Dallas Cowboys survive the Washington Redskins 28-23 and go to 9-1

I’m too worn out to write a proper recap right now. The Washington Redskins gave the Dallas Cowboys all they could handle but the Cowboys prevailed 28-23. Credit a stellar effort by Redskins QB Jason Campbell and some good receiving by Santana Moss and Chris Cooley for keeping it close. Campbell looks like a threat in the NFC East for years to come.

But on this day, the win belongs to Terrell Owens who put 4 TD’s on the board and carried a mistake-prone Dallas team to victory. Tony Romo was able to get the ball to an open Owens and he did the rest. The Cowboys defense left a lot to be desired and needs to take a good look at itself before this Thursday. Andre Gurode needs to work on his shotgun snaps.

But given all the nail-biting and bad play by Dallas and good play by the Redskins, the Cowboys still went to 9-1 and stayed perfect in the NFC East.

Post-game comments are welcome below.

Thanks goodness for the Romo-Owens connection

Witten definitely helped with 8 for 67, and Hurd and Crayton had two catches each, but otherwise it was all T.O. with 8/173/4 (half his catches were for TDs), without much in the way of a running game or a defense.

I am terrified of the Packers now

I don't know what was up with this Defense. But, play like ain't gonna get it done.

We won, and I feel like we lost.

Packers

are dominating more than the Boys the last two games. This week as their matchup approaches I'm sure we'll hear lots of opinions about who is best in the conference...

the defense

i think it was generally fine.  they gave up a lot of stuff underneath and it seems like they've always done that.  i think in an offense wiht moss, they were just worried about someoen getting behind them.

i mean, it looked pretty bad, but I think the problem will be corrected.

by ab03 on Nov 18, 2007 6:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

true they didn't give up any really long plays

they gave up two 32-yard plays, but most of the stuff with underneath around 10 - 15 yards, and they did manage to hold them three times to a FG. But still if you look at the total yards, they had what, 429 I think? Not good.

Very true

though the real concern is how many 3rd and longs the defense gave up. 3rd and 19, 3rd and 10, 3rd and 15 and so on. There's no way they should giving up that many 3rd and longs.

by Tristan on Nov 18, 2007 6:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yup

got to stop them and get off the field, especially on 3rd and long

shutting down the running game

the other thing they did well is to shut down the running game. Coming into the game, I though the Skins' running game was supposed to be a bigger threat, but Portis only had 36 yards with a longest carry of 6 yards, and they only had 62 rushing yards total, 18 of those by Campbell on the scramble.

Yep

I thought when you blitzed, the idea was to cover closely to set the QB up for a sack or a pick. Instead it looked like last year - two or three guys watching a Redskin make a 15 yard completion.

Packers!!!

right now I'm worried about the Jets after they beat the Steelers today, I thought they would be a walk over too but after what our defense showed today and what the Jets did to the Steelers, I'm a little worried after how we played today

Pitt is a very good team. Jets are not to be taken for granted.

But the Packers game will be one of the great matchups of the year.

Too close for comfort

I am impressed with Campbell, he looked like a seasoned vet out there. Favre might be a big problem for our beleaguered secondary in a couple weeks.

The Boys won, not by as much as I thought, but a win is a win.

I'm exhausted from watching that game also, Grizz. Too much adrenaline was released ;)

So glad the defense held at the end, great win.

btw

jets enter the game with some momentum.  pull one out against pitt, holding pitt to 13.  we have a better offense than pitt but i would be interested to know if their defense actually did play well

But I'll give the Redskins all the credit in the world. They played their butts off and nearly got us. NFC East - Toughest in NFL.

But damn, we just won three consecutive division games. It was ugly and closer than we'd like, but winning ugly is always better than losing pretty. We're 9-1!

If we win the Super Bowl, then we owe Parcells a Gatorade shower.

Roy Is Officially a Liability

What the hell happened to the player who was all over the field his first two seasons? Jay Novacek could show up out of Wyoming tomorrow and beat him day and night. His tacking is fair (he had one good one today) but is barely a part of games.

If there's an intriuging strong safety in the draft we may need to bite on him, or think about a Watkins/Hamlin safety tandem. Roy's just not worth the money they're shelling him.

by jmangell0830 on Nov 18, 2007 7:10 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

First off

welcome to that reality bandwagon, we're ffilling up fast, but I think I can make room for you on it.

We dont need to draft a stron safety next year, we have one, Hamlin, just sign him to a long term contract, move him to strong safety, either move Henry back to free safety or get watkins in there, either one of those two is a good choice and draft a corner with our cleveand pick next year. Thats what I'd do. Put Roy on the trading block, take a third or fourth for him, but get rid of him, period.

I was actually talking to some anti-Cowboy fans during the game and since it's clear we aren't going to change Roy for a different option, I pondered the possibility of changing the position name from "safety" to "liability".

I swear I love Roy and what he used to be, but to me it's becoming so bad that I'm to the point where I just can't stick up for him any more. He's just not good, at all. And believe me, that really, really pains me to say.

only one sack

Campbell had a lot of time on most plays.

They only got one sack, too, so both O-lines played well, at least on pass protection (neither team had much of a running game).

Andre Gurode

reminded me of Rube Baker, the catcher from Major League 2 during the 1st half.  The guy does everything else well but just couldnt throw the ball back to the pitcher.  Gurode, for whatever reason couldnt get the ball to Romo cleanly.  The quarterback-center exchange should never be that difficult or make me that nervous, so that better be fixed by thursday.  Great win though, I'll take a W any day against the Skins

was just hoping they wouldn't put it together this year. When you look at their roster, they have talent through out especially on offense. Maybe we can turnover that cleveland pick to 2009 draft with someone, how about Atlanta, I'd trade that pick for their second round pick in 2008 and a first round pick in 2009, if they are so inclined to trade, because I think Atlanta wil still have major issues in 2008

Roy makes $500,000+

next year he'll make somewhere around $3,500,000.  I don't think Jerry can justify paying him that.  This is his last year here.

Burt-D

by Burt D on Nov 18, 2007 7:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

only downfall

Roy just signed last year an extention, the mistake Jerry realized he made and one reason why he didn't sign Romo before he seem more of him. The big problem is that the hude signing bonus gets thrown on the cap next year, thats a killer, but I just cant see keeping Roy anymore he useless out there, where is all the pressure he was suppose to bring with this Mr Fix it defense, cant fix what cant be fixed, Roy just isn't a game changer anymore, he's just a liability.

by Deke on Nov 18, 2007 7:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No my number is correct

and the bonus money is not that big of a deal.  We paid most of his 11 million bonus money already now.

And we are 12 million under the cap, which will increase 9 million next year. so we are really 21 million under the cap.  Whatever cap hit we would take wouldn't be that significant.

Burt-D

by Burt D on Nov 18, 2007 7:49 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, you have to take into account

free agents, possible two first round picks draft money, T.O's contract is 8 mill, rememebr he has three one year deals, and possible sgning of newman to an extention in the offseason. That cap will get eatin up in a hurry.

by Deke on Nov 18, 2007 7:57 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

the 21 mil includes T.O.

We still have another year to worry about Newman.  We have a lot of cap room don't worry.

We are in a really good position with 21 mil.  At the very most we will eat up 5 mil of cap space, which will bring us down to 16 mil and that is still pretty good.

Burt-D

by Burt D on Nov 18, 2007 8:05 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, I realize that

but when you look at the cap, you have to look at players becoming free agents in two and three years down the road, Ware is going to get a boat load, Newman is getting a boat load of money, a left tackle somewhere is going to get a boat load of money, a receievr somewhere dwon the road is going to get alot of money, next year we mmight be OK in cap space but in two years, we are going to be up against it especially with all these high round picks on defense

by Deke on Nov 18, 2007 8:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Like I just said

we don't have to worry about Newman this offseason.  And even if we do signe him an extension, we can always structure his extension to fit our cap needs this year.

And Jerry's recent comments seem to indicat they might be thinking about moving Leonard Davis over to left tackle after this year.  In addition they are really high on Dough Free.  I don't think we are going to resign Flo after this year, even if he does have a fantastic year.

And like I said before 16 mil is still a lot of cap space.  Cowboys would be fine believe on that one.  This last off season we were about 20 mil under the cap if memory serves me correct and we still managed to be in great shape.

Finally, and most importantly, Roy would cost us around 5 against the cap anyhow.  Its not like we are losing anything by dropping him.

Burt-D

by Burt D on Nov 18, 2007 8:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

They

are not moving Davis to LT, not happening, never. Jerry just hinted last week about extending Flozells contract. If not, Mcquistan or Doug Free will be the starter. Doug Free was drafted just for that purpose. Mickey just commented on this last week and said Free is the front runner to take over LT in the event Flozell is not resigned. They will do whatever they can to keep Davis from moving to LT.

Flozell will be resigned to a 2 or 3 year deal from what it sounds like.

Jerry knows very little about evaluating Talent

I dare say, he's never watched the tape of Davis in Arizona thats for sure. Davis lets people get around him now inside at guard, can you imagine what kind of turnstile he'd be at tackle.
Dont listen to what Jerry says in interviews, the guy is a major double talker.

that is never happening, it completely stupid of peter King or anyone to cintinue to stat it, its not happening, Davis cant play tackle, he's a guard, period!!!!!

As far as Rot goes, I dont care what a team offers us, get rid of him, I've watched his sorry act for too long, he's horrible, and if anyone continues to back him and make pathetic excuses for him and his play, they are foolin themselves, Gamechanger, he's a game changer alright, changes it for the opposing offense every game.

Correction 15 mil under the cap

which is still pretty good.  And like I said before, by cutting Roy we recoup most of our losses by not having to pay him.  So the cap will still come out to 15 mil after we cut him.

Redskins passed the ball 55 times.

Reskins were 5 for 13 on 3rd downs.

Redskins held under 100 yards rushing. (we havent allowed a 100 yard rusher all season)

one more thing on

Spears.

3.5 sacks in 3 years.

That's not cutting it for a first round draft pick.

yeah, Spears hasn't done too much

he has played alittle better lately, but I think its only a matter of time until hatcher takes the lead role on the defensive end spot in the 3-4 scheme

Redskins knew that they couldn't run against

our defense, they had to attack us through the air to win. What really impressed me was the poise of Jason Campbell in this game, this might be the game that lanches in career as an NFL quarterback instead of a quarterback that has potential.

Speaking of old retreads in Fabini, did anyone catch the Lions/Giants game, our third round draft pick steven Petermen playing guard for the lions.

Yeah

Campbell is going to haunt the Cowboys in the coming years, much as I think Romo will haunt them. Welcome back to a meaningful rivalry...

My brother's a diehard skins fan...

... and his quote of the day was,

"It's about time Gibbs took the training wheels off of Campbell.  It's time to let him ride!!!"

There's quite a contingent of Redskins fans that I know who are tired of Joe Gibbs' conservative playcalling.

I echo everyone's sentiments here, who implied that today was Jason Campbell's coming out party!!!  As Cowboys' fans, I think it's safe to say that we dodged an arrow.

I'm just glad that we prevailed and ran our record to 9-1, 3-0 in the conference... despite our defense looking quite vulnerable and quite like last season around this same time of the year.

Just curious -- and with all seriousness -- but did Greg Ellis even play today?

"It's either hit, or be hit... It's just that physical aspect of my game that has always been with me." -- Marion Barber III

Hmm, didn't we hear alot of the same last year when Bill was here.

The pain has ended for the Bills

and for me watching this onslaught and domination.

i gave up

on the game shortly into the second half. it is just boring watching this kind of game. i'm sure for pats fans it isn't, and i wouldn't find a boys game boring no matter how much they blew someone out. but it is just no fun.

Me too

I gave up going into halftime, when the Pats were up 35-7 with like 1 minute and they're throwing deep.  God knows if they didn't the Bills would have tied it up before the half.
