Wade Phillips made some interesting moves this weekend

I admit to some uneasy feelings about the Dallas Cowboys over the past couple of weeks. For a while there, I was flying high with our early success while also trying to stay grounded. But the mood started darkening a bit with the Terence Newman injury that wasn’t even reported to us until someone asked, then the diagnosis kept changing. Then Kevin Burnett got hurt and Greg Ellis got a second opinion that didn’t change anything about his status. Then came the roster cuts. With the cornerback and linebacker positions unsettled due to injury, the Cowboys decided to part ways with a couple of guys who had been lining up with the second teams. It seems that I wasn’t the only one confused by those moves. A couple of Dallas players weren’t very excited by the moves, either.

"I'm pissed off," safety Roy Williams said of Glenn being cut, a move that came at a time when the Cowboys are uncertain about cornerback Terence Newman's status for Sunday's game against the New York Giants.

Linebacker Bradie James questioned the wisdom of releasing Glymph while Greg Ellis remains out and rookie Anthony Spencer is struggling to master strongside linebacker after playing defensive end in college.

"I was surprised," James said of the Glymph whacking. "There were a few surprises in this 53 that came up. But, hey, they got the plan. It's my job to execute it."

I’m the first to admit that I thought Aaron Glenn’s skills were eroding and wondered all offseason if he had what it took to still be effective. After watching training camp and the preseason games, I wouldn’t have minded if they elevated Jacques Reeves ahead of Glenn to third corner. Yes, Glenn’s 1.7 million dollar salary would have been way out of line, but I would rather pay 1.7 million to keep Nate Jones off the field at cornerback. In his previous Dallas history, Jones never proved he had the skills to actually play CB, and he didn’t do it this year in preseason, either. He couldn’t have because he rarely played.

That means {Nate} Jones, who has played mostly on special teams his first three years, will likely be asked to contribute in the dime package, too.

Jones was considered a surprise to make the final roster, considering he didn't play much on defense in the last two preseason games. And when he did get extensive time in the second game against Denver, he allowed a 90-yard touchdown pass in the second half.

But while Glenn and recently-released Joey Thomas might have made a few more plays in the preseason, Jones makes up for it on special teams.

Great, Jones makes up for it on special teams, yet he faces the very real possibility of being the nickel corner on opening day. This makes me nervous.

The cutting of Junior Glymph I was less concerned about, because he hasn’t really shown himself to be a player in the past, and while he had a strong start to training camp his play got progressively worse as the preseason games rolled on. In some ways, he’s not much better an option than new pickup Justin Rogers, but at least Junior had some experience under his belt and knew the Dallas defense. Rogers will be learning on the fly.

Mickey Spags examines this more in an article, here. Wade Phillips made some interesting moves that better payoff, or Dallas could get themselves in a hole early.

The new corner Evan Oglesby gave some quotes today and Nick Eatman relays them to us.

"It's not easy to come to another team and try to step right in," said Oglesby, who originally signed with the Bills in 2005 as an undrafted rookie free agent, but joined the Ravens later that season. "But I'm looking forward to come in here and helping in anyway I can. Hopefully I can come in and make this team better somehow."

And Oglesby should know a thing or two about good defenses, having been a part of Baltimore's stingy unit that ranked No. 1 in the league in both yards and points allowed. Oglesby said he learned a lot just by being a part of a defense that featured two of the best defensive players in the NFL in linebacker Ray Lewis and safety Ed Reed.

"Hopefully, I can bring what I learned from Ray and Ed and bring it here to the Cowboys," Oglesby said. "It looks like we've got a good group of guys here, good leaders. So I'm just hoping I can get in here and pick it up quickly."

Some Dallas players changed their jersey numbers.

New linebacker Justin Rogers is in No. 50. New cornerback Evan Oglesby is in No. 23

Ken Hamlin took over No. 26 with Aaron Glenn's departure. He had been wearing No. 27. Rookie tackle James Marten switched from No. 79 to No. 78, which Remi Ayodele wore during training camp. Rookie safety Courtney Brown is moving from No. 40 to No. 27.

Wow

I forgot how bad a roster can look when it's got Jerry Jones' fingerprints all over it...

Anyone else see 6-10 in our future???

LOL

Naw, just a mild MCL sprain...I'm day-to-day...

by Starred4Life on Sep 4, 2007 7:13 AM CDT up reply actions

No!!

Apparently that's pretty much indefinite. Ellis has been day-to-day since I think 2004 or so.

Wade Phillips coach speak

When wade says, players is day to day, it actually means, we should of placed him on the PUP list in the first place but we screwed up, now I have to keep lying during press conferences.

When wade says a player will miss a couple of weeks, it actually means the player could, would, should be placed on Injured reserve.

by Deke on Sep 4, 2007 7:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I

think you nailed it right there Deke. I don't think Ellis will be 100 percent until the later part of the season, if at all. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt and say 4 to 6 weeks, but that might be stretching it. Like I said, don't count on Ellis to be a major contributor this season.

by Cowboys81 on Sep 4, 2007 9:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree

it seems it'll take some time, but I don't think Phillips has been screwing with us. I think he's hearing from the docs that physically he is capable of playing, but only Ellis knows when the pain is bearble enough to get on the field.

i will reserve judgement until after

the first few weeks.

This has certainly been the most suspense entering a season in a while... We've got "Super Bowl or basement" as the spectrum of our potential.

Keeps me coming back to the blogs at least.

Even before Ellis, T-New, KB & the cuts...

I was cautiously optimistic -- though my usual superstitious self -- when I predicted a record of 9-7 for the 2007-2008 season.

My hope is the following:

  1.  Our Phillips 34 defense wreaks havoc -- regardless of the secondary situation -- from Game 1 all the way through Game 16... continually making opposing offenses jittery and tentative in their decision making, while forcing numerous turnovers.
  1.  Our offense not only establishes and maintains a well-balanced, high-octane scoring routine, but also a ball-control/minimum-penalty/minimum-turnover consistency.
  1.  Our coaching staff -- primarily the Son of Bum -- continually exhibits proper game management... especially with the clock, with time outs, and with important on-the-field decisions.
  1.  Our injuries to be very, very minimal without key players having to suffer serious physical hardships that would adversely affect our season (although we've already seen the GE & T-New situation occur).
  1.  Our team to develop and continue a killer instinct... that when we've got an early lead and an opposing team down, that -- from the HC to the players -- we call & execute plays (on O & D) that go for the jugular to put our opponents away.  I don't want us to be a team that cannot enjoy prosperity and blows leads.  I'd like to see us be a squad that stays in continual attack mode, putting teams out of their misery... kicking them when their down and disposing of them all the way to victory.

And if our Dallas Cowboys can accomplish those five wishes of mine, I'd gladly welcome being wrong with my prediction.

you guys need to settle down

you're all forgetting that Phillips is a defensive guru and knows what he's doing. During the preseason, I'm sure we didn't see anything close to the kind of blitzes and stunts we'll see from the defense once the team hits the field Sunday night.

We'll get to the qb under Phillips, I have no worries about that. Without Newman, we will give up some plays, but our offense we pick up the slack early on.

You guys are worrying way too soon.

Settle down!!!!

If anyone needs to settle down,

Yes, Wade Phillips is a defensive guru, but he's not the one on the field making the tackles or the proper reads, and we have a few players on the field that will make a bunch of their own mistakes.

Yes, We should get alot more pressure on the quarterback, sacks dont always equal wins but his defenses are also prone to give up alot more big plays also from before mention players not filling the proper gap or not making the correct reads, with or wthout Newman, our defense is going to get gashed at times.

The chargers IMO, had one of the most amount of talent on their roster last year and their defense I believe, off the top of my head had nine games where their pressure defense gave up more than 21 points in games and plenty of big plays given up, see Cincy game for evidence of that.

Dallas is learning a new philosphy in their 3-4 scheme, which will have some growing pains especially if our corners cant cover one on one, if they cant, well the word COVER TWO will be heard, and we all know what happens when Roy is in that position, right!!!

We are all hoping for a much better defense this year, BUT yes, tap the brakes, you need to settle down Terry.

by Deke on Sep 4, 2007 7:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not the one panicing Deke

about the loss of Newman and Ellis. The defense won't be as good early on because the loss of Ellis and Newman, but the offense will score enough points to make up for that.

SD had a great front seven last season but their secondary did not have much talent at all, we have far more talent in the secondary even with Reeves and Jones playing. Reeves I think will surprise people as that kid has some talent. I know he's going to play better than some rookie we could have drafted.

by Terry on Sep 4, 2007 8:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Your

forgetting the weakness on the San Diego defense is their secondary. Their CB's aren't very good. Our secondary is far better so Wade should be able to accomplish the same things hopefully without Newman.

by Cowboys81 on Sep 4, 2007 10:00 AM CDT up reply actions

No way

Our secondary has some real problems with Newman and honestly, questions even with him.  Can Henry play an entire season with his knees?  He doesn't have the deep speed to be a #1 CB.

Hamlin has a lot to prove.
Roy has a lot to prove also.

San Diego's starting CB's are both high draft picks (rounds 1 and 2) and Cromartie (another 1st rounder) was their 3rd and sometimes 4th CB last year.  Jammer really came on last year and finally stopped using his hands and picking up penalites.

Living in San Diego, I am forced to watch them nearly every sunday as long as they aren't playing at the same time as Dallas.

are you telling me

Drayton Florence is a good CB?? You got to be kidding me??

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Sep 4, 2007 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

In some cases I'd rather have Florence

over Henry.  It depends.  I like Henry against taller WR's but shorter, quicker guys like say in our division: Randle El, Santana Moss, Steve Smith, Sinorce Moss...I'd take Florence.

I'd definitely take Cromartie over Reeves.

by bob maplethorpe on Sep 4, 2007 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think

any of us have seen enough of Reeves to know what he can do. Henry's problems have been injury related, so if the assumption is health for any of these guys, Henry is above average. And none of them is as good as Newman when he's injury-free.

by dunkman on Sep 4, 2007 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Nate Jones

Can't understand why he didn't play more CB in pre season.  He is sooooo close to having to play meaningful snaps.

by bob maplethorpe on Sep 4, 2007 9:17 AM CDT reply actions

I saw enough of Jones

Giving up a 90 yd TD pass to a no name receiver was enough to convince me that A Glenn is the better player. I'm done harping on that subject. We should have invested a higher pick in the draft on a CB, rather than wait until the 7th round. I like C. Brown, but then they move him to FS. Meanwhile ol' James Marten looks horrible and we took him in the 3rd round with good CB prospects on the board.

Hindsight is 20/20, but it's a little frustrating. I just hope Reeves can step up and be more consistent than he has been in the past. He shows flashes but still no more than 3rd or 4th tier CB. Come on Jaques!

by APerfectStar on Sep 4, 2007 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Tom, what makes you think

a corner drafted higher would make a difference? I think Reeves would play better than any rookie no matter if he was a first rd choice or 7th rd choice.

As for the slot, Olgsby will earn that position and he manned it for the best defense in the league last season.

Reeves will be fine.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Sep 4, 2007 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I think with Newman out Reeves is #2

Therefore I'm comparing the hypothetical draft pick to Nate Jones. I apologize if my post wasn't clear.

Nothing against Reeves, I'm rooting for him, but he's been average so far.

by APerfectStar on Sep 4, 2007 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

And

Marten may just be slower on the uptake. Most linemen, and especially at the tackle position, take a while to play well at this level.

And like Terry, I'm thinking that Oglesby is there to back up the slot (in the nickel) and Jones will mainly play STs, which we all saw was in need of players.

by dunkman on Sep 4, 2007 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, yeah

Marten needs time, blah, blah, blah. The Cowboys weren't looking forward with the pick. Last year had a  lot of decent CB prospects, next year looks much thinner.

Doug Free was a much better selection and they picked him up later. That 3rd rounder should have been for a DB. IMO

I hope Oglesby is a hidden treasure that they had their eyes on. It sounds like they wanted him. All of this is moot if Newman can manage to play, which again, I think he will.

by APerfectStar on Sep 4, 2007 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually

I wanted a CB there too. I'm not really defending the pick, just saying it's way to early to use Marten as the reason it's not a good one. Him we don't know about yet.

by dunkman on Sep 4, 2007 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Oglesby

Not only was Oglesby a member of that incredible Ravens defense -- he was the nickel corner.  He saw action in every game in 2006.

Translation: We might not be seeing Nate Jones at all after Week 1.

by theogt on Sep 4, 2007 9:40 AM CDT reply actions

That's a least some good news

and I always worry less about someone who gets cut from a good team.

by dunkman on Sep 4, 2007 9:42 AM CDT up reply actions

I figure

The coaches and scouts at Valley Ranch got a lot better look at all these guys than any of us did, and, with all due respect, they are capable of making better judgments on player personnel than the fans and media put together.

Keep doing what you been doing, keep getting what you been getting.
