Assistants?
I know we've done a lot of speculating recently (anything to get our minds past the playoff loss) about who the Cowboys should go after in the draft and free agency. But with it becoming clearer that we have become the farm system for Miami Dolphin Coach's and Staff, what options are out there to fill in our own coaching staff?
I personally think that Garret is going to stick around. He's a smart guy, and he knows that his stock will only continue to rise, and that he is very well liked around the league, so even if thecowboys take a step back next year, he will still be a hot option for next year's coaching carrosell.
But with Sparano now in Miami, and apparently bringing Todd Bowles, and Paul Pasqualoni, who is out there to fill those spaces? Is Dat Nguyen going to be our new Linebackers Coach?
I'm sure that with 30 years of coaching experience, Wade has connections and will fill in the holes, but does anyone have any idea who that might be? Anybody a big Wade Phillips guy? I know Cam Cameron was thrown around, especially if we lose Garret, but I also have heard that if Garret takes a HC job, he's naming Cam as his OC and Dom Capers as his DC.
Any names of young guys who were with Wade in San Diego or even Buffalo?

I don't think it will matter!
No coach who comes in will tackle, cover or catch!

The thing about Cameron and Garrett ....
While Garrett may want to name Cameron as his offensive Coordinator would Cameron rather coach a Ravens offense with an O-Line in shambles, no short or long term answer at QB, etc or coach the Cowboys which has elite offensive personnel? He did just try to be an NFL head coach for the first time without skilled offensive players (post Brown injury and Chambers trade at least) and it ended after a miserable 1-15 season. I think that applies as much to Houck as well. Now whether Houck could get over the fact that he was fired by the Cowboys under less than ideal circumstances is another issue.
Factor in the three years Cameron worked with Phillips in San Diego and I don't think there is much risk of losing out on him to whichever team Garrett joins as head coach (not a foregone conclusion, fwiw). I would be as worried about losing out on hiring Cameron (if that's where the Boys decide to go) to a team like San Diego; Cameron has worked for Turner before (Redskins) and Clarence Shelmon did a far from inspired job of playcalling in his first season.*
*I am not positive Shelmon was calling the plays or if Turner was.

Cameron know the game...
If the young and unproven Garrett falls on his face in Baltimore, Cameron is going to be the skapegoat and he'll be on the NFL Assistant streets looking for work.
One would have to think that the situation in Dallas would be a great opportunity. You have a DC as a HC, so that basically gives you the reigns over the offense, while you have an owner that is going to pay you as a top coordinator. And then you have to factor in the talent that he would have in Dallas and his increased chance for success along with the relationship with Phillips.
Assuming Cameron is on Jerry's radar (which he should be given Cameron's offense came from Norv Turner's playbook) I think there would be a strong liklihood that Cameron ends up in Dallas and hopefully would then bring Houck along for the ride.

If Garrett leaves, I'd be shocked if
Ray Sherman wasn't promoted by Jones to OC. I think Jones realizes it best that we don't change our offense all that much considering Romo is still young and developing.
I don't think it would be a good idea to bring in an OC from another team because Romo and the offense would have to learn a new offense all over again.

Would like a better understanding of
Sherman's experience as an OC and a playcaller. I love the fact that he's formed a strong relationship with TO, but I don't know that he's the right man for the job since he's been JUST a position coach now for the last 10 years.
Spags over at DC.com throws the name Wade Wilson out there, who has never been an OC either. Assuming Wade has taken care of his "problem", he could also be a candidate.
We had a comfort with Garrett last year only because of Sparano being retained. I'm not sure that I have that same comfort level with having an inexperienced OC this year.

Sherman was an OC with the Vikings
back when they had an explosive offense in '99. I think if I'm not mistaken the Vikings that year had the #3 offense in the NFL.
I think he would do a pretty good job. Continuity is a very important consideration.

He filled in for Brian Billick who
...was hired after the Vikings (then) record breaking '98 season by the Baltimore Ravens.
In 1999 the Vikings offense was 5th in the NFL at 25 ppg with Jeff George and Randal Cunningham at QB.
In 2000 the Vikings went with rookie QB Daunte Culpepper at QB and finished with the same offensive output (25 ppg) while advancing to the NFC Championship game.
Apparently that wasn't good enough for then HC and offensive guru Dennis Green. Here is part of the story...
Sherman quits as Green shakes up coaching staff
Posted: Monday January 24, 2000 02:12 PM
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Ray Sherman quit Monday rather than take a demotion, and tight ends coach Dave Atkins was fired.
Minnesota hired Sherman Lewis, offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers for the last eight seasons, to replace Sherman.
Green had offered to make Sherman receivers coach in a meeting at Winter Park on Sunday morning.
"No, I didn't see it coming," Sherman told the Saint Paul Pioneer Press late Sunday night. He did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press on Monday.

Ooopps...
Correction....2000 was with Sherman Lewis, who posted similar offensive numbers as Ray Sherman did in 1999.
I've asked a MN Viking source inform me on why Ray Sherman was offered a demotion after just one season. Denny Green might have retained the play-calling duties, even though Ray Sherman was the OC....going to find that out too.
We have to remember that Ray Sherman was the WR coach for Cris Carter and Randy Moss. Those two were chior boys when Sherman was in MN. Gotta give him props for that and what he's done while working with TO. Maybe some things are best left unchanged?

To be honest..JG should go...
I do not want to go through this crap every year...I'd rather haven an established OC, an
experienced OC, An OC that only wants to be an OC, A guy like Ernie Zampese, type guy..I think Cam Cameron, who runs a very similar system would be perfect, and I think after the shell shocking he took this year, he won't be interveiwing at HC in the near future. Even if JG came back this year, we'd be dealing with the same crap "DURING" the playoffs each and every year from here on in.... I am certainly not on the keep JG at all cost bandwagon. I certainly didn't feel like he did a good job this year. There wasn't much creativity, he didn't know how to isolate our stars on oppositions weak links.(like every OC in the league did with us against Roy and Reeves) The numbers were put up cuz of the players we have, that's that...We had better balance last year, and I really think teams that saw us early in the year just needed one game tape to hinder our offense in the second go a round...be gone already...I don't think he is anywhere close to being HC material.

Baltimore and Atlanta don't agree

Mutual Feelings...
I feel the same way about the situation. We now get to pay Garrett $2-$3M/year to train on the job. However, I also trust that Jerry will make sure that if he pays Garrett like a HC, that he expects him to stick around for at least 2-3 years. That would put Wade at what...64-65 years old and the transition from old to young would be much more likely.
Garrett did have a very positive influence on Romo this year. I think Romo was given a much loger rope from Garrett and we were able to see some real playmaking ability while his confidence grew. With that said, I also feel like Garrett fell in love with Romo's playmaking ability and too often expected him to convert low percentage plays without an established running game to keep the defense honest.
