Breaking: Ken Hamlin visiting the Cowboys

Adam Schefter just reported that Seahawks safety Ken Hamlin will be visiting the Cowboys on Wednesday morning. He says it's a very logical match with Ken Hamlin and Roy Williams in the Cowboys secondary at safety.

Good news
You beat me to it Grizz. I was just about to post this.

Would be an excellent sign if we could pull it off and would give Watkins more time to learn the position.

Interesting
I guess no one wanted him at his asking price.

Hamlin/Watkins would be a great safety pairing
Watkins = great centerfielder that struggles in man-on-man coverage
Hamlin = great man-on-man cover safety that struggles playing in space

i ddon't think that matters
i don't think nelson is there when the cowboys pick.

by ab03 @ Blogging The Boys on Mar 20, 2007 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree
It looks like his stock is back up into the top 20.

by APerfectStar on Mar 20, 2007 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

well
just because a guy is projected top 20 doesn't mean he will actually be a top 20 pick. There are players who slide every year.

I really believe he has a good shot of being there at 22. Plus, if he's there at 18 or 19, JJ could easily trade one of our extra picks in the latter rds to get him.

by Terry on Mar 21, 2007 9:24 AM CDT up reply actions

True
He could slide, I always think of Steven Jackson sliding right down to us (ugh). I posted in another thread that if we don't sign Hamlin, someone above us could and might allow Nelson to drop.

It's still too far from the draft to get a really good read on how things will shake out.

by APerfectStar on Mar 21, 2007 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I dunno,
I've heard very mixed reviews about Hamlin's coverage skills.  Generally, I'm ok with whatever mischief jerry and crew get into during free agency but right now I want a safety that can cover, period.  If Ken can play cover safety great, if not or if were not sure, we don't need him.

by JJshairgel on Mar 20, 2007 8:27 PM CDT reply actions

I think Hamlins a better cover guy than Roy
...but that ain't sayin much.  I've read mixed reviews on his coverage skills as well.

IMO, because of Roy's inadequecies in coverage, we need an Excellent cover safety.

Is Hamlin excellent?  No.

Would he be better than Pat Watkins? IMO, Absolutely.

That equals "sign Ken Hamlin" on my calc, but there I go spendin' JJ's money again.  But ya can't take whatever money your under the cap with ya to next season, so I say "Spend it if ya got it!!!"

by Starred4Life on Mar 20, 2007 9:14 PM CDT reply actions

True, but
...have you seen anyone cover a referee better than Roy???  Have you!!!!???

Geeeesh, just move the kid to OLB already and be done with it.  If Roy is a square peg, then safety is a round hole.

by Starred4Life on Mar 21, 2007 8:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Great comment
now Roy only has to sweat out a paternity suit from said referee! Cover - yes. Lay - yes. Embrace - yes. Excuse taken - yes. Protection provided - uh...no.

Sign Hamlin with a 1 year out.
I think signing Hamlin would solidy a position that has been an area of weakness way too long.  A signing like this is way overdue.

I expect the deal would essentially be a 3 year deal with an "out" after the first year in case a safety like Landry falls in our lap in the draft or the game slows down for Watkins and he ends up being a quality cover safety.

I'd prefer to draft a quality CB in the first round over a WR.  There are so many quality WR in this draft that you could still end up with a nice player later in the draft.  Besides, just ask Detroit how easy it is to bust on a first round wr.

If I was a betting man, and I am, I would bet that the Cowboys first two picks are on the defensive side of the ball and their third rounder will be OL. A WR will be a late round flyer.  I'd expect CB,DE,OL.

With Roy playing Strong Safety you are gonna need a CB playing free safety (i.e. move Henry)

Agree with TBone and others
Having "the Hammer" for one season will take a little pressure off PW and give him another year to get better.

And who knows, maybe bringing in competition like Hamlin might bring the best out of Watkins.

By waiting so long to have Ken Hamlin in for a visit may have been a negotiating ploy since barely any teams really inquired about him.  This could give King Jerry a chance to sign "the Hammer" to a more "economical" deal -- compared to the previous FA signings thus far.

Adam Schefter of NFL.com
echoes my theory about the reason King Jerry might have waited before looking at Ken "The Hammer" Hamlin.

IF Hamlin is signed
you can almost Guarantee Dallas is moving down in this draft from the first round

by Deke on Mar 20, 2007 10:11 PM CDT reply actions

Not really
They could go after a WR, which they might do regardless if we sign Hamlin or not.

You have to ask yourself one question before you sign Hamlin. Will he stunt the progress of Watkins by signing him? Hamlin is good, but not great.

Owens 33 yrs. old
Glenn 32 yrs. old

Crayton, is nothing more than a good 3rd WR. He may also not be here next season because he will become a UFA next year.

Sam Hurd COULD become a good #2.

Austin is a project and may not be ready for a couple years.

The organization has to address WR this year. Meachem,Bowe,Jarrett should all be there when we pick at 22.

It has to be a consideration, if not we are almost certain to spend a high draft pick next year.

by Cowboys81 on Mar 21, 2007 12:26 PM CDT reply actions

There's only one first round talent
at wide receiver and thats Calvin Johnson, no one else is worthy of a first round pick.

Last year everyone was enamored with Chad Jackson, he couldn't crack the starting lineup on the patriots, who were in need of wide receievers, they think so much of Chad Jackson today, that they went out and signed three wide receivers in the offseason.

by Deke on Mar 21, 2007 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions

definitely not true
Dwayne Bowe is will be a big time receiver in this league, he's definitely first rd material and someone I'd love to see wearing the star.

Jackson will be very good, he was hampered by a hamstring injury last season, thats why he wasn't as  effective, plus he's a rookie. He'll be good in time. Thats why the Pats signed some vets, you have to give rookie receivers some time to develop.

I know the 'mocks' are saying Jarrett...
should be there, but personally I would SHOCKED AND AWED if he was.  I don't think Meachen or Bowe could carry this guys' jock strap.

I also don't get how guys like Troy Williamson and Roddy White go Top 10, but then the same guys say Jarrett isn't worthy of such a high selection this year.

To that, I give a big "WHAT??!!"

Does he have the tools: good hands, size, speed and athleticism? Check.

Did he play against top-level comp at a big school? Big Check.

Did he play in a pro-style system? Another Big Check, as USC is damn-near NFL Triple A.

What's not to like about this kid???  To me, Jarrett would be an absolute STEAL for us at 22!!!

by Starred4Life on Mar 21, 2007 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Mike Williams
bust--check.

same things said about him too,

Steve smith is the better receiver at USC

by Deke on Mar 21, 2007 2:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Disagree
Ginn Jr. and Meachem are certainty worthy of a first round grade. If Ginn worked out he might be a 10 pick right now. As it stands, he is still expected to be taken in the top 20.

by Cowboys81 on Mar 21, 2007 12:42 PM CDT reply actions

Agree with Cowboy81
Meacham is going to be very good and Ginn, just as a returner,as well as a Bob-Hayes-type speed, is worthy of a 1st rounder. Rice is also a possibility. However one or more are expected to be available by moving down a few spots.

by lee3022 on Mar 21, 2007 2:32 PM CDT reply actions

if you draft on a players forty times
you'll lose every year, some of you get too wrapped up with these combine forty times, they're meaningless in judging receivers.

by Deke on Mar 21, 2007 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions

if they're meaningless
then why do they run them??  You can't tell me speed isn't an important part of playing the position.

Now it shouldn't be the decisive factor, production should be, but if two players are equally productive, playing at the same level, then I'm picking the faster guy.

Rememebr what Al Davis says, speed kills!

Cant teach Quickness!!!
That's more important than speed. Speed is a matter of form, watch olympic sprinters. Too many people make the mistake of confusing speed with quickness. I hear all the time about a boxer having great hand speed, thats not speed, thats quickness.

Forty times are so over inflated, the ten and twenty yard time splits in the forty are the key as is the short shuttle times to determine a receievers quickness, quickness is the key to a receiver, not top end speed as the forty times measures. No receiever in a game runs forty yards flatout in a straight line down the field in a game.

If Player X runs a 4.59 forty and 4.15 short shuttle and player B runs a 4.39 forty and a short shuttle 4.25, who is the quicker receiver??

The key to determining the quickness of a receiver is the difference between the forty time and the short shuttle time, if the difference between the two times is more than four tenths, thats a measure of a receivers quickness, if its less than four tenths, its a measure of top speed, so player X (4.59-4.15=.44)is the quicker receiver and a more viable NFL player as thats a player that will be able to get open in the first ten to twenty yards from the snap than a player who has top speed like player B (4.39-4.25=.14) Short shuttle times is more important than forty times when judging a player, any player, although the media wants to make a big deal about forty times.

The other drill thats more important than the forty times is the receiever drills where you watch the receiver, turn catch a ball, turn, catch another ball and then runs along the twenty yard marker and catches balls while running full speed along the marker. Alot of the receivers either cant catch a ball at full speed, or cant run a straight line, and if they drop a ball, they end up dropping another, losing concentration.

by Deke on Mar 21, 2007 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Nah, I still like you can't teach speed
You can't teach quickness just doesn't roll off the toungue and would never have made a neat little saying. ;-)

Deke
If a corner bites on a pump fake, how is quickness going to get him back in position to defend the pass?? It isn't, but pure speed will. Why do you think Deion was the greatest cover corner of all time, he was FAST and could catch up to any WR on any pattern.
