Can the Newest Bad Boy Bring Back the Good Times?
The film director Roman Polanski once said of a leading lady, "there are 105 types of nuts in the world, and she's about 98 of them."
New Cowboy Terrell Owens may hit triple digits on the Polanski scale, but he's probably not the nuttiest character Jerry Jones has ever obtained. That honor would go, or at the very least be shared by DE Charles Haley. Haley, like Owens, had a reputation for being moody, self-destructive and wildly talented. Yet Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson made the volatile pass rusher the final piece to their young, emerging team and reaped three Super Bowl titles.
Haley's story explains more than anything else Jones' near obsession with obtaining Owens. The many similarities between Haley and Owens no doubt make Jerry feel he may be ready to experience Super Bowl deja vu.
Like Owens, Haley a small town boy who attended a small southern school. Haley went to James Madison, while Owens played for Tennessee-Chattanooga. Both were drafted by the 49ers machine of the '80s and '90s. Like Owens, Haley was a paranoid who never found comfort in the star-studded Niners locker room. Read Haley's All the Rage and you see a man who lived with one eye permanently looking over his shoulder; Haley divided the world into two camps -- those who were out to get him and those who were on his side.
Not surprisingly, most people in his orbit eventually drifted into the enemy side of Haley's universe. He never adapted when the Niners lost legends like Ronnie Lott and Joe Montana. He developed a feud with coach George Seifert and threw manic locker room fits after losses. (Sound like any WR you know?) He accused the team of not caring and convinced management he had gone mad when he urinated in a teammate's open car. When Dallas obtained Haley, many experts predicted the move would keep the Niners atop the NFC by holding the developing Cowboys down.
Johnson and Jones saw things differently. By the end of 1991 Dallas had a fearsome offense, with ten of the eleven Super Bowl 28 starters already in place. The holes were on defense, where a young line featuring Russell Maryland, Tony Tolbert and Tony Casillas lacked a catalyst. Dallas could not pressure teams with good lines and paid the price when the pedestrian Eric Kramer riddled the mediocre Dallas secondary in a playoff loss.
For '92, Dallas followed a simple plan. It upgraded the secondary, getting Kevin Smith, Darren Woodson and Thomas Everett. It also traded for Haley. He showed his value immediately, dominating Redskins' Pro-Bowl LT Jim Lachey in a 23-10 Monday Night opener that was the springboard for a title run.
To hear Haley tell it, the title was assured the day of the trade, when he landed at the Dallas airport and found Jones waiting to pick him up. Jerry's personal touch convinced Haley that the Dallas organization respected him and was on his side.
We saw more of that touch on display yesterday. Jones at one point talked about two parties making a committment to each other and how that "bond" transcended words on a contract. Owens, for his part, told Jones he would not let him down. He might be telling the truth this time. Owens also lives with a me-against-the-world mentality, and yesterday, his new owner showed T.O. that he too, thrives on that mind set.
Jerry's heard that he's stupid many times before. He's heard that he could never overcome firing Tom Landry. He heard his first coach mocked for trying to run a "college defense" in the NFL and got the last laugh. He's heard for the last three years that he and Bill Parcells will never co-exist. And now, he's being told that T.O. will never work.
This must feel so familiar to Jerry. It's beginning to sound like '91 and '92 all over again. He probably can't wait for Eagles games, to see T.O. go off just the way Haley used to against the Niners.
He's just nutty that way.

Agreed Raf, I cant wait either, the same way Moss rips us when we play him, I cant wait for TO to do it against the Eagles.
As for the last thread and sleepers in the draft, watch for Daniael Manning as FS in the 3rd. We talked to him alot at the combine I believe, and hes a really dangerous return man. Kevin Boothe is another one, hes a big guy from a small school but has a ton of potential. Paul McQuistan from Weber St. showed me some real good potential at T. Ingle Martin is the biggest sleeper to me, he will get a look in the 6th-7th round and make a team. Forget Marcus Vick, hes not a sleeper, everyone knows about that idiot. I hope no one takes him. And as I always say, Le Kevin Smith could be a great sleeper if his knees are truly healthy and he has a coach like BP.

Let’s not lose sight of the Fabini signing in all of this… making it three versatile lineman to go.
Jerry Jones… Ring of Honor and Hall of Fame

Raf, I sure hope you are right. TO could lead the team to multiple SB championships.
Lou c, I also really like Manning and Ingle Martin.

RAF, I HAVE GOOSE BUMPS JUST READING THOSE SIMILARITIES TO HALEY. BOTH WERE IN MY MIND, ONE OF THE TOP TWO OR THREE AT THEIR RESPECTIVE POSITIONS IN THE LEAGUE, BOTH HAD BIG ASS CHIPS ON THERE SHOULDERS, AND BOTH NEED TO PROVE THEIR PRIOR TEAM MADE A HUGE MISTAKE. IRONICALLY, IT’S GOING TO BE THE COWBOYS THAT WILL BENEFIT AGAIN! HISTORY IS REPEATING ITSELF. GRANTED, WE DON’T HAVE TROY CHUCKING THE BALL ANYMORE, NOR DO WE HAVE QUITE AS SOLID OF AN OFFENSE. I HONESTLY FEEL OUR DEFENSE, WITH ADDITIONS AT FS AND ANOTHER STUD OLB, POTENTIALLY WILL BE BETTER THAN OUR SUPERBOWL DEFENSES. I ALSO FEEL THAT THE COMPETITION, ESPECIALLY IN THE NFC, IS NOT NEARLY WHAT IT WAS IN THE EARLY 90’S. IS THERE ANY TEAM THAT SCARES YOU IN THE NFC? ME NEITHER.

I don’t think we’re at the same stage we were on 1991. We still need a FB, FS, K. We need to see how well Flozell Adams heals, and the loss of Glover and Nygen is no easy step for the D.
I think we’ll defintely be better but the competition will be tougher. Philly, NYG, and Wash will be better teams than last year. maybe Philly not as much but Giants an REdskins will be tough.

Some of us are waking up to a nightmare of Owens wearing the star. Others are pumped about his talent and don’t care what it takes to get another ring. I am not now nor do I believe I ever will be a fan of his but I am willing to wait and see with Owens. I hope for the best. I sincerely hope Owens performs (on and off the field) as Haley did for us. I also hope it brings us rings.
I am extremely disappointed in the name calling that has occurered on the last couple of threads. Debates, discussions and opinion sharing was replaced with name-calling and questioning of each other’s loyalties, sanity and scruples. I found this blog in the last year and have greatly enjoyed visiting it. I enjoy sharing my opinion and reading others’ that often contradict it. If however this cannot be done with a modicum of civility then I will no longer frequent this web page. I do realize that most of the garbage was not expressed by the “usual” bunch and I know that Raf needs growth and that means newer folks that haven’t learned the rules but my goodness…if I want that kind of behavior then I will hang out with middle school students.
On a lighter note…who is left in the free safety free agent pool?

Mantab, I still feel we will address FB, FS, and K in FA. I’m not saying we’re on that stage, but I feel the whole stage has lost a few steps. I also wasn’t talking about the NFC EAST, I’m talking about the NFC. My point, we had the NFC Superbowl representatives beat last year until the last seconds. Why not us in 2006?

Good piece. I’m not an Owens fan but I’m inclined to give him and JJ the benefit of the doubt. Let’s see where we stand in September.

Cowboysplus.com has a video of the whole press conference. Its pretty long, but yall should listen to about the 19th or 20th minute of the video. Its pretty interesting… it talks about the way jerry and bill make their free agency decisions together.

“if there a tie, I break it” that was a good line. The only part about the press conf that was bad was when Drew Rosen$hit oppened his mouth…
by ManTab on Mar 19, 2006 2:18 PM CST reply actions
How does an agent assume to break in on a team owner to provide validation to the press on the arrangement and how it was agreed upon?! That guys a jack@$$!!

ManTab,
It’s all relative. The Cowboys are not that close to being the ‘92 team but you can’t look at them in a vacuum. Neither is anybody else in the NFC. In ‘91 they were looking up at the 49ers, Redskins and a nasty Eagles D. Any three of those teams could whip last year’s Seahawks.
We’re in the salary-cap era now, so I’d say a similar leap is possible, given a good draft.
by Rafael Vela on Mar 19, 2006 2:36 PM CST reply actions
Lou, I’m glad you’re here. Here were my picks for sleepers from the last posting-I think I put them up after you left. Whatdyou think?
I just Moved from Bowling Green, Ohio and I can say for sure that Bruce Gradkowski from UT (univ. of Toledo LOL) Has the stuff it takes to lead a team-Great Sleeper. over 92000 yds/85-20 td/int ratio!!!
also on my list are:
RB Jerome Harrison
WR Marques Colston
LB Will Derting
LB Jon Alston
DT Jesse Mahelona
S Pat Watkins heâ€â"¢s my favorite. weâ€â"¢re talking only 211lbs, but at 6′5″ he has lotsa room to grow. 4.42 – 40 time. he can either shut down or get physical too.
Now Iâ€â"¢m not saying these guys are 6-7 rders, but they seem to be flying under the radar right now.
I Dunno where these guys will end up as it seems others are starting to notice them also.

if we sign coleman we will not draft a fs in the early rounds

mgg,
You can’t assume that history is repeating itself until it does. There are too many variables to say it’s going to happen again because it happened before.
That said, there are a lot of spooky similarities, no?
And what people forget is that Haley was never “tamed” in Dallas. He was just as abrasive and obnoxious as he was in San Fran. But as John Madden said, “winning is a great deodorant.”
I’ve read that Dallas was ready to cut him loose after ‘94 but couldn’t find a replacement for him. In fact, we can argue Jerry still hasn’t replaced old Chas, though I have hope for Demarcus Ware.
by Rafael Vela on Mar 19, 2006 2:40 PM CST reply actions
ware will average 10 sacks a season from here on out
by chris on Mar 19, 2006 2:43 PM CST reply actions
The question isn’t Are we as good as those teams, but are we better than anyone else right NOW? Even some of the teams out there who may be better right now will have a problem matching up with our offense (providing our line gets it this year) and with another bookend and a coverage FS they will have a hard time scoring on us there too. So it’s not just “better” that matters, but how do we match up?
by gunnerklein on Mar 19, 2006 2:44 PM CST reply actions
lets all just take a moment to pray that Bledsoe doesnt go down….cause personally im not comfortable wit the QB situation if he does
by Cuervo5012 on Mar 19, 2006 2:47 PM CST reply actions
Dont’ think so, Chris, because Romo is a better prospect and much farther along than Croyle.

MY PICKS FOR TEAMS:
NFC;
East-Dallas
South-Carolina (again :-(
North-Chi-town
West-Arizona (yes AZ-not only was I born there, but Denny Green seems to have turned that place around. Just look at the FA signings and their last few drafts-can you cover everyone on their O?
Wildcards:
Tampa Bay (atlanta finally realizes that they still suck)
St. Louis (Redskins can’t hang after being swept by Dallas-their season falls into disaray.)
Watch for-
Seatle- just having 1 Dang good RB can’t do it all (see Emmit in late ’90s)
Washington/New York
AFC;
East-Miami, QB, 2RB’s (maybe) strong line. Could be the year
West-Denver, SD takes too long training Rivers
North-Cinci, Pitt takes the post-SB dive.
South-Tennessee, They’re BAAACCKKK! Not even counting their great FA week, Just look at who theyve been picking up last year and this years Draft. Could be good.
Wildcards;
Pitt- "nough said right?
KC- Ready for a short run.
Whadya guys think?

i like romo but i think we will draft a qb because henson will get cut he doesnt pick his game up europe
by chris on Mar 19, 2006 2:59 PM CST reply actions
if croyle was 2 inches taller he would be a 1st rounder and romo will never be a starter

i dont see croyle ever developing into an nfl qb
by itrustintuna on Mar 19, 2006 3:09 PM CST reply actions
Chris, I’m kinda with itrust on this one. If Gradkowski was there cheap and late I’d go for it, but croyle is overated. Heck I’d pick up Jason White for free over Croyle.
by gunnerklein on Mar 19, 2006 3:23 PM CST reply actions
Raf, you’re definitely right. I’m jumping the gun a little. It is a lttle ironic that we’re talking about a superstar troublemaker from SF. Hey, if nothing else, it will help this great blog to become even better. Maybe we should keep an eye on SF’s draft every couple of years. You never know who may end up donning a star!

I think Bledsoe has 3 years left. Not positive though
by gunnerklein on Mar 19, 2006 3:27 PM CST reply actions
croyle was only the 6th or 7th best qb in the sec
by itrustintuna on Mar 19, 2006 3:30 PM CST reply actions
i guess im seeing something different but i think jj and bp are going to take a qb in this draft and from what if seen croyle is the best qb who will still be on the board after the 1st
by chris on Mar 19, 2006 3:30 PM CST reply actions
my vision of croyle could be skewed too, im a hog fan, and i hate bama, but croyle is a cry baby

Raf, hadn’t had a chance to intro myself to you and the rest. Been a Dallas fan since 1970 living in upstate NY. Always interesting debates with the Bills fans. Hopefully I’ll be welcomed in to this Cowboys family!
by mgg on Mar 19, 2006 3:37 PM CST reply actions
croyle has been injury prone at times and he is only about 205 pounds and should be stronger than he is, thats his only downside,a 3rd doesnt sound to bad for a guy like that
by chris on Mar 19, 2006 3:43 PM CST reply actions
I stuck my neck out three months ago and opined that Key was getting too old and that we needed a good, fast, playmaking type of WR from FA and that possibly TO was the answer…I got clobbered by the bloggers…now I want to make another unpopular point, we need a running back too…Julius Jones has either been hurt and unable or unwilling to play, his efforts last year were pathetic. Teams could almost ingnore the running threat and concentrate on Bledsoe and the receivers…part of that was due to problems wth the Offensive line but Jones did little to help himself…..I believe he never really recovered from the ankle injury he suffered about midseason but whatever the case his production was stricly mediocre. TO is going to help the running game no doubt, now we need a running game that will augment the passing game by posisng a threat when we run the ball….it ain’t Julius Jones.
by synergy on Mar 19, 2006 4:34 PM CST reply actions
More on my rant about Julius Jones……. If LenDale White was still available at the Cowboys first draft pick I would jump all over him….probably not going to happen but……..
by synergy on Mar 19, 2006 4:47 PM CST reply actions
Wow…if Bledsoe goes down we are in trouble, what insight. That statement is true for over 90% of NFL teams including last years’ Super Bowl teams.
You really think Seattle could have gone with Seneca Wallace or Pittsburgh with Charlie Batch? Personally I think Romo is as good as most backups and offers more upside.
by TL fan on Mar 19, 2006 5:09 PM CST reply actions

I’m trying to think of a play-off team with a good backup QB…Denver-Van Pelt, Washington-Ramsey, Giants-Hasselbeck, Carolina-Weinke..point is the team with the best backup QB was probably Cinn and Jon Kitna and look how HE faired in the play-offs. Bigger point here is that for most teams, including the kinda dynasty NE, you lose your starting QB and you are screwed.

Guess you EXPERTS missed the Carolina game where the Oline somehow figured out how to block and JJ rambled for 194 yds. AND he still was recovering from that ankle injury. We are fine at RB as long as the O line knows how to block.

in a way i agree but i still want to give jones the benefit of the doubt..i mean come on we had the worst o/l statistically in the league with petitti a sub par center no fb and a t/e thats had to play out of place by blocking (witten)… there was only one rb in nfl history who played well with a shi%%y line (barry sanders) however i feel with the additions we added on the line and if flo comes back healthy , not to mention jj is going into the infamous 3rd year if he cant get it together look for us to pick up somebody at that point (ther will be good rb’s available next year) but like my man burmafrd said he put up 194yds on a team with one of the best d in the league.
