Bob Stoops - Statements are smoke screens

We all know that Bob Stoops is lying in bed, unable to sleep - mind racing about the thought of coaching America's Team. He's what 46 or 47 now?  He's been in OK since 98 and he's done all you can do there right? Tell me he's not lying there in bed saying "what if" to his wife right now, imagining himself in Silver and Blue, a star over his heart, walking the field of a brand new stadium.

That press statement was meant more to take the pressure off of him and deflect the media frenzy more than it was meant to take himself out of the picture, at least not entirely. A smoke screen.

If he is sleeping right this minute, he's dreaming about what could be the biggest opportunity of his life and all the WHAT-IFs that go with it. His racing mind will wake him up over and over again, what to do about the house, the kids, his team, the AD at OSU.  He squeezes his eyes shut to keep the fantasy from creeping back in.  It never works.

Give it a week, maybe two. He'll get his recruiting done and Jerry will have exhausted his search.  By then the media storm passes over OK and Jerry finds himself determined to get what he wants.  After all, he's hooked some pretty big Fish before....  The phone rings at the Stoops residence, it's after 8 and Bob tells his wife he'll be back in an hour, he has to personally decline a job offer.

Somewhere on an empty, dark tarmac in OK, Stoops finds himself sitting in a plane across from one of the best salesmen in the business.

I'm betting the pitch will be too hard to resist.

Why would he lose sleep about the AD at OSU
He's the OU head coach.

Besides didn't JJ already go on record saying the next head coach will be from the ranks of the NFL and not another college coach?

This team is ready now, we don't want a guy that has to get acclimated to the NFL for a year or two.

I agree with winning now
But if your prospects aren't the ringers you have to have - go for the guy that can get your team there year after year.  Stoops took a struggling OU program and made it a winner after one year of work and recruiting.

He doesn't have to recruit for the Cowboys, he knows defense, he's probably a better man to evaluate college talent and he's young enough to keep the Cowboys on top for a decade.

If there's another coach with actual head coaching experience with more of a self-made resume than Bob Stoops I'd love to hear about it.

Guess you like Stoops
But I believe JJ when he says no college coaches.

As for guys in the NFL, I didn't say they had head coaching experience.

If you want a list that is more realistic:

Wade Phillips
Norv Turner
Rex Ryan
Rob Ryan
Ron Rivera

Stoops is a great college coach, just like Saban, Carroll, and Spurrier. Their success in college didn't translate well to the pro level.

I am a Stoops fan
Mickey Spags wrote about which coaches have that "aura" needed by a great coach, he listed various candidates with that open-ended question and most of those candidates fell short.  Stoops has an "Aura" about him that translates into leadership and respect.  First and foremost he's a dedicated family man, yet he gets the job done everywhere he goes. Spurrier doesn't win that last championship for the Gators without Stoops' defense.

If/when the Cowboys job comes open again and it's determined that Garret isn't ready, I really hope that Jones isn't afraid of so-called "college" coaches and simply picks the best leader for the job.

Good post
everyone else is speculating just now - why not? I agree that what JJ and others say has little reality to what they will do. If Stoops is in the sights (i.e JJ wants him) JJ will likely get him.

Very well written post, Doomsday
You paint the picture of what I'm sure actually goes on "behind the scenes" of a coaching hire.

Wouldn't that be wild if that really does happen?

Bob Stoops will not be coaching the Cowboys
He is like Jimmy Johnson, he has the best of both worlds, he drops his kids off at school and can pick them up after school because his schedule allows him too, that cant happen in the Pros, it doesn't work, ask steve Spurrier, its not a 9-5 job. Stoops is a college coach, thats what he is, thats where he'll stay.
