Indianapolis Colts - Super Bowl Champs

Colts 29 - Bears 17

Congrats to the Colts. Peyton Manning is probably the happiest guy on the planet right now. No longer can they say he doesn't win the big games. That myth is over, stabbed in the heart, dead. Tony Dungy always coaches with class, and now he gets over the hump as a coach, just like Manning as a player.

I'm sure they're partying over at Stampede Blue, congrats to BigBlueShoe - that Colts homer turned out to be right all along! He told us, we didn't believe him.

The Super Bowl is over - let the Cowboys coaching search re-commence, and let's bring this thing to a close. Combine anyone?

We beat those guys!
We beat the Colts! Tony Romo beat the Colts. We should have been playing in this game.

Correction...
We were the first to beat those guys this season.

By the way
JJ is about to interview 4 minority candidates for HC. So, the media and the NFL need to just lay off his ass...

What a boring game
Rex Grossman is the un-Man!

What?
I thought it was pretty good until the 4th quarter. It slowed down then as the Colts ran the ball.

I'd be comfortable with Ron Rivera.
From the Pittsburgh Tribune:

"I thought he was ready last year," Bears All-Pro linebacker Brian Urlacher said. "Look at the way he carries himself at meetings, the way he prepares us for games, the way he speaks to us. I'd hate to lose him, but I think he needs to be a head coach."

From the Miami Herald:

Bears coach Lovie Smith endorsed Rivera for the Dallas job, going so far as to say: ``I'm still trying to figure out why he hasn't been able to get a head coaching job.''

Rivera's defenses have been among the best in the NFL. The Bears were fifth in total defense this season and second in 2005.

Bears defense played good enough to win
Grossman is the reason the Bears lost, he didn't generate enough offense to keep the Colts off the field as they had too many opportunites to score.
In Romo we Trust

Bears D
gave up 22 points.

That is not good enough to win.

by Longhorn @ Blogging The Boys on Feb 4, 2007 11:05 PM CST up reply actions

Absolutely Right
That Bears D could have been beaten worse if not for the rain-induced turnovers.

by Doomsday on Feb 4, 2007 11:48 PM CST up reply actions

The average winning offense
in the championship round was 34 points. The average winning defense was 17. In the division round the average winning offense was 23 and the average winning defense was 19 (skewed greatly by Indy 15, Bal 6 game). In the wild card round the average winning offense score was 24 and the average winning defense score was 14. (I removed special teams and defensive scores).

The Chicago defense allowed 22 to Indy tonight and was not as good as Baltimore but better than Kansas City and New England in their games with Indy 23 and 38). I think Coach Rivera and the defense did not lose this game but the Bears offense lost the game.

by lee3022 on Feb 5, 2007 12:12 AM CST up reply actions

Right
and you can't look at it in isolation. The Bears offense made sure that Rivera's defense got plenty of national television time by badly losing the time of possession battle. The Colts on the other hand controlled the ball and kept the defense rested.

The difference between Grossman and Manning was essentially the difference in the game.

Congrats to the Colts. Well deserved and FINALLY the media can come up with some other truism to foist on the public...

by dunkman on Feb 5, 2007 8:10 AM CST up reply actions

I agree with Terry.
Indicting Ron Rivera for this isn't fair. Data is not the plural of anectode and this individual game should be treated as such. This was still a top 5 defense in 2006, regardless of the outcome yesterday.

by Skin Patrol @ Blogging The Boys on Feb 5, 2007 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

The
only thing that worries me about the Bears defense is it seemed like they couldn't get off the field on third down.

by jack dein on Feb 5, 2007 10:04 AM CST up reply actions

The defense wasn't the problem
for the bears, they were on the field for over thirty eight minutes, the last five posessions of the bears offense consisted of thirteen plays, thats it, thirteen plays in five possessions. You cant blame the Bears defense when they didn't get anytime to rest because of a pathetic bears offense. The fact is the colts were alot better overall team than the bears and it showed.

I am wondering if NOW
the league addresses the slick kicking balls. Two in one year and this one on the biggest stage.

Different circumstances
A slippery ball in a rain soaked stadium won't cause the NFL to blink.

Just glad...
No one uttered the name 'Romo' when that kick hold was muffed.  I was holding my breath, and was 90% sure that stupid Phil Simms would say something..

by Pete on Feb 5, 2007 9:17 AM CST up reply actions

Manning is the MAN!
If he isn't a player for the ages, don't bother looking for one. Give him a dry track and he's at least half again as good as the 247 yards he chewed up Sunday evening.
But then, of course, Manning was headed for the Hall of Fame long before this. At 30, with some physical luck, he might be just starting. Manning isn't merely breaking people's records. As long as his wheels stay good, he's going to obliterate every QB standard known to fan or man.
Romo has potential, but he has a long way to go to be in Manning's class. If he has the work ethic of Manning he certainly could be the salvation of the Boys.

by memphiscat @ Blogging The Boys on Feb 5, 2007 8:13 AM CST reply actions

I can't find anything
to seriously disagree with. Manning is a great QB and the class of his QB generation. There will always be a debate between his career and Brady's, and that's fine. Brady to me is a Montana type - won't hold a bunch of records, but has performed with tremendous poise in big games.

The records are all falling his way, but it's not just his health and wheels. The Colts also need to keep a good team around him, hard to do in this league. Aikman's final years were squandered because the team got in cap trouble and had a crappy offensive line, and no complementary wide receiver.

Romo has the work ethic by all reports, and he should be a good one. It'll be interesting to see how he does.

Congrats on the game.

by dunkman on Feb 5, 2007 8:26 AM CST up reply actions

Thanks
Your totally right about Brady and Aikman. Watching Romo play, he has a style I like and he shows confidence, looking forward to see how he performs next season, I thing he will be great, especially with some good pass protection.

Ricky Manning Jr.
Did he change his name to Danielle before the game? Not Daniel, but Danielle, the girls name. WTF? Or is there 2 Manning CB's on the Bears. I thought I didn't hear him right when they did the self introductions but then an announcer said the same. Weird timing to say the least.

by Jaxon on Feb 5, 2007 8:24 AM CST reply actions

Two different guys
Ricky is the CB, Danieal (or whatever) is a Saftey.

A no doubter
This has to be one of the most anti climatic superbowl games since the 1985 bears superbowl. There was no way the bears were going to win this game. I said after the opening kickoff, that the bears just scored half of their points for the game, I wasn't far off. Very slopppy game all around, some poor tackling and overall a yawner of a game. The bears have to get a quarterback, Grossman was horrible, he couldn't manage a one complete drive when they needed it.

The superbowl commercials were the worst I've ever seen, other than the Barkley/Wade father comment and the Budweiser rock/paper/scissors commercial, the rest were pretty bad.

by Deke on Feb 5, 2007 8:28 AM CST reply actions

Yeah, the Barkley/Wade commercial
was my favorite.

If Grossman wasn't QBing the Bears, it might've been a better game.

I did like Indy's strategy to win Time of Possession with a balanced O, tire out the Bears D, and force Rexie to have to come-from-behind.

Not sure if that's exactly how they wanted it scripted, but it got the job done enough to win da BIG GAME.

I'm with you
I think their game plan was to put pressure on the Bears only real weakness - QB.

In no particular order, I found myself wondering:
(1) Wonder if this game would be better with Griese at QB?
(2) What would it be like to have LBs and DBs who actually covered receivers?
(3) What would happen if I slapped my boss?
(4) How freakin old IS Prince?? 50, 55?? And was it just me, or was that whole silhoutte thing with the sheets nastier than anything Janet and Juston concocted?
(5) OK, next time, one less chipotle in the chili.

by dunkman on Feb 5, 2007 10:00 AM CST up reply actions

To my boss; the fist bump is out...
I'd love to get away with that today. SLAP

The talk about Prince playing the halftime show was that he's older, he's a safe act, there won't be a nipple slip. I almost believed it. Then I heard him and whoever his latest chick was got divorced - I said "Uh Ohhh"

The HT show was boring, the commercials were mostly lame, I hate it when re-runs make it in. I can't remember the last great run of superbowl halftime commercials.  Sometime before the foreign language IBM commercials and all the lame Dot-com commercials.  Ahhhh, the good ol days.

by Doomsday on Feb 5, 2007 10:32 AM CST up reply actions

Super Bowl
First off, Congrats to the Colts.  Dungy and Manning deserved it.  Being from Tennessee, I have a bona fide man crush on Manning, and I'm happy for him.
Secondly, the Bears lost because of Rexy.  He was spotted a seven point lead by Devin Hester, the defense held the Colts offense to  22 points, and Vinateri even missed a field goal.  Oh yeah, and the Colts turned the ball over 3 times.  The game hinged on him making plays and he made none.  The only reason he had a touchdown was beacuse of Thomas Jones' beastly 53 yard run.
Finally, Jerry needs to do whatever it takes to get Rivera here.  I'm talking like Al Saunders money.  The Bears ownership has to pay Lovie, they have to resign Lance Briggs, Rexy, and probably another QB (Jeff Garcia?).  If the 'Boys can't ante up for a D-Coordinator like Rivera, then they are not serious about winning.

Who's ready for the draft?

I'm a RomoHo

by Volorado on Feb 5, 2007 12:08 PM CST reply actions

Garcia has performed better in the WCO
The Bears offensive scheme is an attempted balance of running between the tackles and throwing the ball down-the-field, so signing Jeff Garcia wouldn't be a good fit.

You're probably right,
so what do they call the scheme where the QB throws it to the other team a lot? I think that might be a perfect fit for Grossman...

by dunkman on Feb 5, 2007 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

They call that scheme...

I say the deal's off
if they offer a one-for-one exchange with Grossman...

by dunkman on Feb 6, 2007 8:29 AM CST up reply actions

maybe
but if we try to trade him what do we present, veteran qb big arm, he is getting old, holds onto the ball to long, and we have no leverage in trading him because everyone knows he's not going to be in dallas next year.
