Can someone tell me how the vikings were able to sign Guard Jason Whittle from the Giants. I didnt think you could sign a free agent until after the start of the new year?

by DALLAS2076 on Mar 6, 2006 9:51 AM CST reply actions

DALLAS2076,

If a player is cut, he may be signed by another team at any time. The league allows for future contracts (whose provisions start in 2006) at this time of the year.

The start of the new year is when players whose contracts expire become available as free agents.

The only reason we haven’t seen more of these signings is that both teams and players are wary of signing contracts under the old CBA rules. It is difficult to fashion a decent contract under those old rules, with the 30% rule and the limit on bonus proration. Plus, a lot of teams are too busy trying to figure out how to get under the old cap limit.

Once it is definitely decided whether a new CBA will be in place or not, more signings will take place.

Thanks for clearing that up Mr. Bill. I thought i knew my stuff. I guess you learn something new everyday. One other thing, what is the word out of buffalo on Mike Williams? As far as I know he wasnt injured, it just seems odd to give up on the #4 overall pick from just a couple of years ago. Was he just lazy or what?

by DALLAS2076 on Mar 6, 2006 1:00 PM CST reply actions

Dallas2076,

The line you keep hearing about Williams is that he was “soft.” Failed at both OT and OG positions. Played for a great OL coach and couldn’t keep a starting job.

Dallas needs a dependable OT signing this year. I don’t see Williams as having a better shot than Marc Columbo.
