Miles Austin as CB?

What would you guys think of converting Miles Austin to a cornerback?  He obviously has hands of stone, but that shouldn't be a problem for a CB, who just needs to break up passes.  Isn't that what a CB is, anyway, a WR that can't catch.  If they could catch and run routes, they'd be wideouts and not corners.

He even could still return kicks for us, like TNewman used to do.

Anything to get Jaques "the human target" Reeves off the field.

I'd rather just draft a guy or two

or sign them in free agency who already play CB.

I agree Grizz... I'd let Austin go....

Hopefully WR will be taken care of in FA and not the draft. Two CB's in the draft, and a mega CB signing in FA. IMO, there is no room for Miles Austin on this team. He will not make the team next year.

disagree there

He will be on this team. He is the best kickoff returner on the team and a very good special teamer. He has tremendous talent and speed to play the position and only getting better. He is not going anywhere. He just has too much pure talent to let go. Stanbach will be gone before Austin believe me.

I agree

that austin will be back.Hell he's the only one we have that has a hint of speed to him. Also he'd have been one of the league leaders in KO returns if he could juke a kicker or two...LOL

He obviously had a bad game in washington BUT:

He obviously has hands of stone

I think is unwarranted
Has everyone forgotten the KO return in seattle in the WC game last year that kept us in the game?
Remember that detroit started kicking away from austin in this years game.Don't discount how many big returns he has for us to set the offense up in good field position.

As a CB.....NO,we need a real one
as a reciever and ST player...He'll be here next year or maybe we can draft another skyler green to replace him(sarcasm)

If Felix Jones is drafted...

His chances of making the roster will be weak...and if we draft a WR or pick one up in free agency...then what ? you guys are overly estimating his ability. He just barely made the team this year..He is our 6th or 7th receiver on the depth charts....you think we'll bring in a receiver via draft or FA that is worse than him next year ?...I don't think so.

lets count

TO
Crayton
Hurd
Austin

"6th or 7th receiver "

I don't think so

but I agree we go after a CB in FA we do not want a Rookie starting

CB Florence

plus I like Bryant at WR in FA

prolly not

but we can draft a corner who is better than both.

you know I never watched him play

but he's one we could afford

Marcus Trufant, UFA, Seattle Seahawks - made money with his play in the playoff
Asante Samuel, UFA, New England Patriots - want mad money

I saying is that he knows Wades ways maybe that puts him a Dallas UNI - plus he won't cost us an arm and a leg

Randall Gay UFA New England Patriots
just don't know enuf about him

but puttin a rookie out there is dangerous

I don't think we need to sign a FA

we just need a third corner, and that is the perfect opportunity to develop a first rounder.

we need a good solid veteran with experience that we can count on. Not a rookie that is going to make a ton of mistakes.

Agree with 81

Our Defense are some solid DBs away from being one of the NFL's Elite Ds.

One solid vet (like maybe Trufant) AND a CB with one of our two first rounders.

That's my wish.

Florence is not an upgrade at CB..

2008 projected WR Depth Chart-
1)TO

2)Free Agent/Trade- Bryant Johnson/Roy Williams/Chad Johnson/Baskett/Berrian

3)Crayton--better step up

4)Hurd-last chance to unseed Crayton

5)Stanback-will be fully healthy

6)ROOKIE WR Drafted before round 4

7)Austin-may have to fend off FA/undrafted rookies to retain a spot.

Nah

This team has plenty of depth at WR. They lack the players who are ready to step in, though, and that's where a Berrian or Roy Williams could fit in.

by Or Moyal on Jan 15, 2008 6:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

thats what I mean

people are worried that we wont have a spot available because of the anticpation of a FA WR signing or a first round pick. Glenn will be gone so carrying 5 WR's again will not be a problem. Drafting Stanback was a big mistake and I can see this kid being cut next training camp.

will probably turn out to be one of our best picks ever.

by Terry on Jan 15, 2008 9:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I totally agree Terry....

And that's something i seldom do...lol..

This upcoming year Stanback will be completely healthy, and will have gained much experience working with Ray Sherman and being tutored by some of the best WR's in the game....just on tapes that i've seen of him I already can tell he will turn out to be a gem...He will be one of the top 4 receivers on our team next year. I do not want us using a top 3 rounds draft pick on another mediocre WR to wallow in the latter depths of our WR corp.

Either sign a FA or trade for a top notch WR, or wait till the following year to grab a WR.

If we can't find someone to come in immediately start across from TO next year....why bother ? we are not looking to add depth at the position...We are looking for a starter..and no...Crayton is not a #2 WR....never will be.

How can you say that?

I certainly can't agree with any thought of Stanback being a #1 someday.  Even the best scenario would be a Randle El and he's not even a #1 WR.

Nothing against Stanback, but I haven't seen enough yet.  He's got great size and speed, but he still has a mountain to climb.  Stanback is also one of the reasons that we need Ray Sherman to stay right where he is....and that's as our WR coach.

by Fargo Cowboys on Jan 16, 2008 8:19 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

thats not true

you can't compare Stanback to Randle El, 2 completely different type of receivers.

I'm not saying he doesn't have a ways to go, but so did Romo when I predicted he would become great someday.

by Terry on Jan 16, 2008 8:21 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Please name another QB converted to WR...

...that settled in as a true #1 WR.

I'm not saying that it can't happen, but it's very unlikely.  I hope I'm wrong, and I like Stanback, but I'm skeptical that he can ever be one of the top WR's in the league (which is what I would expect from a #1 on a Super Bowl caliber team).

Not comparing the styles of Randle El and Stanback...just comparing the transition.  Randle El in my mind, is one of the best (and quickest) transitions in recent history to a solid #2 WR after playing college QB.

by Fargo Cowboys on Jan 16, 2008 8:31 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You're right Fargo

It is very unlikely. Stanback has the potential to be a contributor, and maybe do some special things down the road. But I don't think he'll be a number one. Maybe if I predict this right I can come back later and tell everybody about it to show how smart I am!

Again..

Not comparing the players, but the successful transition from collge QB to WR.

Ronald Curry, Brad Smith, Reggie McNeal, Drew Bennett, Randle El....am I missing anyone?  I don't see any #1 Wr's on this list....just saying tall or short, big or small, the odds are stacked up against Stanback.

Its unlikely he'll be a number 1

But considering what Crayton has become and Stanback has better size and speed, I think there is a good shot he'll become a very good number 2.

Burt-D

by Burt D on Jan 16, 2008 9:38 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Durability?

If size and speed were everything, all the WR's would be 6'4" and run 4.4 40's.

I think at this point in his (Stanback) career, one would really have to question his durability.

There are all-american WR's taken in the first 10 picks of the NFL draft that can't make the transition, so to project Stanback as a #1 or #2 WR at this stage of his career is simply without merit.

by Fargo Cowboys on Jan 16, 2008 9:48 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

All WR's aren't 6'4 and don't run a 4.4

because that is an extremely small segment of the population.  Go back to the '07 draft and find me the number of people who are 6'2 or taller and run under a 4.4 in the 40.

Secondly like I said it isn't a longshot especially considering Stanback came to the University of Washington as a WR prospect, but he convinced his coaches to let him play QB.  And look what we did with Crayton and he doesn't have the size or speed of Stanback.

I just think there is a very good chance he'll be at least a number two one day.

And just because he had one injury doesn't mean he has bad durability.

Burt-D

by Burt D on Jan 16, 2008 9:57 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

More than you think...

There are more than you think.  All you have to do is watch the WR's at the combine to see all these great athletes.

Stanback had a major foot injury in college and then suffered a shoulder injury this year.  Although I will say that the shoulder surgery this year was minor compared to the foot injury and that Stanback was forced to the IR because of the numbers game with the roster.

I don't have a problem with your assessment that he could develop into a nice #2.  I certainly hope that you are right.  Most of my concern is that we need to be patient with Stanback and not pass on a WR in this years draft because we feel he's going to be a future #1 ro #2 in this league.

by Fargo Cowboys on Jan 16, 2008 10:45 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No its not more than I think

Go down this list and find me five other players that are at least 6-2 and can run the 40 under 4.4.

There may be three and two of them were first round picks and all three of them were first day picks.

Boldin was a QB in college wasn't he?
And isn't that who everyone was comparing Stan to?

Anquan Boldin?

Just saying, he was a QB.

by grapejoos on Jan 16, 2008 10:11 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Good call...

...Boldin was never really an accomplished college QB (due mostly to off the field issues), but there is a great example of a player that came in with limited experience as a WR, made the transition in training camp and is now one of the best in the league.

That would certainly be the ceiling for Stanback, and we can only hope and pray that he can develop into the player Boldin has become.

okay, Fargo how bout Hines Ward

is one of the best WRs in the league, SB MVP and Steelers #1 WR.

Not to mention Stanback's physical skills are much better than Ward's, has much more talent.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Jan 16, 2008 1:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Ward and Boldin...

...are great examples and certainly #1 WR's...but for every Hines Ward there is a David Schockley.

We all know that Stanback has the athleticism, but so does Reggie McNeal (6'3", 4.31 - 40).  Is there a player out there that has the heart of Hines Ward? or the unbelievable strength of Anquan Boldin?

What I've contested is that the probability of Stanback developing into one of the leagues top WR's is very low.  While I certainly hope that he can, I would not count on it and my point is that we still need to look at addressing the WR position on the first day of the draft and not pass on the position because of Stanback's athletic ability and promise.

The other issue with a player like Stanback is that it can take 2-4 years to develop him at a new position and then you have the issue of him becomeing a RFA and ultimately a UFA before you have to try and determine his ceiling for potential and long-term value when competing against other teams that might have a greater need for WR or more cap space.

by Fargo Cowboys on Jan 16, 2008 1:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you that

Stanback becoming a great #1 WR is not a sure thing. I only predict it because I think his athletic ability, character, and willingness to learn are off the charts.

Romo as undrafted FA QB had really long odds in becoming a franchise QB, but it happened.

But you're right, if you see a great prospect in the draft, you have to look at him, but I think Stanback will be a player in this league, I wouldn't discount him just because he was a QB in college.

In Romo we Trust

As exciting as the prospects are for Stanback...

... the '08 training camp will be the first step towards seeing what type of damage he could do on da field.

But for now, we're still in "wait and see" mode.

Good to see more people coming round to Berrian
As far as Stanback is concerned, I feel he deserves at least one training camp to show us what he's got.

by goodjobtimmyheresabluestar on Jan 15, 2008 9:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Anything to gain?

Does anyone watch the Bears play?  Berrian is very fast, but he struggles with press coverage and his hands are below average.  Cowboy fans should remember him dropping a sure TD in our SNF game against the Bears.

You would be better off signing the Vikings Troy Williamson for much less money and see if Ray Sherman can work some magic.

by Fargo Cowboys on Jan 16, 2008 8:16 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

Berrian has hands of stone.  We already have a #3 WR who can't catch.  Berrian does have speed, and I'd take him, but not for any significant amount of money.  I'd rather roll the dice on a guy like Williamson.

by meangreagle on Jan 16, 2008 1:20 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Just like Williams...

He's just like that Williams kid that we had on the roster a few years ago. We were enamored with his rare combination of size and speed, but after 3 years of development, he wasn't a consistent performer at the WR position.

I agree that he's effective enough on special teams that he can make the roster, but I don't see Wade keeping 6 WR's ever year, so if we draft just one WR and Glenn is gone, Austin could still be history if our rookie WR can return kicks.

As far as the CB idea goes, that's never going to happen.  Austin is a long strider and any scout can see that he would never convert to a corner.

by Fargo Cowboys on Jan 16, 2008 8:13 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Hines Ward

Was a QB at Georgia and is now one of the best receivers in the league. Now, not saying that will happen to Stanback, but give him time. I'm also not saying we shouldnt draft a receiver. We should. Glenn won't be back, and we need a guy to be our number 3/4 along with Stanback behind Crayton and Owens, and best case scenario, becomes a starter in a year and puts Crayton and Stanback as our 3 and 4. Then, when TO turns 37 two years after that, we still have 3 experiences receivers, and hopefully another young guy. Obviousely Hurd or Austin would have to be cut after training camp, proably keeping whichever is better on special teams (Austin) and having our Receiving Corps look like this:

1.TO
2.Crayton
3.Rookie/Stanback
4.Stanback/Rookie
5.Austin/Hurd

Not too bad.
