Around SBN: BTB's Final Preseason NCAA Hoops Bracket

How About Them Newbies?

Obviously there were a lot of our normal play makers dishing out the now almost expected big plays, but how about those newbies??

Star-divide

  1. Isaiah Stanback looked pretty darn good out there returning those kicks. He hit the holes and seams with some major fierceness. I like!
  1. Tony Curtis made an awesome grab while leaping high and plucking that ball at a height where it was probably dunkable if he had a hoop nearby. I know he's not new to the team but this year he's certainly new to the "play making squad". I like!
  1. Ken Hamlin read McNabb perfectly as he slipped under to snatch a key interception. Good read, good cath, good return. I like!

SuperBowl or not, this team is showing something us Dallas fans haven't seen in far too long in all areas and you know what? I like!

Stanback

I'm predicting that if Phillips keeps him active to return kicks, he's going to take one back to the house before the season is over.

Yeah, I kept waiting for Tyson Thompson

to do something on returns, but it just wasn't happening.  It's kind of disappointing because I really liked the kid last year before he got hurt.  Not sure what happened while he was out, but maybe Stanback can give us some better returns.

It took me a few
to realize it was Stanback returning the kicks. At first I was like, why is MB3 returning kicks now? The kid looks great out there though.

Hamlin for All Pro team ?

that was a good investment

Hamlin is no all pro

but he has played better than I expected. In reality, he's a SS who has some coverage skills, but to me he's not a true FS.

If Watkins doesn't devleop into a better player, I think we should draft another FS, maybe in the 3-5 rd area.

No matter what happens this year

I think we need to draft a DB in the 1-3 round area. I would also like to consider free agents if any are worthy. Our depth is exposed when either Newman or Henry is out which is every year for Henry. Imagine this defense with another cover corner? I still have high hopes for Watson. The stockpiling of good corners seems wise.

What about Miles?

I was glad to see that we made a change at KR.  Thompson has simply not looked like the same player coming back from the broken ankle a year ago (no burst).

What I didn't understand is why Miles Austin didn't get a chance to return a few kicks earlier?  After all, he showed us all something when he took the kick back in the playoff game against Seattle last year.

Just glad that we made a change.  It was good to see Stanback get on the field and I'm sure that Dallas was looking for a way to get him a little action.

ok

if Watkins doesn't develop into a player then we should draft one in the 3rd-5th round, then we would be right back where we are, trying to develop another project player. Anyway, I wanna see us try some trickeration with Stanback, I mean he's a former QB, lets see what he's got. It's a damn shame Crikets out for the season, the run game will take a hit I think. And I think Hamlins pick was more McNabbs than Hamlin, but I still liked it and would like to see more.

McNabb made a horrible read

on the pick, if Hamlin wouldnt have caught it Roy Williams was in position to pick it off. McNabb really sucked last night, I wonder how long before they start giving Kolb some PT.

team

We all stay with Dallas wether they are up or down,  but this year is really a lot of fun.

I like the new guys too.  I hope Tank jumps in there and starts making plays.

Wouldn't it be great if Stanback can turn into a scary return man?

Too bad about Deon.  I thought he was coming along pretty good.

Yea I just read about Cricket

That sucks bad for a couple of reasons. With Hoyte still out we're left with . . . Well, I'm not sure what we're left with. Hoyte is the better blocker IMO but I think Cricket is a better backfield receiver and runner. We'll be alright so long as we can get Hoyte back soon.

If we're in a pinch, we may be able to put one of our TE's back there to block for running plays, but I sure don't want to see that for more than a week or two. Tony Curtis may be able to pull it off?? I really don't see any other option unless we grab another player to fill in. Bleh!

Just musing to myself

and wondering if Stanback can play FB? He can catch and has good size and speed and toughness.....

by lee3022 on Nov 5, 2007 11:07 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Wrong body type...

Stanback is too slight to play fullback.  You need a thicker body with good lower body strength for that position.  That's why Hoyte does so well. Stanback got dinged returning kicks, he'd get killed playing fullback.

Following up on one of the other posts regarding trick plays I'd like to see an end around to Stanback (or Crayton) with an option to throw. Both were QBs in college and it might catch a defense by surprise.

In order for that to work you'd have to let Stanback come in and play a few downs in place of Hurd in the 3 receiver sets so that he became someone you are used to seeing on the field.

Just an idea...

The Red Ball Express will be rolling this year!

Stanback

I agree.

I don't think Stanback has the body type for a fullack, BUT I DO like the idea of finding ways to get the ball in his hands more often.

I was hoping we would see more of him and others in garbage time of the last game.

Me too..

I was hoping since Stanback was dressed that he might get some reps at receiver late in the game.

I gotta be honest, I love Terry Glenn but I am worried that he is not going to make it back this year.  The doctors said there was no guarantee his second surgery would help him return.  He's not running yet and no one knows when he will be able to start.  Once he does start, how long is it going to take for hime to get into shape?  Suppose the worst happens and he can't make it back this year?

What's plan B?

Sam Hurd is a great special teams player but I don't think he has the speed to stretch defenses.  It appears to me he is just "occupying space", basically trying to run defenders out of an area, when we run our 3 receiver sets.  If that's all he's doing why not let Stanback run some routes and get some game experience.

Wade says Stanback is hard to cover in practice. Why not see what he can do against some "live" competition? I'd rather have a speedy decoy that might have the potential to get open than someone who Romo is probably never going to look at.

Teams are going start finding ways to double Witten and TO and you need someone else to be a legitimate threat.   Crayton had been a favorite of mine since we drafted him but he doesn't possess the speed to beat anybody deep. His best position is in the slot trying to make something out of short passes.

Let's see what Stanback can do against teams like the Redskins and the Jets.  Who knows, me might come along faster than anybody thought he would and provide another option as we head toward the playoffs...

Glenn

Having monitored Andre Johnson's knee injury this year (for fantasy reasons), I can say that he was running as of 2 weeks ago and is supposed to start after the bye week.  So, for his injury, that's 3-4 weeks between running and starting.  He is younger than Glenn so he'll recover faster and I have no idea if their injuries are comparable, but it's food for thought.  I think at this point we will be looking at Glenn coming back the last 4 weeks of the regular season or for the playoffs, if at all.  And who knows what his speed will be like, should that happen.  Thankfully Crayton has played well as the #2 for the most part and Witten is playing out of his mind.

newbies

sublimezg

I like this discussion about the newbies.

I hope you will continue the discussion about them each week.

Besides the starters, I want to hear more about these guys,  Stanback, Tank, Free, Martin, "That" McQuisten(I thought I saw him in the game late last week), Proctor,  Tyson(I thought he would come in in garbage time) Courtney Brown, Ball,

Go Cowboys!
