Fines have been issued

Roy and Terrence, getcha popcorn ready!! oops, I mean your cheque book ready

Star-divide

I mentioned earlier this week that fines were coming for the horse collar by Roy Williams and Terrence newman who lead with the crown of his helmet on the same play,

Cowboys safety Roy Williams was fined $15,000 for a horse-collar tackle in Monday's at Buffalo. Williams was not flagged for the tackle in the game, but he was penalized for a face mask on Bills running back Marshawn Lynch on the same play.

Its only a matter of time until Roy gets suspended for continuing using this technique.

Also on the play, cornerback Terence Newman was fined $5,000 for a striking Lynch with the top of his helmet.

yeah

It's been only 5 games, and he's done it twice already.  That's not good at all.

is there precedent
for suspending a player for illegal tackling?

by 325424 on Oct 12, 2007 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes - I am trying to remember

a linebacker perhaps? For illegal hits. Ah found it:

Former NFL safety Mark Carrier was repeatedly fined for helmet-to-helmet hits, and eventually was suspended for failing to comply with the rule.  Thus, it makes sense to conclude that, eventually, Williams will be suspended, too. (Profootballtalk.com)

More fines
Chad Johnson just said on Sirius that he's been fined after every single game so far, for uniform violations, and now the league has said they'll start fining the Cincy equipment manager.

I think this is the pattern that any suspension would follow: the fines will begin to be levied against the team first.

by Incredifan on Oct 12, 2007 6:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I dont get that idea

what does the equiptment manager have to do with it, Chad's uniform is hung in his locker, if he chooses not to wear it right or add lettering to his uniform or footwear, what is the equiptment manager going to do, he's one step above the towel boy.

Maybe, we should fine Jerry for the horse collars that Roy continues to do as a reminder of how dumb it was for jerry to draft him. As for making Roy stop that practice, how does fining a team do anything. Suspending the player is the only language the players will understand along with his game cheque

Roy

I think Roy's continued use of the horse-collar tackle greatly reduces his value.

When games are often won by small margins, this could cost us dearly one day.

Go Cowboys!

I hate Roy.

Just suspend him already. The dude CLEARLY isn't getting the message being sent by fines. $15,000 is NOTHING to them dudes. Suspend Roy, take away his game checks, and really send the message.

I honestly think the Boys would be better with Hamlin/Watkins playing deep anyways.

Wondering who will pay

the $11.7 million salary this year for Roy? And how much escalation is there is signing bonuses if he were cut? I really think we have to be patient with all the defense this year and see how we do by the end of the year. A new system and with Newman/Henry/Ellis missing games there needs to be time to see how it goes when they all return (I know Roy should be the key guy since he has the biggest salary).

I Don't Hate Roy

But he's clearly got his weaknesses.  His first two years, he was hitting hard enough to compensate for his coverage liabilities.  He also had the best safety in Cowboys history to cover for his mistakes.

Now, he doesn't hit nearly as often and as hard as he used to.  And his coverage liabilities and decision making haven't improved.  I'm thinking this defense would be better with just a solid strong safety paired with Hamlin.  Maybe we can pick up one on the second day of next year's draft.

For Those Who Thought the Calls

Went against Dallas Monday night, exhibit A is this play.  Williams wasn't called for a horse-collar tackle (15 yards), nor was Newman for helmet-to-helmet contact (another 15 yards).  The referee only called a five-yard facemask.

It could have easily been three penalties for 35 yards.  Referees make mistakes against both teams, and those who claim they favor or are biased against the Cowboys are only noticing the calls that go against their favorite team.

Ugh

Has this guy ever watched football?

Which Guy

I've watched almost every Cowboys game since 1970.  Have you ever made an intelligent comment?  The smartest thing in your post was the grunt, and in case you're not familiar, onomatopoeias don't count for much.

Roy haters

Congrats

Bravo, for putting down a playmaker. I'll never understand the hate for a great player on your own team.

Ok

Using the term "great" pretty loosely there.

What makes Roy...
A great player? He's terrible in coverage, he's not nearly the playmaker now that he was his first couple of years...He's a liability in the secondary. He'll continue to be a liability until Jerry puts a safety next to him that can actually cover, and Roy will be able to roam free.

by N41D on Oct 12, 2007 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

"He'll continue to be a liability until Jerry puts a safety next to him that can actually cover, and Roy will be able to roam free."

He needs the center fielder to back him up. It also doesn't help that both Newman and Henry have missed time this season. His impact plays are diminished because he's trying to do too much, to cover other guys mistakes.

That's no reason to get rid of Roy. The answer is to find the center fielder.

I'm with you Tom

so long as Roy is a Cowboy I will continue to root for him. And our run defense is pretty good this year with Roy as our SS.

You'll miss him when he's gone...

Whenever that may be.  He's NOT getting cut, so let's forget about that scenario.  He may get hurt eventually, but off the top of my head I can't remember him missing a game, despite how often he's sticking his nose in on a play.

Here's the bottom line.  Average players (which is what Watkins and Davis are, and what anyone they might get on the second day of the draft would be) miss tackles, blow coverages, and make boneheaded plays, which is what everyone seems to hate about Roy.

But what so-called "solid" players won't do is make the momentum-changing plays that Roy does.  Whatever else you want to say about the man, he has a nose for the football, and when he makes plays, they tend to be huge ones.  The pick on the goal line against Indy last year comes to mind, as well as the INT for a TD that won the game at Philly in '05, or the game-clinching INT against Carolina last year, or the way he took out Clinton Portis' legs during that seven-play goal line stand in Washington last year.

I could go on, but you get the point.

Roy-Dub can be frustrating, but to say that the defense would be better with a less-capable player in there is absurd.  The idea is to get more talented on the field, not less.

Apparently

We've touched a nerve.  No doubt Roy makes the occasional big play that gives his presence some value.  I've already agreed with that.  Where I think we disagree is that they are coming less and less frequently, when compared to how he's played his first two years, and his coverage skills and judgement in general haven't gotten any better.  It's only a matter of time before his big plays become so infrequent, they can't make up for his other liabilities.  The other problem is safety is one of the highest impact and turnover positions on the roster, particularly for someone like Williams who takes the guided missile approach to tackling.

No one was suggesting Roy be replaced with a lesser player--that's just silly.  What you don't seem to realize is that Dallas has a strong history of finding outstanding safeties in the late rounds.  Darren Woodson was a second round pick, but his sidekick during 1995-97 was the very good Brock Marion.  He was a seventh round draft pick.  Dallas' second and third best safeties ever were Charlie Waters (fourth round) and Cliff Harris (undrafted free agent).  So I couldn't disagree with you more that by drafting someone late next year, there's no chance of finding someone better.  In fact there's plenty of examples to the contrary.

by kindablue on Oct 13, 2007 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Both of you make valid points

and it is a tricky situation.  I used to love Roy but after the monday night game against the skins last year when he helped blow the game, I don't think his level of play has ever been the same.  I also don't think he will get better - if he was holding back, wouldn't this be the time to "release the hounds" so to speak?  I also don't know if Watkins is the real deal and I think JJ needs to swallow his pride and draft a safety next year in the first four rounds.  Who knows?  maybe that would be the spark Roy needs to elevate his level of play.  Believe it or not, there are players in the NFL and even on our team whose level of play drops once they get their big payday.  Here's hoping Roy's not one of them.

by Billito on Oct 13, 2007 5:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Roy...

will only return to being considered an elite-level safety when he's got a great cover-safety next to him. Hamlin has been good this year, but he isn't very apt in coverage himself.

The draft this year isn't going to be the answer...Unless Jerry is willing to take Kenny Phillips with the Browns pick, or find a way to get in position for Reggie Smith outta Oklahoma, there isn't a safety in the country other than maybe Courtney Greene from Rutgers that's worth a damn.
