unbelievable
I don't know what to say.
The entire season was dissolved to a few key plays and some bad calls by the officials.
I am distraught.
The giants did not deserve a win in that game.
I don't know what else to say.

Yes they did
Their DL absolutely destroyed us in the 2nd half. They deserve the win.

it pains me to say it
but I agree. The giants made plays when they had to, the Cowboys did not. If Crayton makes that catch on 3rd and long, the whole game is different

Eli didn't beat the Cowboys... Dallas beat Dallas
by Mullin on Jan 13, 2008 6:56 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
No disrespect, but I thought Eli did manage...
... the game well. They maintained their balance on offense, which put less pressure on him... and Manning did not make any mistakes.
Plus, our O-line has played better games, but our blitz/stunt pickups were sub-par. Not to mention, Jacques Reeves. How many early drives were kept alive because Eli threw to Steve Smith -- their 3rd WR, who's covered by Reeves.
And how did Amani Toomer get so open on both TDs? I love T-New, but Toomer was his man on both of Amani's TD receptions. Newman is so much better than Toomer, so that truly boggled my mind.
One more thing, how were they able to run effectively early in the game? I thought our D-line got off to slow start, and there was a lot of early missed tackles. In a game like this, you can't take any plays off. As the game wore on, our front seven played a lot better, but unfortunately, that's when our O started to stutter.

Time to move to the draft
Atleast we know we won't have the last pick of the first round :P
p.s. this sucks. have to wait another year just for another opportunity in the playoffs.

49 points in the last 4 games
The offense just fell apart after dominating all year.
The defense gave us a chance at the end, and the offense couldn't capitalize.
Penalties killed us all year, and in this game.

A bunch of those penalties were not called
on both sides of the ball. NYG had only two.

We beat ouselves guys
What I realized more than anything this game is we need another play making WR. If it's not TO than it's nobody. Crayton is a possession WR nothing more. We need another threat at WR.
MB3 showed me alot today, but we need another RB that can make plays.

Don't Blame Romo For This
A stupid sack and a dumb grounding penalty was all he was guilty of.
The Cowboys were an undisciplined team today. If you want to blame the coaches, what the hell ever.
PATRICK CRAYTON SHOULD SHOOT HIMSELF. Gutless. Gutless. Gutless. Two ridiculous drops, a fumbled punt return, and did anyone see him stop on his route on 3rd down? Had he kept stride Romo would have hit him perfectly.
Julius Jones will not be back. Roy Williams should be flat-out cut. He is a waste of money and space.
Our special teams has sucked all year. They Pat Watkins and Tony Curtis allowed a huge punt return.
Jacques Reeves is not an NFL cornerback. He should be bagging our groceries.

I'm not a coach and I'm not a Xs and Os guy
but it seemed like this was a colossal failure all around. The defense was inconsistent and couldn't stop Eli's passing or force him into a turnover. Special teams was horrible. Was MB3 tired in the 2nd half because of his increased workload in the 2nd? Too much Crayton, not enough Owens. I am serious when I say please cut Crayton. He has made more than one significant drop this season and this game is just another example of it...add that to the fact that he is the only receiver on the teams that runs his mouth. I just didn't see enough of Owens or Witten. I didn't see any variety in the playcalling, either offensively or defensively. Romo...gives up two sacks and then gets an intentional grounding? You'd think he would know the rules by now. Just a horrible game all around. I think everyone can share the blame for this one. Given the last couple years, I see next year ending in a very similar way unless something is done in the offseason.

What a Disgrace
Most embarrassing Cowboys playoff loss. Ever. Nothing even comes remotely close.
I shouldn't be surprised, because we looked horrible the last month, and teams can't just turn on great play like it's a water faucet. I was confident of my opinion then, but it's blindingly obvious now. It still stinks, though.
I hope our dozen Pro Bowlers enjoy watching the playoffs, knowing they couldn't beat the worst surviving playoff team. At home.

Thanks
Grizz,
First time poster, long time "troller". Thanks so much for providing informative and in-depth news about our 'Boys. You've been a highlight of the season and I always look forward to logging on to your website.
I have nothing to say about this game except we were a victim of ourselves. Second half: terrible playcalling, terrible offense, terrible everything. Woohoo, we're up to 13 years!
I'm disgusted, sad, angry and resigned to another off-season of playing "what-if"?
Hopefully, we'll shore up our secondary and get another run next season.
For all you haters out there, please remember this - we had the best run in many a season. Romo is the bomb and he's OUR bomb. It doesn't make this loss any less bitter but we're still diehard fans who are already plotting what needs to be done to get us to the promised land next season.
Thanks again Grizz and I look forward to your next post. Go Pack!

by Dawkins on Jan 13, 2008 7:00 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
TO had 4 o 5 catches; 1 TD; and several drops.
He looked pretty good for what he's been through,
by Wharter on Jan 13, 2008 7:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
We played too conservative
the whole game. At no point in the game did this offense look like the offense of the first 12 weeks. It was dull and non-explosive. The defense gave us plenty of opportunities. It's like the Cowboys were afraid to pass the ball. Maybe Jason Garrett isn't as good as we thought he was. Tony Romo is now what Peyton was before he won the Super Bowl.
by bryangene on Jan 13, 2008 7:01 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Actually, I liked the game plan. We just...
... didn't execute.
When it was 14-14 and we had the ball in the red zone, Fasano drops a perfect pass at the goal line from Romo.
Then, Romo throws a horrible pass to TO when Owens had clear space in front of him to run after the catch.
Again, when we were down just 21-17 with more than 5 minutes to go, all of a sudden we start acting like we're down by more than one score and feel the need to pass on every down. MB3 barely touched the ball on our last two drives.
There was a lot of blame to go around. Yes, Romo did do some bad things, but let's not discount some good things he did and some bad things other Cowboys did.
This was a team loss... at the worst time of the year.
And I agree with el paso fan who said "I bet we won't hear about "meaningless games" in December.
One more thing, I don't wanna hear about this turn it off, turn it on sh__ anymore. Hear that kind of talk was a recipe for a one-and-done upset.

by jvw on Jan 13, 2008 7:10 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I can't believe I didn't break anything
But let's get real here.
When it comes to public perception, Romo's gonna be known as a choker.
That's two consecutive playoff games where it's one and done with #9 not coming through when we've needed it.
But keeping it real, Patrick Crayton better keep his da__ mouth shut from now on. Two freakin' dropped passes right there where Romo perfectly laid them out.
TO with a drop on that go pattern.
Fasano with the drop at the goal line -- yes, the DB swatted at it, but it hit the F-man in the chest and bounced away.
And did Tony lose his mind on the second-to-the-last drive.
I mean Aikman hit it on the nose when he said that when he Romo rolled out of the pocket and could've legally threw it away, he didn't.
When he had no pressure and no one open, he illegally threw it away.
Yes, the Giants get credit, and deserved to advance. But we helped them by beating ourselves with dumb penalties, mental mistakes, and dropped passes.
If I had to keep score for Cowboys I yelled at the most, here's the score:
Jacques Reeves - yelled at 5 times
Tony Romo - yelled at 4 times
Patrick Crayton - yelled at 3 times
Terrell Owens - yelled at 2 times
Anthony Fasano - yelled at 2 times
Roy Williams - yelled at 2 times
Flozell Adams - yelled at 2 times
Marc Columbo - yelled at 2 times
It's safe to say that practically have no voice right now.

Let me see
If I can make some observations without totally losing my composure.
I simply do not understand how this happened. We dominated time of possession, and yet failed to protect our QB in the second half.
Stupid penalties galore. I don't know what went through peoples' heads.
Ware is unbelievable. That ray of sunshine is unfortunately obscured by all the clouds, but it is a mighty ray. We can build a defensive unit around this guy for the next five years.
I love Barber. I absolutely adore the guy. But It's never been clearer to me that we need another running back. He can't take 25 handoffs and remain productive.
How the hell do we not complete a big pass all game long against a secondary that beaten up?
Crayton was awful. No way around it. Unbelievably bad.
What stands out to me more than anything?
We allowed the Giants to drive 70 yards in a minute and a half to end a half.
EXPLETIVE.
yeah, couldn't stay composed.

Ok, let's get out all the media points...
- Keyshawn will rip T.O.
- Parcells is somewhere gloating
- Wade 'will be fired'
- Romo = Cabo, = can't win a big game
- T.O. dropped passes
- Cowboys first team to lose a home game in this format since 1990
- etc.
The thing which really drives me nuts is how much ESPN, the NY Media, etc are going to gloat and rub this in. I think that we would have had a tough time winning the SB with how badly our D is playing, but this loss really hurts and it will be held over us until we win a ring.
I'm pissed, but not as mad as I thought I would be. I think it's b/c I know we're not ready to win the Super Bowl with how we're playing right now, at least not against the Pats.
I will be rooting for Green Bay and San Diego.
I'm just pissed that the Cowboys hating media was 'proven right' on this, and I feel bad for Romo and hope this doesn't hurt his development.

Dallas beat Dallas.
I knew the Giants TD at the end of the first half was a bad sign. The penalties and the increasingly poor pass protection and the drops show that they just weren't into it. TO was wide open in the second half when they had to settle for a field goal--and that was the difference in the game?
Great going, you 12 Pro Bowlers. Maybe you'll win a playoff game someday, long after Wade Phillips is gone.
Trying to destroy the play clock after a TD was a totally classless act that should have cost the Giants on the next kickoff. Yeah, the Giants won, but the Cowboys would have shot themselves in the foot against anybody.
Two terrible playoff games in a row!

For what it's worth.
I think it's becoming more and more obvious that Romo has eaten the cheese when it comes to his abilities. I can't believe the two sacks and grounding penalty. He starts off great because of the humble pie (He was a backup, the Seattle loss) he gets on a roll, but then he starts thinking his *&%^ doesn't stink, loses focus and we lose. You are not a top QB until you win at least a playoff game, so stop acting like one.

How can you not take advantage of 3 missing CB's on an already suspect secondary.. Try using max protect two tight end sets, put TO in motion, over the middle that was wide open all day..I am completely humiliated. My phone is ringing off the hook...
Thanks alot Jason Garrett....MBIII 28 second half points, TO 1 second half catch, Witten totally under utilized, Crayton....grrr..Crayton...bad time to pick your worst game............................

This year, it was poor execution. Either a WR drops a pass or the pass is a bad one.

I sure hope you Wade supporters
are right out there...haven't seen Dallas look this unprepared or unfocused in a while...
To me, the worst thing that could've happened was go 13-3 under Wade, cuz that makes JJ say things like, "Wade's job is safe, no matter what happens in the playoffs."
Whatever you do Wade, don't hurt anybody's feelings in the locker room tonight...

I know it's hard to tell, but really, our HC is the perplexed-looking dude on the sideline.

I'm frustrated, too, Starred. However...
... as much as you never know when you'll get back to the playoffs, most of our key players are fairly young.
If the King doesn't perform stupidly in the draft and in offseason FA signings, we should have some pieces to compete again next season. I would love for us to use all of our picks and not trade any of them away.
And one -- or maybe two -- of our first three picks (two first rounders and one second rounder) needs to be on a talented corner.
by kcbrett5 on Jan 13, 2008 7:35 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i think the first pick
should be CB unless the value is not there, which I doubt. This has to be one of the deeper classes of CB's in some time. RB is also deep and we need to spend an early pick on a speed back to spell Barber.
by nonotmenever on Jan 13, 2008 8:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
We need a lead back
Barber isn't that, he's a complimentary back. Barber had a great game today in the first half, there is no doubt about that, but he's not a lead back. He probably had two years taken off of his carrier today with the pounding he gives and takes. You cant continue to do that week in and week out. The second half, he was 11-28 yards after 16-101 yards in the first half, our running game went down hill quicky, the giants made the adjustments and stayed in their lanes wary for his cutbacks.

Not a surprise to me at all
The Giants were thee most dangerous team in the playoffs in the NFC, I didn't want any part of them with the way they played down the stretch. I had a very bad feeling about this game all week. Hats off to the Giants, they were well prepared and played a mistake free road football game.
Dallas has some work to do on defense, besides two very nice drives by the cowboys, they were horrible the rest of the way, too many drops, too many mistakes and too many penalties. Cant turn it on like a light switch.

Shared the same concerns, Deke
I liked our game plan, but I despised the execution.
It's tough enough to beat a team like the Giants, but it's tougher when you beat yourselves, as well.
I gotta admit, that BOTH NY COORDINATORS -- Gilbride and Spagnuolo -- had brilliant game plans, but the difference between them and us is that their players executed and didn't beat themselves.

Tony Romo
shouldn't be blamed for this loss and I think the majority of people will see it that way as well.
I think more now than ever I realize that we need a back in the draft that can carry the ball with MBIII, it was the right thing in letting him start but we need somebody better that can take some carries away from him without sacrificing production.
Also, Crayton is getting bashed, and deservedly so, but he did fill in for Glenn this year reasonably well.
I am also very proud of the fact that Owens didn't become T.O. the distraction. I know how pissed I would be if I worked my ass off like he did just to lose the game like they did.

Most embarrassing loss in team history?
Given our record and seeding, this might qualify.
As I said above, I'm not crushed because we are not playing well enough to beat New England in the Super Bowl.
Still, it was a pathetic loss, and for all the jackazzes in the Cowboys-hating media to be 'proven' (that is, they picked against the Cowboys because they hate them and they lucked out) right makes me ill. Keyshawn, Gary Myers, all the New York media, ESPN and Fox Sports Radio can kiss my behind.
That's what really pisses me off here. And, I don't want Romo to lose any confidence.

they just didnt go strong into the playoffs

that TD before the half was the beginning of the end
still romo had the chance to win it, as great qb's do
but he's not a great qb (yet)

crayton - just shut up

Cowboy Please, considering that
a FOX honcho leaked to the papers up here that they wanted to the Cowboys to win because you guys are a better story with the personalities you have and the Giants are boring. Not to mention every football show in the world has at least one Cowboy on the set. I wouldn't be so fast to play that disrespected line.
by DoctorK16LovesTheGiants on Jan 13, 2008 7:26 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Silly argument
Of course Fox executives want the Cowboys in. The Cowboys bring in higher ratings. Something like 4 of the top 5 cable shows EVER are Cowboys games.
And it's not too hard to figure out why there are so many Cowboys in the booth. Generally, famous players or players from good teams try it when they retire. It just so happens that the Cowboys who have tried it have worked out well (Troy on the number 1 team, Moose on the number 2 for Fox). They let Young, Montanna, Deion, and Emmit (among others) try, too, but they aren't as good at it.
That doesn't mean that coverage can't be skewed one way or another. Just like it was pretty obvious for a while that Joe Buck didn't like Randy Moss for the 'fake moon', it's also reasonably apparent that there are times when Troy will avoid taking the Cowboys side even when Joe does because he doesn't want to appear biased.
Besides, that, being a Cowboys fan is similar to being a Yankees fan. You know that you will make a lot of headlines and have a lot of media coverage, but a lot of it will be people hating against your team.

Green Bay will destroy New York, IMO.
If San Diego were healthy, they would have a better shot at New England, but I think they still will be ready b/c they hate NE.
Green Bay has a chance with New England b/c GB's offense is so explosive.

we can start by opening the exit door for:
Jacque Reeves-fa
Nate Jones-fa
Roy Williams-cut or trade
Allan Ball-cut

Trade Fasano, Williams, Austin, and Carpenter to either Detroit(Roy Williams-WR) or Cincy(Chad Johnson-WR) or highest bidders.

Three points in the entire second half? T.O. disappears? Against an injured Giants secondary? In a playoff game?

Absolutely the worst play calling and execution I have seen in years!!!
Whats is with throwing the ball to Crayton when you have Owens and Witten/ Not to mention Barber. Crayton cant catch a cold!!!
Owens didnt have one pass in the second half.
With a dilapidated NY secondary there should have been heavy doses of Witten/Owens over and over again.
How many more 'on the numbers passes' does Crayton have to drop before the coaches realise this.
Romo is another story, what is with throwing the ball away when no pressure and holding on to it while being sacked?
This team never ceases to amaze me with their screw ups.

Frankly I'm not surprised, nor all that upset...
actually!
A few other Boys fans and I were talking this week at work, our fears (well founded it turned out) were these:
a) Romo needs to grow up a little; putting himself in the whole Jessica Simpson imbroglio nonsense, was totally stupid...
b) Crayton talks to much, he needs to shut up!
c) This OL gets a lot press/publicity; they are NOT as good as they think; that showed in the 4th Qtr!
d) I'm very "iffy" about Wade Phillips...
e) Jason Garrett is good, but he's NOT "great" yet; he has to grow up too! Hopefully this will end all the HC job talk about him
f) even IF they had won; it was still a stretch for them to also get past GB, and then into the SB
g) whoever gets into the SB, opposite NE Patriots, is going to be nothing more than a Speed Bump for the Patriots.
Frankly, I'd rather have the Cowboys lose in the Divisional round, rather than lose in the SB!
h) IF the Cowboys had ANY OTHER GM than Jerry Jones, they'd look at this and say: "Wow, despite the fact we were 13 - 3 in a weak NFC, we still weren't good enough, I've got to make this team better via FA and the Draft, and get VERY aggressive about it; more Playmakers on Defense in the Secondary, more help on the OL, and a STUD RB to help/compliment Barber, and 2 or 3 STUD WR's to compliment TO (if he doesn't self-immolate after this loss!)
Unfortunately, because we are stuck with Jerry Jones, his approach, as he as always proven in the past is: "Wow, we're the best team in the league, and we're only one or two bad plays away from the SB, so I'm going to not sign anyone decent in FA, and I'm going to run the Draft myself because I'm a great talent evaluator, and that will be that, and this team will start a long, slow, inevitable decline!
Just a word about the game; Romo has been "off" ever since he hurt his thumb a couple games ago.
But, the real game changer, in this game, was the fact that the DEFENSE HAS to hold the Giants, with ONLY 46 seconds in the First Half, to either a FG or no points!
That's just foolish, and that was the difference in the game!
That, and a bunch of dropped passes (Crayton, and "hands of stone" Fasano!)
by Dale in Atlanta on Jan 13, 2008 7:41 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
last drive
at the end of the first half, I thought was the game changer for us. After almost a ten and a half minute dominating drive, our defense let the Giants go down the field in less than a minute to tie the game.
As for the Superbowl, I think its going to be Green Bay and New England, and I really do think the Packers have the offense that can beat the Patriots in the superbowl, but will have to play like the Giants have the last two games, MISTAKE FREE. I thought the Packers were thee best team all season long in the NFC.

We both agree about Romo
To some degree. I frankly don't see it happening while all the offensive pieces are in place, assuming Glenn's done, a new impact WR or two come in to help T.O. (if he stays) and the O-line is shored up.

In light of the recent contract
What are the chances of a Romo trade? Seriously, if the contract is like a marriage - and you just bought your girl a 3ct. ring and a huge house - does that mean you're stuck with her forever? What if it turns out the woman likes teenage boys in her middle school class?
Romo has too much to learn before the Cowboys can do anymore than a 1st or 2nd round playoff game. Cut bait now and see if Atlanta or Miami are sucker enough to take it. I would take Romo if he were another Danny White and the rest of the pieces never fell into place but in all honestly, he's not even that good.
- For the record I'm not just venting, I've dogged Romo for short-arming passes, throwing short or behind his receivers and basically just acting like an arrogant all-pro Arse from the day he first started.
- You can act like you have a life outside of football and everyone can take it or leave it AFTER YOU HAVE WON IT ALL.
- Throw it so your receiver can catch it in stride - don't celebrate when you get bailed out over and over and over again. (Today's exception: Crayton)
- Learn the Intentional Grounding rule - that's part of your job scope. Feel free to stick around town and go over the rules prior to performing said job.
- Going to the sideline looking for a cap/knit hat to hide your ears tells me you're more concerned about your new-found "coolness" than the job at hand. Grow up a little.
- Remember how only Jessica Simpson's dad would give you the time-of-day before you signed your PHAT contract? Think about it.

Some Stats
We outgained the Giants by over 100 yards from scrimmage, 336 to 230.
We had over 150 yards rushing.
We won the time of possession battle by 13 minutes, 36:30 to 23:30.
We ran 71 plays to their 44.
By any conventional measure, even taking the last interception into account, we should have won the game pretty easily.
Wade is still winless in the playoffs as a head coach. When the game mattered we showed little poise or discipline. That's got to change.

I hate to say it
but there was some questionable play calling by Garrett. Not only today, but the last few games.
The final play of the game was really a bad decision by Romo. Glenn was never open and double covered.

I don't blame Romo
he had a couple of off passes, but it was more the drops by the wide receivers and Fasano, the O-Line penalties, and the defense choking at the end of the second quarter that lost this game.

How much more of this will it take, Jerry?
Yes, I enjoyed those three Superbowls, I enjoyed them very much. But that was a LONG time ago. Whenever there is a recurring problem, I always look at the constant. The only constant here is that Jerry has been making "football" decisions. When do we get a real GM? This team has been your best post-Jimmy, but obviously not good enough.

These are the Cowboys. This is not Buffalo or Minnesota. We measure ourselves by championships, not pro-bowls. Everything else is just crap. I don't doubt Jerry's desire to win, he is a GREAT marketer and promoter. That is obviously where it ends.

teams that win get more probowl selections
it doesn't mean the GM is doing a great job. He let Bll parcells change this franchise as an organization from top to bottom, it was clearly broken, now with Jerry back runnning the show, you are seeing an exodus from this organization from the front office and coaching staff, thats concerning and for Jerry to say its not a big deal and he's probably not going to hire others to fill those spots, smacks you in the face he's pulling the strings again and thats never a good thing.
Ireland, Gaines are gone, I would think the following aren't too far behind, Sparano, Bowles, Pasqualoni, an possibly Garrett..

cost us the game: penalties and dropped passes

Oh, and I forgot the Penalties..
and STUPID ones too!
Ware's in the fist half, basically gave the Gints their fist TD.
Bottomline, this team has been undisciplined for 3 - 4 years regarding penalties; it was bad under Parcells, and it hasn't gotten any better.
During the Regular season, they got lucky a couple of times, and overcame them; in the Playoffs, it's all magnified, and they were killers!
Ending drives, and causing punts.
So, again, I'm not upset, no one is stopping the Patriots this year, and I'd rather lose in these rounds than go the SB and lose there, that would be too much to bear.
Again, IF we had a real GM, I might be positive that the Cowboys would use this as motivation to get BETTER in the Offseason.
But this Jerry Jones we're talking about, the idiot who engineered the '94 Draft, where he said "We have so much talent, we can't draft any potential starters!" so on purpose, he went out and drafted all Back-ups!
Look it up, the idiot actually did that!
That was actually the beginning of the end of the franchise.
They won the SB the next year on inertia, and it was downhill, drastically, from there on.
Parcells, for all his faults, and they were many, and I'm glad he's gone, and he was a bad coach, actually did bring some good talent to the team.
But this team is NOT as good as we all suspected, because of a weak NFC.
So, IF we'd have a real GM, it might motivate us to pull a Patriots, and go out and sign 3 - 4 key FA's to bloster the OL and Secondary and WR corps, and to draft the best WR & CB's we possibly can.
But I'm afraid with Jones in charge, it's going to be the '94 draft all over again!
Watch Jones' post loss statements this week, to see if he actually has a clue, that will be the indicator which way this team will go in the future.
As for the game, I liked the new approach with Barber, but I find it very strange they weren't able to get the ball deep at all, with TO and TG on the field; very strange.
Penalties, Penalties, Penalties, and that stupid drive given up to the Gints at the end of the first half.
Final thought: the Giants are fools; they won against an underperforming Dallas team, and they think they're a good team?
It's a joke, this is the same lala land that the Redskins live in.
The Gints are NOT a good team, and the Packers will spank them next week!
Eli isn't fit to carry his older brother's jock, and the Colts got spanked today; Eli will get destroyed next week; can't wait to watch it.

What are you smoking, Dale in Atlanta? Have you forgotten how far down the toilet the Cowboys were when Tuna took over? Do you think Wade will ever be a hall of fame coach like Parcells already is?
The truth is, Wade so far has only been a caretaker for the team Parcells built. Next year he can take credit for any success he achieves , if any.
By the way, I like Wade, but let's be honest...he has yet to distinguish himself as a head coach.

A lot of the problem....
...is the way they played like crap im December. That is the time to really get things clicking, get in a groove. That is not the time for one of the worst QB performances by a starter on any team in recent memory, or lackluster play on offense period. They didn't get hot when they needed to.
On the upside, I think the team (the parts of it that will be back next year) are going to be more focused and mature because of this. I don't think Tony has peaked; he is still growing. I AM proud of the defense, because they seemed to play a lot better as the season progressed. The drive right before halftime excluded.
The O-line broke down because the Giants pass rush wore them out. I don't recall anyone getting that kind of pressure on us all year. All credit to the Giants; they came to play and they deserved the W.
I don't get our game plan. Would have been better to start Jones and use Barber later as we did all year, in my opinion.

RE: A lot of the problem
I think you hit the nail in the head with the offensive line problems. The Gmen came after our offense hard, fast and often. Many times, with the camera looking at the line of scrimmage from behind TR, you could see Giant defenders coming at Tony unblocked and from different directions. They threw everything but the kitchen sink at our offense and they simply could not pick up their schemes fast enough. They could not adjust, but I still say it was Jason Garret's fault for not shortening the field for Romo to release much more quickly.
The one thing I also noticed is that the GMEN Dline had a lot of respect for Romo in that even when they grabbed him after throwing a ball, I did not see any of them hitting Romo with the intent of hurting him. I commend them for that. They played a clean game and for that they earned the win.

tony romo has all these records, just like danny white in the 80s. it just proves that records don't mean jack unless you win critical playoff games. tony does not have the balls to win a playoff game as he showed tonite, just like danny white could never take his big stats to the super bowl. i will put my money any day on real "leaders" like troy or roger. tony, you have "star sick" syndrome and until you fix that, you will continue to be the danny white of the 2000s. after tonight's loss, i am OUT on romo and phillips. i will become a parcell's miami fan!

I dont get all this slamming of Romo
for todays game, was it his fault that our receivers dropped the ball or our O-line not protecting him and giving him time to throw the ball, was it Romo's fault that our O-line took too many penalties, this game wasn't on Tony Romo, if anything our O-line ran out of gas, which shouldn't of happened, with three out of our first four series, it ate the clock up and put 17 points on the board with long drives and it was the O-line that wore down and not the Giant defensive line, that makes no sene to me, conditioning was the issue on the O-line. A team that dominated that first half and first drive of the second half should of easily put the Giant defensive line away.
by Deke on Jan 13, 2008 9:41 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Right Again, Deke
No comparison between Romo and White. Danny had lots of passing yards, but threw interceptions by the truckload. Romo is much, much better in that regard.
Romo obviously still has some maturing to do, but he played a pretty good game today. The rest of the offense hung him out to dry. His offensive line just collapsed in the second half, Barber showed he isn't anything more than a complementary back, and the receivers showed little concentration.

Wilford Romo?
The thing that reminded me of the Danny White era today was the way we gained 15 yards and then went backwards 10, gained 8 yards and went backwards 5, etc., etc. Danny threw a nice ball, but he was a statue and didn't have anywhere near the talent that Romo has. Tony's still young, and will hopefully have enough opportunities to lead this franchise to a title that he'll avoid the "you choking dog" moniker. This season is eerily similar to the 1983 campaign, though.

RE: Danny White of the 2000's
I don't understand your comment. In all fairness to Danny White's failures, he took the Cowboys to the NFC Championship three times, the first at Philly (1981), and no doubt they were outplayed. The second time in San Francisco (1982), and he was not on the field to defend 'the catch'. The third in Washington (1983), Dexter Manley comes on a stunt and knocks him out of the game with a concussion.
In all fairness to Tony Romo, I think we have all been guilty of short sightedness in forgetting that this was Tony Romo's first season as a starting QB. In spite of the Cowboys failure to advance in the post season this year, he had a great year and yesterday's game was not lost due to TR's misplay alone. There was plenty of that to go around.

Cowboys need a new D
The Brokebacks played a good game. A couple things crop up. No way can you let a team drive the length of the field in one minute before the half. Killed all their momentum.
Cowboys need a new Special Teams coach. Have a great kicker, great punter, need players who can tackle. This points out a significant difference between how the Brokebacks manage the salary cap and how the G-Men do. All Players matter, can't devote too much to any one player or position. This shows up on special teams in that the last 5-10 players on the roster are at or close to the minimum salary for the league. Why do you think the Giants have David Tyree, who is nothing more than a Special Teams Guru but has been on the team for 6 years.
It hurts right now, but Boys will be back, this is part of the maturation process of a quarterback. I tell you this now, going into Green Bay, I wish I had Jason Garrett calling plays rather than Gilbride.
Cowboys are a very good team, unfortunately 11 of the 12 teams that make the playoffs end the season with a loss. Try to remember the dominance the Cowboys showed and look forward to your new stadium next year. It should be awesome.

Time to look forward to the draft
Wow, what a disappointing year. I thought last year was bad, but at least we were the lower seed. To lose at home as the #1 seed in the first round is painful. And to the Giants no less. I'll have to endure a lot of Giant heckling now.
After a loss I normally try to replay the game in my mind and figure out where we went wrong and what would fix it. This one is tough, as parts of our team that are normally strong failed us.
First and foremost, the o-line had their worst game of the year. Our run blocking has been hit and miss, but I've never seen our pass protection so poor. I wasn't thrilled with Romo's play, but anyone under that kind of constant pressure will have issues.
Romo did miss some passes, but he also made a couple nice plays, including the Crayton drop that should have gone for at least 30 yards. If Crayton runs out that fly pattern late in the game, Romo is probably being hailed as the hero right now.
So what needs fixing? Some of the suspects of today's game (o-line, Romo, Crayton) are core players, so you probably just hope they had a bad game and will bounce back. Here are the things we need to address:
- Roy - He wasn't a glaring weakness today, but he proved again that he's turned into an average safety. I don't see him reversing the trend and returning to greatness. He has either lost the will to dominate, or lost some athletic talent. With Hamlin capable of moving to strong safety, and Watkins and C. Brown in the wings at FS, its time to say goodbye.
- Cornerback - I thought Reeves was a pretty good third corner, but the fact is, while he's often in the neighborhood, he rarely makes a play. With Henry constantly battling injuries, the time is now to draft a young stud (or two). That gives him a year to get ready to start while serving as the 3rd corner. Reeves has peaked and he's at best a #4 cb/special teamer.
- Running back - Julius is as good as gone. A quick, shifty running back who can return punts would be a great compliment to Barber. The draft seems to be deep at RB. Rice from Rutgers and Slaton from WVU pop to mind as fitting the mold.
- Wide receiver - The problem is we have two old receivers who can both be #1s, and then a bunch of young guys who haven't proven to be anymore than a #3. I'm not sure Crayton can be an effective starter without a stud like TO on the other side. I'd target him as a #3 guy for the future. I think TO has several good years left in him, but we need another threat (treat Glenn as gone and get a bonus if he comes back). Maybe Stanback is that guy, but I don't think you can bet on it. A 2nd rounder on a raw explosive receiver sounds about right.
- Ayodele would be a great backup LB. Carpenter seems like a guy whose strength is football instinct. That doesn't show up when playing one or two snaps here and there. Ayodele is solid, but not an impact guy. Its time to let Carpenter or Burnett have a shot to start.
- The D-line might need some shuffling. We wondered about Canty and Spears before the year, and at least one question was answered. Canty will be a fixture at his end spot. Spears was ok, but I think either Hatcher or Ratliff might be more productive as the starter at DE. One intriguing thing was that Spears looked pretty good at NT for the few snaps he had. I could see him pulling a Ted Washington and packing on another 60 pounds and becoming a plugger.
Sorry for the long post, I needed to do something after reading every Cowboy story on the net. What a tough pill to swallow, I'm gonna go have a drink.

Reeves-ality check
Wow, there are a lot of raw feelings here, and for good reason, but there has to be some recognition of reality. Here are a few thoughts from a newbie who's really enjoyed watching and reading this blog throughout this season:
My first thought is that while the Cowboys were a very good team this year, in this NFL, no matter who you are, there will always be several games that are close and can swing either way based a play or two. Think for a second about the Buffalo, Minnesota and Detroit games and that if the key plays that won those games don't pan out, we're talking about a fairly average 10-6 team instead of a dominating 13-3 team. We were on the short end of a play or two today and that's all. That's how close the competition in this league is.
My second thought concerns the stumble down the stretch. In the NFL, more than any other league, injuries play a huge part in the outcome of a season. With the exception of Ferguson (who wasn't really missed thanks to the excellent play of Jay Ratliff), Glenn, and maybe Newman, the Cowboys managed to stay pretty healthy for about two-thirds of the season and were able to capitalize early in the year against teams that had significant injuries (the Giants, Bears and Redskins immediately come to mind). As other teams got healthier during the year, however, the Cowboys began to get hit with the kind of injuries other teams had earlier in the year. We lose the entire fullback position and the running game suffers. Newman and Henry struggle with injuries and we get burned with big plays. Davis and Gurode get dinged and the pass protection suddenly isn't as good. Owens tweaks his ankle and the big plays dry up. The entire landscape can change with a few key injuries, and that's how it goes. As most teams got healthier throughout the season, the Cowboys got less so. Teams aren't stupid and they'll expose your weaknesses — especially when they've already played you twice and realize that Jacques Reeves can't cover my grandmother.
My third thought concerns the premature anointing and subsequent beatdown on Jason Garrett this season. This is Garrett's first season as a coordinator on any level. Take a minute to think about that—he's never called a play for anybody before this year. Ever. I think it's safe to say that he got some mileage out of the fact that defensive coordinators didn't have any way of knowing what his tendencies would be until he had called enough games to give them something to gameplan against. By most accounts, Jason is smart and talented, but he's also young and inexperienced. That caught up to him this season as, late in the year, defenses came in prepared to take away what he likes to do. I'm mystified at why any team would offer a guy this green a head coaching job, and am hopeful that he'll learn from this season and will be back in Dallas next year with some experience under his belt.
My final thought is that people who say "we beat ourselves" don't understand team competitions. A game consists of constant adjustments based on what the other team is doing. We ran effectively in the first half, but the Giants took that away in the second half. In the second half, they forced the Cowboys to throw and made a gamble that they could get to Romo before our receivers could get downfield. They won that gamble. When you play a team sport, you're not on the field by yourself — the other team tries to force you into doing things that you don't want to do. It's no mystery that the Giants' strength is their pass rush, and they used that strength to win the game today. Pressure creates mistakes. Most of the Cowboys' penalties came as a result of trying to deal with that pass rush. The Giants weren't super-impressive today (the offense did almost nothing), but they deserve credit for playing to their strengths more effectively than the Cowboys played to theirs.
It was a fun, but ultimately pointless season to be a Cowboys fan. Hopefully, we'll make it back next year with better results.
Congratulations to the Giants for winning the one that matters.

Really it was two people, Reeves and Crayton, those two are just horrible. Who said Crayton had the best hands on the team? Bunch of fakers.
Wow, I can't believe you guys lost. After all that and its one and done. Really? Thats gotta be tough. Oh well, maybe next year Romo will be a good QB and the Cowboys will win a "big game". I guess I can't relish beating your team after all.
