MNF open thread
I've been lax about the MNF open threads recently and BTB resident curmudgeon Deke busted me out on it last week. So here's a MNF open thread for the Patriots/Ravens game. I'm rooting for the Ravens.

Go Ravens!

Watson drop
wow, right in the gut. Ravens hold them to 3 on the opening drive. That's a pretty good start.
by scottmaui on Dec 3, 2007 7:52 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Wow
The Pats didn't score a TD with 1st and goal. It's a miracle.

They are my favorite band also.

Grizz, why are you rooting for the Ravens?
don't you think it will be sweeter if we're the first team to knock them off in the SB?
by Terry on Dec 3, 2007 8:02 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Offense?
That was a nice stop, now can the Ravens do anything on O?
by scottmaui on Dec 3, 2007 8:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
there is no way Boller can beat the Pats
I'm sorry but that can't possibly happen.
by Terry on Dec 3, 2007 8:10 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
NIce play by Boller
it almost as if ESPN isn't giving any chance of the Ravens winning or keeping it close.
by Deke on Dec 3, 2007 8:10 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
not surprising
but everyone said the same thing about Philly last week, with a 23.5 point spread.
I think the wind could really work against Brady.
by scottmaui on Dec 3, 2007 8:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, especially if Baltimore
can run the ball all night and not turn it over, but Batimore needs sevens, not threes.
by Deke on Dec 3, 2007 8:13 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
well they just got one 7
by scottmaui on Dec 3, 2007 8:15 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Go Ravens
Beat them Pats.

I want the Cowboys to have that glory
by Terry on Dec 3, 2007 8:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I know what you mean
And as long as the Pats keep winning, I'll be glad for the Boys to have the chance to be the one to knock them off in the SB, but meanwhile it is just a gut reaction to go for the underdog. And I wouldn't mind the Boys sharing the best record in the league.
(Plus my sister and her family live in Baltimore and are Raven's fans, so there's that, too, but I also went to college in Boston and have good friends who are Pats fans, so that kind of cancels out.)

I missed the pre-game
Why is it Led Zep night on MNF? Is it because of their reunion concert?
by Dave Halprin on Dec 3, 2007 8:37 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
yeah, they just released "Mothership"
so it is a promotional thing
by scottmaui on Dec 3, 2007 8:39 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
here we go again
but maybe it's mind games. Maybe Belichick and co. want everyone to think they're in trouble. Maybe they're trying to psyhe everyone ou with Jedi Mind Tricks. And just when the opponent's team think they're on the verge of victory, the Patriots wake up and snatch the win right out of their fingers. I mean, that exact scenario has already happened to the Colts and Eagles.
Of course, maybe I'm just paranoid.

i'm gonna dance like this fat guy dancing to Karn Evil 9 on this dr. pepper commercial if the pats lose....god i hate the constantly sloppy wet kisses the media gives them every week for running up the score...would love if the Ravens stole their lunch money....and i would love if mcgahee and ray lewis, two players from the U, dedicated the victory to sean taylor...but i get the feeling we're only making tom brady and cowboy killer (randy moss) mad....

The Patriots look to have peaked early. Not to say I told you so or anything, but a few weeks ago I mentioned their performance was not sustainable.

The Ravens are having their biggest game of the season the same day that McNair was put on injured reserve. Of course, there's still a quarter left to play, but that teams hasn't looked this good since 2006.

at least talked about the POSSIBILITY that defensive hold was a bad call...
by Tuna Helper on Dec 3, 2007 10:45 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think most of these calls are ticky tack
The defensive backs have no chance, the rules are so schewed towards the offense, its just rediculous. The league wants high scoring, so its not going to change
by Deke on Dec 3, 2007 10:48 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Got to be so frustrating for the players
to have that 4th down stop nullified by the TO, so they play their hearts out and the sidelines call loses the game for them
by scottmaui on Dec 3, 2007 10:48 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
why didn't Boller throw that in the endzone?

he was lucky to get it that far, it went 60 yards
by Deke on Dec 3, 2007 10:58 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs

that's why the the MN guys were saying how the flags hurt the Ravens at the end because NE would have kicked into the wind there...

Overall, a great game
too bad for the Ravens, they played a great game, that boller int when they were deep in patriots zone, cost them three points, that atleast cost them over time

another loss due to bad coaching. these guys write up great schemes but when it comes to game management, these old guys flat out blow.
screen pass on 3rd and 1, not blitzing at all on the last drive. players have a right to be angry. another sean taylor tribute ruined by the old guys

by Longhorn on Dec 3, 2007 10:58 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Jaws, I think, was saying at the end
that if they were going to lose any game this would be it. Yeah, you can say that given the situation in the fourth quarter, but that is two weeks in a row that the Pats have barely pulled out a win against very so-so teams, teams without winning records. Huge underdogs almost took them down.
If you just saw the last two games, you would think they are a scrappy team that fights until the end and pulls out wins, but you wouldn't think they are a massively dominating team, "the best team ever" in the NFL.
They are definitely beatable. They could easily lose to the Steelers next week, or the Giants. And even if they manage to make it through the season without choking, they could definitely get taken out in the playoffs.
And another thing - look at trends. The Patriots are actually struggling to win against much inferior teams. They are trending down.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys are getting better and better every game.
If the Pats make it to the SB, the Cowboys will take them down.
by scottmaui on Dec 3, 2007 11:02 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I dont buy into that so much
When a team like the Patriots are going on the run they're on, its hard to stay that focused week in and week out especially in a long season like football. Its the games in a streak like this around the two thirds mark of the season that are the toughest ones to win, its that lull part of the season just before you start to crank it up and make that playoff run. Next week the Patriots could very well come out and put fifty on the board. I dont think they peaked too early, I just think its that hump you have to fight through before you again refocus in on the big prize, as it comes closer into view.
by Deke on Dec 3, 2007 11:11 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Somehow I'm not surprised
You don't buy into it... I'm intentionally looking at it from an optimistic point of view for the Cowboys, which I know is not your style ;-} But I'm just saying they are not unbeatable. And the air of them being the best team ever seems at least questionable now. They are a very, very good team, and what you're saying is true. But they were making some big mistakes both this week and last. And if we end up facing them in the SB, the way things are going at this point I feel pretty darn confident about our chances.
by scottmaui on Dec 3, 2007 11:17 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Great teams though overcome their mistakes
When most of the league loses or wins games based on the two or three mistakes either one way or another, the patriots can over come mistakes every week if they are negative towards them, thats what a great team does, The cowboys did that in Buffalo, not blowing out teams that you should beat doesn't take away from their greatness IMO, teams go through lulls in a season, its a long season, we beat the Colts last year at the same time of the year, they went on to win the superbowl. I think the cowboys are a very very good and upcoming team, a team thats closing in on the patriots level but you cannot overlook our one glaring problem, and thats the secondary. The cowboys are good enough now on offense to overcome their inabilities on defense, thats not taking anything away or being negative about the team, its just a fact. I would be very careful about putting the Cowboys in the superbowl right now as so many do, Green bay, if healthy is going to be a big problem for Dallas because of what they can do on and what they have on offense, but I do like our chances. I dont think Green bay would be intimidated though if they have to play in dallas again. I dont like our matchup against the Patriots at this point because of our secondary issues, we aren't playing them at this point though, so things can change for both teams. I just dont sit and watch cowboy games, any games with pom poms. or starting going on about Romo being the greatest of all time in three years as was typed here today, thats just rediculous.
by Deke on Dec 3, 2007 11:46 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I take that back
Romo IS the greatest of all time. Montana, Unitas, and the rest have nothing on Romo.
And secondly I hate that cliche "Great teams overcome there mistakes". That phrase is used by people to justify injustice. Its like people saying bad things don't happen to good people. How many times can any team stop a conversion on a 4th down. At a certain point it is not statistically feasible to expect any team to stop a conversion after stopping a conversion a certain number of times. You guys have to be realistic. Even the "great" Patriots would not be able to stop a conversion on so many consecutive attempts, it is just not realistic.
