One More Kicker Off the Board

The Cowboys' options at placekicker just diminished. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that former Packers K Ryan Longwell has signed a contract with the Vikings. (Thanks to Eric R. for the tip.)

-- The Cowboys lost another option when K Matt Bryant re-signed with the Bucs.

maybe vin is the big bang we are waiting for

by mike on Mar 11, 2006 5:54 PM CST reply actions

Wow, Longwell got a 5 yr/ $10 mill deal. $3 mill signing bonus.

I love it when I get to answer my own questions, makes me look smart.

by altercall on Mar 11, 2006 5:55 PM CST reply actions

I really hope we get Vinateri now. Longwell was my favorite pick also. I’ve got my fingers crossed!

More bad news guys … it happening quick … Brandon Llyod is a Skin

by Eric R on Mar 11, 2006 6:02 PM CST reply actions

Now it’s time to go berserk, Dallas needs to pursue Vin, Vanderjerk or Bryant and hard!

by Chandus on Mar 11, 2006 6:05 PM CST reply actions

according to someone quoting the St Petersburg Times, the BUcs have resigned Bryant. That leaves only Vinni and Vanderjerk.

by burmafrd on Mar 11, 2006 6:06 PM CST reply actions

I guess that contract is in line with what we expected. So we’re still looking at about $2.5 mill for Vinatieri, $2 mill for Vanderjact and $1.5 mill for Brown. I’m just glad to see those numbers didn’t go up with the CBA.

i Dont get even with the larger cap room the skins were five million over after lavar Left. how are they taking on more salary?

Vinateri will probably go back to the Patriots, Vanderjaht cant kick off, so I’m getting the feeling we’ll have a revolving door of kickers again, Where are you baby face CORTEZ, god help us, glad to see Jerry is making the kicking situation a priority, not!!!

Brown is an RFA, but he couldn’t have been qualified as anything could he?

by altercall on Mar 11, 2006 6:14 PM CST reply actions

Wonder if PB’s reputation with kickers scared him off…I doubt it was $$$ or the scenery of MN

by TL fan on Mar 11, 2006 6:14 PM CST reply actions

I have always said that I like a guy who can boom kick offs into the end zone … and Edinger is available, isn’t he?

by Eric R on Mar 11, 2006 6:16 PM CST reply actions

"The Washington Redskins cut five players Friday and re-signed running back Rock Cartwright.

Punter Tom Tupa, safety Matt Bowen, cornerback Walt Harris, defensive tackle Brandon Noble and center Cory Raymer were released as the team met the midnight deadline to get under the NFL’s new $102 million salary cap.

The cuts saved the Redskins more than $7 million under the cap, and all were expected. "

I don’t really get how they are going to sign anyone. From what I’ve heard they just skimmed under the cap. Someone need to keep track of their salary structure because they seem to always spend more than anyone else.

by altercall on Mar 11, 2006 6:19 PM CST reply actions

Edinger hits 75%, but he has attempted longer kicks than most K, and kicked in Chicago for most of his career. .. He now has to be considered. .. I think he is a FA, but not sure.

by Eric R on Mar 11, 2006 6:21 PM CST reply actions

Wouldn’t you like to sit on the bench with air conditioning rather than the oven of Texas Stadium?

by altercall on Mar 11, 2006 6:21 PM CST reply actions

Edinger is not a FA, per ESPN.com.

by altercall on Mar 11, 2006 6:23 PM CST reply actions

edinger was 73% last year, 25-34, 11-11 under twenty, 3-8, 30-39yrds, 8-10 40-49yrds, 3-5 50+ with 3 blocks.Thats nothing to jump at especially when the guy has 9 games in domes in his division.

by Derrick on Mar 11, 2006 6:25 PM CST reply actions

Just saw, though, he’s with the Vikings, so he might be available. He’d deffinitly be better than what we have, but I’d rather have one of the other 3.

by altercall on Mar 11, 2006 6:25 PM CST reply actions

Maybe our kicking coach can help him out, oh, thats right, WE DONT HAVE ONE. His stats are no better than cortez

by Derrick on Mar 11, 2006 6:28 PM CST reply actions

BTW, FoxSports.com has Edinger as a FA, which I thin is right. He signed a 1 year deal in Minn after he was cut by Chi. Edinger is the most accurate kicker in Chicago’s team history, for what it’s worth. At least he’s young, with a strong leg (most of his FGs have come from 40+), and he can kick in bad weather.

Any word that the Boys offered Adoyele a contract?

by lou c on Mar 11, 2006 6:40 PM CST reply actions

I’ve been out all day and am just catching up with all of today’s news. I have to say that I’m not too impressed with the signing of this guard from Detroit. It seems like we have way too many old or mediorce guards on the team. Does this spell the end for LA? If so, I don’t see this as an upgrade. Does this mean Peterman is a bust? That’s disappointing considering he was a third round pick. I’m just a little confused as to how this signing is going to make our line better this year than it was last year. Personally, I was really hoping they would draft a guard in the second round as there seems to be plenty of talent in this years draft. I guess there are just too many scenarios that can still be played out along the line, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

by Sam on Mar 11, 2006 6:49 PM CST reply actions

By the way, I love the way the Skins just keep trading away their draft picks. It’s almost like they don’t value them at all. Brandon Lloyd isn’t bad…he made some incredible catches last year and maybe a 3rd this year and a 4th next year isn’t too much to give up to get him, but it just doesn’t seem like a good strategy to continually give away all your draft picks. You never know what talent is going to drop your way in the draft; for example, the Cowboys got lucky when Witten dropped all the way to the 3rd round. I guess the Skins will never know that feeling.

by Sam on Mar 11, 2006 6:58 PM CST reply actions

how are the redskins doing it?

They have Lloyd already, and gave him a new contract with 10 million signing bonus(rumor). Now they are flying in Randle El, Andre Carter, Adam Archulata, and Todd Collins. These guys must be doing something underneath the table, and getting Arrington to give back 4.4 million, which just happens to be the exact amount needed to get under the 94.5 million cap at the time. This is crazy.

by jerryw on Mar 11, 2006 8:08 PM CST reply actions

Ezzi110, that’s an interesting point about the Skins. I agree with you, that Lavar deal sounds shady to me; I wonder if the NFL regularly checks the books and confirms those sort of things.

I live in DC and am a big time Skins hater and I am always amazed at the way the dispense their draft picks like they are worthless. Here’s an interesting analysis of their draft history in rounds 1-4 versus ours since 2002 (including this upcoming draft). I’ve boiled it down to only the remaining players on both rosters. I’ve included those players that the Skins have acquired with their draft picks (for example, obtaining Brunell for a #3 pick) and also any other additions or subtractions due to those players (for example, trading away Champ Bailey and a #2 pick to obtain Portis…you have to include the loss of Bailey in that transaction). I’m also assuming Ramsey gets trading for a #5 pick; this would then not be included in the analysis since I’m only looking at rounds 1-4. You folks be the judge as to which team has had the better strategy over the years and which team is poised to fare well in the future. First the Skins:

Ladell Betts
Derrick Dockery
Santana Moss
Mark Brunell
Clinton Portis (minus Champ Bailey)
Sean Taylor
Jason Campbell
Chris Cooley
Carlos Rodgers
Brandon Lloyd

  1. pick in 2006

Now the Cowboys:

Roy Williams
Andre Gurode
Bradie James
Jason Witten
Al Johnson
Terrance Newman
Steven Peterman
Juilius Jones
Jacob Rogers
Marion Barber
Drew Henson
Kevin Burnett
DeMarcus Ware
Marcus Spears
Chris Canty

  1. pick in 2006
  2. pick in 2006
  3. pick in 2006

Jerry, Talk to me DOG!

by gunnerklein on Mar 11, 2006 8:40 PM CST reply actions

Derrick,

If a K put the ball in the end zone on kick offs, I’ll take a 75% FG rate. Especially considering the length that he kicks ’em from and that most of his career was in THE WORST weather conditions. (Do you remember a year or so ago that the wind just blew the balls clear away from the goal posts? From like 20 yards out!!) .. Anyway booting balls deep into the end zone can be just as important as FG percentage, IMO.

by Eric R on Mar 11, 2006 8:45 PM CST reply actions

what happend to the big SCORE? this s**t is pissing me off!! both jj and his son said they were ready and waiting for FA and all we got is a guard,I DONT GET IT. I could understand getting this guy later on in FA but not the 1st guy we sign, and now that there are 2 kickers gone without us at least getting one in for an interview,i just dont get it,please tell me its going to get better,ANYONE

by manster65 on Mar 11, 2006 8:48 PM CST reply actions

EricR,
Who cares if the kicker put it in the endzone, the league changes that rule so their was run backs. I’ll take a kicker who can kick it to the ten yard line with a 5,5 second hangtime, cant get turnovers on touchbacks. I dont think the kickoffs were the big problem as the missed field goals were, so I’ll take a kicker that makes field goals at an 80% clip than a guy that kicks touchbacks.

by Derrick on Mar 11, 2006 9:05 PM CST reply actions

Nice work Sam, I can’t imagine living in DC.

Another thing that bothers me about the Redskins is how they are in love with Joe Gibbs. All I hear is that the defense is because of Williams, and now they have Saunders for the offense becuase they were terrible at times last year. What does Gibbs do now exactly?

It also appears the Skins have very few players they have developed on their own. They must spend too much time trading away their draft picks.

by Chandus on Mar 11, 2006 9:26 PM CST reply actions

Ben Leber also signed with the Vikes… Interesting to see that Dallas didn’t showed any interest even when Fujita’s making a tour.

by Chandus on Mar 11, 2006 9:33 PM CST reply actions

I think Ben Leber made up his mind of signing with the Vikings a long time ago so they just made it official today.

As for people worrying, there is nothing to worry about. So far, the team that has improved themselves in our division has been the Giants. They made a good mood in Madison, but thats it for important signings. Brandon Lloyd sounds like a head case, I read that good guys on SF like Beasley and Barlow complained about him all the time, so he can go to the Redskins all he wants.

The Eagles were supposed to be big spenders, but right now Mawae is a hot commodity so they could end up not getting a C at all.

I think that we will bring McGinest in for a interview and decide between him or Adoyele. Then I think we will snatch up Vinateiri, its time to pay big bucks for a K. Clark Judge said we were the closest to outbiding the Vikings for Longwell, so maybe JJ is hesistant to giving AK big money, but now he could be desperate.

I’m suprised at the Lions G move but really intrigued, he was listed as the #3 sleeper FA by Len Pasquolini. I think he could be a steal, but then again with that contract hes not really a steal. I think that we will take Jon Scott with our 2nd round pick now also.

this is redic. im so dissapointed in jj rite now…

all the talk…were ready …blah blah..i worked all day and came home …to another noname lineman…

the best news i got is bentley isnt in our division…

DO SOMTHING JJ!..weve waited to long for what were getting…

by IRON MAN on Mar 11, 2006 11:18 PM CST reply actions

Iron Man:

Relax, bro. Other than Bentley I haven’t seen a big name player that I wanted that has committed elsewhere, and after seeing how much the Browns had to pay for Bentley even I would not have been in favor spending that much for a Center. That is saying a lot too, because I was a big proponent of getting Bentley.

I think the big bang will likely be Vinatieri. Since the Bucs got Matt Bryant back then they are out of the Vinatieri hunt, and they were widely considered to be a suitor for him. He’s probably entertaining some final offers from the remaining teams vying for him to see how all the numbers add up. My guess is the Cowboys will sign him and Ayodele within the next few days.

If you are this bummed out now, then please don’t get your hopes up any higher for T.O., because when that doesn’t happen you will be REALLY disappointed. ;)

although i think we will land TO in the middle of the week …the big bang…will be someone else..
because TO has been trhown all over the ranch …the big bang …HAS to be vin. or maybe vand. i would much much rather not have vend. but anything is better than last year…all joking aside..i would take david beckham over cortez..lol

Ironman,

David Beckham would kick better than Cortez, though his cap number would be insane.

by Rafael Vela on Mar 12, 2006 12:48 AM CST reply actions

First off this is a great site. Nice job. Now whats going on with the hestating why didnt we jump on a kicker right away when we had more options now I think we are going to overpay. That is really the only position that worries me there is still enough players out the to fill our other needs. Bentley and Leber would have been nice but thats a steep price. I not going to panic yet there is a lot of nice players out there and a nice group of defensive players in the draft. Also I was completely against T.O. at first but I started thinking about it and you know all we will offer is a year maybe two with a bunch of stipulations in the contract so he is going to behave a perfom great for us because this is last chance at a big contract if he behaves with us. So we could use him then dump him, but T.O. I know T.O. is not going to take us to the Super Bowl but he could help.
