Yeah, but I’m hearing now Indy likes his size and wants to try out the six-foot, 200-pounder in the backfield as Edge’s replacement. The Colts had the inside scoop, and apparently Cortez once played fullback in a game of 5-on-5 flag football back in the fourth grade. With the highest paid quarterback in the NFL and two of the league’s three highest paid receivers already on the roster, the cap-strapped club is ‘running’ out of options.

JJ: Either of the ‘V’ kickers would make me happy. That’s all I’m asking for…

Raf,

Thanks for giving me a smile my first few minutes at work!

superman is gonna get eaten by Manning after the first three kicks of the season. I still don’t know how he still has a neck after that Larry Allen slap….

As long as he doesn’t have a star on his helmet I’m happy

don’t know what worse for the colts,
losing E. James or J.C. as your kicker???

Congrats to Raf/Raul

Thanks for all your hard work & effort, not to mention great insight on the boys ! Keep it comin!

I would really like to rap this kicker situation up , hopefully today.

From what I understand we are among 3 teams, the others Miami & Denver in the TO circus. Personally I do not like the man , but to be fair I wasn`t crazy about the Deon signing either. I would say no but with JJ having a hand in it one never knows. I look for Dallas to keep KJ whether TO comes or not. Where for the 1.5mil owed KJ can you find a possesion receiver who can block like KJ?

by Jesse NY on Mar 14, 2006 8:22 AM CST reply actions

Raf, thanks for all the hard work. For the first time, I actually feel like I can follow the Cowboys year round.

by madcowboy on Mar 14, 2006 8:43 AM CST reply actions

Of course I want a kicker, but I want a veteran OT just as much.

I’m really hoping that we sign a guy like Fabini or Runyan. If we can do it for the right price, of course.

Also, I don’t think signing a veteran OT for a 2 or 3 year deal precludes us from drafting an OT.

by madcowboy on Mar 14, 2006 8:47 AM CST reply actions

Agreed we also need an OT. BUT , we might have one in Colombo ?
Off his injury & being out of shape we don`t know what BP does. He could have made a score with his pick up. What we do know is there is no Vinateri or Vanderjerk on the team right now. Kicker is most importanat signing as far as I am concerned. Think back to 1 year ago. Cortez & Cunduff both cost us games.

by Jesse NY on Mar 14, 2006 8:53 AM CST reply actions

I’m hopeful for Colombo too, but I wish the Coyboys would invest in a top-notch O-line coach to develop talent. The Patriot’s O-Line was much less talented than Dallas last year. They played a bunch of Undrafted free agents, but they performed much better than the boys. I’m afraid that if we don’t have a quality O-Line coach, we can’t depend on any of our young linemen developing. If that’s the case, we need to go out and get players who are already good at the position.

My wife’s not too crazy about it(ha ha)but I am eternally grateful. You’re right, the bloggers make it what it is. But you gave us the forum.thanks man.Pat yourself on the back.

Incidentally, if we dont sign a kicker soon, that Cortez thing wont be so funny.I wonder if Ayodele can kick?(ha ha )

Hey, unrelated question about the NFL draft— has anyone out there every attended Day 1? A friend and I are planning on going to root on the ’Boys and boo the Giants and I was hoping to get some advice on what time to show up to wait in line for tickets. I know they go on sale the morning of at 9 AM.

Sorry for the non-sequitir posting— Jose Cortez sucks.

New to the board – now just a few opinions. First, TO will make us a better team – a lot better. WE would have TO,Glen and Witten – now that would be hard to stop. TO would have to kiss the STAR before putting on a helmet though. Also, how about sign Brad Hopkins for a 2 year deal until one of the young guys can step up? I think we would be able to get him at a good price. I am assuming that we will futher address LB and FS in the draft (rounds 1 & 2) but I am worried about NT. I thought Jason Fegurson was somewhat of a disappointment last season. What NT is still out there?

by tyler2 on Mar 14, 2006 10:34 AM CST reply actions

The Jags signed Mike Williams, so we can forget that. I didnt want him anyway.

As for NT, I know people dont want to hear it but I really see us taking Watson, probably in the 2nd. Our scouts were all over him at the Sr Bowl. He could be a bust, or he could be a Jamaal Williams.

I think we will get Vinateiri done today. I just hope McGinest doesnt sign with CLE without having come here first, we are alot closer to a SB despite CLE’s good offseason, so hopefully he will come here to finish his career.

by lou c on Mar 14, 2006 10:46 AM CST reply actions

Today is the day that we make a decision on KJ. If we keep him on the roster past 3 pm, we pay him the million dollar bonus.

by lou c on Mar 14, 2006 10:51 AM CST reply actions

Great possesion receiver.
Not afraid to go over the middle.
Catches most of whats thrown to him.
Excellent blocking WR.

If you can find that for 1 million let me know !!!

by Jesse NY on Mar 14, 2006 10:56 AM CST reply actions

lou c:

That’s funny, you mentioned Mike Williams first and then you immediately started talking about Gabe Watson…lmao. Oh, the irony!!

There are a lot of projected 5th and 6th round big boy NT’s in this draft too. If there’s one guy who can find them, I trust Parcells to do it. Look at Canty and Ratliff from last year’s draft.

I am curious about that kid from UVA, personally. I don’t know much about him, but I’ll bet Al Groh can fill in the blanks for Parcells pretty well. All we need is a part-time space eater who can push the pocket when Fergie’s drinking Gatorade, right? I’d rather get a guy like Bullocks or Fasano over Watson in the 2nd, personally.

im goimg nuts on this kicker thing.

by bigE on Mar 14, 2006 10:58 AM CST reply actions

i dont think we’ll get rid of kj either way. he’s been great for us.

by bigE on Mar 14, 2006 11:00 AM CST reply actions

They let Vanderjagt go and kept Cortez. What does that mean? It could mean that indoors, you don’t need a special kicker. This could mean that Vanderjagt isn’t a special kicker, and has excelled due to kicking in laboratory conditions.
Vinatieri is who we want.

by joey2zs on Mar 14, 2006 11:08 AM CST reply actions

joey,
agreed, Adam V’s head and shoulders above the rest. I love that we dont throw money around like the deadskins, but here, its worth it.Add him and keep beefing up our D, and we compete for it all THIS YEAR!

by bigE on Mar 14, 2006 11:12 AM CST reply actions

There is some serious gamesmanship going on between Philadelphia and Dallas.

Even if we want to sign TO and then cut KJ, we can’t cut KJ until Philly cuts TO.

Until they cut TO, we can’t know for sure whether or not we can get him, which means we can’t afford to lose KJ.

I think Philly will hold TO until the last possible second, which will force us to eat KJ’s $1M bonus.

I hate TO, but I hate losing KJ almost as much.

bigE,
Your number 16 message.. It kind of reminds me of my message.. Remember, the one with the memo… Just kidding bro. I love my Cowboy brethren. Just couldn’t resist it, forgive me for I have sinned. I like you spend much time on this great forum and thanks God for rAf (sorry another one), Raul and everyone on this blog.

Sterling,
Thanks again for your answer to my question regarding Ayodele. I have one more for you…
Who are some of the “5th or 6th round big boy NTs” you are referring to? I’ve looked over a few draft sites and can’t find any DTs that would qualify as big nose tackles outside of Ngata and Watson. I want to read up on a few of the later round picks you think may be able to gain more weight and pan out for us because I’m not real familiar with later round prospects.

Anyone else have ideas on this?

Also, I don’t we will have the opportunity to get Watson because I think he goes to Cleveland in the second (they really only have Washington for a big body at the moment and he’s 37).

by Blitzkreig on Mar 14, 2006 12:15 PM CST reply actions

Blitzkrieg:

Well, there’s a few NT’s out there that could be picked up in the mid to late rounds. I am pretty sure that’s where Parcells found Ferguson originally. Since all he is looking for is a big space eater that will require two blockers and split time with Fergie and Pepper Jr. in the 3-4 base then I doubt he will want to spend a first day pick on one. It would be more for depth and rotational purposes. Keep in mind we run the 4-2-5 Nickel about 40% of the time too.

I was fond of Babatunde from Stanford. He looked ok in the Senior Bowl and the Combine, but I think Parcells will look further down the line. Baba is projected to be a 3rd or 4th rounder.

Eric R. has been mentioning this Fifita guy from Utah. I don’t know much about him, other than he is supposedly a big boy and played on a pretty good team.

Others on the blog have mentioned this Stanley guy from Louisville, and Jolly from Texas A&M.

I am somewhat interested in learning more about the guy from UVA who used to play with Canty. I don’t know much about him, but he could be a late rounder or rookie FA.

If Fergie wasn’t on the team and with a big contract I could see Parcells using a higher draft pick on a guy similar to (but probably not) Watson. I think Parcells is one of the best around at evaluating defensive front 7 players and getting value picks in the late rounds. That’s just my guess as to how he might choose to handle NT this year based on what he has done in the past.

titans signed WR david givens and
C kevin mawae. weren’t we interested in mawae? oh well I guess the job is Gurode’s.

Sterling,
Thanks for the info

by Blitzkreig on Mar 14, 2006 12:47 PM CST reply actions

natedgr8,

Once Gurode was signed, Mawae was out. Gurode and Johnson will battle it out again for C. The Titans lost Hartwig to Carolina yesterday and needed a C.

Indy signed Cortez based on THE LOOK he gave Romo after the missed kick, and how he took the best that Larry Allen could dish out! Oh, his kick-offs as well!

Jesse NY,
Problem was no way keyshawn was going to play for 2.5 mil when he sees antonio bryant getting $5 mil a year for 5 years.
