Youth the Constant in Cowboys Early Moves

It seems the Marco Rivera experience still smarts.

Just days after signing a major Cowboys contract last year the 33 year old guard suffered a herniated disc in his lower back. The injury was only the first of many the frustrated veteran would suffer in a frustrating 2005.

This year the Cowboys are avoiding thirtysomethings like the plague. New OL Kyle Kosier is 28. Re-signed OL Andre Gurode is 28. Prospect LB Akin Ayodele is 27. TE prospect Ryan Hannam is 26.

We'll see if youth serves as a predictor for other free agent moves.

Then Chris Hope should make sense. Ben Leber, too.

With what Chavous got in a signing bonus, I dont think we’ll be in the running for Hope, his price just went way up. Finally, we look like were into signing YOUTH over retread aging Vets, hope it continues throughout free agency.

by Derrick on Mar 11, 2006 3:40 PM CST reply actions

Akin Ayodele fell out of favor with Jack Del Rio last season. My thoughts are that he is a pretty good judge of LB talent.

Ryan Hannam is 6’2" and 248 and was third on the debth chart in Seattle last year. I hope he is not a replacement for Dan Campbell because he looks more like an H-back or fullback. Maybe BP has something up his sleeve.

These guys need to come very cheap!!!!

by bigmoney on Mar 11, 2006 3:40 PM CST reply actions

I would just like to say that if we sign Ayodele that i do believe i was the first one to speculate that we would go after him and sign him faily quick. Not trying to brag but it looks like i was right. Anyway. The way i see the signing of Kosier is that he can play RT this year while Pettiti improves. Now we might still restructure LA’s contract so that we can keep him at LG and Kosier at RT. Now next year we let him go move Kosier over to LG or RG if Rivera sucks again and put Pettiti back at RT. Or keep Kosier at RT next year and move Pettiti to LG/RG. So for this year our line could look like this.
LT-Flozell
LG-Allen
C-Gurode I think he’ll beat out Al J.
RG-Rivera
RT-Kosier
Then next year it could be.
LT-Flozell
LG-Kosier
C-If Gurode is good enough he stays
RG-Rivera
RT-Pettiti
and if Rivera sucks this year too then we cut him and let LA go next year. Next year our line could look like this if this happens.
LT-Flozell
RG-Peterman
C-Gurode
RG-Krosier
RT-Pettiti

Speaking of age…I can’t see a good Offensive player at pick 18. I can see some really good Defensive players falling but I couldnt believe for a minute an avarage O-lineman would be worth the money at 18. I hear Chad Jackson could be there but what has he done? Jerry said he would like to take an Offensive player in the first this year but who which Offensive player be worth passing on a better Defensive player?

by Cameron on Mar 11, 2006 3:40 PM CST reply actions

Unless this Hannam guy is a great blocker I dont know why we would waste money on him and his 13 total catches when we could draft a guy like Fasano or Klopestien in the 3rd round.

by lou c on Mar 11, 2006 3:42 PM CST reply actions

If Winston Justice somehow fell he would be worth a pick, but other than that theres no offensive player. Mangold, Pope, and Jackson would all be too high for 18, as would McNeil and Scott.

by lou c on Mar 11, 2006 3:44 PM CST reply actions

Where is our Kicker????

by lilbeast on Mar 11, 2006 3:45 PM CST reply actions

lou c:
I think that he could be signed to compete with Sean Ryan and Brett Pierce.

by Chandus on Mar 11, 2006 3:45 PM CST reply actions

I think the Kosier signing makes some sense if the they think they will draft a tackle pretty high this year.

That way they have an experienced guy they can put in their if Winston/McNeil/Scott isn’t ready to start on Week One.

But other than that, its only on blind faith that Kosier makes sense to me.

I think signing Gurod means were done with centers—-I am happy about this I would love for him to turn out to be a long-term starter.

I’m also a big Akin fan, as I think he can play inside or outside and we badly need experienced depth here—any you really need five goood backer to run the 3-4 well, so we should still look to add Carpenter or Lawson…hopefully.

Patience, Vinatieri, Longwell and Vanderjerk all are still in the market, as soon as one of them is signed and isn’t signed by Dallas, then you can go berserk.

by Chandus on Mar 11, 2006 3:47 PM CST reply actions

I’d be very leary of wide recievers from University of Florida, never pan out in the NFL.

by Derrick on Mar 11, 2006 3:49 PM CST reply actions

Bentley’s numbers were 6 years, 36 million, 12 million dollar signing bonus. We couldnt afford that I dont think.

by lou c on Mar 11, 2006 3:49 PM CST reply actions

Whoa! Bentley signed a $36Ms deal! Hadn’t seen that, he’s being paid top Tackle money… I don’t want a Center that bad.

by Chandus on Mar 11, 2006 3:50 PM CST reply actions

The Offense is getting OLD – Bledsoe, Keyshawn, Glenn, Allen, Rivera, & Flozell is getting up there. The jury is out on Henson, RB seems to be in a good place, WR depth is not worth noteing outside of Crayton and we all know about the O-line. Unless the Boys have a windfall between this draft and the next on O players we could be screwed.

by Cameron on Mar 11, 2006 3:51 PM CST reply actions

Has anyone noticed Washington WR spree. They are swinging a trade for Brandon Lloyd, and bringing in Randel-El. I guess Danny expects Saunders to throw it all over everybody.

by Cameron on Mar 11, 2006 3:54 PM CST reply actions

Derrick
University of Florida WR never panned out in the NFL when they were running a Steve Spurrier offense. Jackson before last year was streching the field. They ran alot of short pattern plays this year. Lots of slants which means he was willing to go down the middle for a catch. From the couple of games i saw of Florida Chad Jackson had lots of speed after the catch. He has playmaking ability after the catch and is a very precise route runner. There were lots of games that you just could believe some of the catches that he was making.

by lilbeast on Mar 11, 2006 3:56 PM CST reply actions

WOW a guy who had 19 tackles and 3 sacks last year gets a 6 year deal worth 36 million and a 10 million dollar signing bonus! Gerard Warren resigned with Denver, where did they get that kind of money?

by lou c on Mar 11, 2006 3:57 PM CST reply actions

Another FS off the market – Seattle safety Marquand Manuel reached an agreement with Green Bay on a five-year, $10 million deal that includes a $2 million signing bonus.

by Cameron on Mar 11, 2006 3:58 PM CST reply actions

I meant 42 tackles, but still, Warren isnt a top 5 DT and he gets paid like that.

by lou c on Mar 11, 2006 3:59 PM CST reply actions

Gerrard Warren is off the market. Resigned with the Broncos. Supposedly one of the highest paid DT in the game. 36 mil 10 mil in bonuses. THAT’S INSANE!!

by lilbeast on Mar 11, 2006 4:00 PM CST reply actions

Bentley now the highest paid center in Nfl hostory!

Would have been way too much for us.

by TLCM on Mar 11, 2006 4:00 PM CST reply actions

lilbeast,

I am with you. Jackson clearly did what he had to do at the combine to leave his impression on scouts as the best WR coming out. If the Boys do sign Ayodele, and finish filling the wholes on the O-line, they would be in a good position to draft the best player available, which just may be Jackson.

by Eric R on Mar 11, 2006 4:03 PM CST reply actions

Still needs to see a kicker & FS

by TLCM on Mar 11, 2006 4:06 PM CST reply actions

FS? Be wary of Woodson .. he has been quiet … Parcells has been quiet … and the Ranch is reporting a “big bang!”

by Eric R on Mar 11, 2006 4:06 PM CST reply actions

Eric R/lilbeast,

Would you rather the Cowboys take Jackson over Chad Greenway, Jimmy Williams or Manny Lawson if they fell?

by Cameron on Mar 11, 2006 4:07 PM CST reply actions

How the hell does Gerard Warren get paid like Bentley?!

by TLCM on Mar 11, 2006 4:09 PM CST reply actions

I think Dalla’s “big bang” signing will be TO !

by boysrule on Mar 11, 2006 4:15 PM CST reply actions

Dallas’s

by boysrule on Mar 11, 2006 4:15 PM CST reply actions

Cameron,

I thought Jackson’s workout at the combine was super impressive. 4.32 forty time and he was in the top 2 in most of the WR drills. He also displayed excellent hands.

Lawson looked silky smooth in the Senior Bowl and was equally impressive as Jackson at the combine. … And hey I am a defense first guy! So I would take him over Jackson, unless Key puts us in a bind.

When I watched Greenway play this year, it looked as if it were him against the offense. I mean he was everywhere. But that was only one game. Still if a player that was considered a top 10 pick fell to us with our need at SOLB, I think we have to take him.

by Eric R on Mar 11, 2006 4:17 PM CST reply actions

T.O. has not been released by Philly yet.

Hoping its Vinatieri!

by TLCM on Mar 11, 2006 4:17 PM CST reply actions

i hate to break the news but I believe T.O. will land in Dallas monday and kj wont be around to collect the millions due to him shortly

by Gaither on Mar 11, 2006 4:18 PM CST reply actions

Does anyone suscribe to the RanchReport? Is it worth a damn?

by Cameron on Mar 11, 2006 4:18 PM CST reply actions

Gerrard Warren is 325 pounds and moves the pile backward so that linebackers can make plays behind the line of scrimmage. This is what we don’t have but need desperatly.

There is one more out there. Ryan Pickett from the Rams. We need to get him signed because Bunkley will not be there at 18 and no one else has a 1st round value. Ngata is overweight and slow.

by bigmoney on Mar 11, 2006 4:20 PM CST reply actions

Chandus,

I think you are right about the Kosier signing, and we may be looking at our starting RT. If we wanted a guard to replace Allen, I think Hutchinson would have gotten a huge offer from us.

by Eric R on Mar 11, 2006 4:21 PM CST reply actions

I hope KJ is with Dallas next year. He’s been good. Don’t know if you could have him & T.O. on the same team though. And from the osund of things we probably going to get T.o.

by TLCM on Mar 11, 2006 4:21 PM CST reply actions

LB Akin Ayodele is in Dallas right now

by Gaither on Mar 11, 2006 4:22 PM CST reply actions

Eric R,
I guess Jackson scares me some since he’s had limited production. I couldn’t argue about his physical skills cause they are for real. I keep looking over the mock drafts and they project an OT at 18 which I think with as much D talent that would be on the board at that time that would be a dumb pick. Somebody good on D will be there at 18, it’s jsut a matter of who and how they stack up to Jackson.

by Cameron on Mar 11, 2006 4:24 PM CST reply actions

Hmmm… How about signing Arrington and TO? Talk about some upping the stakes in our rivalry games. Not sure I’m all for that, but it is interesting, even though Arrington said he doesnt want to come to the ’boys. I still just cant get the picture out of my head of Arrington flying over the Arizona Oline right as the ball was snapped and wrecking the QB, but that was a long time ago back at Penn State.

As for taking Jackson over Lawson, Williams or Greenway… I really want Jackson. He blew me away at the combine and at the skills challenge. I think there will be linebacker value in the second and third round. Jackson is going to be amazing in the league, and we can trade down in the first to pick him up and pick up another 3rd rounder.

by Impatient on Mar 11, 2006 4:26 PM CST reply actions

Ayodele would be a good pickup

by TLCM on Mar 11, 2006 4:27 PM CST reply actions

I think all of the pre-drafts was based upon Dallas not signing a o-lineman, now that they have I think you’ll see the “experts” change the projected player Dallas will draft.

by boysrule on Mar 11, 2006 4:29 PM CST reply actions

Arrington is notcoming to Dallas. He has already said he doesn’t want to be here. He sounds like he wants to be in NY

by TLCM on Mar 11, 2006 4:31 PM CST reply actions

If you would take Bunkley or Pickett over Ngata your crazy. Ngata will be a stud, no question about it. He is the prototypical NT, Bunkley just weighs over 300 lbs. Jamal Williams would run a 5.5+, but isnt he the best NT in the game? You cant just go by what you see at the combine, that hardly means anything.

by lou c on Mar 11, 2006 4:33 PM CST reply actions

by simmonjm on Mar 11, 2006 4:46 PM CST reply actions

Aaaaaahhhhhhh!!!

We need to come with something better than Kosier today

by TLCM on Mar 11, 2006 4:59 PM CST reply actions

EricR:
Yeah, I’m probably right, the resigning of Gurode over Hartwig also seems to signal the same, Hartwig would have been an instant upgrade at Center and Guard and would have meant that L.A. was on his way out.

Now with their signings I can see this lineup:

Adams/Petitti
Allen/Peterman
Johnson/Gurode
Rivera/Gurode
Kosier/Petitti

Add a 3rd or 4th Round pick and you would have your competition for the 9th OLineman (Columbo, Procter, Tucker and the pick).

Everything I read aboue Kosier says that he could become a solid player if allowed to settle into one position. That’s not a glowing endorsement.

We need better and we have the money, so I’m hoping for more.

by j.b. on Mar 11, 2006 5:34 PM CST reply actions

Ayodele would be a great get. He’s a perfect fit for the 3-4 and very physical against the run. Excelled as a pass rusher at Purdue but was not used in that capacity in Jax. Plus, he’s a Dallas area guy…maybe a discount. I’d compare him to Marcus Washington with the Skins.

I was warming to the idea of us drafting Manny Lawson, but I think Ayodele would close that off.

by clem98837 on Mar 11, 2006 7:13 PM CST reply actions

lilbeast:

I was also one of the first to push for Ayodele two months ago and I met with fierce resistance. Everyone was disregarding his ties to DFW and thought he was just a younger version of Singleton and not good enough in coverage. I quit mentioning him because nobody seemed to be in favor of him. My idea was to have him play ILB in Dat’s old spot because he is a great run stuffer.

I hope he does sign, I think he would help the LB corps a lot, and like I was saying months ago he is a very physical and intimidating player.
