And They're Off!
-- J.J. Taylor of the Dallas Morning News says the Cowboys have spoken to C Kevin Mawae's agent. He also says the team has shown interest in Patriots OG Steve Neal and Lions OL Kyle Kozier.
Dallas was also negotiating with C/G Andre Gurode and OLB Scott Fujita Friday night.
-- The Saints are the early leaders in the Drew Brees sweepstakes. The Saints will host Brees Saturday. He will visit Miami Sunday. New Orleans is offering more guaranteed money than the Dolphins or the Detroit Lions, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
The same article claims that Saints will pursue TE Dan Campbell.
-- The Miami Herald puts strong odds on Brees signing with New Orleans and says the Dolphins are working hard to complete a trade for Duante Culpepper.
-- The Panthers are putting the hard sell on Ravens DT Ma'ake Kemoeatu, hoping to get his signature before teams like the Browns get to make their pitch.
-- Has LeCharles Bentley already signed? If you believe Chargers' GM A.J. Smith, he has. Bentley apparently turned down an offer to visit San Diego to close a deal.
Update: the Philadelphia Inquirer puts Bentley in Philly this morning. The Eagles are apparently offering a huge deal, with a $10 to 12 million signing bonus.
-- The Giants will host LB LaVar Arrington Sunday. His agent Carl Poston claims Arrington has received calls from at least a dozen teams.
-- The Redskins have contacted the agent for TE Dan Campbell. No word on whether a visit has been scheduled.
-- The Dolphins have scheduled a Saturday visit with WR David Givens, (apparently not a Brown, as one report stated earlier this evening).
-- The Jets have scheduled Saturday visits with Pats OT Tom Ashworth and LB Matt Chatham.

More free agent news as it is announced.

Anyone have ESPN Insider? They have an early FA report up.

NVM, it’s just an article on where he expects a few guys to go. You don’t even need Insider to see it.

The report is false, tomorrow Givens is scheduled to travel to Miami, according to his agent the reported contract might have appeared at the Browns web page by hackers.

Whats the scouting report on Patriots OG Steve Neal and Lions G Kyle Kozier.
we talking solid, good, or average?
by ezzi110 on Mar 11, 2006 12:44 AM CST reply actions
Steve Neal is pretty good, just a Guard as he didn’t played in Football in College, but he has been really important in the Patriots run.
Kyle Kosier is an interesting prospect, he’s just a solid Guard, but his upside is that he can play both Guard positions and RT.

Steve Neal is a former wrestler who never played college football. He was spent significant time on the IR with the Pats.
Kosier is a bit more compelling, IMHO.
If they sign Neal and not Ashworth I will be shaking my head.

I am glad to see the DMN mentioned Akin Ayodele in their article on FA. Not to try to revive my old chestnut…but I still believe the idea has a lot of merit, would help the LB’s a LOT, and wouldn’t be nearly as expensive as most people think.

Sterling,
Neal was considered one of the better players on N.E.‘s line and has been rated about the same as Ashworth, from what I’ve seen. Kosier looks like dreck, a possible replacement for Gurode, but not starting material.
Signing Neal means Larry Allen is gone.

Rafael:
Burning the midnight oil…eh, Professor? If Neal can get it done, I am all for it. From what I have heard he has been on IR more in his career than in games, but hey…so was…well, I can’t think of anyone, but I am sure a lot of great players went through it their first few seasons and turned out to be good.
If LA is gone, then I am sad and the end of an era is over. I know, Favre may hang it up too this year. I still remember Roger Staubach announcing it. My grade school teacher had to counsel me that things like this just happen with the passage of time.
So from you, Dr. Vela…thanks for putting the words on the chalkboard. Perhaps it was time anyway, if a more suitable and affordable player can be found, then I am all for it. I just want to see the team win, Larry Allen or not.

Here’s a write up on Neal from a year and half ago:

Sterling,
Spring break, baby. That’s all I can say.

This is just me guessing, but from what I’ve read this year, I think the ‘boys are going into FA with less gusto then they did last year. Seemed like we beat everyone to the punch last year. Now, it seems like others are beating us (philly & Bentley). Hopefully I’m wrong, but I think we’ll not see any major headlines for our ‘Boys. We’ll see some lateral decisions (e.g, dropping Gurode and Campbell for largely equivalent talent). TO to the ‘Boys… nah… I wouldn’t even worry about it.

In that case, come out here for a visit!! There’s always USC Pro Day on April 2!! This year that’s almost like a combine workout there…Mr. Humble Ivy Leaguer Professor. ;)

I would imagine if the Cowboys sign a player like Neal then it’s got to be as a backup; He’s not going to replace Larry Allen nor would he be the heir apparent to Allen. It could also be a leak to put some pressure on resigning Andre Gurode if that is their goal. Any such signing would be for backup purposes and to cover them in case they don’t land a guard in the draft.

FS is our top priority…after K, OT, OLB, NT, and center if we do not resign Gurode. Turk, you’ve said that in a previous thread too and I’ll respond the same way I did before. We did not lose the Washington game because of coverage. We lost because of a lack of pass rush. Brunell had all day and you can’t expect anyone to be able to cover a good receiver like Moss for a long period of time. They were still right on top of him. It was a great throw and great catch. Lack of pressure also allowed Brunell to scramble the way he did. FS will be addressed, but IMO, it is NOT the top priority by a long shot.
by Blitzkreig on Mar 11, 2006 9:07 AM CST reply actions
top priority is KICKER derrick…oline and fs and alot of other things are important…but if you play the game like bill chooses too …you need a good kicker….there is nothing we lacked more than a kicker
by IRON MAN on Mar 11, 2006 9:43 AM CST reply actions
I have to agree. If we had even an average kicker, that was three more wins, and a possible first round bye.
