Look to '08-'09

I can't think about this game anymore. i can't think about the past season anymore. It's too frustrating and it breaks my heart.

So, I need to start looking forward to next year, if just for my own sanity. Here is a brief synoposis of how I want this offseason to go.

Star-divide

  1. Re-sign our own free agents. Obviousely number 1 is Barber, gotta get him locked up. Then Canty needs to get locked up. He is a beast and only getting better, and perfect for the 3-4 scheme. BTW, can anyone think of a better draft pick during the parcells era? Maybe Ware, but he was high on everyone's board. Canty fell to the 4th (? i think) round cause of his eye and his leg, and MAN did he pan out as hoped.

Also, resign Flozell. He is getting up there in years, yes, but he is still a top 6 or 7 tackle in the NFL, and those DO NOT grow on trees. McQuistan looks good (from what I hear, never really seen him play), but I guess he can maybe play guard for a year of two until he can take over for Adams. Doug Free also looks to have potential, but neither are in the same galaxy as Adams, or will be for at least 2 more years. Must re-sign The Hotel.

2.Let some baggage go. As much as I have always supporterd Julius Jones and admired him for beign a good soldier as his touches dwindled over the past two years, I could not blame him if he couldnt keep quiet another year. He needs to go somewhere, like Houston, where his talent and character can be appreciated. I really hope he succeeds somewhere else, and I will always root for him. BUT, as my bartender always tells me, "you don't gotta go home, but you can't stay here".

Also, please, get Jauques Reeves and Nate Jones and Alan Ball, and all these other "project" cornerbacks that we pick up at the end of the draft OFF THE TEAM. Since 2004 it seems like we draft one or two corners at the end of the draft every year, and none of them pan out, and it KILLED us this year when we had no third corner after letting Aaron Glenn go. Which leads me to my third point...

  1. DRAFT A TOP TEIR CORNERBACK!!! Holy Moses, it seems like very year, we go into the draft with a need for CB depth, and come out with seventh roudners instead of an Aaron Ross, or a Reggie Nelson (i know hes a safety, but still) or a  Kelly Jennings, or an Antonio Cromartie (picked one pick after Bobby Carpenter BTW). If the cowboys don't pick Talib, or one ofthe Jenkins', or McKelvin, or some other cornerin the first round, i'm going to burst. I'm not going to say any of the three guys I just mentioned is who they should pick. They have scouts who are very good at what they do, and I'm sure that the ones who don't defect to Miami will be able to determine which cornerback we should pick.
  1. Don't trade up for a RB. Wait for our second first round pick, which won't be as high now (single tear) or even our second round pick. Also, draft a WR who isn't a project or just a guy who can return kicks. Steiback and Austin can return kicks. We need a RECEIVER, not a Receiver/Returner.

5.Bring back Hudson Houck. After Sporano leaves, we'll need someone to kick those big guys in the rear end. They have so much talent, they just need continuous reminders to remain deisciplined.

  1. Jerry Jones, I implore you, don't go backwards and start beleiving your own hype. No drafting Quncy Carter or Duane Hawthorn. Listen to your people (the ones who haven't defected to Miami yet). Develope more scouts. Bring back Larry Lacewell if you have to. But don't think you can do it yourself. You've come so far since three straight 5-11 seasons in the post Jimmy era. Don't go backwards! PLEASE!!! LISTEN TO YOUR FOOTBALL PEOPLE!!!

That is all. It feels better to look forward. THERE IS ALWAYS NEXT YEAR, and it seems these Cowboys have a bright future.

Here are a couple of corners I like:

Tracy Porter - Great coverage skills, is an int machine, and can help out with punt returns.

McKelvin - Excellent coverage skills and is a Devin Hester like returner.

If for some reason we don't take a corner in the first round I would want Rogers-Cromatie.  Tall lanky corner that plays with the agility of someone 3 inches shorter than him.

MY Top CB's

1a  CB Reggie Smith OK Height: 6-1. Weight: 198.
40 Time: 4.47.
Projected Round: Top 20 Pick -
His versatility can only increase his draft stock; he can play corner and safety.

Smith doubles as a return specialist and triples as a potential free safety. Had a fumble returned for a touchdown against Miami this year.

2   Dwight Lowery, San Jose State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 185.
40 Time: 4.38.
Projected Round: 3.
An interception machine, Dwight Lowery led the nation with nine picks in 2006 after registering 13 in 15 games at a Junior College

Terrell Thomas, USC
Height: 6-1. Weight: 200.
40 Time: 4.40.
Projected Round: 1-2.
A jack of all trades, Terrell Thomas can play corner, safety and return specialist. He also returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown in 2006. The leader of USC's locker

Charles Godfrey, Iowa
Height: 6-1. Weight: 208.
40 Time: 4.35.
Projected Round: 3.
Charles Godfrey, who is tied for the Big Ten lead in interceptions at the beginning of November, has an incredible 40 at 6-1, 208 pounds. He's a guy who could shoot up draft boards if he has a solid combine

so who or what you going to trade

to get  him

By the way, there are a lot of people who believe Leodis McKelvin will be the defensive back who shines brightest at the Combine, earning himself a spot in the Top 10.

Leodis McKelvin, Troy State (12/28)
Height: 5-11. Weight: 187.
40 Time: 4.38.

I like McKelvin and Rodgers- Cromarte in rd 1&2

Porter is alright, has great speed, from what I read, he can be very inconsistant ...has good up side, and more than likely be available in late 2nd-3rd round.

As much as I want Felix Jones at pick #22, We might be forced to dive in at CB right there...

Malcolm Jenkins, many figured to be the first CB selected, is leaning towards returning for his senior season at OSU..personally..I think it's foolish on his part...but I respect his decision, and will definately be a top 5 pick in the '09 draft, although I had him going top 10 this year if he declared.

That moves all the top corners way up the charts.Thankfully guys like Justin King-PSU and a few other top notch DB's decided to come out early, although many felt they should of stayed in school...This only saturates the first few rounds with top corners...Now it all depends on which teams were in desperate need, and planned on taking a corner in the first round... Teams ahead of us like Detroit, Cincy, New Orleans, Arizona, Buffalo, Baltimore, Houston, Carolina all could use a top DB.

We can only hope 1-2 CB's are picked before #22, cuz the picks after that, 23-31 I don't see them going after a corner. This way we can select Felix Jones early at #22, and come back at #30 and take a top 3-5 CB, although we'd sure have to worry about late first round trades coming ahead of us. Either way.

If Felix Jones or a Jonathan Stewart, or Desean Jackson aren't there at #22....we should possibly use both #1's on CB's, and still get a decent running back in the second round.
Oh well...guess i have toooo much time on my side thinking next season already...this sux....

anyways.....alot will be determined during free agency period and scouting combine...It's all I have to look forward to.

CB's

We definitely need a CB. But I think we should consider signing a veteran CB if we can. We need smart players.

Our biggest defensive weakness is my boy Roy Williams. I mean he honestly can't do anything anymore. He can't cover, and he can't even tackle anymore. We play 10 on 11 on defense.

I say we let Flo go. A great lineman does not commit those stupid penalties constantly. Let him go, use the cap space on a defensive back.

#1 re-signing should be DWare

like many of the "experts" said yesterday, he's a one man wrecking crew and one of the best if not they best defensive player in the league.

Lock this guy up for his entire career, Jerry and do it fast.

Amen. Besides, I've invested in...

...an appearance fee, an authentic jersey, a digital camera & personal photograph with him, an autographed football, and two professional quality pics of D-Ware.

So other than DeMarcus playing for my favorite NFL team, I have a literal vested interest in him re-signing with da Boyz...

many many CB's in this years draft.

We NEED to draft TWO TOP CB's, One of our #1st and our #2nd.

We all have our favorites....but most of us have no glue who these guys are. Hopefully our scouting department will be deeply involved in evaluating every DB in the draft. Then select the best two available at either pick #22, #30, and #60....

I still want us to take the best FA CB available. Either Asante Samuels, Marcus Trufant, and hopefully available Nnamdi Asomugha.

Before for all you homers get all worked up with this suggestion, keep in mind all three of these guys are considered better than Terrence Newman, and Anthony Henry. And I'm someone that agrees with that. Especially Asomugha of Oakland, who I consider the best CB in the league, over Champ Bailey.

We NEED immediate upgrades throughout our secondary. Newman and Asomugha at corners, Hamlin-SS and Henry-FS, with our top CB picks coming in on the nickle and dime packages and playing special teams...Or switch Henry back to corner, and have Newman cover the slot during nickle situations...with Watkins or Brown playing the FS positions during nickle and dime...

Oh but wait/....we need to sign Newman after '08 season???? sure...a 30+ CB with skills is not nessassarily our biggest priorty after next season, DeMarcus Ware will be. We sign Ware next year, and if we need to, we franchise Newman to get another year out of him without laying out huge signing bonus money... I am sure by 2009 season, one of our two top round rookies can fill in admirably for Newman if he can't be resigned...and we'll still have a very young Asomugha playing opposite of him...
IF I owned and ran the Cowboys...that's exactly what I'd do.

I would't mind drafting two corners early at all

but you're not getting Trufant or Samuals via free agency, Trufant will be resigned in Seattle and Samuals just cost far too much especially when Newmans contract is due next year and with the money we're paying Henry, although I've been touting for awhile moving Henry to free safety and Hamlin over to strong safety.

Trade up a few spots to get ahead of Houston and draft Jonathan Stewart, thee best all around Back in the draft.

by Deke on Jan 14, 2008 6:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Deke..i've been hearing different.

I have heard Seattle will not be resigning Trufant, they have guys in his place to take over..

Again...why not pay for Samuels ? Newman would be expecting about the same money...

Everyone keeps saying resign Newman etc etc...I think Samuels is better, and we can always franchise Newman after next season, keeping him here through 2009, when he'll 32-33...

Do you really think Newman is going to sign for only 2-3-4 year contract ?? no way...he's gonna want 5-6 years.....well...who wants a 34-35 year old CB that has already showed signs of bad feet, knees, etc....

It makes sense to wait on Newman to see how he fares these next two years...If we lose him after 2009, who cares ?? we'll have Samuels and our top rookies to handle the blow...

If we don't resign Flo, Reeves, Jones, and cut Roy, Ferguson, and Glenn, that alone is enough freed up money to sign both Samuels and Newman....

I'd be very surprised if Seattle lets him walk

especially a corner of his talent in today NFL, they might franchise him to see if they can get him signed to a long term deal.

I think Samuals is all about money, he wants to be the highest paid corner in the NFL, he's eyeing a Clement type deal in the 100 million dollar seven year deal, out of cowboy price range.

I dont have any problem signing Newman to a five or six year deal, he'll be thirty starting next year, his foot injury was a freak injury this year that requires a month or two of rest to fully heal, he's got plenty of time now to get the rest his foot needs, other than his foot injury, when has the guy missed anytime, I cant recall, he's a workout machine, keep himself in great shape and there's not alot of wear and tear on his body, as long as we keep him off the punt return team. Henry is the guy I worry about staying healthy for a whole season.

If Flozell would accept a two or three year deal at moderate money, then I say sign him, but I just get tired of hearing the comments from the game yesterday on the FOX broadcast that its acceptable to the cowboy organization if Flozell gets a false start or two every game, that to me is unacceptable.

Jones can hit the road as far as I'm concerned, Reeves can stay only as a fourth corner at a low signing, one year tender deal, but I dont want him anywhere near the number two or three spot on the depth chart, he's an alright fourth dime, zone corner.

I think ferguson will be back for another year to platoon with Tank in the middle, I think ratliff moves back outside in the 3-4 and tackle in the nickel.

I think Glenn will retire and have Micro fracture surgery on his knee.

As far as Roy goes, what can you do, his cap hit would cost far too much for the cowboys to flat out cut, there will be serious discussions at valley ranch about that position this offseason, I think they'll try to trade him during the draft, but that probably wont happen, but I think cowboy fans better get used to the fact that this upcoming season will be Roy's last in a cowboy uniform, as I think he'll be cut after next season when the cap hit is manageable.

I just dont think Dallas will be big players in free agency this year, maybe a mid level player, corner or receiver but not a big name guy. I think they'll concentrate on getting their own players they want to keep resigned, like Flozell possibly, Hamlin, Canty and Barber, search for a few coaches and then get ready for the draft.

Its going to be a long offseason....

oh..PS...Felix Jones has declared for draft!!!!!!

IF we don't sign MBIII, we are in serious trouble..There is most definately teams out there that would give up a 1st and 3rd for him....don't kid yourself...It's a very good possibility.

I say we pay up for Michael Turner in FA. 3.5 a year is about what I think it will take...well worth it...
I'd give MBIII a similar offer, maybe 4 mil per year. Platoon both, They are both RB's that need a compliment, I can see Turner going to another team, but he is not going to be the "exclusive" back no matter where he goes...Are there any teams left that use strickly one RB ??? I don't think so....why not go to a winner like Dallas...

If not, We NEEEEEEEEED to draft Felix Jones........

Did anyone watch the SD/Indy game?..and watch Turner gain 5+ yards virtually every time he touched the ball..alas MBIII  well....Darren Sproles comes in and goes off for 43 yards on a flare pass outside to the left.(that's exactly what Felix Jones would bring to the table)..

take your pick...Turner or Jones.......we need one or the other.... I would be extremely upset if neither are playing for us next year.

1st and a 3rd for MBIII

I don't see anyone giving up a first and a third for a running back who is not elite.  That would be crazy.  I love MBIII, and I think he is a very good NFL running back, but I'd take a 1st and a 3rd for him every day of the week, even if it is New England's 32 pick in the rounds.

This is a passing league now.  You've got to be able to consistently put up 30 points a game to truly compete for a super bowl.  Rare indeed is the running back that can be the centerpiece of an offense that consistently puts up 30 ppg.  But the opposite is true:  you can have a very successful offense with an average running back.  The hardest part of building a super bowl quality offense is finding a franchise qb.   We have our franchise qb, as well as a franchise TE for the next 5-8 years.  What we need to do is invest in offensive linemen and wide receivers.  An extra 1st and 3rd could go a long ways toward solidifying two more very important positions for the next 5-8 years.  If someone is crazy enough to give us a 1st and a 3rd for MBIII, then Dallas would have three first round picks and six picks in the first three rounds.  We could draft two cornerbacks, two wide receivers and two offensive linemen in the first three rounds.  That would pay off huge in the next five years.

Yeah, I'm with you there Louie

Barber is a good back, not elite and not an everyday starter, but I cant see anyone signing him and giving up a first and third round tender for him. I dont think dallas will want to allow him to get even close to a tender situation, probably working on getting him signed in the next few weeks, atleast I hope so.

Tender might be a good thing

I wouldn't be surprised if Dallas did not sign MBIII right away, and instead put the tender offer out there just to see if someone bites at giving up the draft pick(s).  The really interesting scenario would be if Dallas only put a first round tender on him, not a first and a third.  I wonder if anyone would jump at that.

I'm not a big proponent of signing running backs to long-term contracts for big money. I think it is one of the easiest positions to fill with a lower round draft pick, and the money saved can be put to better use elsewhere.  New England has been plugging in running backs for five years now, and one can make the case that they wasted a first round pick on Moroney because they really didn't use him that much this year.  And look at the Packers:  this Ryan Grant kid comes out of nowhere and provides a nice little running game for them, all for minimum salary.  There are too many injuries and cases early burn-out for running backs to risk making them a centerpiece of the offense and paying them big money.  Just my opinions; I'm sure there are others who are all for signing MBIII to a five-year deal, and that perspective has validity as well.

by Cowboy Louie on Jan 14, 2008 8:46 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

wait so

we're going to have zer0 RB's next year? Or are you planning on picking up 3 of them after round 3? JuJo is gone, I highly doubt Tyson Thompson makes the team, and  you just sold MB3. So uhhhh where's our RB's?

by sublimezg on Jan 14, 2008 9:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

...Michael Turner-FA and Felix Jones #1 round.

If we happen to lose MBIII to free agency, and receive a 1st and 3rd round draft choice as compensation we shall,

  1. Use maybe a 4th round pick on RB/Tashard Choice to complete the backfield...IMO, It would be a better overall backfield than this years unit.
  1. Use the 2 other #1st rounders on CB's Leodis McKelvin & Antoine Cason,
  1. Our second rounder on WR, DJ Hall,
  1. Our 2 3rd rounders on Owen Schmitt-FB, and Josh Barrett-SS......

 easy as that ?

Finding a RB

I think that finding a running back or two in the mid rounds of the draft is a relatively easy thing to do.  I also think that signing an average running back or two in free agency for low dollars is easy to do.  You can also trade low round picks for them, as Green Bay did with Ryan Grant.

I know I'm going to get slammed on this board for the following, but I'll say it anyway. I would rather sign JuJo to a low dollar 2-3 year contract than sign Marion Barber to a blockbuster five year deal.  Again, it is just my opinion on where to spend precious salary cap dollars.

So, to directly answer your question, I think Dalllas could find several servicable running backs through mid round draft picks, low-profile trades, free agency and resigning JuJo.  Again, this is predicated on my opinion that running back is a low priority position.
