I am tempted to look around the web and copy and paste as many mock drafts as I can in the next few hours just for a laugh later…because they are all going to be turned upside down by later tonight.
The North looked like the far better team in practices from what I saw. Part of that was that Fisher and the Titans staff ran such crisp, efficient practices. Nolan, Turner, and the 49ers staff ran more laid back and sloppy practices, I thought. Watch for the South doing the reverse to Santana Moss’ little bro Sinorice, and a few other trick plays from the South team. Moss is a burner.

Can anyone list a few “players to watch?”
I know Carpenter, Lawson, and Watson have been talked a lot about on these threads, anyone else?

Players to watch for me:
Offense-
QB Jay Cutler
OT Jon Scott
OT Marcus McNeil
OT Eric Winston
C Nick Mangold
OG Charles Spencer
FB Garrett Mills
Defense:
OLB Manny Lawson
OLB Kimerly Wiberon(?)
DT Gabe Watson
FS Daniel Bullocks
Those are some guys I think the Cowboys would be interested in.

I think DeAngelo Williams is going to have a good day. Man this guy is 5’8", that is small tho.
by lou c on Jan 28, 2006 3:10 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I agree with lou c, but would add:
NT Babatunde Oshinowo
OLB Chad Greenway
TE Marcedes Lewis
TE Joe Klopfenstein
S Anthony Smith
FB Lawrence Vickers
OT Ryan O’Callaghan
BTW – Manny Lawson and Kamerion Wimbley are playing DE in this agme, so don’t look for them at the OLB spot. They will be playing on the end of the line out of a 3 point stance, but both will likely have to play OLB in the NFL.

Cutler’s stock just dropped a ton there. What a horrible pass!!
There’s the play to Moss, he’s a speed demon!!
Kamerion Wimbley is consistently rounding the edge on the RT and getting into the backfield nearly every play. He almost got a hand on Cutler on the second play from scrimmage, but Cutler threw it away. His pass rushing skills and quickness are amazing. He just doesn’t have the size to toss an OT aside like Bruce Smith or Reggie White could do with their size and strength.

Beautiful openfield tackle by Anthony Smith. I like that guy.

Eric Winston just got abused on that sack play. I don’t know about him.
Gabe Watson seems to be having trouble penetrating because of the OG chipping him while the Center locks him up. I am going to keep an eye on this the rest of the game to see if he can adjust.

Poke,
I would keep an eye on Brodie Croyel and Greg Blue on the South team. Blue is one of the faster safeties coming out, and he is projected to go right around where we draft in round 2. Also keep an eye on Skyler Green returning punts and kickoffs, another speedster. Green and Brandon Williams (not playing) are my favorites to get drafted by Dallas as WR/KR playmakers. Roman Harper has been a solid safety all year, but I wonder if he will look a bit slow against the best players in college football. If he has a good showing his stock can raise as well.
Babatunde Oshinowo is a big DT that may become an option for Dallas if they can’t grab Watson. I’ll certainly be watching Gabe Watson closely though.
There is an excellent battle for the top FB spot. Vickers versus Mills. North starter versus South starter. Watch closely to see who outperforms the other.
I believe there is a good possibility that Parcells and Jones look to move up in round one to land Chad Greenway or D’Brickshaw Ferguson. So I’d keep an eye on how they perform tonight. … A few months back I saw Greenway play and he impressed me a bunch. He was considered by some a top 5 selection, but a few juniors entering the draft have caused him to fall slightly. If he is on the board still nearing the 10th selection, I think Dallas will be major players to trade up to select him.

Manny Lawson has great quickness off the line and a vicious inside spin move, but he seems to get higher than Wimbley and allow the OT too much leverage to push him back. Very fast though.

I think Moss is going to go alot higher than people project. Klopenstien with a nice catch right there, theres some good TE’s in this draft. Klopenstien, Byrd, Fasano, Lewis, Pope, Nix, theres alot of potential.

Klopfenstein reminds me a lot of Witten with his speed and catching ability. Beautiful TD catch in perfect coverage.
by Sterling on Jan 28, 2006 3:45 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Vernon Davis reminds me of Shannon Sharpe.
They said Klopfenstein has a 38" vertical leap. How does someone 6’5 1/2" and 250 pounds leap 38 inches in the air? That’s amazing.
by Sterling on Jan 28, 2006 3:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Sterling,
I have a 43" vertical leap, I’m 6’5" and weigh 235lb, but I’m on a trampoline though.I guess that doesn’t count, huh!!

Derrick…lol. Not in a football game, no.
Watson needs to step it up. The play before the INT he got double teamed and they knocked him back on his backside. The next play he was 1-on-1 with the center and got locked up and went nowhere, then he looked like he stopped trying and let go. He needs to shine out more today.

Skyler Green…welcome to the 2nd day of the draft.
by Sterling on Jan 28, 2006 4:01 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Nice run stuff by Watson…why can’t he do that more consistently?
by Sterling on Jan 28, 2006 4:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Watson has the size and agility, but he needs alot of work on his technique
by Derrick on Jan 28, 2006 4:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Wow!! Wimbley almost got to Michael Robinson, he leaped over the center and just missed him. He’s always close but can’t seem to get these QB’s.
by Sterling on Jan 28, 2006 4:10 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
watching some of these recievers today shows why you dont draft them in the first round
by Derrick on Jan 28, 2006 4:19 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Marcus McNeil gets a reception. He has better hands than most of the WR’s in this game!!
Manny Lawson is a beast, but I think he could play DE in a 4-3. Maybe he plays bigger than his size, but his game seems to be more trying to overpower OL’s than as a speed rusher. It will be interesting to find out how fast he is at the combine. I bet Carpenter is at least as fast as him.

Eric R:
Good analysis, especially about the fullbacks Mills and Vickers. Vickers looks way more impressive to me thus far, but maybe he has got more chances than Mills.
Skyler Green really damaged himself when he botched that punt return and the other team got a TD out of it. I don’t want to see him wearing the star after that and I remember he did that against Miami in the Peach Bowl too.
Babatunde has done nothing this game. He gets doubled every play and doesn’t seem to be able to chop the OL’s hands down and seperate. Watson has been streaky, but mostly ineffective except for one run stop.
I don’t see the Cowboys trading up for Greenway. Carpenter is just about the same player as Greenway. If Greenway were that much better I could see it, but why use another draft pick in a trade to get a player that is so close to a player you can get if you stand pat?

Sterling,
Who looks better, Cutler or Croyle?
Pat Watkins looks good today. If he drops to the 3rd I think we should move up and grab him.
by lou c on Jan 28, 2006 5:16 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Wimbley got an offsides. He is a good athlete, but I don’t think he is 1st or 2nd round material at all.
Max Jean-Gilles put Gabe Watson on his backside. Then he pancaked the other Stanford DL. He is a beast. I noticed him in the practices last week, but I kept forgetting to mention him because so many other players (Watson) had my attention.
I would take Mangold or Jean-Gilles over anyone else in the 2nd round.

Just to speculate something, we could cut LA to free up cap space, and sign Bently and Ashworth, and draft Jean-Gilles. Our line would be:
LT Adams
LG Jean-Gilles
C Bently
RG Rivera
RT Ashworth

Neither one looks all that great IMO. Cutler probably hurt his status today by his tepid performance. Croyle looks a little confused sometimes. Ironically the only QB that seems to be making a lot of plays is Michael Robinson from Penn St.
Tamba Hali is a beast. 2 sacks already.
Watkins has played well. Keep in mind as of now we don’t have a 4th round pick this year, so I don’t know what it would take to move up, or if we would have to even. Hard to predict the 3rd round board until you see how the first two shake out.

I would rather see JJ renogotiate with LA than cut him. He has been one of the best OL in Cowboys history, I don’t think he deserves to be cut because he was able to negotiate a big contract a few years ago. If anyone should be cut it should be Rivera.

WOW, this game is full of punt returners just no punt catchers.

Watson did not impress me at all- Gilles owned him pretty much full time.

Sterling,
I am not as sure that Cutler made a ‘horrible pass’ as I am that Cedric Griffin made an incredible athletic move to even touch that ball, without interfering, much less intercept it.
by Mr. Bill on Jan 29, 2006 12:33 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Mr. Bill:
Cutler is likely overrated and Griffin may possibly be underrated. It all depends on whether a particular team needs a QB (Dolphins, Lions, etc.) or a CB (Giants, many others). I am looking at those plays and players completely from a neutral viewpoint as those are not positions I consider the Cowboys in need of this year. Ahhhh…what a difference and free agency a year makes!!
