Tank Johnson Character issues
Thought this was a great article:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/s...
I personally had never heard his side of the story. Basically sounds like Tank's best friend/body guard was the one who had all the problems and Tank was guilty by association. He does like his semi automatics but there are a lot of people in Texas who would agree with him on that. But, given that he's living in Dallas alone now and his friend is dead, it's hard to imagine that he will get into similar trouble. Even the shooting doesn't seem so much like it was keith davis thing where he shouldn't have been where he was - Ice Bar is a pretty popular hang out in Chicago (I've been there) and it really isn't known to be dangerous.

Good find
For many readers guns are all bad. In the West however guns are a way of life. My dad had over 100 guns in his collection ranging from antiques to deer rifles to pistols including one used by a famous outlaw. He was an Orthopedic Surgeon and dedicated his life to fixing people. He never shot at a single one and all of his guns were legal. When he passed (1972) I inherited his guns but a few years later gave them all to my brother who has no kids because my own kids were starting to walk. I have been shot at. I have been targeted by a gang of armed robbers. I understand the sense of power a gun can give a person when facing another armed person. You say let the police deal with the armed criminals. In Portland OR it takes 30-45 minutes for the police to respond to a 911 call concerning an armed suspect. That is because they want the SWAT teams to confront them. That is plenty of time to be killed and robbed while waiting.
The framers of our constitution believed in self-defense and specifically authorized bearing arms. The Supreme Court has chipped away at this concerning automatic weapons and in some cities handguns but the original intent is still there. So I do not judge Tank. He never tried to intimidate or threaten anyone with his guns. He simply failed to get a carry permit. And then did not obey a court order. I understand the court order and I understand the failure. Now perhaps he can learn to be comfortable without his guns because while he is in the NFL it is pretty clear that he will not own another one.
Sorry for the long winded comment. I do not own a gun today and am comfortable with that decision. Where I live now it does not seem necessary and for that I am thankful.
