he is a Parcells guy
this doesn't really surprise me. If he does leave, maybe CB will be a strong consideration at pick 22 as you have to have 3 good corners in this league.

Ya
1 good thing about Parcells being gone is we won't get these past their prime guys anymore. Although I liked Glenn his first season with us. I agree with you Terry though, I think a nice fast young corner with the 22nd pick is a really good idea.

I suppose you know this
by your personal conversations with Jones, Ireland or Phillips, otherwise how would you know this??

Don't give me this baloney about investing too much money in one position because I don't buy that for a second. The Cowboys have invested heavily in their LB corps, drafting OLB in back to back years.

If a corner is the best player on the board at 22, and Glenn is gone, you bet we're drafting a corner.

best player available!!!!
Where is Glenn going!!!! He's under contract, Your team would be a loser for years under that best player avaiable theory, thats not how you build a team, first three rounds are for need, and Dallas will not be drafting another high priced corner in the first round. I dont need to talk to Jerry Jones or anyone else in the organization to know that. Newmans contract is up and he'll be looking for bigtime money after next season.

O-line or defensive end/outside linebacker will be our first pick. WE NEED A PASS CONSISTANT RUSH, thats our biggest problem, followed by a free safety, WHO CAN COVER UP FOR OUR PATHETIC STRONG SAFETY, then nose tackle on defense. On Offense, we need a right guard, a left tackle, since this will probably be Flozells last season, a backup center, a wide receiver and a fullback.

Need
Didn't the Cowboys draft for need one year during the Campo era, and three of those picks were wasted on the likes of Dwayne Goodrich, Kareem Lattimore, and Mario Edwards.

Dwayne Goodrich!!!!
was a player that was rated as a mid to late third rounder, and our useless football GM, Jerry Jones reached as he always does taking him in the second round, Goodrich had a good season two years prior to the draft, this is another in a long history of Jerry's moronic picks aa a GM. Like I said, the first three rounds are players to fill your needs, Larrimmore and Edwards were fourth and sixth round draft picks, they were flyers and reaches, again, Jerry in his infinite useless evaluations of players, drafted both who had a history of off the field and attitude issues.

Everyone blames Campo, it wasn't Campos fault at all, he was the pupper in the Jerry Jones puppet show, the team was in salary cap hell, poor drafts, poor free agent signings, poor trades( remember Joey Galloway)that where the blame falls on this organization, Jerry Jones was and is the problem with this organization as a GM.

I still
wouldn't be surprised if we took a corner first round.

With the puppet master Jerry Jones
running the show, it wouldn't surprise me either!!!!

Those days are long gone so give it up
Do you think Jerry would draft a player if Jeff Ireland was against it.  I don't think so.

And Wade Phillips is here to coach, he has too high of a pedigree and too much self respect to have Jerry tell him how to coach.

Oh I didn't blame Campo
I agree it was Jerry's fault.

The Post-Jimmy years were King Jerry's chance to prove that he was a "football guy," and boy did he fail miserably.

I'm glad he finally somewhat learned and forked out some cash to sign Bill Parcells, who has basically rebuilt this team.

My point is that I don't want us to REACH for a player just to fill a need.

Even if CB wasn't a need
This draft is deep in corner so more likely than not the best player available will be a corner.

you're wrong Deke
You never draft strictly for need if you have a talented roster where there are no glaring needs. Any holes we have right now will be filled by sigining UFA, which leaves the Cowboys in the position to take the best player on the board. All successful teams draft this way. The Cowboys drafted strictly for need for many years before Parcells came along and you saw where that got them.

For the most part, I agree with you Terry...
However, by looking at Deke's list, you can tell that Jerry's inability to evaluate playmaking talent really hurt the Cowboys for many, many years B.T. (before tuna).

As others have mentioned, that changed when The King finally hired a previously successful HC in Bill Parcells AND they hired Jeff Ireland to help in the front office.

best player available is a myth
if brady quinn falls to 22 do you think we should pick him?

say what you want about "successful teams drafting this way" but if the pats had the number 4 pick in the draft and jamarcus russell were the best player on their board and still available would they pick him?

absolutely not.

if the best players on the board for us were: rd1 a qb, rd2 a te, rd3 a ss (who is great against the run but weak in coverage), rd4 a rb, rd5 a wr, rd 6 a punter and we got "real value" by picking those guys would it be a good draft?  we would add the 6 best players available and leave our weaknesses unchanged.

there is a reason we usually end up going after OL's and CB's in the late rounds.  parcells would take flyers on areas of need (and when parcells was reshaping the defense to a 3-4 was it coincidental he picked a bunch of fronnt 7 guys?)  were they really the best available at the time?

in the age of free agency and salary cap, the teams that win allocate $ very carefully.

IN FACT, the teams that go after the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE these days tend to be the WORST TEAMS.  Do you remember the Packers scooping up Aaron Rodgers (who was close to going number one overall) with the 24th pick?  And who is that GM who isn't afraid to spend draft picks on his deepest position if a quality player slides... Oh yeah... Matt Millen.

don't kid yourself
Green Bay drafting Rodgers was strictly a need pick because they thought Farve was going to retire.

fairy tale
NO TEAM in this league can say when they start the draft, we can draft the best player available, that nonsense!!! You're going to tell me that you'd draft a linebacker in the first round thats suited as a middle linebacker in a 4-3, but in a 3-4 defense, he doesn't fit because he's the best player available, thats doesn't work, See detroit the last three years and how Matt Millan thinks when he drafts. The first three rounds, you draft for need and players that fit the scheme you run, look at what New England does when it comes to the draft, if there are three players in a position you like, move down, pick up more picks and still draft the player you want. Dallas is in no position to draft the best player available, and I dont think we'll be big players in free agency, we are not getting Trent Green as many think, it isn't happening, I can see us signing a serviceable backup QB, a veteran safety in Babineaux or Hamlin and maybe a guard if the price isn't too steep.

The cowboys still have a few holes to fill, a pass rushing Defensive end/olb,Nose tackle, safety Guard,Backup center, left tackle, wide receiver, fullback, cb and another QB. The most pressing are Guard, Free safety, nose Tackle and Tackle

by Deke on Mar 1, 2007 11:34 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

what I mean by best player available
is obviously the best player remaining on the board that fits your scheme, not the best player pre se.

The BPA theory says you don't reach for a guy based on need, you draft the a better player even if you are stocked at that position.

For instance, FS and OG are our biggest needs unless filled in FA. Lets say we don't and they remain our needs heading into the draft.

If the only FS or G remaining on the board at pick 22 are really 2nd or 3rd rd players, you don't pick them in the first rd because you need them. If the best player at that point is a DE, LB, WR, you pick one of them or trade down.

Picking for need causes teams to reach for players which end up being busts which is exactly what Jones did before Parcells.

so if another qb fit our system
and he fell to 22 we should draft him despite the fact that we have romo?

Jerry Jones, A complete failure as a GM
All you need to know to see why the Cowboys are tens years without a playoff win and in the same class as the Detroit Lions over the same period of time, Jerry Jone wouldn't be hired by any other NFL team as a GM.

After Scanning Your List
It's amazing just how many times King Jerry missed.  Talk about wasted draft picks, wasted years, and wasted money.

Could you imagine if Jimmy Johnson was still the HC at the beginning of your list up to now?

How many more playmakers would we have... not to mention how many more SBs would we have won!!!

That's astounding how much Jerry sucks as a talent evaluator.

BPA
We don't need to reach, and with Ireland as scouting director, we probably will have a good idea of value.

I don't see what's wrong with taking a CB if thats the best talent at #22. Even if A.Glenn stays, he's still coming to the end of his career.

by APerfectStar on Feb 28, 2007 7:50 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

No one knows but me......
I'll tell everyone what were doing in the first round.  !!!!TRADING DOWN!!!!. For more picks so we can fill the roaster with more half talent scubs that will be gone in a few years.

Look at J. Jones draft class, wee trade down for more picks and I thinks he's the only one left, and I've heard rumors of trade. Thats what we have to look forward to.

by thefan on Mar 1, 2007 3:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

thats not true
Here's the draft class,

2004
Rd Sel# Player Pos. School
2 43 Julius Jones RB Notre Dame
2 52 Jacob Rogers T Southern California
3 83 Stephen Peterman G Louisiana State
4 121 Bruce Thornton CB Georgia
5 144 Sean Ryan TE Boston College
7 205 Nathan Jones CB Rutgers
7 216 Patrick Crayton WR N.W. Oklahoma
7 223 Jacques Reeves CB Purdue

You have to take into effect that we also got a first round pick for 2005 which turned out to be Spears, plus because we traded our first round pick to buffalo, for which they picked Losman, we got bledsoe because buffalo cut him.So we have six players still on the roster, although Bledsoe will more than likely will be cut tonight.

As far as the draft goes, depending on what we do in free agency, I also can see us moving down, that wouldn't be a surprise.

by Deke on Mar 1, 2007 4:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Probably we will trade down if we can
But some team has also got to want to trade up, and they seem to be less likely to do that these days.
