to say that they don’t have a player in either Henson or Romo, but from what I have seen of these two it would probably be wise to draft a QB this year, possibly on day one. .. I personally like Brody Croyel, strong arm, tremendous heart, and a really good kid.

If Dallas trades Ellis and Glover, they would probably end up with two more day one picks. Here is how I would attempt to use them:

If Dallas does indeed end up with 5 selections on day one, they have a really good opportunity to complete the transformation to the 3-4 defense, especially with the removals of Ellis and Glover. Its my opinion that the Boys will be on the hunt for a 3-4 NT. These players with enormous size and strength are very hard to find and extremely important to the success of the 3-4 scheme. Two DT fitting those characteristics are expected to go in the first 40 selections. Gabe Watson and Halati Ngata could really help complete this transformation. .. Rafael has also pointed out how perfectly Bobby Carpenter would fit into the SOLB roll for the 3-4. Ohio State’s #1 run defense struggled a bit in the first half against ND without him. Carpenter has exceptional speed for a player with his size. He would be a great addition to a young group of LBs, and would allow Parcells to move Burnett inside. .. There are two DEs in this years draft that really intrege me, Manny Lawson and Kamerion Wimbley. Two exceptional athletes but sort of in a class by themselves. They are both extremely small to play DE in the NFL, but probably lack the experience and insticts to play LB in the 4-3 defenses. So where players like Glover and Ellis are unfortunate losses due to “not fitting in”, players like Lawson and Wimbley may be welcomed additions. If Dallas were to use a selection on one of them, they could both play major rolls in a 3-4 defense as they have the athletism to play inside or outside in that scheme, and at the same time be major players on special teams coverage. ..

Three picks down and two more to go. As I said earlier, I would keep an eye out for QBs, and Brody Croyel has tremendous character and a cannon for an arm. Sounds like a player that plays up somewhere in Wisconsin and wears #4.

The last choice may be a toss up, or just go with the best available player at two position. Which two positions? .. Center and free safety. The center position is deep, so the odds are there will be a good player in the middle of the 3rd round, especially when you consider Cs aren’t usually drafted in round #1. The safety class doesn’t appear be as deep as the C position, so Dallas may look to sign a free agent here. I’d love to see Parcells sign Charles Woodson and move him to FS, but that is very unlikely (one can always dream). Chris Hope and Cory Chavious are names I have seen as possibilities also.

Two players that have also caught my interest are FB Lawrence Vickers and WR/KR Brandon Williams. Williams has that game breaking speed, and as he developes his body and WR skills could be an immediate asset to our return game. Vickers is a talented FB who can block very well and also is a good receiver out of the back field. He fits the one back system that Parcells likes to use.

That leaves a huge need for a veteran OT. I would think Dallas will court Jon Runyan. He would give Petitti and Tucker time to develope. Now we can even talk about Columbo, and by aquiring Runyan it would give him time as well. .. If Dallas does not drfat Vickers, then Tony Richardson is a possibility there.

I just read that Dave Rayner is on Indianapolis’ practice squad. Do you think he might be an option to explore at kicker? It could be an easy way to grab a kicker that was good enough to be drafted.

I’m happy to have BP coaching the Cowboys for another two (or three) years. Great news.

by mlf on Jan 6, 2006 7:50 PM CST reply actions

I have our word for the day. I watched “Pardon The Interruption” tonight on ESPN. Tony Kornheiser was there without Mike Wilbon (two of the three Washington area HOF electors (out of 39)). I just barely caught it, but the guy they had on in Wilbon’s place was asked by Kornheiser what he thought of Big Bill’s one year extension. His answer was brief. He responded that, without Belichick as an assistant, Bill Parcells has a losing record. I thought there was a single word to characterize this sort of response. I thought the word was disingenuous. From context, I thought that this word meant that someone was selectively picking his criteria to prove his point while ignoring certain things that might disprove it, all with the intention of misleading someone. OK, I looked up the word disingenuous in my admittedly limited dictionary and found that the word meant, in one sense, “lack of candor”. In other words -dishonest. Of course, that doesn’t quite sum up my impression of the user’s intent. If you know a better single word to characterize my perception of this guy’s message, please let me know.

I am not sure about the validity of his statement, but I can tell you that Bill Parcells has a losing record at Dallas without Quincy Carter. Now, not meaning to ruffle any feathers, but I think that most of you would not want to bring back Quincy Carter. My point is that this unknown commentator could just have easily used this reference but it would not have served his purposes well. His point, it appears, is that the Cowboys’ extension of BP’s contract is sort of irrelevant given that BP “rode on Belichick’s shoulders”. That is not even to mention that BP has started over with four new teams in his coaching career. You think we might forgive him a few losses in his early years with each franchise? I guess not. This is not to mention that New England got 4 draft picks from the Jets when the Jets signed Parcells from New England. Hell, the talk now is that Herm Edwards would cost KC a 4th round pick! Are you kidding me? Don’t you think that an honest sportscaster might mention that 4 draft picks kind of helped Belichick at NE on top of the foundation that BP laid in New England in terms of the talent he brought in before he left? How about Belichick’s comments about Bledsoe in his book? BB is a malicious jerk and I would never want him to coach my team.

This is just another example of anti-Cowboys, anti-Texas bias in the national media. Are you kidding me? If Reggie Bush were a man, he would come to Austin next week when classes resume and hand the Heisman trophy to Vince Young at the Longhorn’s stadium in front of the entire student body and Longhorns’ fans.

I am delighted with Bill Parcells as the Cowboys’ head coach. I don’t want Belichick and I don’t want Quincy Carter. Bill Parcells told us his reasons for coming to Dallas and he has done nothing to make me think he is not sincere. He never promised us a Super Bowl. His goal was to build a foundation that would carry us forward for years to come. I believe he has already made impressive strides in accomplishing that. I wonder if the unknown ESPN guy was the other Washington area HOF elector? God help you Michael Irvin and Rayfield Wright! (Don’t worry, Troy, you have sucked up to the Washington mead all you need, but I am ashamed of you).

StarStruck,

Fisher’s pieces might as well be sold at supermarket checkouts. First of all, if Parcells “staffers” were rolling their eyes at the acknowledgement of the time of his arrival and his commitment and loyalty, they would be long gone by now (even if its the janitor that cleans his personal toilet). Who has time for that? Secondly, Parcells challenged anyone to come forth and say “he is contiplating retirement” .. and of course no one did, but Fisher wants to play the he said she said game. … Fisher’s stories often remind me of that old Wendy’s commercials, the old lady looking at the hamburger, and saying, “Where’s the beef?” Fisher’s stories lack substance lack “beef”! .. He takes a story and CREATES another half to it, with no proof, all specualation and his he said she said crap. Like, "I know a guy, who told a guy, who is a friend of mine that … " Just doesn’t work for me.

Off Topic-I was not able to be a dedicated couch potato this last weekend (holiday with the in-laws and all that entails) so I was wondering what was the point of Flutie drop kicking that extra point?

by Sean on Jan 6, 2006 10:42 PM CST reply actions

The point was simply that Flutie can do it, he’s been talking about doing it for real for years, he’s actually going to retire one of these days and nobody else has done it in an NFL game since 1941.

by Rafael Vela on Jan 6, 2006 10:50 PM CST reply actions

I know some one that could do it from about 40 yards out. His name is McBriar. Is it good as a FG in the NFL? I’m just looking for solutions for our FG unit. That is a basic kick for Aussies.

I’ve been a fan of Flutie’s character and professionalism for a long time. He is a class act that doesn’t need to “trick-up” his legacy. He sets a great example for all the “non-prototype” folks in the world.

I’m glad BP is staying put. He has unfinished business. Our team is not complete and has Super Bowls to win!

Go Cowboys!!

by onepaniolo on Jan 6, 2006 11:10 PM CST reply actions

alanTdot,

Ellis has a friendly contract and a tiny bonus. Why would he go anywhere?

From the Cowboys’ standpoint, I believe you are correct. His cap cost is not excessive, even for a part-time pass rusher. The problem becomes, what does Ellis want? Is he willing to continue as a Cowboy in that reduced role? Or would he rather move on to another team, where he could be featured?

What the Cowboys don’t want is an unhappy veteran in their locker room.

by Mr. Bill on Jan 6, 2006 11:25 PM CST reply actions

How great would it be for BP to take us to the Super Bowl next year and beat is ex-friend/assistant Belichick? That would be quite an exclamation point on his career.

The downside is that he might retire and go out on top then we wouldn’t have him for 2007.

by Sterling on Jan 7, 2006 2:08 AM CST reply actions

Sterling,

The real downside is that we will have to go through this same ‘will he or won’t he’ nonsense a year from now, regardless of how well the Cowboys do. You have to know that the media questions and speculations will start up again at least by Thanksgiving.

The last month of speculation has been completely driven by the media and by fans like us on blogs, forums and call-in shows. Certainly, Jerry Jones was never concerned about Parcells leaving. The players, who are closest to him, were perplexed by all the furor. Parcells, himself, never gave one indication that he would not return for 2006, going about his normal business at Valley Ranch. The only reason for the silence was so Parcells and Jones could hammer out the length and terms of an extension.

At least if Parcells goes out after a SuperBowl win, we can be content that he has left us with a solid foundation for the future. That’s what I’m looking for, with or without a SuperBowl win under Parcells’ tenure.

At his age, we know that Parcells is not a long-term solution. While he is here, though, he MUST repair the damage done by the 7 years of mismanagement under previous administrations, and set us on a solid road into the future.

by Mr. Bill on Jan 7, 2006 11:20 AM CST reply actions

You know Parcells took the Giants and the Patriots to a Super Bowl in Year 4. This team is much younger that either of those two, but if history holds up here we come Super Bowl. I can see Glover leaving before Ellis, Ellis for his production does not cost very much. I think he should have been on the field more personally.

Sterling I have wanted the Big Bill Lil Bill bowl for a while. Lil Bill beat us barely in year one of the Parcells tenure…..or was it year 2. At any rate they were obviosly a better squad, I ain’t so sure about that now or next year. Just the press conferences alone would be classic. They are still the class of the NFL til somebody beats em in the Playoffs. Brady just gets better and better but they are getting old on defense.

by Jon Bartlett on Jan 7, 2006 11:24 AM CST reply actions

Jon:

Yes, Parcells vs. Belichick…kind of like the pupil trying to show he can finally beat the teacher. I love Parcells press conferences because he’s so damn funny. Only Herm Edwards is as entertaining to me as BP. I can’t listen to Belichick though…something about his voice and the way he talks really annoys me. Only Joe Gibbs voice annoys me more…he and Jack Nicklaus sound like they are distantly related.

by Sterling on Jan 7, 2006 12:35 PM CST reply actions

We all talk about Belichick, and a previous poster commented about Pardon The interuption were Kornheiser pointed out Parcells has a loosing record without Belichick. .. This should all lead to one thing, a motivated Bill Parcells! .. He doesn’t get near enough credit for the Pats and the Jets successes after he has left those organizations. In both cases Parcells built the foundation for the future. The Pats have won championships, and trust me, with the players the Jets had at one time, they should have at least competed a few times. “Parcells players” formed the foundation of those teams. I think the Dallas Cowboys are getting to that point of a built foundation, and I am so so glad that Jerry can look at the “State of the Cowboys (Union)” and see what the future holds, instead of just looking at today. Too many owners and fans are all about today .. what have you done for me lately! .. All I can hope is that he rides off on the shoulders of the players he cares so much about. I hope he is here with the Cowboys, when the Boys make their return to glory. … We talk about retiring, but its the only way I see fitting for our coach, our Tuna! Riding off on the shoulders of his players, the guys he refused to give up on .. riding into the sunset …. with one last glance back at what he has built, and one last pump of the fist aimed right at Jerry Jones (silently saying you kept your faith in me, thank you) … then as a tears roll down his chubby cheaks he looks up and softly whispers, “How ’bout them Cowboys?” …
