Roy Williams suspended

ESPN says the NFL suspended Roy Williams for one game for the horse-collar.

{UPDATE} This was the Roy Williams suspended thread, but I had a couple of things I was going to post right before I saw the Roy news.

One, Ed Werder has a double-secret source that says Romo will play this week.

A source told ESPN's Ed Werder that Romo underwent an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the injury to his right thumb. The test revealed that Romo suffered a contusion and that while it will remain painful and require time to heal, he should play Saturday night.

What about Gurode's MRI Ed?

Wade also had this to say about Terry Glenn possibly playing this week.

"Hopefully will be a nice word," Phillips said. "Hopefully he could play some, play a little more the next week and be ready to go for the playoffs."

Tim MacMahon has found the source of Tony Romo's injury.

He banged it on RG Leonard "Bigg" Davis' helmet on a 13-yard completion with 10:20 to go in the third quarter. It happened just as Romo appeared to be finding his rhythm, hitting Crayton for 41 yards on the previous play. His next pass was a flutterball that sailed way over Sam Hurd's head in the end zone.

Romo's pre-injury stats: 8-of-21 for 152 yards and two interceptions.
Post-injury: 5-of-15 for 62 and an interception.

I just heard on the "ticket" that he will miss the Carolina game and paycheck

Aha

I guess we're all on top of this. Nice work :P

by sublimezg on Dec 17, 2007 6:59 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

if he appeals it

if he appeals it can he miss the washington game instead?

i get the sense its more likely they rest people for that game....

by 325424 on Dec 17, 2007 7:03 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

After losing this game

we will probably play starters all the way through to get home field advantage.  Cowboys are wanting home field, they do not want to go to GB.

Green Bay has an easier schedule.  It is better that there is no appeal and Roy takes the suspension against the Panthers.  Actually do something for the team, instead of himself.

We have to win out the rest of the season.  We win out and GB wins out, we still have the tie-breaker in determining home field advantage.

He's an idiot.

He sucks. I know he's not going anywhere, but he is still terrible.

by N41D on Dec 17, 2007 7:13 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Roy was a ball of fire until the League outlawed

the "dreaded" horsecollar tackle.
How do we get the old Williams back?

Is anyone

really upset over Williams be suspended??

I'm not.

by Cowboys81 on Dec 17, 2007 7:49 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Davis obviously isn't as good as Roy

so this definitely hurts our defense.

In Romo we Trust

But You Said in Another Post

It was "no big deal".  So which is it?  Does it really hurt the defense or not?

by kindablue on Dec 17, 2007 8:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

both

obviously our defense won't be as good but it really doesn't matter since we're going up against Matt Moore.

I am with Terry

It hurts. Good news is that Carolina is a run-oriented team and the Bullet is a run-oriented guy.

Actually his nickname is Killa

as it is the name his teammates gave him.

I know

but my personal nickname for him is "Bullet Catcher". I never did get killa. I mean worst case, he'd be killed, not doing the killing...

by dunkman on Dec 18, 2007 5:08 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It Can't Be Both

You said it will definitely hurt us, then it won't make a difference.  The two statements are mutually exclusive:

  • If it doesn't matter, then it can't possibly hurt us.
  • If it will hurt us, then it will definitely matter.

It sounds like you're saying it won't hurt us, although you could have been more clear.  And consistent.

by kindablue on Dec 17, 2007 9:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Davis is

better on pass defense. This doesnt hurt us. I think positions will switch. Hamlin will play SS and Watkins or Brown will play FS.

by Cowboys81 on Dec 17, 2007 8:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

A CARDBOARD CUT OUT

covers better than roy. Davis is actually a slightly better proposition.

by Deke on Dec 17, 2007 8:51 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If Roy

is a better pass covering SS than Davis it isn't by much.

I'll take Davis over Roy, plus he is a better tackler.

by Cowboys81 on Dec 17, 2007 8:51 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not even close

I know Roy isn't popular but Davis is terrible in coverage.

by dunkman on Dec 17, 2007 9:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He Was Terrible as a Free Safety

But that's because he was playing out of position, with you-know-who as his sidekick at strong safety.  Hamlin's playing well enough to cover for Davis' deficiencies, and Keith's no worse than Roy.

by kindablue on Dec 17, 2007 9:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe against

Matt Moore, but not against the rest of the NFL.

by dunkman on Dec 17, 2007 9:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It's the Same

Regardless of the QB.  They're both pretty poor.

Who ever said Davis will be playing?

COURTNEY BROWN WILL SHOCK THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wrong Cowboys81

Watkins is out and Phillips isn't going to start a rookie if he doesn't have to.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Dec 17, 2007 8:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Watkins is not out

I'm not sure where you are getting your information from but Watkins hasnt been ruled out.

We need to start another anyway.

It will be Watkins with Hamlin. If not,it will be Hamlin and Brown. Nick Eatman said the same today.

by Cowboys81 on Dec 17, 2007 8:54 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Watkins is out, no way he's playing

on a sprained ankle.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Dec 17, 2007 8:57 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah and your

crystal ball told you that?

Watkins in, or out doesn't matter. Roy is out and thats the point.

We get to see Courney Brown start I think. Any alternative is better than Roy at this point.

by Cowboys81 on Dec 17, 2007 9:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I cant see Brown starting Saturday

more likely it'll be Davis starting in place of Roy.

by Deke on Dec 17, 2007 9:09 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

They want

Davis fresh on special teams.

Eatman said it's very real Brown could start.

by Cowboys81 on Dec 17, 2007 9:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

it isn't happening

Eatman is smokiin something other than Cigarettes.

I hope the cowboys aren't that dumb and going to start a rookie in Brown who was moved to free safety not strong safety from corner this year over a veteran who has actually played the position for three years because of special teams, I dont see it happening.

by Deke on Dec 17, 2007 9:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

well here is the reality

It's Davis or Brown starting if Watkins can't go.

Davis is important on special teams. Being that we may not have Watkins, a very good special teams player I think Wade wants Davis fresh. Special teams hasnt been a bright spot this season so keeping Davis fresh is very important.

by Cowboys81 on Dec 17, 2007 10:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

news flash Cowboys81

you can start and play ST in the same game. Darren Woodson used to do it all the time. This fresh argument makes no sense.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Dec 18, 2007 9:43 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

News flash Terry you

don't know what you are talking about do you?

The Cowboys could replace Williams either with Keith Davis, a fifth-year veteran with 21-career starts, or rookie Courtney Brown, who has played only special teams in six appearances. The Cowboys also must find a replacement for Williams' nickel linebacker role alongside Kevin Burnett. There are times Williams also plays deep alongside Ken Hamlin on one of the team's nickel packages.

http://www.dallascowboys.com/news.cf...

If you paid attention last year Parcells spoke about this very same subject concerning Davis, his best special teams player being fresh when he was experimenting with Watkins.

Will Brown start I don't know, but it's possible

by Cowboys81 on Dec 18, 2007 10:02 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

no, Davis will start and Brown

will come in to replace Watkins in the nickel as I stated earlier.

I think both scenarios are very real possibilitie

but I don't know how you know with such certainty.  Do you work for the Dallas Cowboys?

if Phillips said it

then you know its all smoke then, he said Ellis would be day to day and Glenn a couple of weeks in training camp, how did that work out. I dont beleive to much of what Wade Phillips says in his pressers.

Didn't he said today that he didn't know how Tony's thumb was doing today, huh, he's your starting QB, you better know!!

by Deke on Dec 17, 2007 9:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I try to like Roy

but he seems to get worse every week.  Yes he does some things good but overall seems to be on a serious decline.  If we can package him with some draft picks to move up and get an impact player, i say we go for it because after another season, nobody will want him

by Billito on Dec 17, 2007 8:46 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

If We Could Get a Fifth Round Pick for Him

I would be grateful.  He's become nearly worthless.

by kindablue on Dec 17, 2007 9:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I actually told myself I would

never reply about Roy again....but this is such an asinine statement, I cannot help myself.....the words type themselves.

This is just plain stupid. (Dave - please note: I am not calling him stupid, his rhetoric is stupid)

Worthless?!? Jeezus.....what a completely bogus and idiotic thing to say. Not worth that much money? Okay. Not worth that high of a draft pick? Okay. Worthless? Now, that's just stupid.

Seriously. There has to be some kind of moratorium on this crap.

I hear ya huslinone

But what can you do? If people want to throw around bombastic hyperbole, then that's what they'll do.

will just argue just for the sake of arguing. He's never happy. I cannot even imagine what it's like to sit and watch a game with Deke - what a downright miserable experience.

I wasn't singling out Deke

I was just noting there is a lot of displeasure with Roy around here, but I don't think he's nearly as bad as they say.

Well, I know you can't
because you have a responsibility to your readers, but I have no such dilemma.

I am not a huge fan of Burt's postings either, but at least he seems to care a little. I am not sure I have ever seen a positive post about any Cowboy from Deke.

What's the point of being a fan if you hate everyone on the team?

using no hyperbole

he is not completely worthless, but he is not a good SS, and we shouldn't be satisfied with the play Roy has been giving us over the past couple of years.  We will need to upgrade the SS position in the offseason, considering how much it is costing us to keep him over the long term, and it will only cost us 4 mil against the cap to cut him next year.

I would love to hear what you have in mind
your list of UFA safeties:

Mike Doss UFA Minnesota Vikings
Jay Bellamy UFA New Orleans Saints
Omar Stoutmire UFA Washington Redskins
Derrick Strait UFA Carolina Panthers
Gibril Wilson UFA New York Giants
William Bartee UFA Kansas City Chiefs

Maybe.....maybe.....maybe Doss, but you going to pay him + $4M, which is the cost of paying him and cutting Roy? Wouldn't you rather use that extra money and go after Marcus Trufant or, just maybe, Asante Samuel? Assuming both make it to the market.

Don't tell me you want to go into 2008 with a rookie low round pick or Watkins/Hamlin.

by huslinone on Dec 18, 2007 9:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What has Watkins done?

Did you see Watkins wave good bye to McNabb on that 25 yard run?

Hey - if it works, I'm all for it - point me toward some game tape where Watkins showed that he is the better all-around safety. I'll take a look.

by huslinone on Dec 18, 2007 10:12 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Nothing stood out to me

He's a piece of the puzzle, but I don't see anything that screams Super Bowl starter to me.

He had 3 ints

but you would rather ignore that right?

Burt-D

by Burt D on Dec 18, 2007 10:39 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Watkins ints came when it mattered

Roy has 2 ints this year and at least one of them came in garbage time, not sure about the other one.

Burt-D

by Burt D on Dec 18, 2007 12:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not ignoring anything
see - that's the difference between you and I. I like Pat Watkins - he's a player on "my" team. If he's the better option, than let's use him.

Can you name those picks? I remember one of them was against Atlanta and I seem to remember it was just a chunk up by Vick at the end of the game. Wasn't another a hail mary at the end of a game as well? I could be wrong.

Is he a better run defender than Roy? Hey - this is the "new" NFL - you have to do both right?

by huslinone on Dec 18, 2007 10:53 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

nothing more. Your opinion does not equal truth.

Nor does mine.

by huslinone on Dec 18, 2007 10:13 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

As bad as Miami is

I bet JJ could convince them to take Roy and maybe carp in a package deal.  They have so many holes that they need a lot of players, not just one stud.  Hell, I am starting to come around to Arkcowboys thinking of packaging up those two and our first round picks to get DMac.  Watching AD zip around the field for minnesota is making me jealous.

by Billito on Dec 17, 2007 8:54 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think Tim McMahon is wrong...

I also scoured the film and noticed he did hit it on Bigg's helmet, but what about this.

When Romo threw the pick into the end zone and the ball was fumbled he kind of landed on the hand while going to his knees next to Marion Barber.

The very next play he sails it over the head of MBIII in the flat. That was the first sign to me that the hand wasn't feeling right.

Go Cowboys!

Congrats to Jason Witten

Witten, who caught eight passes for 113 yards Sunday, passed Jay Novacek to become Dallas' franchise leader for receptions by a tight end (340). He also is the first Cowboys tight end to record a 1,000-yard season and the first to do so in the NFC since Mark Bavaro in 1986 (1,001 yards), reports the Dallas Morning News.

Cowboys fan since 1978.. I was 3 years old
