Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Can Cowboys get Spencer for CB?

Manny Lawson, the Niner's OLB is out for the season. His backup is out also.
Niners need LB's bad.  They have a chance to make the playoffs this year.
But not without quality LB's.
Do you think the Cowboys could trade an LB for Shante Spencer, the Niner's backup CB? Or even one of the starters?

What do you think?

no, I'd pass on Spencer

saw the guy play at Pitt, he's no better than Reeves.

Why would we trade?

Our starting outside linebacker for a back up CB?

We have two number 1's next year, we are going to have to address this problem in the draft.

i think he meant

trade A LB, not necessarily Anthony Spencer, for Shante Spencer

My Thinking

My thinking was that Carpenter is not playing much right now.  Burnett gets hurt.  Either can play outside.  If Newman can't make it, the 'Boys need help in the corners.  Where do you get it?  You can't get without giving up something that someone else wants.

SF needs an OLB, or their season may be over since they are on the fringe of success.

Waiting to solve your CB problem next year may mean giving up on this year (as far as the SB goes).

Just a thought.

Burnett can not play strong side OLB

He is way too light, plus Carp is not the kind of pass rusher Phillips prefers at OLB.  That is why we drafted Spencer.

Also it looks like Newman is very close to coming back.

I wouldn't say

we are exactly deep at LB anyway.

I love me some T.O....I ain't skeerd!!!!!

Just because an idea pops into your head

it doesn't necessitate writing it down in a diary.

  1.  Newman is much closer to 100% right now than Ellis as it seems Newman may be starting in the nickel this Sunday.
  1.  Newman will be around at least for the next 5 years and play at a high level.  While, Ellis may have 2 or 3 good years left in the tank.
  1.  We don't really have anybody else right now who can start full time at SOLB.
  1.  Spencer's potential an value to this team would way out weigh that of Shante Spencer's.  It would be a really bad trade on our part.  And no way they would trade one of their starting CB's for a relatively unproven rookie.

ooops I thought you meant Anthony spencer as well

many apologies although again we don't have much depth at LB right now and T-New is close to coming back

Your out of your mind

What do you think?

I think your smoking something.

Trade a potential rookie of the year for a no-name back up CB

Sure in a second.

yeah

I just saw the same thing. He wasn't too clear in his article.

I agree. We need all the LBs we have on the roster.

How Can You Say I Wasn't Clear

I was perfectly clear.  I never once suggested that we trade away Spencer.  I said we should trade FOR Spencer.  GET = FOR     If I had wanted to trade Spencer, I would have said "What can we GET for Spencer"

Please do not cricize me for your misreading.

I still believe that the Cowboys need depth in the backfield.  All teams that play a 3-4 need more Linebackers.  Which is why the Niner's may be looking to make a trade.

by raysheff on Sep 21, 2007 6:12 PM CDT reply actions

No way

We need all our LB's. TNew will be back soon.

by APerfectStar on Sep 21, 2007 11:14 PM CDT reply actions

trade

We COULD trade Carpenter, but I think we need him even if he doesn't play that much.  He can "spell" other backers and will be nice to have if any of our starting backers gets hurt.  Its a LONG season and tough on linebackers..

Tnew should be back, maybe even for this game.  I would like to have an upgrade at corner, but if Tnew comes back, our whole defense gets better.

Go Cowboys!
