Free Agency Update

The Star-Telegram puts a new spin on comments Jerry Jones made at the Combine. The paper hints that Jones may cut NT/DT LaRoi Glover if he does not agree to a pay cut. The team has also inquired about reworking OG Larry Allen's deal.

There has been back and forth about Glover's market value here. Some have said he'll have low to no value. I've had a more sanguine view. The pessimists may just be right. If a new CBA is not ratified and the cap tightened, teams like Denver and K.C., who might offer a pick for Glover in normal circumstances, will be scrambling simply to survive. Unless a last-minute solution is found today, it seems that the trade market for all big ticket veterans will dry up.

On a related note, how many 2005 playoff teams are about to see their 2006 aspirations go up in smoke if the impasse continues? Washington, Denver and Tampa Bay have lots of restructuring and cutting to do. The Chiefs, who just missed the playoffs, but were trying to keep all their veterans on board for one more run with new HC Herman Edwards may also see their short-term plans scuttled.

The Redskins are done for next year, they give up draft picks for players and sign others to enormous contracts, now they dont have alot of draft picks yet might have to have 20 rookies on their team. Thats alot of FA rookies. Snyder’s overspending is finally catching up to him.

As for Denver, I dont see how they could afford any big FA’s like Glover or TO. They have 2 draft picks which could get them guys like Bunkley and Kiwunuka or a WR. They will be OK, maybe not super bowl caliber but def playoff caliber.

TB I think was overrated this year, they have a nice defense but will Brooks be too expensive to keep? THey would save a ton of money if they let him go. I could def see them missing the playoffs.

The Chiefs have been interested in just about every big name FA, they want John Abraham or Ty Law. But they can forget about that. They are almost as bad as the Jets or Redskins when it comes to the cap, and they are going to have to let guys like Shields and Holmes go probably. THey still have great players over there, so they like Denver will be playoff caliber but not Super Bowl caliber if the next coming days are as bad as expected.

The Bills released NT Sam Adams as expected. He was too out of place in a 4-3 defense there. I dont know how in the world the Bills would pass up Ngata, even though some Bills fans claim they won’t draft him because they want more of a pass rushing DT than a space eater. I dont understand their logic, Ngata can do everything, but if they wanted to trade down I would consider moving up.

by lou c on Mar 1, 2006 12:53 PM CST reply actions

I can see us moving up for Ngata if we have to cut Glover. However, it also seems plausable that we would hold out and pick up Gabe Watson in the 2nd. As far as the CBA goes, these owners are certainly 90% through the throat of the golden goose. The smaller market teams need to step up and start generating their own income so teams like the Cowboys can stop subsidizing losers like the Cardinals. IMO, they need to develop their own revenue streams and stop relying on us so they dont have to take what little money they have to meet their salaries. Like Jerry says, we will help them if they can prove they need it, otherwise like any other business they must make it viable on their own.

Gabe Watson is just too much of a risk- he took too many plays off and was even benched last year. Just no way we take a chance on a guy like that- we need people who keep their own motor going; not one that keeps needing jump starting.

Daniel Bullocks (S) must seriously be on the radar. What do you think of Mike Kudla 6’3" 265 as a ILB? He played DT for Ohio State but showed good movement at the combine?

Daniel Bullock was doing as we call it here in Fl “the damn thing” in the combine scout were now predicting him to have better covering skills than his brother who is a starter with N.O. I wouldnt be surprised if we traded our 1st rounder now for more picks in the second round with the amount of talent between the 30-62nd pick as far as Watson is concerned i do believe B.P will get him to play

by mridge78 on Mar 1, 2006 9:53 PM CST reply actions

maybe a guy like thomas howard out of utep in the mid to late rounds 6’3 240, 4.39 40, maybe a good young linebacker

i hate to say it guys….i each day it sounds to me more and more like T.O. will be wearing the star next year….the chiefs and broncs..cant pay him…he was at the all star game with roy…parcells eating with rosenmouth…im thinking as much as it will bother me…KJ might end up in philly…and T.O in dallas…they need a vet. wide out…and i think T.O. want to be a cowboy…what do you guys think..?

by IRON MAN on Mar 2, 2006 1:06 AM CST reply actions

T.O is the best receiver in the Nfl (Moss won’t go over the middle). Whether he’s going to behave himself no one knows. He’s missed a lot of football this year and i’m betting he’s eager to play again, perhaps eager enough to behave and definitely eager enough to work hard. I’d be willing to give the guy a chance, he’s seen where a bad attitude can get him and how it can hurt him. Hopefully if WE get him he’ll be the same old T.O on the field but a new man off it.

by Mogz on Mar 2, 2006 2:53 AM CST reply actions

Ironman,

I hope you’re wrong.

Mogz,
Sorry, but I can’t agree with you on this. Don’t you think he would have been a new man off the field when he went to the Eagles? Those fans welcomed him like he had already brought home the trophy. McNabb campaigned for him to come to the organization, welcomed him like a brother and threw him the ball 15-25 times per game. Look at the results. He didn’t learn from his stint with SF and I just can’t believe that a 32 year old receiver would be willing to change because he sat on the bench for a year. The only way he changes is if he accepts a low contract filled with incentives that makes him behave. Even then, he’ll transform into the old T.O. as soon as he meets those incentives. Plus, we don’t need that kind of ego influencing our very young team.

The Cowboys do not need this guy on the team to win a Superbowl and there are a lot of fans out there (including me) that would HATE to see him ever have the honor of wearing a Cowboys uniform. The only thing you’d hear about that win for the rest of your life is how they couldn’t have done it without him.

N O to T.O.

blitz;
TO might be a forgone conclusion. I believe the cowboys are definately interested. How much who knows. But if the CBA doesn’t go through, most of the possible suitors for TO will be gone. I believe Dallas and Miami would be the only ones with the cap space to accomodate him. TO will have little bargaining power. If JJ smells a good deal, he may just do it.

by J-MAN on Mar 2, 2006 6:53 AM CST reply actions

J-MAN,

I know, I know. I’m not saying it won’t happen, I’m just saying I don’t want to see it happen. You are correct in that if the CBA doesn’t go through, the chance of him coming to Dallas increases tremendously.

If he joins the team, it will be difficult for me to be happy if they win it all. It would be like having your kid win a gold medal in the Olympics then you find out he took steroids. You’d still love him, you’d still be happy for him, but the victory just wouldn’t be the same…at least to me.

by Blitzkreig on Mar 2, 2006 8:18 AM CST reply actions

Trust me, it will not happen in a million years, no matter what the price tag. The WR play last year was the best part of the whole offense, without question. Better than the RB’s, the QB, and definitely better than the O-Line. If it was going to be tampered with at all, it wouldn’t be for a player older than TG and not much younger than Keyshawn.

Besides, a high-profile WR who whines if the ball isn’t thrown his way enough would never want to come play for a QB like Bledsoe (who likes to throw to TE’s and spread the ball around), and a coach like Parcells (who prefers to run the ball and play a conservative style of offense). It’s a horrible fit for both parties, and Parcells is smart enough to know that from the start. All other speculation is buying into the media hype about the possibility of such an absurd personnel move. Trust me, it ain’t gonna happen.

by Sterling on Mar 2, 2006 8:42 AM CST reply actions

Sterling,

I can’t even tell you how much I hope you’re right about him coming. I think you hit the nail right on the head about him not fitting with Dallas’ offense which is just one of many reasons I don’t want him here. There’s no way he wouldn’t be complaining after the first half of the first game of the year.

by Blitzkreig on Mar 2, 2006 8:58 AM CST reply actions

i cant see two guys who whine about not getting the ball on the same team…Keyshaun was effective last year..i would rather see that money go to Javon Walker than T.O. he could possibly become available and would be a nice addition..hey what r the chances of Dallas Picking up Drew Olsen from UCLA or Omar Jacobs with our 3rd or 4th round pick? dont sleep on these guys especially Q.B’s for the M.A.C conference does Rothlesburger/pennington/leftwich/ ring a bell?
