Garrett leaves Baltimore without accepting Ravens offer
Jason Garrett left the Ravens facilities and is presumably headed to Atlanta to talk to them. At least he hasn't accepted anything yet and Jerry is willing to match the money.
Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett left the Ravens training facility in Owings Mills today without accepting the Ravens' head coaching position.
"It's been a good day, but I'm going to continue on with the process," Garrett said.
Garrett was headed to the airport, and presumably Atlanta, for a second interview with the Falcons. He is also considered a front-runner for the head coaching job there.
Garrett's options reportedly include the Ravens' head coaching job and the Cowboys' counteroffer, which is said to match the Ravens' salary to remain the offensive coordinator in Dallas.
Hat tip to Long Ball for alerting me in the comments.

Smart idea to assess his value
I think JJ will match either offer, so Red going to Atlanta doesn't bother me.
Red knows he can continue to build a contender quicker here, than trying to start to reclaim a break even or 1-2 game improvement elsewhere.
Thanks JJ

I hope so
My fear was he'd accept Baltimore's offer, but now that he's left, I feel a little better. He might just be getting as much as he can with Jerry's blessing and will join us back here a much richer man. Of course, I could be totally wrong.

Let him go
Redball express average what.....15-17 points a game over the last five games(2-3)
the real loss was sparano!

Can't agree
I think Garrett is a very talented coordinator with a bright future although I will miss Sparano.

I think Garrett
Got alot of credit that sparano afforded him. He made no(zero) adjustments sunday, abandoned the run(when we were never dsown by more than 4)and left Romo in the shotgun,a sitting duck for NY to tee off on.
Garrett did nothing to avert this. Not one play-action call, not one rollout...this against one of the few secondaries in the league worse than ours!
I think he showed he's not ready the last third of the season. If he can't get it done with OUR talent...GOOD LUCK WITH THE RAVENS(hahaha!) or the falcons!

Garrett
I think we have yet to tap into Garrett's potential..

So y get rid of him?
by Mullin on Jan 15, 2008 5:50 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I never said fire him
I said if he thinks he can get the job done in balt.or atl. when he can't get it done with all our offensive weapons....then let him.
the way I see it,he's gone anyway.
I'd love to have him back
BUT
I do think he's getting alot of the credit that rightfully was due to sparano.
If Garrett was such a guru why didn't parcells go after him?
He knew better than to believe the hype.
As fans we should too.
the only reason everyone is so high on garrett is his buddy aikman has been pimping him as an offensive guru since late september on national TV on a weekly basis.
He's nowhere near ready to be HC!

That's how I feel
Garrett had a great year for his first year as OC and now, despite that his offense completely crapped the bed in the playoffs, he is ready to run an entire team? Frankly, after the Pats assistant turned down any interviews and watching Garrett this last week, i have lost a lot of respect for him. Sporano I understand more because the guy has truly paid his dues but methinks Redball's head is getting a little swollen. Turn in a postseason win before we break out the anoiting oil.

Parcells didn't want Garrett
because according to Jeff Ireland, Miami wants a coach that both he and Parcells are familiar with:
...But none of them have direct ties to Ireland or Parcells, and Ireland has said it's important that he and Parcells be familiar with the new coach.
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7...
Garrett isn't a Parcells guy. The fact Parcells didn't bring him to Miami for an interview says nothing about his abilities to coach.

So you'd be okay if Garrett
starts a bidding war between ATL, Balt and Dallas and JJ would have to pay him more than Wade for him to stay? I'm sorry, I was under the delusion that Garrett was a football guy not just somebody trying to get the most $$. I am losing respect for this guy by the minute and if wants to make his millions with a horrible atlanta or balt team then let him. I am almost at the point that I don't want him back as his true colors begin to show.

Yeah, I'm prefectly OK with it
I have nothing against someone going out on the market and looking at jobs. Nothing at all. Garrett's ultimate goal is probably being a head coach so he's investigating it. Jerry seems OK with that and with spending more money to retain him.
I have all the respect for Garrett and find nothing wrong with him checking out other jobs and perhaps getting more money to stay in Dallas.
by Dave Halprin on Jan 16, 2008 8:41 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Of course
Garrett has a market value that's clearly higher than what he's getting right now. Would you have a problem if he left to go be a head coach somewhere? I wouldn't, and that's why I don't have a problem with him asking Jerry to match. If Jerry doesn't match, you can be sure that Garrett is gone; that he didn't already sign with Baltimore is probably a sign that he'd rather be the Cowboys HC in a couple of years.

Well like I said
I had a misconception of the guy so I am starting to care less and less if he leaves. I have no problem with him upping his value and trying to get the most $$ he can for his services but I have a large problem with him putting his new job over his current job and being a big part of the reason the cowboys lost last sunday. I'll say it again, the two guys who spent the bye week interviewing were the two coaches of the units (offense and O line) that lost the game on sunday and that is not okay with me.

going to Atlanta would be
a huge mistake for Garrett. That franchise is a mess. They have no cap space to do anything.

has anyone mentioned
Jerry Jones and his latest screw up? Alot of people on the air today talking about how Jerry put two Championship tickets on each players lockers two days before the game. What a bone head move by Jerry and a total distraction for Wade and the team. It also leaked to the Giants and fired them up. I thought Jerry grew out of this type of stuff, but I guess not. Way to go Jerry!!

Spags says this about it:
...The truth of the matter is when tickets were distributed by the team’s ticket office for this game, the tickets for a potential second home playoff game at Texas Stadium were included for expediency sake . . . just like everyone else in the organization.

matching Garrett's offer
I'm still on media blackout for football ;) but I did happen to flip past PTI today and caught a mention of JJ matching the Raven's offer, and they said that would put him higher than Wade, and it would never happen to have a Coordinator (or Asst. Coach, I guess, if he was given that title), paid more than the head coach. Is it possible this could happen?

Colts
I haven't been watching the coverage, but I haven't seen this mentioned here - one thought occurred to me is that the Colts lost in a very similar way. By the same margin - 1 FG matched by a TD. Like the Cowboys, they basically gave the game away. To a team beat up by injuries, in their case with the Bolts' QB and star RB out. Peyton showed lack of composure and leadership. There's really an odd parallel between these two Sunday games. Maybe Peyton should have done something else with his bye week? Dungy and Peyton are defending champions, so of course they get the benefit of the doubt that they've done it before, so we know they can do it. But even a defending champion elite team with a highly respected coach and unquestionably elite QB is capable of blowing it, losing focus, not executing, and losing to a lesser and beat up team. That's the NFL, it happens. It is part of what we love about the game. The real question for the Cowboys is what they learn from it, to figure out how to prevent it next year.

Sure...
Sure, we love that about the game... unless we're on the receiving end.

Good point
Now, I would say that the Colts looked a little sharper and were undone by turnovers near the endzone, but it's a fair point. I've thought of them several times in the past few days in an attempt to feel better about our choke job.

The colts get the benefit of the doubt
but should they? Of course, they won the SB last year but for the offensive output they have enjoyed over the last several seasons, they have one ring and multiple chokes. Not to mention that had R. Caldwell not dropped a sure first and goal pass in last year's AFC championship game, they might not have even got one ring.

Grizz you should change your countdown clock
The Senior Bowl comes before the combine.

Hope...
I really hope JJ knows his worth and is willing to match the offers, and that Garret is willing to stay here instead of take the job in Baltimore or Atlanta... someone tell him that at least here he'll be winning.

I know it happens all the time but...
It pisses me off that our coaches are considering/interviewing for other jobs when they should be focusing on the teams that they are on. Does anyone think we would get Norm Chow? I don't think he had much to work with at Tennessee. It's obvious Garrett doesn't want to be with Dallas so I think we should let him go.
