Payton New Orleans Bound

The New Orleans Times Picayune reports that OC Sean Payton has been offered a contract to coach the Saints and will be introduced as head coach tomorrow.

It's year one of his administration, which makes it all but certain Payton will select a college QB to grow with him. If Houston takes Reggie Bush it will be interesting to see which of the Vince Young, Matt Leinart duo dons black and gold.

I think he will do good, I wish him luck and I actually think he has a bright future as a HC in the NFL. He is going to a really bad team though, but will have a new young QB in either Leinhart or Young.

thats good for payton hope he does well.

off topic: i know its early but kiper has us selecting jimmy williams from va tech anyone know anything on this kid? i read hell probably be a FS in the nfl, good size and nice speed from what i read about him..

Kiper had us taking Mike Williams last year on his early boards too. I wouldn’t put too much stock in his predictions this early. We don’t even know who is going to play in the Super Bowl yet.

Jimmy Williams is a good player. I am pretty sure he plays cornerback though. It’s a stretch for Kiper to predict that BP will draft a FS in the 1st round…it’s an even bigger stretch to predict that BP will draft a FS who played CB in college.

Mike,

I saw that list. My guy Bobby Carpenter is forecast 21st to New England.

I know a guy picking three spots ahead of N.E. who also needs an OLB and wouldn’t mind one upping his son-in- law — again. Didn’t the Cowboys leapfrog the Pats last year because they feared New England would draft Chris Canty? Nice little family rivalry developing there.

But hey, it’s January. Although, we’ll get a much clearer picture NEXT WEEK, when the Senior Bowl practices are held.

If the Cowboys drafted Jimmy Williams instead of Bobby Carpenter I think I would be feeling pretty disappointed on draft day. Unless it was something about Carpenter’s injury being a long term problem for him, otherwise I would rather the Cowboys have Carpenter than Williams.

by Sterling on Jan 17, 2006 6:16 PM CST reply actions

Come on now. Williams is the highest ranked CB according to Scouts. Highest ranked DB for that matter.

He’s played both positions, but is seen as a better cover corner by some, FS by others.

I say Huff or Williams would be great.

Carpenter is a stretch at #18, although I’m also a fan. I think he’ll drop to the second round.

Plus, there is quite a lot of talent in the LB area and the tweeners are usually around in the 3-5 round range.

by Fighter15 on Jan 17, 2006 6:36 PM CST reply actions

well I didn’t think Payton would get it. Who is the favorite now for OC?

by linus on Jan 17, 2006 6:38 PM CST reply actions

I dont like Williams, he played CB at V-Tech and got alot of heat after his bowl game for playing dirty. He sounded from what I read like a bad character guy and BP will not put up with that stuff. He could turn out to be a good player, but I like Bobby Carpenter alot better.

Look at Pac Man Jones, he is similar to Jimmy Williams this year, he was the top rated CB, but look what Adam Jones did this year: Absolutly nothing. If you look at the LB’s and D-Line men drafted, they can make more of an impact. I would rather take an OLB or NT than CB/FS, unless its Michael Huff. That guy is going to be really good.

by lou c on Jan 17, 2006 6:41 PM CST reply actions

Fighter15:

If he’s the top rated DB on the board then I doubt he’ll be around at #18 anyway despite Kiper’s supposed mock draft expertise. There are a lot of teams ahead of us who desperately need a CB.

I’d rather the Cowboys take a LB.

i know its real early, but i dont follow college football like most people do here so im just curious about who the “experts” predict so i know a lil about them is all.

by mike on Jan 17, 2006 7:44 PM CST reply actions

How about Claude Wroten from LSU? He is ALOT like Marcus Spears, supposely has a little more potential. If we get rid of Ellis and Wroten falls to the 2nd I say grab him immediently. He played pass rushing DT just like Spears and we could convert him to 3-4 DE.

LDE: Chris Canty, Jeremiah Ratlif
NT: Jason Fergunson, La Roi Glover, Pepper Johnson
RDE: Marcus Spears, Claude Wroten

Looks real good to me. If you trade Ellis, and then take that pick and the 2nd to move up and get Wroten, we would still have our first, which we could get either Chad Greenway or Bobby Carpenter:

LOLB: Chad Greenway, Scott Fujita
ILB: Kevin Burnett, Ryan Fowler
ILB: Bradie James, Scott Shanle
ROLB: DeMarcus Ware, Kalen Thorton

Then you sign a Corey Chavous or similiar like player for FS, and sign an OT like Tom Ashworth. Then the rest of the draft you grab O-Lineman, and maybe a WR late. A burner is likely to drop to the 6th round, kind of like that rookie that Houston took from the small school whos in the Pro Bowl. Cant think of the name.

CB- Anthony Henry, Aaron Glenn
SS- Roy Williams, Justin BerryO
FS- Corey Chavous, Keith Davis
CB- Terrence Newman, Jaqcue Reeves

That is a MONSTER defense that will last about 7-10 years. NT and FS will eventually need to be drafted, but that is a sickkk defense.

mike:

That’s totally cool. I just hope Kiper is wrong on that prediction.

lou c:

Ironically, last year I saw some mock drafts that had the Cowboys drafting ‘Pac-Man’ Jones. I’m very glad BP went the FA route with Henry instead, Pac-Man seems like a headcase.

I am really disappointed that Payton is leaving. I wish him well in The Big Easy (especially since one of my best friends is a Saints fan – they do exist), but I think we could of done great things this year on the offensive side of the ball.

Here’s betting that an OC won’t be hired, but Parcells resumes play calling duties.

With drafting Greenway and Wroten, we could sign Chavous, Ashworth, and a FB like Fred Beasley. We could either resign Dan Campell or sign a FA TE cheaply. We use the rest of the draft to get OLineman, and a WR in the 7th, and our offense for 06 looks like this:

QB: Drew Bledsoe, Tony Romo, Henson
RB: JJ, MBIII, Tyson Thompson
FB: Fred Beasley
TE: Witten, Campell, Ryan
WR: Keyshawn Johnson, Terrance Copper, Late Round Project WR
WR: Terry Glenn, Patrick Crayton
LT: Flozell Adams, Derrick Morris (Draft)
LG: Larry Allen, Stephen Peterman
C: Al Johnson, Patrick Ross (Draft)
RG: Marco Rivera, Andre Gurode
RT: Tom Ashworth, Rob Petiti

Sign Ryan Longwell, and keep McBriar at Punter.

That, IMO, is a Super Bowl Caliber team in the NFC barring injuries. And its realistic if Jerry Jones is intent on winning now and opening his wallet up for another offseason.

i do know a lil bit about greenway since i live in iowa and i dont think hell be around at 18 for us, nice if he was though.

Jimmy Williams can play FS SS or CB along with special teams. He is big for a corner, tackles well, and just cuz it says VT on the side of his helmet does not mean he will have the character issues of Pac Man who was from West Virginia or Marcus Vick.

Hall and others from Tech are doing quite well as pros. That said, there was plenty of unsportsmanlike contact from VT in the Gator bowl…..and it should have been flagged by the officials. Even the Guvna is taking to commenting on Virginia Football these days…..and UVA had incidents as well…..but then what Bowl team in NCAA DivIA football is incident free?

Personally Darry Tapp would be better than Jimmy Williams…..but he is a bit big for the tweener position…probably a better fit as DE in a 4 man front so ….i say OLB. You can find plenty of FS in 2nd or 3rd round……..we got three good CB and Reeves played well when he had to as well.

OT, OLB, TE, MLB, NT, FS…….we got plenty of places for improvement and help.

Best of luck to Payton……on the upside I think his choice of New Orleans means he will not get as many assitants running off to the Big Easy with him. Given the current state of things there……it will be intersting he might raid the Giants, Ravens, Tampa Bay or Philly as much as he does the Dallas Cowboys……..he has contacts at all of em.

I think the play calling was pretty good for the most part…..there were a few goal line situations that were questionable but other than that……. but ask Tom Brady about losing your starting tackle and he and Drew Bledsoe can compare bruises on their backsides…..we failed to run and pass block when we did those two things we beat and competed with the best teams in the NFL……other than Pittsburgh we gave the other 3 of the final four all they wanted and beat the Panters.

Raf what were you saying about Al Saunders?

Notice Mangini talked longer about Bill Parcells than Belichek in his acceptance of the HC job in NYJ. Carthon also tossing Parcells name in the mix…….interesting……wonder when Belichek will bite the bullet and mention big Bill again……maybe at Parcells funeral or the Hall of Fame.

by Jon Bartlett on Jan 17, 2006 9:26 PM CST reply actions

Jon:

I recall Charlie Weiss mentioning Parcells influence on him at a press conference after he took the ND job. The guys who were there with the Giants, Pats, and Jets know who did what. If it weren’t for Parcells there would be no Belichick. I still remember when Parcells was not going to be allowed to be the coach of the Jets because of his Pats contract. The talk at the time was that Belichick would be named the coach of the team until Parcells was out from under his contract obligations and then Belichick would go back to being his assistant and BP would take over. Supposedly Parcells was going to be a “consultant” or some such title during that year, which meant he was going to be the real coach and Belichick (who had just bombed in Cleveland as a HC) would be his puppet until BP could officially be the coach without the Pats making a fuss. No matter how many Super Bowls Belichick won with the Pats he knows he wouldn’t be anything without Parcells. BP made him, and just like all those assistants who came from Holmgren’s staff should be giving thanks to Bill Walsh, it is right that guys like Mangini give credit to Parcells.

DMN writers JJTaylor and Todd Archer mentions that as far as an OC for the Cowboys next season, Parcells can go with Sparano or Chris Palmer. They failed to mention that BP can just go back and call the plays himself as he did the first 2 years with the team. Sparano is on the bubble (IMO) to produce an even decent offensive line and the Houston Texans weren’t exactly an offensive powerhouse with Palmer as OC. I had hoped that Mike Sherman would consider being our OC but with a few more head coaching opportunities left, he’ll hold out.

by Joe on Jan 17, 2006 10:40 PM CST reply actions

Adios Mr. Payton, Good Luck to you! No worries, BP can call the plays (God forbid that if Sparano does not go to NO with Payton, that BP DOES NOT promote Sparano to OC). No need to hire an OC that way, and with the money saved (here’s to wishful thinking) Steve Hoffman can be re-hired. Let’s face it, at least 2 games were lost to crappy kicking last year. Which is a problem we DID NOT have while Hoffman was here. Where would those 2 (or more)games have put us? Hopefully,(like I said, wishful thinking) TunaMan will see his way to bringing him back.
