Oops...Cleveland pick NOT # 20
Seeing several web sits listing Cleveland at a later pick then 20 got me to looking at the rules again (see below).
Then checked last years draft order. The same thing happened last year.
Denver finished 9-7 but didn't make the playoffs. New York did make the playoffs at 8-8. Since the Giants didn't advance to the Superbowl, they went to the draft spot (20) behind the other 8-8 clubs. Denver went to the top of the 9-7 clubs (21). The remaining 9-7 clubs were slotted in draft order based on when they exited the playoffs. Dallas and KC drafted ahead of Seattle because they exited the playoffs the first round. Seattle drafted last of the 9-7 clubs because they advance to the divisional rounds (even though they had a much lower Strength of Schedule then the other 9-7 teams).
From NFL.com
http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebrea...
the last paragraph:
TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION MEETING
If two or more clubs are tied in the selection order, the strength-of-schedule tie breaker is applied, subject to the following exceptions for playoff clubs:
- The Super Bowl winner is last and the Super Bowl loser next-to-last.
- Any non-Super Bowl playoff club involved in a tie shall be assigned priority within its segment below that of non-playoff clubs and in the order that the playoff clubs exited from the playoffs. Thus, within a tied segment a playoff club that loses in the Wild-Card game will have priority over a playoff club that loses in the Divisional playoff game, which in turn will have priority over a club that loses in the Conference Championship game. If two tied clubs exited the playoffs in the same round, the tie is broken by strength of schedule.
If any ties cannot be broken by strength of schedule, the divisional or conference tie breakers, whichever are applicable, are applied. Any ties that still exist are broken by a coin flip.
What this means for the Cleveland pick:
Unless Tampa Bay or Washington advance to the Super Bowl, they will be slotted ahead of Cleveland in the 2008 Draft Order. Assuming neither advance to the Superbowl, the Cleveland pick will be #22.
How ironic!

yes, I forgot about that nonsense rule
and I thought there was talk about changing that, Why the league doesn't change that is beyond me, if you make it to the playoffs, you should start slotting losing playoff teams at 21 on and not giving teams that make the playoffs over a non playoff team a better draft pick. If we end up slotted at 22, lets get out of that spot, it hasn't been good to us.
yeah, trade it for another 1st rd pick next year
as I hear the 2009 draft is really going to be loaded if a lot of these juniors don't come out.
thats why I keep
saying Jerry will trade down both pick if he doesn't package them. The value, for what we need is not very good mid first round. If the DMAC scenerio doesn't happen than Jerry could take Felix Jones who will be anywhere from a 20 to 28 pick in the first round.

Dallas isn't trading down
this roster is getting deeper and there isn't alot of positions for all the draft picks to even make the team. We might trade a pick for next year, but I see dallas moving up for a change in this draft to get the player they target, and I'm not talking about McFadden, if thats what you think..
Jerry trades
down every draft. So what makes you think he won't this time? If we have the 28th, 29th, etc., pick in the first I bet you my pay check Jerry trades that pick down. He will also trade down the 22nd pick if he can't get the RB he wants. The only way Jerry moves up is if he packages both picks, that's it. Like I said, CB and WR are weak in the first round, especially where our picks will fall. We are better off trading down both picks to get an additional second or third round pick. The value is alot better in those rounds.

when your team has lots of holes
then it akes sense for you to trade down, but when you dont have aot of holes, you can take the chance and move on a player you really like. I believe dallas will move up in the first for a player they like.
Leodis McKelvin anyone?
This kid is shooting up the charts the same way Ware did in 2005, ironically from the same school.
He could fill both our CB and returner needs in one pick.
I like him with our
first round pick. I wouldnt take him at 22.
by Cowboys81 on Dec 31, 2007 3:19 PM CST up reply actions
you say that now and it true
he's currently a high 2nd, low 1st rd pick, but after the senior bowl and combine, you might be tooting a different tune.
this could be true
right now Felix Jones is anywhere from the 22nd pick to the top of the first round, but that could change depending on what happens at the combine.
by Cowboys81 on Dec 31, 2007 3:24 PM CST up reply actions
He's a late first round pick
more of a early second rounder, I'd be very careful of players that shoot up draft boards late, usually they turn out to be a mirage.
Deke's got a man crush....lol
DMac is the best all around back in the draft, according to the experts and Ark....lol...
Stewart is good, and I wouldn't be upset if we get him, I have a feeling he'll be gone by pick 22... I feel IMO Felix Jones is the better fit here in Dallas. Stewart is more of a north/south runner, as Jones can stretch the D,counter draws, cut backs will leave lineman grasping for air,and he will blow away linebackers on the outside toss plays, screens, and reverses. As a bonus, He can return kicks like nobody else in college.

I agree Terry...
I like this kid alot....as I also like Felix Jones...Both players are in need areas, and are terrific return men, which fills another need.
Miles Austin did not help his chances of being on this team next year, with his poor performance against Washington, IMO
If we come out of the first day of the draft next year with these two players...I'd call it a big success.
by BoyzRback07 on Dec 31, 2007 3:30 PM CST up reply actions
are you crazy
this team does not have alot of holes. The ones that is does can be addressed in FA.
We need a RB, and a good veteran CB that's it. We have plenty of depth at OL and the DL. We have young receivers in Hurd, Crayton and Austin. I would like us to go into FA and get another.
by Cowboys81 on Dec 31, 2007 3:16 PM CST up reply actions
thats exactly what Deke said
we don't have a lot of holes so trading up for a targeted player makes sense.
ok, my bad I missed that
I do agree in part Jerry will try and trade up, but only for one player and you know who that it. Otherwise, I think he will stay with the 22nd and take Felix Jones and trade down our first to get a higher second round pick. As it stands, our second is very late in the round.

umm....but....they are coming out.
The 2009 draft is being considered by many scouting services to be one of the weakest drafts in many years....We NEED to our work done in THIS draft...period...not by trading down, or out of the first, but by TRADING UP with Both #1's... say like the 22nd pick and a 4th/5th rounder to get in the 14-18 range. then trade our #1(31) and maybe a 5th/ 6th and/or 7th to get up in the 20-24 range to assure two top talents from THIS draft.....
The success of this upcoming draft will have a big impression on this team for many years to come.We will be picking in the 26 to 32 range for at least the next 5 years. We are no longer in a position of quantity..5th,6th,7th round picks will be very hard pressed to even make our team for many years to come, so we should be dealing heavily this year going UP in the draft....not trading down, or out of early rounds...It's all about Quality. Which especially means keeping our two tops choices...
by BoyzRback07 on Dec 31, 2007 3:21 PM CST up reply actions
I agree
Picking up extra picks in the 5th round is a great strategy if you're 5-11. At 13-3, you've got fewer needs and you're pickier about how you fill them.
I'd love to see them trade up for a top CB (either McKelvey or the stud from South Florida (he's in my own backyard and I can't remember his name!) and either a WR or RB.
lol...my backyard too...
Mike Jenkins...South Florida
McKelvin.......Troy
I don't know alot about McKelvin, but I'm looking forward to watching All star bowl games and scouting combines.
I'm starting to sour on Jenkins, I keep hearing about his reluctant approach to the run defense, even though the few games I watched he seemed to be an alright tackler.I'm kinda watching him right now, they are playing in bowl today...should be watching it better cuz Stewart or Oregon is going off on a very good South Florida defense....lol....Maybe Deke is right....Johnathan Stewart lighting it up...186 yards rushing, early in the third quarter..

The kid can play BoyzRback
the kid can play, I think he's the next LT..
I have him slated for Houston at 18
got to get ahead of houston to nab him, I think seattle will gun for him too.
I like your optimism
The Cowboys pick #31 in your post. The Super Bowl Winner picks last, but New England lost their first round pick due to spygate, so there are only 31 picks in this draft, which means the Cowboys beat down the Pats in the Super Bowl.
no #31
would be the other super bowl team(assuming the pats make it)since the pats don't have one.if NE doesn't make it then #31 would be the SB winner
That's lame.

So how do this ?
OK so we pick up CB at #22 - then a WR at #30 something
then we do you make room for a RB ? the stronrest in years ?
what round 2
Felix Jones won't be there - then who you got ????
Jones at 22 and we might have to trade up to get him
no I trade picks and players
to get Dmac
1b OT - Jeff Otah, 6-6 #340 Pittsburgh
OT Gosder Cherilus 6- 7 #320 BC
2 CB Dwight Lowery – 6- 1 #190 San Jose St
CB Terrell Thomas 6-1 #200 USC
3 WR Steve Johnson 6-3 #200 Kentucky - ]
catches everything
WR Lavelle Hawkins 6-2 #190 Cal - Speed guy

first pick--Jonathan stewart
trade up, give up the third to get ahead of houston at 18, take a corner with our second first round pick, then take a receiver in the second round.
Size or Speed
It takes a year or two for a WR to make an impact.
That said, you want to make sure the players you draft bring something to the table besides college greatness. Either you get the fastest SOB out there. Or you get the biggest.
This way, you can use them uniquely in your offense.
Good receivers are a dime a dozen. Look for something unique.
My two cents.
Free Agent WR
Agree, usually 1 or 2 years before WR's become productive.
If the Cowboys have enough CAP money, I would target Bernard Berrian of the Bears. Great Speed. Stats would be much better if Chicago had a QB.
Then, as Deke points out, you can afford to give up the 3rd round pick to move up in the first for a special player, and still have the late first and second for other needs.
I would like two CB's on the first day.
I agree 100%
That is exactly how I project us succeeding...
1)Felix Jones-RB
1)Leodis McKelvin-CB
2)Domonique Rodgers-Cromarte-CB
3)Owen Schmitt-FB
FA: B Berrian,A Davis,B Johnson,...
lol...how bout this... Randy Moss will be a free agent, Jerry finally gets the guy he should have taken in 1998.
also Row Williams of Detroit, and Chad Johnson of Cincy could be had in a trade.
We should not waste a high round draft pick on a class of mediocre college WR's.
by BoyzRback07 on Dec 31, 2007 4:55 PM CST up reply actions
New England won't let Moss go
even if they have to abandon their strategy of not paying too much for one player.
Roy Williams II and Chad Johnson? Who knows.

Bernard Bernard
would be an excellent choice and I was thinking about him last night when I was going through the FA list. He would be an excellent WR to go along with TO. I like Crayton, but he is not a #2 receiver. We need another threat that can stretch the field.
by Cowboys81 on Dec 31, 2007 5:22 PM CST up reply actions
I agree...Cowboys81
And I think we can get him at a fair price...Who wouldn't take a little less to come to a SB contender like the Cowboys.
by BoyzRback07 on Dec 31, 2007 5:34 PM CST up reply actions
we cant afford to sign another
elite cornerback, we'll address that through the draft, Newmans going to break the bank next year.
what makes you think
Newman will be resigned? He will be 30 next year. Jerry might go in a different direction you never know. I tell you this, He won't get a huge contract because of his age.
We can afford an elite CB like Samuel if we want. Give a huge signing bonus to keep the base salary low.
Those FA CB's I listed will not get a Nate Clements contract. They are second tier players who are affordable.
by Cowboys81 on Dec 31, 2007 9:01 PM CST up reply actions
I agree raysheff
There is only one WR in this entire draft that I think is worthy of a top pick- Desean Jackson. Lightening speed, great route runner, and exceptional return abilities. If we can somehow get ahead of Philly in the upcoming draft, we take him.
Otherwise I wouldn't even think WR till the 3rd or 4th round...There is no clear cut outstanding WR in next years draft...like he said...dime a dozen...after the elite ones.
I'd rather address WR in free agency, at least you already know how he projects in the NFL. Andre Davis of Houston comes to mind..can be signed relatively cheap I bet...he has really picked up his game this year, with a quality QB throwing to him, plus a great return man.
by BoyzRback07 on Dec 31, 2007 4:47 PM CST up reply actions
agreed
and you can add CB to that list. Where we are picking I wouldn't touch any of them. This draft will be very weak for CBs.
Get a good veteran CB and WR in FA. I mentioned Berrian, but there would be one other I would go for and it would be Chad Johnson. It would cost us a #1, but I would do it in a flash if Cinci wanted to unload him.
Some of the FA CB's next year are:
Drayton Florence (SD)
Randell Gay (NE)
Marcus Trufant (Seattle)

i say..
wr. in f.a. corner back f.a. and get a solid rb in the draft.....i dont know about.....mcloven...i think i heard wade say he doesn't like w.r. in the 1st. rd.
Still early right now, but check it out...
NFL Draft Countdown predicts us drafting two players that have been mentioned here @ BTB Nation.
http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/sub...
Does someone here work for them or something?!?! :]
Pretty interesting
I could deal with those two picks!
LOL....silver...If that happens...I'd freak..
Scott Wright is the man, the main scouting expert I rely on...And he just so happened to pick exactly the two guys I want....wooo hoooo..
If we get Felix Jones and Leodis McKelvin in the first round next year. Jerry would be totally forgiven for any bone head move he's ever made.
Now if he adds Owen Schmitt in the 2nd or 3rd round I'd really freak.
** I would name my first born Jerry Jones **

p.s. more thoughts..
By taking Felix Jones, we'd also have the premier kick returner in college. By taking McKelvin, we'd have one of the best punt returners in college as well...These two guys would work wonders for our team.
cross your fingers.

Mckelvin will
be a late first early second rounder
by Cowboys81 on Jan 1, 2008 5:46 PM CST up reply actions
I share da same thoughts, Boyz...
And like you said, having TWO superb return guys (kind of like getting a "double bonus"). Man, I would be on cloud 9 if we did land both F. Jones and L. McKelvin.
LOL re: you naming your first born "Jerry Jones" -- that's just freakin' hilarious right there!!!
Wait until the new
mocks come out because the drafting order just changed over the weekend.

Current draft order
1 Miami Dolphins
2 St. Louis Rams
3 Oakland Raiders
4 Kansas City Chiefs
5 Atlanta Falcons
6 New York Jets
7 New England Patriots(via SF)
8 Baltimore Ravens
9 Cincinnati Bengals
10 New Orleans Saints
11 Buffalo Bills
12 Denver Broncos
13 Carolina Panthers
14 Chicago Bears
15 Detroit Lions
16 Arizona Cardinals
17 Minnesota Vikings
18 Houston Texans
19 Philadelphia Eagles
20 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
21 Washington Redskins
22 Seattle Seahawks
23 Dallas Cowboys(via Cleveland)
24 Pittsburgh Steelers
25 Tennessee Titans
26 New York Giants
27 San Diego Chargers
28 Jacksonville Jaguars
29 Green Bay Packers
30 Dallas Cowboys
31 San Francisco 49ers(via Colts)
32 New England patriots(spy gate-no pick)
Cleveland #22
Seattle (10-6) made the playoffs. Cleveland (10-6) didn't make the playoffs and will pick before them (i.e.#22).
If Tampa (9-7) or Washington (9-7) go to the Super Bowl, then Clevelands pick will move up to #21.
Draft Order:
http://www.nfl.com/draft/story;jsess...
you're right Derat
I must of flipped the order when I typed them. Dallas is slotted right now at 22, with the possibility of getting to 21 if Tampa or washington get to the superbowl, highly doubtful that will happen.
Jets are not at #3 now
The order has changed and Jets are at #6 now.
by Cowboys81 on Jan 1, 2008 5:45 PM CST up reply actions
fact is..we'll remain #22 and #30-31 no matter
And the way I see it...Jones & McKelvin will likely be there for both those picks.
by BoyzRback07 on Jan 1, 2008 6:07 PM CST up reply actions
Well, that was easy
Now that that's taken care of, we should start gameplanning for Week 1 of '08. :)
