Schefter: Cowboys will seek compensation for Ireland
Florio from PFT, parroting what Schefter reported at the game last night:
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Cowboys plan to seek compensation from the Miami Dolphins if, as expected, former Cowboys coach and new Fins poobah Bill Parcells pursues Jeff Ireland, the V.P. of college and pro scouting in Dallas.
If Ireland is given final say over the personnel, no compensation is required. While Parcells is expected to take the position that Ireland has final say, the 'Boys apparently are prepared to believe it.
The matter most likely would be resolved by the Commissioner.
Schefter also reports that the Cowboys expect Parcells to hire a current Dallas assistant to take over the coaching duties in Miami, if/when (i.e., when) Cam Cameron gets kicked to the curb.
And Schefter says that the Cowboys expect Parcells to target some of the players he brought to Dallas. Receiver Patrick Crayton, for example, will be an unrestricted free agent.
What I read into this is that Jerry is looking for the number one overall pick. And McFadden would be nice, but having King Ireland here would be a lot better, in my mind. Plenty of teams have won with a good RB (we have that, in Barber) and a really good personell man. Lots of teams have lost with great running backs and a cruddy personell department.
On the other hand, is this a ploy by Jerry to keep Ireland here without pissing him off?
'Jeff, I would've loved to let you out of your contract to GM down there, but they just weren't willing to pay market value for you. Here, to make it up to you, let me validate your parking...'

Parcells will pay the price for Ireland
He wanted him badly as the head scout in Dallas and he needs him now in Miami. He'll pay Jerry whatever it takes to get him, either monetarily or through draft picks.
It sucks for us because Ireland is a real talent. There's no question Parcells will really raid us over the offseason.

BP
better pay and pay dearly. First, he did quit on the Cowboys, and i'm not sure if he quit after his contract was up or before...so, right there there should be some kind of compensation, i think... Also, if he really wants Ireland in a lateral move, basically, it better cost him as much as what it did for the Patriots to get that coach, which was another lateral move...

I worry that Jerry
is obsessed with McFadden, that Parcells knows it, and that he (Parcells) will exploit that obsession.

He is not obsessed with McFadden
I have never even heard him utter McFadden's name. But we can take advantage of Parcells obsession with bad linebackers (i.e. Carpenter).

FWIW
The first words out of Stephen's mouth when Cleveland offered up their '08 1st back in April was 'That could be the McFadden pick'. Then there was Jerry's comment about wanting an offensive player who could score from anywhere on the field, at any time- pretty obvious McFadden's been discussed at Valley Ranch.
But if we could get anything of value for Carp, I'd be pleased as punch. It just doesn't look like it's going to work out for him here, and that's sad.

Yeah so
First of all Stephen said that, not Jerry. Second of all he said it could be a McFadden pick, which means if it is not high enough it won't be.
Do you realize there are all sorts of explosive players in the draft besides McFadden? Chris Johnson comes to mind. Unless if the Dolphins give us there number 1 pick in the draft for Ireland I just don't see it happening.

Just sayin'
Smoke often leads to fire, and it all adds up in McFadden's direction.
For my part, I hope Jerry isn't fixated on him, but that's what I'm seeing out of it. And maybe that's a bit of the paranoia of the old Jerry coming back.
by Keynes on Dec 23, 2007 11:34 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
except there is no smoke
so are you saying that "I want an explosive offensive player in the draft" = "I want Darren McFadden". No offense or anything but that is really bad logic.

One thing is certain
Mcfadden won't be drafted #1. Miami DOES NOT need a RB. They need everything else besides a RB. Even if Miami did need a RB Parcells wouldn't take a RB that high. Parcells values draft picks and Miami needs a ton of them. Parcells will trade down from the #1 pick to acquire more.

Expletive, Expletive, Expletive!
I really hate Parcells. First he screwed over Arthur Blank, someone who has already been through a lot, so he could selfishly get a better contract with the Dolphins. Now he is going to try to screw over Jerry Jones. Hopefully Jerry won't let that happen.
by Burt D on Dec 23, 2007 11:09 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
He didn't screw anyone over
First off, Miami contacted Bill ten days before Atlanta did, Bill didn't take the job at that time because the Miami owner, Wayne Huizenga was selling the team and a new owner might want to change the whole personnal dept, thats why Bill didn't take the job, after Wayne Huizenga talked to some investers, he called bill and told him that he wouldn't sell the team for four years and that was Bill Parcells biggest concerns and why he didn't take the job. Atlanta didn't get screwed over, it was unfortunate timing, I hope that Arthur Bland signs marty Schotemheimer as his head coach, that would be a good move by the falcons.

Ahem
I think you got it mixed up. Wayne Huizenga selling the team was dependent on if he could get Parcells.
So he was selling, until he heard about Parcells. They are old pals, have homes in South Florida, play golf now and then, may even go fishing, which Huizenga was doing when he called Parcells and crashed Blank’s party.

So Parcells did screw over Blank, because he is not a good person.

NO, thats not what Mort reported
Miami contacted Bill ten days before Atlanta did, but with the team being put up for sale, bill didn't want to take the job because of what it could hold if the team was sold and what the new owner might do. I dont have it mixed up, thats what was reported.

click on right--NFL, then scroll down to, Parcells has deal in place to join Dolphins. See and hear it yourself...

Well I have another source with an alternate
explanation.

Playing off employers
So Bill Parcells played two prospective employers against each other to obtain the best possible contract for himself.
It happens every day my friend, and Parcells would have been foolish not to do it. It is called capitalism and it is the American Way. I have absolutely no problem with that.
I also have no problem with Jerry trying to fleece Parcells in the pending Ireland deal for everything he can possibly get. Memo to Big Bill: Beware the wolf. You may be the master at evaluating football talent, but this is a business deal. You are now playing on Jerry's turf and nobody plays the game of business better than Jerry Jones.

Usually the Scouting department contracts
run May to April, so I dont see Ireland going anywhere until after the draft, teams are already into getting ready for the draft, so I think this point about Ireland going to Miami as their GM wont happen until after the draft in April, if it does happen at all.
by Deke on Dec 23, 2007 11:51 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
MAYBE
Maybe Jerry could annoint him self head of football operations and name Ireland GM.
The GM cant really do anything without the owners approval anyway, this way we could essentially franchise Ireland.
The way the team is structured now we can only protect the head coach, most organizations can protect the HC and the GM...
by 325424 on Dec 23, 2007 11:55 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
No, Jerry should be listed as the owner only
He has zero ability as a GM. I dont want Jerry annoited as anything but an owner.
by Deke on Dec 23, 2007 12:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i agree
but maybe if Parcells runs the team as Football Czar or EVP of Football or whatever it would give JJ confidence he could still "be a football guy" w/out the title.
i wish JJ would never leave the owners suite, but he wants too... maybe he will realize keeping ireland is important enough to give up the title

When Cameron gets axed, he'll be back in SD.

I am not as worried as you guys
JJ has come a long way in his football dealings and as evidenced by some of the moves in Dallas, Parcells is not an mistake proof guy. Look at the crap trade that lost us S. Jax and netted us JuJo and Spears - who's to say he won't make the same kinds of blunders in Miami? Bottom line, he will go after parts of our team but JJ will make him pay and make sure we get plenty in return.

irelend
isnt going to leave for a maybe 4 year contract.. he's got it made in the shade here.. and if bill fires cam camron wade will snatch him up in a heart beat he was part of that sd 14-2 team he's from that don coryell/ norv turner/ zampieze/ garrette/ super bowl winning mentality go for the throat and dont let go till you eat the liver...miami just doesn't have any talent...s.d. went 14-2 with a rookie q.b. and a stud rb...we have a stud qb and stud rb and a stud everything...also on irelend i think wade has made some good picks in his day... this might be another minnesota-esk style raping of miami. parcells will bring in charlie wies as coach..al groh as d- cordinator and he'll leave in 3 year and we'll end up with a pot of gold... and craytons not going anywhere.. they've all seen bill's style and wades style.. bill 9-7 wade 13-2 and counting. where would you go....only older players want to play for parcells....this could be the best thing that ever happened to us...

you can't be...
...suggesting that Miami would give up the number 1 pick in the draft for the rights to a scout. Am I misinterpreting something here?

Parcells values draft picks...
...above most everything else when it comes to building a team. Picks are everything.
He's not going to go someplace where it's his responsibility to build a team and have his first move be to give away a bunch of picks to us in exchange for a guy who won't impact play for at least a couple of years.
He'll get the free agents from us that he can, but he won't trade picks. If you think he will, you weren't paying attention when he was here.
by Incredifan on Dec 23, 2007 11:24 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Different scenerio
in Miami. Parcells will trade down the first pick to acquire more. He could trade pick(s)to move around in the draft or to get a player he likes from a team.
by Cowboys81 on Dec 23, 2007 11:35 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
There is no chance...
Bill Parcells is not going to give any first day draft pick for a head scout. Now if you put Ireland, Spears, and Carpenter together....we might get something done.

we're not letting spears go ..
and thats the end of it.. hatcher cant hold that line against the run....give him his due's....
