It's official - Wade Phillips introduced as Cowboys coach

The press conference is going on, but the Cowboys website keeps crashing for me so some of you guys have probably heard more than I have.

In that spirit, this is an open thread for discussion of the press conference, or just general chat on the hiring. If Wade says anything interesting, be sure to post it.

Caught him on the NFL Network
He actually had a decent sense of humor. Said "Jerry is the best owner EVER." Funny stuff. Dodged a question on who was going to do the offensive play calling. Wouldn't promise a Super Bowl - said something like "I like to under-promise and overperform".  Talked a little about lots to get done - needing to assemble the rest of the coaching staff, teach them the offiense and defense, so that they can teach the players. Good presence for whatever that was worth.

Missed it
Stupid power went out during the middle of the press conference. Then my DVR came back on and changed to Everybody....Raymond, so much for rewinding.

If I can get to the DC site, they should have it.

I'd like to see a lot of action with the staff over the next several days - I'm hoping folks like Singletary would still come in to play the role of D-Coordinator, Wade can't worry about holding someone's hand while he manages the big picture.

I guess I'm glad it's not Norv, he can get conservativ-itis at times, especially if he's scheming to save his job and not to win.  The hiring of Wade probably leaves Garrett with the chance to be creative while still showing his smarts.

Too many lame sayings
"These cowboy boots are glad to be back in Texas."

"I'll do my best to carry the torch forward... or I should say carry the star."

"I'm like the frog that dreamed of being the king."

Also, he spent a lot of time defending Jerry's interview process.  I thought that came off strange.

I hope he gets us over the hump.  We'll see.

You really can't pay attention
to the writers & critics on this one, because back when Bill was hired, we were all but GUARANTEED to go to (and possibly win) the Super Bowl...

A lot of things have to fall into place for that to happen in any given year, only part of which is who the head coach is.

A 48-42 record isn't stellar, but if the personnel and the talent is there, the wins will come.

Any Yankees fans remember the media's reaction to the hiring of Joe Torre back in 1996?  Try not to let the columnists get you down...

Clueless Joe...
....was one of the NY tabloids headline when Torre was hired.

I don't factor in
the record from interim coaching. Not his teams, really. So as a HC he's 45-35, which averages to 9-7 seasons. Not bad when you consider that in each case he went to teams that were struggling when he was hired.

The ESPN guys are like any other media. Find controversy and overplay it, and where no controversy exists, hype something small on a popular team until it looks controversial. Why is Owens their favorite target instead of Roid-Dude Merriman, gangsta Sean Taylor, or head cases too numerous to list from the Bengals? It apparently sells.

I'll say this
Our D will be aggressive.  If we can get better coverage from our DBs we'll be in good shape.

I think our guys back there could've used more of a pass rush, so Phillips stunting will be welcomed by me.  Plus, Bowles has hinted that he and Zim were restricted in what wrinkles they could implement, if he stays one maybe things change.

I'm looking forward to see how this works -- I think Phillips was the best choice.

Give him our back
He'll need it.  The ESPN vultures are already picking at his flesh.

I don't know enough about any of these guys to know who's "the best".  BUt he seems pretty down to earth, actually in a Parcells way.  I think he'll be a good fit.

Thanks Grizz
another story with your excellent coverage. Why pay to go to DMN for crap when we can come here?

The OFFICIAL Fan Site of America's Team
The above statement should be posted under the Blogging The Boys title of this web site.

Because I agree with Lee and a lot of others that you get more in-depth, unsensationalistic Dallas Cowboys information here than in DMN, DFW, ESPN, SI, FOXSPORTS, CBSSPORTSLINE, USATODAY, MSNBC, THESPORTINGNEWS and PROFOOTBALLWEEKLY.

You do all of us Cowboy fans a great service, Grizz.

Props to you, Bro!!!
