Hang on to Jason Garrett
As per ESPN's first take, the Cowboys have given the Falcons permission to interview Garrett for their vacant coaching position. Garrett hasn't agreed to interview yet, however. Also, they slipped in during that headline that Garrett is the leading candidate for the Raven's job.
Let's just hope Jerry can keep him around!

The price of success

I dont get it though.
Is it that much more money for someone to leave a team setup for winning to a team thats at the bottom of the barrel. Like do they leave because of money or is it the chance to turn the team around into something amazing and be known as a legend for it?

yes
or is it the chance to turn the team around into something amazing and be known as a legend for it?
I think it's this. Never underestimate the allure of potential glory. Everybody wants to be the next Landry or Walsh or Lombardi (even though that's pretty much impossible).

That's incorrect
Rex Ryan and a college coach that used to be an assistant with the team are likely coaches to take over. Biscoti the GM wants the college coach who's name escapes me right now and the defensive players are pushing for Rex Ryan. Garretts name is going to be rumored for every HC job so get used to it. That doesn't mean he will take it.

I read either on SI.com or BSPN...
... that the college coach is Kirk Ferentz, the highly reputable leader @ the University of Iowa. I believe the article mentioned that there was speculation that Bisciotti had already interviewed both Ferentz and Bill Cowher prior to the Ravens final regular season game against Pittsburgh last Sunday.

I'm Happy for Jason
I hope Jason gets a Head Coaching job. He deserves it. We lost our Offensive coach two years ago in Sean Peyton but we managed to be in the top 5 in many offensive stats. Then Jerry finds jason. Thats the key is not who you lose but who you replace him with and surround him with competent asst. and good football players to coach. We have good folks waiting to replace him in Tony and Ray Sherman. If Tony ends up in Miami we still have Ray sherman who was a offensive cord. for Minnisota in 99 and pitt in 98. He also spent time with the Green Bay organiaztion during there super bowl and San Fran during there hay days. We will be OK as long as Jerry can make good choices in finding replacements.
by jvw on Jan 1, 2008 2:10 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
good post jvw..
I agree totally... Ray Sherman would be a good fit, as well as Cam Cameron, if in deed we lose both Sparano and Garrett, and Cam is let go.

I disagree
Jasons not going anywhere!
I'd be extremely surprised to see Jason Take another job.Number 1.he's not ready, number 2 he's in the perfect position to gain knowledge and experience and number 3 Jerry is not going to let him get away,he'll compensate him well, and save him to be the new coach of the dallas cowboys when we open the new stadium in arlington sept.2009

I think Wade would disagree with you.
I agree with you on the fact Jason isn't ready, and he should stay around here to gain more experience...but it will need to be more than one more season before he takes over. He should stay around here for 3-4 more years as OC/AHC...then take over HC duties. I just hope he is thinking the same way.
Do you really think Wade signed on to be coach for just 2 seasons? He wouldn't concede the HC to Garrett,Wade signed with Dallas to go down as a great Head Coach, not some defensive guru, he has said this many times. It would be totally unfair to Wade if he loses his job just because we don't want to lose Garrett.
Jerry would be a complete buffoon to fire Wade prematurely, considering we'll probably be going at the title next year as well.If we happen to pull off an upset and win the SB this year, then maybe even win it all next year...Do you really see Wade going anywhere ? He's nowhere near retiring...that's for sure. If we lose in the early rounds this year, and next year...then you may make a case...till then....Wade is the Man.
I, for one think Wade has done a very good job, as do millions of other fans... I agree, Jerry should pay him well, and ad associate head couch onto his title, but if Jason Garrett wants to go run the show somewhere else...there is not a damn thing Jerry could do about it.

Why would jerry sign garrett
before he even decided on a head coach? Because he didn't want to let jason get away!
Wade doesn't call the shots...Jerry does!
wade doesn't get to tell Jerry how long he wants to coach, jerry tells wade how long he'll have the priveledge of coaching the boys.
I love Wade!
I think He's done a great job with this team.
But he's only 4 years younger than bill parcells!
He's been in the league for over 30 years.
BUT
He's never gonna get the credit he deserves for the job he's done this year.
Its always gonna be that he took over a stacked team and managed not to screw it up.
Jason Garrett is the future of this team.Jerry knows this and he'll do whatever it takes to keep him.whether that involves giving Garrett the assistant head coach title or paying him head coach money...he will do it!
Jason might not take over for the 2009 season...but I wouldn't bet against it.

I think your all wrong with the Wade scenerio
Wade isn't a puppet for Jerry. JG was hired to run the offense in some capacity, Jerry knew he was nowhere near ready to be in charge of the whole show.
Wade was hired to run the defense. It will either remain that way for at least 3 more years, depending on how we do in the playoffs, or JG will take a HC job elsewhere. Jerry has absolutely no authority to keep JG here if he wants to leave to become HC.

I never said
Jerry Could KEEP HIM FROM LEAVING.
I just said he'd do everything in his power to keep him. Jason is a smart man,he won't go to atlanta or baltimore as HC,both of these franchises are trainwrecks. He's too smart to ruin a promising career like that.
I never said Wade was a puppet for Jerry.
I said Jerry calls the shots when it comes to who is coaching this team.
I may be wrong,But I don't see Wade being here in 3 years, and Jerry would be a fool to let Garrett get away, then have wade retire...and leave us high and dry.

that isn't the reason trueblue
Jerry said he had to interview and hire Garrett before naming a HC because Wayne Heizinga gave him a small window in which to interview and hire Garrett as OC, so thats why the timing was the way it was.
by Terry on Jan 1, 2008 8:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
When does an owner
ever hire an OC,before a Head coach.Head coaches USUALLY bring in thier own coaching staff.Wade had JG shoved down his throat...Like it or not.
by TrueBlue24 on Jan 1, 2008 8:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
when he's forced to by another owner
by Terry on Jan 1, 2008 9:06 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Terry...I'm just saying
In 99% of the time a new head coach brings in his OWN STAFF...that includes OC! when this happened last year it was unheard of for an owner to hire a coordinator before naming a head coach. Wade had to agree to having Jason Garrett on his staff...Wade had no choice in the matter.

well I guess Rex Ryan is
not in the running now.
ESPN.com reports the Baltimore Ravens have dismissed defensive coordinator Rex Ryan as well as the rest of the coaching staff, but Ryan will be considered for the team's vacant head coaching job.
by Cowboys81 on Jan 1, 2008 6:59 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Ryan is in the mix...
by BoyzRback07 on Jan 1, 2008 7:38 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Considered
and in the mix are two different things. They probably told him that, but he doesn't have a chance now.
by Cowboys81 on Jan 1, 2008 9:27 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It had been reported....
That the defense was totally on board with Ryan, and there would be wide scale revolts if he wasn't hired....so...we'll see....maybe the chaos will land us Terrell Suggs...wishful thinking.
by BoyzRback07 on Jan 3, 2008 3:28 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Ever consider this....
I think Garrett is a little different that most HC candidates. Because of the fact that Garrett is younger, less experiences in various capacities and probably hasn't reaches goals that he's set for himself as a coordinator, did it ever occur to anyone that Garrett might pass on HC opportunities to gain more experience while waiting for the right situation?
Look at the situation that Mike Tomlin walked into in Pittsburgh compared to what Cam Cameron is dealing with in Miami after just one season. I'm guess that if Cameron got the HC job in Pitt and Tomlin was in Miami the records probably wouldn't be that different from what they stand at today.
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Garrett interviews for the experience, but declines any offers that he receives this year. Certainly the Ravens job now becomes the most coveted out of the three open positions (Miami, Atlanta and Balt), but I just think Garrett is smarter than the average Joe that is looking to make a splash as a HC. He certainly has time (youth) on his side, so there's really no need to him to jump into a situation that isn't right since he's got lots of years to establish his legacy as a coach.

I agree
Jason won't put himself or his reputation on the line, just for the sake of being a HC. IMO he'll hang with what he's got right here.Theres no real pressure on him.If the offense rolls,he gets the credit,if the cowboys falter its Wades fault,I'm not saying its right, but that will be the public perception.
As i've stated,I'd be very surprised if he left .

Ditto
Garrett can interview with these teams, that doesn't mean he's going anywhere. Garrett will replace WP when he steps down. WP will not be fired, but he's not a young guy. I subscribe to the theory that Jerry hired Garrett with the gentleman's agreement that he would take over after WP retired. WP was brought in to take the defense to the next level and a last shot for him to win the Superbowl.
I think WP will be here at least one more year. Then Garrett will take over as HC, Stewart remains as DC.

Gentleman's Agreement
I think there's something like this in the works.
Someone may be able to correct my memory, but my recollection is that not only was Garrett hired before Phillips, but that JJ said that he'd be either HC or OC. (For the 'he's not ready' true believers, JJ seems to think that he was ready last year.) If JJ felt that Garrett was going to be the next big thing in coaching, he wouldn't risk losing him for having Phillips around for a few years. (And consider Phillips' reputation at the time this played out. He was considered competent but nothing special--no playoff wins, etc. Certainly no one you blow off an up and coming coaching prospect for.)
The weak link in this idea, of course, is that Phillips went along with it. It's much easier to believe that Phillips would be willing to be assigned an OC in exchange for the HC position (especially for a team that made the playoffs the year before and underperformed in the process). It's a lot harder to swallow the idea that he'd be willing to be shoved aside after a year, especially after a successful year. Conceivably, he just wanted another season or two before retiring...but I admit that's a stretch, and one I don't have any proof for. But it makes more sense to me than the idea that JJ would be willing to trade away JG at the beginning of his career for WP at the end of his.

Gary Kubiak
There is precedent for an assistant to spurn HC offers to remain a coordinator. Kubiak stayed in Denver to coach under Shanahan even when he was the next big thing.

Fargo...I agree ...
And I've felt that way the whole time....I believe he sticks around...Not only does he need more experience, but he will need to show that he can run the offense by himself now, if and when Tony Sparano leaves for a HC job...
by BoyzRback07 on Jan 3, 2008 3:31 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The timing of this is going to be very strange
Of course, that would depend on Garrett leaving first. I am thinking that Sparano wants to wait (of course, that might not be a luxury he can afford) to see what Red does first.
by huslinone on Jan 2, 2008 3:50 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Sparano goes...
If someone offers him a head coaching job why would he wait to see what Garrett does? I think he'd jump at the HC job rather than wait to see if he could be the OC here.
Hopefully none of the HC openings appeal to Garrett and he stays on another year.

by huslinone on Jan 2, 2008 4:27 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
To quote BSPN's Lee Corso...
... not so fast my friend.
Tony Sparano is considered an FOB (Friend of Bill), and history shows that the Big Tuna ALMOST ALWAYS brings players and coaches that he's had previous relationships with.
And because of that, Sparano becomes the front-runner as HC of the Miami Dolphins.
by kcbrett5 on Jan 2, 2008 5:06 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
If Sparano bolted to be a Offensive Coordinator..
He would need permission and we would be compensated....He is the Associate Head Coach....OC would not be a promotion....Jerry knew then when he put that title on him this year...He needs to be hired to be HC...or no dice...
by BoyzRback07 on Jan 3, 2008 3:38 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Wait a second....
Cam Cameron and Bill have a common denominator as well....just not sure that Bill considers Cam an FOB!
