Aikman, Wright, Irvin Make Final HOF Cutdown

Retired Cowboys Troy Aikman, Rayfield Wright and Michael Irvin are among the 15 finalists for the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of 2006.

Aikman and former Eagles and Packers DE Reggie White appear the surest candidates for induction this year, leaving three open spaces for the remaining 13 nominees. Wright and Irvin were the final players cut each of the past two seasons, raising questions among many Cowboys fans about an anti-Cowboys bias among the selectors.

The field, in alphabetical order is:
1. Troy Aikman, QB, Cowboys
2. Harry Carson, LB, Giants
3. L.C. Greenwood, DE, Steelers
4. Russ Grimm, OG, Redskins
5. Claude Humphrey, DE, Falcons
6. Michael Irvin, WR, Cowboys
7. Bob Keuchenberg, OG, Dolphins
8. John Madden, Coach, Raiders
9. Art Monk, WR, Redskins
10. Warren Moon, QB, Oilers
11. Derrick Thomas, LB, Chiefs
12. Thurman Thomas, RB, Bills
13. Reggie White, DE, Packers
14. Rayfield Wright, OT, Cowboys
15. Gary Zimmerman, OT, Vikings

I have this terrible feeling in my gut that a lot of Cowboys-haters amongst the HOF voters are going to use Irvin’s recent bad press as an excuse to deny him again. It makes me sick to think about.

Irvin is one of my all time favortite football players ever. If he isn’t in the HOF they might as well not have ANY wide receiver in the Hall. I just have this bad feeling that between the anti-Cowboys bias and the fact that Irvin has a very strong personality that can cause people to either love him or hate him, that he might have trouble again this year. They may string him out for 3 or 4 years on this thing.

I am trying to stay positive. Eventually he will be in there. If not the HOF has no credibility.

Aikman will be fine, Irvin will be snubbed and if Wright gets in the voters won’t consider another Cowboy short of Emmitt for 5 or more years. They will believe that 2 Cowboys in 1 year should shut us up.

If Greenwood makes it in…I’ll pull out all of my hair! I think the third string tight end for the Steelers in the 70’s is up for Hall consideration next year! You know he will make it.

If it were my Hall it would be quite a bit more exclusive anyway. I personally don’t see anyone on the list other than Aikman and White that jump out at me as MUST-BE-INs.

My prediction…Monk, Aikman, White and either Madden or Carson.

That is my prediction not who I think deserves to go. But…until Bob Hayes gets in, I am refusing to acknowledge the process as legit anyway.

Rev,
I for one believe the snub prediction but I just cannot see Monk getting in. Irvin overshadows him way too much in terms of production.

by J-MAN on Jan 11, 2006 1:17 PM CST reply actions

If Irvin doesn’t make it, then Monk doesn’t. Carson was the second best linebacker on his team, and at a subjective position, Wright at least stood alone as the talent when he played for the Cowboys. Also, how many Super Bowls again, did Madden win, or does he go in as a sports announcer?

Aikman and Reggie are no Brainers, but it will be a little tougher to ignore 3 Super Bowls for Michael also….and he was the playmaker during that period of time.

I have a question on the thread involving a value for both Glover and Ellis…What would be the Cap saving if both Larry Allen and La’Roi Glover were released prior to the Roster bonus date in March?

It goes to credability of an ability to effect a trade of those two players…

The hall of shame is a joke!! when players like dan hampton or carl eller get in but they do not consider or vote in players like harvey martin, too tall, drew pearson, bob hayes. The reason they dont want mike to get in is their afraid he will call them out on the former cowboys who deserve to be there, maybe get the cowboy fans there to start a riot or something.i know this,if and when mike goes in,im gonna be there just in case…GO COWBOYS

by manster65 on Jan 11, 2006 1:47 PM CST reply actions

I say only Aikman and White as players and Madden as a coach/announcer. Michael should get in but too much bad press right now.
Also Bob Hayes not making the HOF is ridiculous. He created the speed WR position in the NFL. He is an icon and a league altering player.

by big g on Jan 11, 2006 1:48 PM CST reply actions

Aikman, White and Moon for sure. Irvin, no way, possibly the final spots are Wright and Thomas. BTW, Lynn Swann never made it in and he arguably has as big a gripe as Irvin and he is a SB era Steeler.

by rha on Jan 11, 2006 2:22 PM CST reply actions

I agree with Big G, Hays changed the game with his speed and is the reason the zone defense came into existence.

How can he be ignored? That is history making stuff and transends anything else he may have done. Aside from that, his yards per catch and touchdowns per catch were amazing stats.

by rha on Jan 11, 2006 2:25 PM CST reply actions

rha,

A big reason Hayes missed out on the Hall is that his team and local sportswriters, who normally carry the water for candidates, didn’t do it in his case.

Raf, I was not aware, thought his drug troubles were to blame. Too bad and shame on everyone involved.

by rha on Jan 11, 2006 2:40 PM CST reply actions

Raf,

I thought the HOF selected between 3 and 6 every year? That would leave 4 potential spots, but at least 1, for Irvin and Wright.

Swann IS in the Hall and he is one of the biggest shams of all time. Have you ever compared his numbers to everyone else in the Hall? He has absolutley NO business being there. His induction was based on 4 to 6 highlight catches in his day.

by Rev. Michael on Jan 11, 2006 4:16 PM CST reply actions

I know someone will think I am crazy for arguing against Swann but here are the numbers I collected while arguing with a friend of mine that Irvin belonged in the Hall.

BTW…Bob Hayes deserves it before Irvin.

based on number of catches? Well, here is how Irvin stacks up against Hall of Famers…

Just an FYI…Irvin’s injury shortened career is two years longer than Swann’s and Irvin made almost twice as many pro bowls (5-3).

by Rev. Michael on Jan 11, 2006 4:27 PM CST reply actions

Rev,

You are correct, I was thinking about Stallworth, not Swann, sorry.

by rha on Jan 11, 2006 4:43 PM CST reply actions

rha

Stallworth is there too!

Every Steeler and their dogs have been elected!

by Rev. Michael on Jan 11, 2006 4:47 PM CST reply actions

Rev.,

Yep, just checked that out, I am wrong once again. A sham for sure. Good golly miss molly they like those Steeler WRs don’t they?

by rha on Jan 11, 2006 4:49 PM CST reply actions

aikman, wright, white, irvin, and of course madden. yes madden is over the hill but the guy was an excellent coach and was an excellent announcer. those 5 make it to me

by mike on Jan 11, 2006 6:22 PM CST reply actions

I don’t think there is anyway those voters put in 3 Cowboys. If two make it, it will be Wright and Aikman.

by Rev. Michael on Jan 11, 2006 8:40 PM CST reply actions

I used to work in a hospital in Dallas and I know that during the annual Cowboys Christmas visit one year, Michael Irvin visited a mentally retarded boy in our unit. The boy was a big card collector and had Irvin’s UM card, Cowboys rookie card and several other Irvin cards. Irvin spent over 30 minutes with the boy even though the PR people were urging him to move on. He sat in the floor with the boy and looked at all his cards (several books worth) and signed all his cards for the boy. Despite his legal troubles, he has a good heart. He sure gave that boy a memory that will never fade.

Unfortunately, Rev. Michael, with the anti-Cowboy’s bias among HOF voters and his legal troubles, I think Michael Irvin will not be voted in. I would like to say that I think he certainly deserves it and his numbers merit induction. I hope I am pleasantly surprised and he makes it.

Rick Reilly was on ESPN radio this morning crying about why there are not more Broncos players in the HOF. He actually said that Aikman didn’t rate HOF status. I wish he would come up with a list of Broncos not named Elway who have done anything to merit induction. I’m sure he could use the back of a postage stamp for his list.

Wright, Aikman and Irvin definitely deserve HOF induction.

The Packers hired Mike McCarthy the OC from the 49ers. One job for Payton down…
