Morning practice report
The DMN blog with some morning practice highlights.
TE Jason Witten was the star. He caught three deep balls for touchdowns -- two on seam routes from Tony Romo and a post from Brad Johnson. The burn victims: Bradie James and Bobby Carpenter on the seams and Roy Williams on the post.
Good for Witten, but I think I’ve seen some of those same names on defense getting beat in the passing game before. Must fix pass defense.
Sixth-round pick Nick Folk consistently boomed kickoffs into the end zone. One landed on the back line.
That one is for BTB-regular Dunkman, who has declared the Folk/Gramatica battle the Showdown of the Century.
CB Terence Newman pantsed C Andre Gurode while Gurode has his back turned in the offensive huddle. Thank goodness Gurode was wearing spandex shorts instead of a jock under his practice shorts. "It's an ongoing battle -- the skinny guys vs. the fat guys," Gurode said. "The skinny guys better watch out."
One, I'm glad I didn’t see that actually occur. Two, would Parcells have allowed "pantsing" at his practices? If not, is the current pro-pantsing regime a better thing or not. This is serious business to discuss!

T-New needs to be careful with his pranks
last time he played a prank on Canty things didn't turn out too well.

I thought they reported
that Newman won that lockerroom fight with Canty? Well, according to the players who were keeping score while coaches broke the thing up.
Really?
Canty is huge, I find that hard to believe

I think the loose atmosphere
is good for the team. They needed a break from the Parcells iron fist.
Witten
I wouldn't worry about Witten burning Williams, James or Carpenter because he's going to burn every LB and S he faces this season.
thats why they drafted
Spencer - to get to QB or in his head

I thought Bradie lost weight
and Roy what can you say - never will defend againest the pass
but out little guppy I thought he was fast ?
hope Spencer can get in the QB's mind or in to his chest

Thanks for the pointer B-D
I love these snippets:
And while it sounds simple enough, Romo said not every quarterback has the ability to go from a short-route stance to a deep throw.
"If you aren't able to do both, you might struggle in this offense," Romo said. "You have to be able to go short to deep quickly. It's difficult for most people to do. I think it's neat that we have both in."
And the reason the Cowboys can have those back and forth progressions is simply because Romo has the arm strength to do it.
"It's more of a situation of either you can do it, or you can't," Romo said of throwing the ball 40 to 50 yards down the field, with basically a flick of the wrist. "Some guys can do it and some guys can't. You practice it so you can do it. If you can't, then you're smart enough to figure out you need to be the guy checking the ball down.
And
"It's a tough combination to have a strong arm, with a quick release," Romo said. "So I've always tinkered with the idea of how do I maintain both. This off-season, I'm trying to find ways to do both. But that's nothing new. I change my mechanics probably every year. What I've learned is there's always a way to get faster with your release."
Has it worked?
Obviously, it's too early to tell, considering the Cowboys are still running around in shorts and T-shirts.
"But I'm feeling like I'm throwing the ball better than I ever have," Romo said.
Add that to the list of things that are different from last year.
