Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Sidney Rice = A QB's Best Friend

I posted this on another place, but I wanted some extra feedback.

Giving it some thought here at what would be best for this team and one thing I remember from all of Romo's struggles in December that a lot of his INTs were not necessarily bad decisions under pressure but bad throws made on good decisions. Go look at the Sheppard and Dawkins INTs in the Philly game, the Demps INT in the Giants game, Kennedy INT in the Lions game. It's just my opinion, but looking at all those plays Romo was able find the open receiver and direct the ball along the route of the receiver. He just threw the pass too high, going over the receiver and falling to the defender, causing the interception.

Also, watch the first throw of Romo's NFL career against the Texans. Hurd had to leap up and make the catch.

This now leads me to believe that Romo does not big receiver like Bowe or Jarrett, which he had in Owens, or fast receiver like Ginn or  Hill, which he had in Glenn. He needs a jumpball receiver. A target with the wingspan, the leap and physical presence to make a catch out of an off the mark pass. He needs Sidney Rice.

Are you Ready for Sidney Rice?--Keep in mind this was just showing clips of his freshman year
The Catch--there is also a sign in there, too. He made the catch while news blurb on Terry Glenn being a gametime decision was on the ESPN ticker.

Bottom Line: Sidney Rice has one of the quickest reaction times of any receiver to ever play the game. Throw the ball his direction and at the most impossible last second he'll make the adjustment and find a way to make the catch whether it be diving, jumping or twisting his body.

Star-divide

Razorback Fans Note: Among receivers Dwayne Jarrett, Robert Meachem and Dwayne Bowe, only Sidney Rice had a 100 yard rec game against Top Arkansas CB Chris Houston.

I like Rice
reminds me of a young Chad Johnson, but I wouldn't pick him until the second round. Lots of potential, but not quite polished enough to warrant first rd consideration.
In Romo we Trust

Me, too, but he's a high 2nd round pick
So I'd be a tradeup that hopefully we'd be willing to make.

Maybe our 2nd, 6th and Crayton for the Texans #2
They could use another receiver and want to add picks. It's only a 6th but it is a pick.

good teams trade
down not up.

as a matter of fact trading for picks builds great teams...

tradinng up guts them

That's only Step 1
Step 1. You trade down to get a lot of players so you have a good footdation.

Step 2. You fix whatever holes are left by trading up.

i disagree
step 1. you cut a hole in a box
step 2. you put your junk in that box

Can I ask what it is that you don't like about
Patrick Crayton? I think he's a pretty good reciever, one that is very valuable to the Cowboys. Why would they want to trade him?

I like Crayton BUT
At his age with little upside, I think he'll be nothing but a guy who holds up the development of our younger WRs like a Rice or Hurd/Austin.

hmm
i don't see hurd or austin being as good as crayton is now.

age? upside?
are we talking abuot the same patrick crayton who si 3 years removed from being an NAIA quarterback?

nfl wr's take time to develop and that assumes they played wideout before pro ball....

you make it sound like we signed kelvin martin for a third time

If 29 is old, I must be ancient! ;-)
I get your point though, old in football terms.

Yes, while Hurd and Austin are 21 and 22...
...and have talent Crayton real had in terms of overall athleticism. Plus, they are 7-8 years younger and, because of Crayton being a QB for most his football career, they are just a good training camp away from catching up to him in terms of development as WRs.

In fact, based on what Hurd's scouting reports had on him coming out "great hands, great routes, great work ethic, great ball skills (he was a 3rd round projected pick before running a 4.6)" I wouldn't be shocked if Crayton was the 4th wideout by the time the season started. Maybe 5th if we draft Sidney Rice like I want us to do.

But to give him the benefit of the doubt, he survived Terrance Copper and Quincy Mor...ok I couldn't keep a straight face for that line. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Can Crayton stand up to real competition or was he just the last man standing slot receiver?

by kk218 on Mar 19, 2007 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Crayton is actually 27
though he turns 28 in 2.5 weeks, per ESPN's player pages. Maybe we can say he's "middle aged" in football years rather than "old."

I like Crayton--and I was about to say that it is because he's "clutch" by catching all those 3rd down passes, then I realized that almost all of his catches come on third downs--which means he's getting the ball when I'm most nervous & emotional, thus endearing me to him even more when he moves the chains.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to ship a guy out who has a niche and does it well. (Though he is probably the lamest punt returner in the NFL.) He's a good possession receiver. I'm in favor of competition, and if Austin or Hurd can supplant him, fine. But I'm not assuming those guys are viable players just quite yet. It should make a good position battle in camp.

It would be a waste of a trade
Crayton is a good solid WR, and he avoided injury last year. He still has some upside.

But most importantly, he's tendered for 2nd round compensation if another team signs him, why would we give him up in a trade????

WR named Rice?
A WR named Rice will never have success in the NFL!

Another "fun-to-watch" player
Enjoyed watching Rice play in college, and I'd be ecstatic if we nabbed him.

I think he's being overlooked by some, but you can't argue with the stats you mentioned above, kk218.

Plus, he's definitely a playmaker.

It would be cool if we were able to land Rice.

I like Sidney
When he puts on 20 pounds he may become a good NFL receiver. At the moment Meachem may be more effective. I like what Rice did against Houston but Houston's gambling style seemed to work against him in that game. There is little question there are good receivers to be had in this draft but I also disagree that we should trade up to get one. The X factor regarding receivers is the comparison with Hurd and Miles. Jerry Jones said this is a position of strength for the Cowboys and he presumable takes into account the age of Owens and Glenn.
