Is Owens Already a Cowboy?

It all apparently depends on what the meaning of "not yet" is.

CBS affiliate KLBK in Lubbock reports that Terrell Owens has signed with Dallas and will be introduced at a press conference on Monday.

The Ranch Report refutes the claim, but in the most tepid fashion, saying,

"according to two sources close to Owens, he has not yet signed a contract of any kind with the Dallas Cowboys."

That's oh, non-emphatic, shall we say?

Raf, just for arguement sake, is there a way you or someone can get us TO’s stats compared to the legendary superstars that we have had? I know these stats won’t tell what the player means to the team, but it could be fun!

ESPN claims it is a rumor. But that is how FA goes.

Guess we’ll find out Monday. I think it’s a done deal but technically he mightn’t have signed, hence the ‘not yet’. Our offence just got a whole lot better.

I’ve read that people are calling the news station and they are still holding that their story is true and someone close to the Cowboys informed them of it.

Here are the stats to compare. I was surprised. TO’s scored alot more touchdowns, but he hasn’t had a season that’s come close to Irvin’s 1991 or 1995 seasons as far as receiving yards. Not sure they will paste into this small window well.

Grantp, thank you. Those stats tell me one thing, we need another playmaker on our team. Michael’s career was cut short and I believe there has been a void ever since. Could TO be a short term fix?

Even in free agency, Terrell Owens’ situation continues to be somewhat of a saga.

Thursday night, Lubbock’s KLBK-13 CBS TV reported that the Cowboys have struck a deal with Owens. But when contacted by FOXSports.com about the report, agent Drew Rosenhaus vehemently denied that any such deal was struck.
“I heard about the report too,” Rosenhaus said. “Not true. Absolutely not true.”

Despite Rosenhaus’ denials however, a source close to Owens told FOXSports.com that the receiver has in fact agreed to a three-year deal with the Cowboys — a deal that likely won’t be announced until the weekend in order for owner Jerry Jones to be available in Dallas to properly make the announcement.

although o line is still a lil shakey..also…give me a kicker..fs and a named lb..we are set…maybe toss in another nt…unstoppable…

with the giants new debacks…without TO..we are F-ed..so everyone should be hoppin on the wagon within the next few days … GUNNER KNOWS WHATS UP…HAHA

I’d love to be scary on offense, the way TO can make it happen. We have never ever had that type of O in Big D. It would be nice to see a quick strike down the field offense; where we can play from ahead rather than behind.

Check the last posting for my humility! LOL, Look at the numbers and if you can find any articles from when he first got to Philly. Well, I will remain faithful to my position.

I didn’t want Deion, I didn’t enjoy his time here and I was happy to see him go.

I don’t want TO and I will not rejoice in his accomplishments with my team if he does come.

Tom would roll over in his grave. Oh well, it is a bygone era but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. I’ll live with it but I won’t hypocritically jump on that bandwagon simply because someone put a star on it. He might wear the colors but he will never be a Cowboy in my heart.

Wow. What a change from a couple of days ago when there were some really big time TO haters.

I’m hopeful he’ll come because I feel he can really, really help the offense – but I’m not so sure he’ll be good for the team in the long run. I’ve read Mickey Spagnola’s column over the years and he’s always said to be cautious when hoping a player changes a pattern of behavior he’s repeatedly demonstrated. But still…..the man can play.

I have a feeling his name is not the only Big Splash we’ll be seeing – I expect JJ & BP will set us up real good for the draft by still getting some quality players.

Rev. Michael, my take on it is this- If I had two choices, one to win a Superbowl with TO, or 2, to not win a superbowl, I would take one and I feel every true COWBOYS fan will feel the same. I’ve seen people post that they will no longer follow the Boys if TO is signed. In my mind, great, go follow Dannyboy and the skins.

by mgg on Mar 16, 2006 11:15 PM CST reply actions

if its is, then cool. good move, but i still would have kept Johnson, he’s a big taret over the middle.

by rwillis on Mar 16, 2006 11:18 PM CST reply actions

mgg

Hope you are not implying that I said I would give up the Boys. As many sports reporters have said…“I root for laundry!” The Cowboys will always be my team no matter what. I was tormented in high school for wearing my Cowboys garb while they were the worst team in the NFL. I stuck with them even when some jerk from Arkansas bought them and flushed our living history down the toilet. I survived one of the few coaches I can’t stand…Barry…coaching my beloved team. I enjoyed the ‘95 Championship as much as anyone no matter who wore the headset. If TO comes and leads us to a Super Bowl win I will cheer just as loud but don’t ask me to jump on his bandwagon. TO, the player, will never exist in my mind and heart as a Cowboy. He will be just like Deion…a hired mercenary.

Listen, we WILL return to the Super Bowl again with or without TO. We WILL be champs again. If TO wants to tag along for the ride…I will put up with him. But don’t expect me to cheer for him.

And again I say…Go Cowboys!

by Rev. Michael on Mar 16, 2006 11:24 PM CST reply actions

MGG,

I would probably agree with that statement, but I think what Rev. is trying to say is that he won’t cheer TO. He won’t celebrate if TO reaches any milestones like Emmitt did. He won’t debate who has the best WR in the league. He won’t celebrate the fact that TO is a Cowboy.

I think all of us here will root for the Cowboys no matter if we get TO or not. And just because something is good for the team on the field doesn’t mean that it is good for the team. This would further tarnish the image of the Cowboys that Tom and Tex worked so hard to foster. It takes us further from the “America’s Team” moniker. I will celebrate if we win a SuperBowl, but I have to feel that this would tarnish the star, if just a little bit.

by altercall on Mar 16, 2006 11:27 PM CST reply actions

One really good aspect of this is that no matter how well TO does, He’ll help jj have his breakout year this year. I think he would have had it either way, but with the added coverage on TO, jj will hit at least 12-1300 yards this year, if he stays healthy. Thats a big IF though. So far he’s 2 for 2 on injury filled seasons. Man, I sure put alot of commas in that one sentence huh?

by bigE on Mar 16, 2006 11:31 PM CST reply actions

Rev. Michael I was not referring to you what-so-ever. If you take a look at some of the TO posts the last few days, certain people said if TO was in Dallas, they would cancel there Directv and no longer follow the Boys. I questioned if tey were true fans at that point and got blasted! Unfortunatelt, in this era of free agency, you are forced to hire people for a year or two to get you over the top. JJ and BP are just playing the game within the rules that were put in place for them! I’m glad you’re a true Cowboys fan and not a fair weather fan. Believe me, I live in upstate NY and see tons of fair weather Bills fans. It makes me sick.

by bigE on Mar 16, 2006 11:44 PM CST reply actions

Of course he meant disrespect, heres the question: Has he grown up?

You can’t say its not possible, look at Allen Iverson. This guy matured beyond years now. He is a team leader, praises his teammates even though we have a bad team, doesnt bad mouth the coach and plays and practices hard. He knows hes grown now, has a family and takes care of his business. Hopefully TO could take him as an example and try to act more like AI.

by lou c on Mar 16, 2006 11:50 PM CST reply actions

I’m not saying I like the guy or forgive him for what he did. All I’m saying is that I seem to remember him apologizing for it. You have to remember that there was a time when TO didn’t think he was invincible. It may have been a ploy to not get suspended, but I THINK I remember him apologizing and saying it was a mistake. Take out of that what you will.

I think that while he’s a jerk-off, he seems to be fairly intelligent. He no doubt has learned from his mistakes like we all do. He woulnt be coming to play for big bill if he didn’t think he could be more of a team player than he has been in the past. I’m just saying, i had never heard of his apoligy. I’m sure he made one. But I’m just as sure that it was all lies. bring him on though. What a blast it will be to take an ex niner/beagle, and turn him into a success story for the boys!

by acowboy4life on Mar 17, 2006 12:14 AM CST reply actions

Perfect Owens contract would be a 3 year deal worth 25 million,1st year 670,000…2nd year 870,000…3rd year 23,460,00…..ofcourse we cut him after the second year….lol

by sharkz on Mar 17, 2006 12:16 AM CST reply actions

Cowboy 4life,
they were saying we are talking to the seahawks about their kicker. Josh Brown I think. Sounds like a very promising guy. Add him, or someone like him, and an rt, and we’re in business. With these additions, and a good draft, we could be a serious contender THIS YEAR!

by bigE on Mar 17, 2006 12:17 AM CST reply actions

Man, this is depressing. It’s hard to even type and respond to this. Having Owens on my team is gonna suck. First, you guys who are saying those of us who are thinking we might have problem with this situation aren’t “real Cowboy fans”, stuff it! Sorry, you don’t get to be president of the club, and choose who’s in or out. We can think whatever the hell we want. And if some of us won’t root for the Cowboys while Owens is (supposedly) making them more successful, that would be the opposite of a ‘fair-weather fan’, OK?
Let me try to explain the problem to you all who are suddenly so hyped about him (Wonder what the % was on that 6 months ago…..)-I think even some who don’t want him here can’t exactly articulate why. It’s NOT because he’s a jerk. I don’t care if a guy is an a**hole or not. It’s NOT because he’s self-centered-many great players have been. And it’s NOT because he danced on our star or insulted the Cowboys or whatever! I can live with that-shows competitive fire, and I’d hope he’d bring that against OUR rivals.
The reason Owens (can’t do the ‘TO’ thing) is hated is because he has made a mockery of the greatest TEAM sport invented, and made it all about himself. Charles Haley, Michael Irvin, whoever-they were all egotistical, self-centered jerks, but when they stepped on the field it was all about the game. Their teammates knew they had their backs. IF THEY (and other greats you can think of) SCREAMED AND ASKED FOR THE BALL OR YELLED AT THEIR TEAMMATE, IT WAS BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO WIN!! Owens does not care about his team, and I don’t think he cares about winning, except in how it will benefit his ability to get endorsements. He is completely disconnected from his teammates on the field, and only sees them as a means to an end. If he yells about wanting the ball, it’s not because he wants to help his team, it’s because he wants to help his stats! He is using pro football to try and create a marketable commodity, as Dennis Rodman has tried to do, and he’ll be one of those guys who will never go away after he retires. (I have no problem with Rodman, by the way-all business between the lines). It makes me sick that a team I’ve rooted for for 30+ years and can’t get out of my system is going to (possibly)contribute to his success. And in purely football terms, I’m not even sure he’ll help us-dissension in the locker room is more powerful than a few more receptions/touchdowns.
I’ll say what I said a few weeks ago and stand by it-I’d rather not win a super bowl than win one with that creep, and then have to watch him get the credit. I want my TEAM to win and my TEAM to get the credit!Seriously, the joy in watching your team win it all is the feeling of going along for the ride as they grow and overcome. If we win with Owens, it’ll just be about how HE put us over the edge. And then he’ll go about tearing our team up, and a lot of you will go with the tide against him.
And if some of you say “he’s not a real fan”-whatever-your saying that has no effect on reality. I could just as easily argue that you’re not a fan of the TEAM for wanting Owens, that you just want to go along for a ‘bandwagon’ ride and you’re really a fan of winning. I certainly won’t get into one of those idiotic arguments like a few threads back.

by larry on Mar 17, 2006 12:18 AM CST reply actions

TO began running his mouth and performing his antics way back when he began to realize early in his career that he was the 49ers “new” best receiver – not Jerry Rice or JJ Stokes. He’s been a self-promoting “I love me some me” butthead ever since.

His apologies are just more of his showmanship and are only offered to try and wiggle out of some bad spots. I don’t think the question is whether or not he’s a jerk, only if he’s learned a lesson and will work as hard at controlling his ego as he does working to be a great receiver. We probably won’t know that until the end of this season.

Dallas, or anyone else, won’t give him the contract a “team-player” type receiver with his talent would get – not even close. If he acted right throughout his career he might have become the top payed receiver in the league.

He’s going to try and prove he’s a team player this year because it’s in his best interest. But just like in Philly, after he proves his football value – he’ll want to be compensated for it. That’s when we’ll see if he’s a changed man.

by sierrareef on Mar 17, 2006 12:20 AM CST reply actions

First: Great blog. Love the debate.

But, does anyone remember 1989? JJ buys the Cowboys, fires Tom Landry and goes 1-15.

Looking back, which do you think is harder to accept: firing Tom Landry, or releasing a 2-year Cowboy and signing the best receiver in the game. Did he desecrate the star? Sure, but was it any worse than firing Landry?

Come on.

Sharkz,
that sounds good to me! I thimk he’ll get a two or three year contract with very little signing bonus, a lot of incentive stuff(ie… more money for so many catches, yards,td’s) and a clause about his behavior being grounds to void the contract. I think, however, that if he’s coming here, he and the boys think he can be a good boy. Bill doesnt put up with anywhere near the crap he’s dished out in the past. Not for anyone! Remember, kj, and bryan cox( the second biggest a-hole in nfl history) both came to bill’s team after being basically given up on by everyone else. And both were successful with him. He’s just got a way of getting respect from people who seem to have none for anyone.

Also who has the Ranch Report? It says we’re eyeing a new OLB who’s name hasn’t come up yet. I don’t subscribe, but who is it?

by gunnerklein on Mar 17, 2006 12:34 AM CST reply actions

Ryan Hannum. That’s the TE for Manyana.

Also I hear we can expect to sign that hot chick from the movie “necessary roughness” as our new Kicker.

gunnerklein:

I think the LB you’re reading about is Rocky Boiman that Rafael mentioned in his previous article.

KFFL is reporting:

Cowboys | Report – Owens agrees to three-year deal with Dallas
Thu, 16 Mar 2006 20:55:47 -0800

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, free agent WR Terrell Owens’ (Eagles) agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has denied a report from KLBK-13 CBS TV in Lubbock, Texas, that Owens has agreed to a deal with the Dallas Cowboys. While Rosenhaus is denying the report, a source close to Owens has confirmed to FOXSports.com that Owens has agreed to a three-year deal and it will not be announced until the coming days.

no update on Ryan Leaf though-
But I did hear something about a troubled RB from St Louis, Bringing back Gary Hogaboom, or Niel Lomax. Stay tuned.

w/all due respect, imho…2 words that render your argument, rather your reasoning, moot: Bill Parcells.

i’ve struggled with t.o.‘s possible signing mightily. exTREMEly disliked him as a player…but i can’t help but feel that such a strongly-voiced opinion as yours—shared with more others on this site, btw—tends to position t.o. as the whipping boy, the scapegoat, the sole symbol of the complete litany of evils that have befallen the post-landry n.f.l. i’d rather have t.o. than ray lewis on my team. anyday.

it’s not so; t.o. is a symptom, not the cancer. as another on the board said the other nite, this is america, we give people 2nd and 3rd and sometimes even 4th chances…

and i’m a 40+ years cowboy fan who attended his first c-boys games in the cotton bowl, fresh out of diapers. no one player can endanger that history…unless j.j. personally parolled chuck manson and HE suited up as free safety.:-)

THX Joe, so… I can forget about that missed opportunity too then?

So whats the bing bang going to be? OR is TO the big bang by himself?

by acowboy4life on Mar 17, 2006 12:51 AM CST reply actions

I tend to lean on the side of the REV.

We differ in some views. I appreciate the talent and the skill a T.O. would bring to Dallas it is hard for me to look at him as a player who would give his all for the organization. Unfortunately that is the day an age in which we live in. It is rare to see a player in a skilled position stay with the same team for more then 5 years especially if they are good other teams are looking to pluck them off your roster. So what is the future of football for the die hard fan? you have three choices: root for your team, root for players or both.

I choose both, I root for and against players as well as teams and since my fav. team (Cowboys) can’t keep everybody on there roster for years when good players go to their team I tend to pull for them or hope they do well (ie. Dexter Coakly) So I guess my main point is I’ve rooted against T.O and has never liked him as a person although it is well documented his work ethic in practice and the effort he brings to every game but outside of that I care very little for him. So if he comes to the Cowboys I will be torn because as much as I want him to just be a blip in the history of football his production is unmatched in today’s game. He is a difference maker and if he can impact our team in a way that can propel us to the Superbowl then I’ll be happy but I would have to route for him like I would as if he was on my fantasy team be productive get your catches score some touchdowns but don’t expect me to go running out and buy his Jersey.

Were the REV and I differ Deion Sanders changed my opinion of him when he came to Dallas and wasn’t gone after the first year. We didn’t’ hear about him beating his wife, involved in a sex tape scandal, buying cocaine, or getting shot in front of a strip club. Say what you will but Deion became a Cowboy in my eyes. He may not have become the best tackler in the game but he did what he was paid to do and he did nothing to tarnish the image of the star. So if T.O comes to Dallas and is able to stick around and be productive on and off the field for the organization then I may be able to root for him but if not then he will be tossed in the pile of the Marcus Wiley, any of the Hambrick boys, Ryan Leaf, etc… you get the point.

Anyway that’s my take I want the Cowboys to continue to Dominate but in order to dominate in today’s NFL you got to have a few guns for hire because salary cap doesn’t allow you to hold on to all of your young prospects long enough for you to get out of what you put in see Jimmy Smith, Brock Marion, Brandon Noble… you get my point.

There’s alot of Terrell Owens hater’s, nothing that him streaking down the sideline, scoring touchdown’s v.s. the Deadskins, Iggles, and Cryants will not take care of. Remember Deion Sanders!!!

We still need to get another WR, Draft or FA. We need 1-2 young WR’s. As far as TO, I just got my bill for Cowboys season tickets…with the fat discount for playoff games that never happen…Can TO change that this year

New to this website! Everyone doing O.K.?

by Coastal Madman on Mar 17, 2006 1:28 AM CST reply actions

Ok, guys, first thing first, stop saying that now that we MIGHT have Owens on our team Dallas is headed to the Super Bowl, has anyone heard about bad karma?

That’s exactly what Eagles fans where saying when they signed him and we all know how that mess ended up…

So, please, stay quiet, don’t go telling to fans of other teams that now we’re headed to the Super Bowl because Philty fans have been eating crow for some time now.

2nd, I was also opposed to the move, but I did understand that he would mean good things, in the stats department. After that’s clear, I won’t root for the guy, there’re better team players in this team for which every one of us can root for.

And last, stop mentioning the big bang! Truth might be that Jerry and Bill started blowing smoke, because they wanted to adopt a more underground type of FA, which is what we have got until now and even if Owens is signed, it’ll be in a cap friendly deal with lots of incentives, so it would still be underground.

by Chandus on Mar 17, 2006 1:59 AM CST reply actions

TO’s stats are great. Stats are the past. The Question is, will his future be one of positive production and loyal team play or divisiveness and me, me, me, self aggrandizement. I hope for the best and fear the worst. Other players have brought bad vibes, if not shame, to the Cowboys over the years. We are still Cowboy fans. I didn’t get upset over the ‘Star’ incident. I was upset that he scored at all. If TO will play for the Cowobys I am all for him. I’d of rather gone another direction but I have faith, maybe blind faith, in JJ’s and BP’s decisions. I hope they did their homework and made it clear to TO that his, and all players, demeaner and character are important to the Cowboys organization and to Cowboy fans. So, he gets the third ‘charmed’ chance. For all of us on this blog I hope it is truly charmed.

by mlf on Mar 17, 2006 7:20 AM CST reply actions

One more thing. Cowboy media coverage will be out of this world this coming season. They will be doing everything they can to instigate, if not invent, a rift between TO and anyone else. As Betty Davis said, “hold on to your seats, this could be a bumpy ride”. Apologies to Betty.

by mlf on Mar 17, 2006 7:34 AM CST reply actions

I have said before that T.O. is not my favorite player, but the Cowboys have had players that I didn’t like before. Thomas Henderson was a great player that comes to mind. I am willing to give to a chance and I believe that he thinks this might be his last one. He is 32 or 33 years old and his best days may be behind him. Someone said that Deion changed when he came to Big D and he did. I like team dedication and talent in that order. Last night on NFL Total Access they mentioned that they would not be surprised if to got a contract that had 16 roster bonuses. I worry about his influence on some of our younger players, but I also see them learning something about preparation for the game. Just the musing of a long time Cowboy fan.

by Sharpgator on Mar 17, 2006 8:22 AM CST reply actions

I used to hate Deion until he wore that star on his helmet. Anyone willing to not chear for Dallas because we are getting TO is silly. Sometims, having a hated player gives the team a chip on its shoulder to play with. I say we take him, and Runyon and make Big D Big Nasty.Remember all the good things Deion did and the rest of the league hated him but you know we all loved him.

if he helps us win, then im all for it, although, ill never like him

on another point, anybody know if its true that jacob rogers may be back next year?

by itrustintuna on Mar 17, 2006 12:28 PM CST reply actions

Rogers is reportedly supposed to be back next year competing for a spot. He looked good in training las tyear til his knee? started bothering him,and he elected to have surgery and sit out. If he is injured again I fell he should be jettisoned but maybe by not playing last year maybe he really did save himself from something serious.

Owens is supposedly getting a 3 year deal somewhere in the range of $15 mil with incentives. Dude Plays his butt off for whatever team he plays for Andy Reid is a weiner who let thing go to far before putting his foot down. Mcnabb is a momma’s boy who goes crying to the coach instead of taking care of things himself.

Bill has never been considered a weiner and Bledsoe has stood up for himself just fine. I’m with all the others who said look at KEyshawn, labeled a troublemaker until he got here, now the only team saying anything bad about him is Miami.

by shoop on Mar 17, 2006 1:08 PM CST reply actions

Itrustintuna,

That is very true. Jacob Rogers is being given another shot. Let’s hope he makes the most of it.
