Punt Returns

It may just be me but I am about ready to see someone else fielding punts for the boys. Jerheme Urban just doesn't do it for me. Crayton doesn't either. So far this preseason they have netted 5 return yards. I guess it could also be on our punt return team for allowing the coverage to get to the returner before they have a chance to make the catch and get upfield. Who else would you like to see returning punts and is Special Teams a problem at this point?

How about Tyson Thompson?

He returns kicks great -- He barely plays during the game, so I'd have him return punts also.  I do it all the time when I play Madden football, and he rocks in both positions :)

Not sure he can catch

the punts. Coach Parcells said it takes a special talent to field punts and not everyone can do it. it sounds like Crayton and Stanback will do it this year (and Stanback needs lots of practice).

what about our special teams so far

early in the preseason our coverage was pretty dismal. Granted there are a lot of guys out there trying to win jobs on ST just to stay on the 53 man roster, I really hope to see it improve but both punt return and kickoff coverage was a bit disconcerting.

As far as Tyson Thompson is concerned i think he or Miles Austin may be viable candidates but I see both as mainly kick returners because they are both speed guys and I can't recall too many times where they break the first tackle and then get upfield which I think is crucial when it comes to punt returning, ie. Wes Welker, Darren Sproles, and other shifty returners.

Your thoughts?

I think

your problem is the same as Phillips'... he seems to be struggling with it as well. Right now it looks like he'll have to opt for someone who won't fumble the punt rather than having a potential game breaker ready to take it to the house every time.

Darren Sproles?

I wonder if he is available?  There has been talk that San Diego will not have room for him.  He'd solve our punt return problems.
